Even in the movies that we watch for entertainment, we can see conflicts within the communication between characters. In the movie Hitch, which stars Will Smith, as Hitch and Eva Mendes as Sara, there are several examples of conflict when it comes to interpersonal communication. The one conflict that was most prominent within the movie was when Sara found the man responsible for the heartbreak of her best friend. When Sara investigates the “Date Doctor” to find the man responsible for her best friend getting hurt as the result of a one night stand, she is enraged when she discovers that the man that she has been seeing and getting close to, is the same man as the “Date Doctor”. She can’t believe that the man that she has fallen in love with is the same man that is ultimately responsible for her best friend’s misery. As a result of this, Sara gives Hitch the cold shoulder. She avoids him at all costs, she doesn’t return his phone calls, and she will not talk to him at all. She refuses to hear his side of the story because she has no interest in hearing his side of the story. ...Interpersonal communication, as defined in our textbook, is “a unique type of communication that involved two individuals interacting via face-to-face or mediated channels.” It seems that where there is communication, inevitably there will be conflict. Television dramas tend to add conflict in their storylines in an effort to make the viewers relate to the characters. In the television series Scandal, interpersonal communication conflicts are numerous. Oddly enough, the characters in this program are all in roles where communication is of immense importance and yet, none of them communicate very well at all. This may, indeed, be one of the main reasons for the success of this show. Watching television characters intertwined in personal conflict somehow make them more real to the audience. As a longtime fan of the show, choosing one single instance of interpersonal conflict was most difficult. However, I chose a conflict that has been ongoing since the show’s inception. The communication issues between Olivia Pope and Abby Whelan has developed, much in the way that their relationship has evolved. Both characters are strong and powerful women and, as it is with such personas, their communication tends to lack finesse. I have seen and am guilty of myself of believing that I am closer and understand better certain people because of my personal relationships with them. ...I would describe Jim’s self-concept as very negative. He feels that no matter what he does or how hard he tries he is a failure. Jim is also experiencing what is called “self fulfilled prophecy.” Self fulfilled prophecy is where the person (Jim) behaves in the manner that someone (his father) states he will.
