...Stephan C. Bandy responds in “ ‘One Of My Babies’: The Misfit and the Grandmother,” and claims that even if the Misfit had been shown true grace, he would reject it. However, Matthew Fike, in “The Timothy Allusion in ‘A Good Man is Hard To Find’” believes the Misfit was startled because he felt the Holy Spirit, who he had been trying to deny his entire life, and emphasizes the cleaning of his glasses as spiritual...

...Based on the readings and my personal interpretation of them, I think that the Native American Church is about personal spirituality. One thing that stood out to me was in “A Brief History of the Native American Church” was the author’s last paragraph indicating “The Church has no professional, paid clergy. Members are free to interpret Bible passages according to their own understanding” (Fikes, A Brief History of the Native American Church, 173). Throughout the readings, Peyote is explained as a critical part of the Church. Specifically, “Peyote embodies the Creator’s heart” (Fikes, A Brief History of the Native American Church, 168). I feel for me to explain why I think the NAC is about personal spirituality, it’s important to tie in the...

...Epistemological Reflection in the First Year Experience Course Program Charge The Student Development Division staff subcommittee of ABC Community College has been tasked to present to the Dean of Student Affairs a theory based program to foster student development. The subcommittee proposes a revision to the first year experience course curriculum which will integrate outcomes based on Baxter Magolda’s Model of Epistemological Reflection. Proposed Program Goal and Context Overall, this program is designed to “validate students as knowers, situate learning in the students’ experiences, encourage the processes of jointly constructed knowledge, and facilitate learning relationships that empower students” (Bock, 1999, p. 39). More specifically, the First Year Experience Curriculum Revision will challenge first-year community college students’ assumptions about the nature, limits, and certainty of knowledge (Evans et al., 2010, p. 125). Target Demographic The traditional and nontraditional community college students enrolled in a first year experience course are the target demographic for this program. While the average age of the community college student is twenty nine years old, the students enrolled in the first year experience course will range from new high school graduates to working adults. Program Description The proposed student development initiative will be carried out through curriculum revision of a First Year Experience Course. This course will...

...TO: Dr. Fike, CEO FROM: Lamis Niggis SUBECT: Site Inspection Report - Belk DATE: June 27, 2013 The Location This store is located in Valdosta, GA at the Valdosta mall. The mall is located on the intersection of Norman Drive and Saint Augustine Road. The mall has one of the highest visitor counts in all of South Georgia. Belk can be found on the west side of the mall in between Old Navy and JC Penny if you come in through the front mall entrance. I have included a map of the mall so that you will know exactly where it is. [pic] Customer Service This Belk serves over 350 patrons while bringing in over $15,000 in sales on an average day. The average transaction takes 7 minutes and costs $45. ¾ of sales come from Belk credit card holders. Card holders enjoy many benefits that regular customers do not, including: special sale days, more coupons, tailoring, free shipping, and cash back. One negative is that at times due to not enough workers being present the wait times for a transaction can rise. Décor The store has white ceiling and walls with carpet on the areas containing clothing. The store in laid out in a way that I feel is somewhat cluttered and lacking space between the clothing racks. As I walked between the clothing areas I felt that I was rubbing shoulders with other customers. There isn’t any art or real design to the store. Market Potential The current demographics...

...Service Request SR-rm-004, Part 2 Human Resources Information System (HRIS) The Human Resources Information System (HRIS) is the current system used by the Human Resources Department of Riordan Manufacturing. This system handles the company’s 550 employee’s data, plus it performs several other tasks which include the employee’s personal information, hire date, pay rate, and vacation time accrued. This system was installed in 1992 and has yet to be upgraded to handle many different transactions, these transaction are currently handled manually. If any changes in employee status are needed, the manager of that employee will need to fill-out a special form and submit it to payroll for it to be entered into the system. Service Request Advancement in technology has presented a necessity for changes and upgrades to the Human Resources Information System (HRIS). This up-to-date system will switch from manually done transactions to automatic transactions that will provide security, speed, reliability, and save time by eliminating the special forms. Hugh McCauley, company chief operating officer (COO), has requested an analysis of the HR system to integrate the existing variety of tools in use today into a single integrated application (Apollo, 2007). As the company’s interest in being a part of a new state-of-the-art information system technology rises, there are several steps needs to be taken...

...Popular Culture Carol A. Mielish SOC/105 June 30, 2011 Roger Fike Popular Culture Culture is created by people in a society because of their interaction with each other within neighborhoods, states, or countries. Understanding and interaction of people in a society shapes culture. Culture is the material products such as a car or a certain style of clothing, and nonmaterial products such as religious and political preferences of society. Popular culture is also the result of daily interactions, needs, and wants of any given society, which get us through our everyday lives. Popular culture pertains to practices such as cooking, mass media, literature, entertainment, and sports (Petracca & Sorapure, 2007). Various media venues influence much of our every day lives. Television, radio, and magazines are major trends influencing society’s purchasing decisions, body image, and lifestyle choices. Television is the most common leisure activity and has much impact on society’s purchasing decisions because of sponsored advertisements marketing products and infomercials selling products promising to make us look younger, slimmer, and more fashionable. Shopping channels such as QVC allow society to make purchases from the comfort of a living room or bedroom. Television provides unlimited varieties of products which society desires to enhance or make lifestyles easier and more comfortable. Body image seems to be a major concern for many people. Television and magazines teach...

...Danielle Fikes BUS 499 March 10, 2011 Assignment 5 1. Describe how successful the business has been at recognizing and satisfying stakeholder interests. The sisters of Harry McNeely and Don McNeely were stock holders and their interests were being completely ignored. Whether you are family or not, if an individual is a stock owner, their voice is to be heard considering they own part of the company that is bringing in income. According to definition, a stockholder is, "one who owns shares of stock in a corporation or mutual fund," (stockholder, 2011). Family or not, there are still legalities that must be honored in this case. It seems that the brothers clearly violated their sisters rights as stockholder. It took unecessary time and heartache in order for the sisters to get anything in the end. This is a situation that could have and should have been resolved very early on. When the compnay was split into two different companies, they did not discuss the issue with the stakeholders. The two brothers just decided to do it themselves and basically figured life would continue on as normal. This is bad business. Stakeholders have a huge say so when it comes to what happens to a business. It is unfair to have people invest money into something and then not be able to say anything when it comes to changes. ...correct way for them to teach each concept the best way possible to their classes which is the reason why some do not believe that by having this uncomfortable topic of having their students read the “n-word” each time is the best way for them to be taught about moral ethics (Schneider). Yet, at the same time, it is not only teachers that find it uncomfortable but also African Americans today because they were the ones affected by all this during this time and was one of the roughest spots that they have faced. There is no need to hide but it can be humiliating which is the reason why some choose to go out of their way to show their disagreement back in the day by going out and rumbling out in their cities, vocally and nonverbally protesting (Fike). By doing this they demonstrated that they were no longer willing to go along with this because it was not fair for them since this had been going on for too many years. Detractors of the original novel are just trying to make this novel the best that can be in order to keep all of their audience comfortable with reading because they understand that the message behind it is so meaningful that just because of a word, that is not reason enough for the whole book to be banished. Those who support altering the novel understand this argument that is made because they know that all that is done is for the benefit of the people only. ...

...Catina Hunter 7/14/2014 The Worth of a Pharmacy Technician The Essentials of College Writing The work of a pharmacy technician can be both complex and stressful. We are not paid enough. For me it’s complex because I have to where many hats. It’s also stressful because not only do we have to deal with sometimes irate pharmacist but also facility employees. I have to even sometimes correct the pharmacist we are trained to assist. Our pay does not reflect the work or effort we put into our jobs. Even though we do more work physically and mentally than the pharmacist our pay does not reflect it. My work is far more important than what we are paid for. I on a daily basis assist customers, enter prescripstions, check inventory of controls, make sure patients get their meds in a timely fashion and deal with sometimes egotistical pharmacist who think we are nothing. I work for a Long Term Care pharmacy. Where our patients are most important. Dealing with families of patients who are end of life is also stressful. Will the comfort meds get there soon enough. Which is also stressful. I have to deal with nurses that think we are magician and can make things happen in a blink of an eye. Some technicians make less than $10 an hour. Which I think is unfair. I have argued this point for the other technicians for years. Some are even certified. Why be certified if a technician is barely making more than minimum wage? I work in the control department. I have been accused of not doing my...

...Ontology by Tom Gruber in the Encyclopedia of Database Systems, Ling Liu and M. Tamer Özsu (Eds.), Springer-Verlag, 2009. Synonyms computational ontology, semantic data model, ontological engineering Definition In the context of computer and information sciences, an ontology defines a set of representational primitives with which to model a domain of knowledge or discourse. The representational primitives are typically classes (or sets), attributes (or properties), and relationships (or relations among class members). The definitions of the representational primitives include information about their meaning and constraints on their logically consistent application. In the context of database systems, ontology can be viewed as a level of abstraction of data models, analogous to hierarchical and relational models, but intended for modeling knowledge about individuals, their attributes, and their relationships to other individuals. Ontologies are typically specified in languages that allow abstraction away from data structures and implementation strategies; in practice, the languages of ontologies are closer in expressive power to first-order logic than languages used to model databases. For this reason, ontologies are said to be at the "semantic" level, whereas database schema are models of data at the "logical" or "physical" level. Due to their independence from lower level data models, ontologies are used for integrating heterogeneous databases, enabling interoperability...

...It's easy to fall into the trap: A gym buddy passes along a workout tip, and then you pass it on to several people you know. Your kid’s coach gives you advice, and sure enough you hear the same thing from several other parents. So you figure it must be true. But experts say that in the world of health and fitness, myths and half-truths flourish – and some of them may be keeping you from getting the best and safest workout. "Some myths are just harmless half-truths, but many others can actually be harmful. They can cause frustration in working out and sometimes even lead to injury. One reason myths get started, is that we all react to exercise a little differently. So what's true for one person may not be true for another." (Harr, 2001) That said, experts say there are also some fitness myths that just need busting! Running on a Treadmill is Easier on the Knees Sorry, but it is the running itself that stresses the knees, not the surface you’re pounding. To ease the impact on your knees, experts advise varying your aerobic activities: mix running with riding a stationary bike or using the elliptical machine at the gym (Cool, 2012). Crunches Lead to Six-pack Abs Sure they will as long as you also get rid of any belly fat that obscures your abdominal muscles. While crunches strengthen muscles, they won’t burn off the fat in your belly. To flaunt your newly crunched abs you’ve got to trim the fat via diet, cardiovascular exercise and resistance training. And, of course, for...

...APPLE’S PROFITABLE BUT ISKY STRATEGY Case Study [Type the author name] CASE STUDY ON PROFITABLE BUT RISKY STRATEGY OF APPLE INTRODUCTION: A long term plan and action that is formulated to help a company to setback and achieve a competitive advantage against its competitor and rival is called competitive strategy. This type of strategy is frequently used in marketing, promotion and advertising operations by somehow questioning the rivalry's service or product. Competitive strategies are vital to businesses which are competing in markets for the leading position, the market which is deeply saturated with substitutes for consumers. (Porter,2008). This case study is truly about the competitive strategy of Apple. Apple was founded in 1976 by two Steve Job and Steve Wozniak. Apple initiated its early reputation by making user friendly personal computers and keeping the price high against those made by the competitors. Their first computer was the Apple Macintosh (MAC). It was launched in 1984. From the very first, Apple’s strategy was innovative and profitable. Innovation brings risk with it. So Apple always followed innovative, risky but a highly profitable strategy. Apple is a front line company in industry of electronics whether in cell phones, tablets, personal computers and music devices etc. Apple’s software is actually the one which is greatly designed and programmed. Apple charge premium and comparatively high price from the consumers when compared with prices...

...UCSB Computer Science Technical Report 2010-05. Who’s Driving this Cloud? Towards Efficient Migration for Elastic and Autonomic Multitenant Databases Aaron Elmore Sudipto Das Divyakant Agrawal Amr El Abbadi Department of Computer Science University of California, Santa Barbara, CA, USA {aelmore, sudipto, agrawal, amr}@cs.ucsb.edu Abstract The success of cloud computing as a platform for deploying webapplications has led to a deluge of applications characterized by small data footprints but unpredictable access patterns. An autonomic and scalable multitenant database management system (DBMS) is therefore an important component of the software stack for platforms supporting these applications. Elastic load balancing is a key requirement for effective resource utilization and operational cost minimization. Efficient techniques for database migration are thus essential for elasticity in a multitenant DBMS. Our vision is a DBMS where multitenancy is viewed as virtualization in the database layer, and migration is a first class notion with the same stature as scalability, availability etc. This paper serves as the first step in this direction. We analyze the various models of database multitenancy, formalize the forms of migration, evaluate the offthe-shelf migration techniques, and identify the design space and research goals for an autonomic and elastic multitenant database. ...Prepared for: Dr. David Conner (Department of CARRS) Dr. Dale Rozeboom (Animal Science) Prepared by: Victoria Campbell-Arvai Department of CARRS, Michigan State University August 17, 2009 Literature Review: A Comparison of Dairy Production Systems SUMMARY This literature review focused on studies comparing the effects of dairy production systems (pasture-based, conventional/confinement1, and mixed) on (i) environmental issues, (ii) social issues, (iii) economic issues, (iv) human health issues, and (v) animal welfare issues. The review was based on peer-reviewed research papers identified by experts at MSU, as well as (where specifically suggested) non peer-reviewed university and government reports. Additional studies were identified from the reference section of recommended papers, as well as via their citation index (primarily Google Scholar). A synopsis of each section is available below, as well as at the end of each section. There is a great deal of research –much of it based in the United States- on the environmental effects of all types of dairy farming, including intensive/confinement, mixed, pasture-based, and management-intensive rotational grazing (MIRG) operations. The vast majority of studies identified for this review focused on the fate and management of excess nitrogen and phosphorous, their effects on terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, and contributions to air quality and climate change. Many environmental mitigation efforts were suggested, including...
