Information about diversity in the United States that has helped me to better understand and relate to others in the past and today would be the events of 9/11. While I was serving in the Navy, we were assigned to escort and protect oil tankers in the Persian Gulf, ensuring safe passage from attacks by Iraqi forces. At the time, I did not look at Saddam Hussein as a radical Muslim, just as a dictator who was dead set on ruling his people and making them submit. After the attacks on the Twin Towers, I joined with other Americans, calling for a war on terrorism and the Muslims. I researched the Koran to see what all the hoopla was about and discovered that there are two acceptable versions, one that calls for a Jihad (holy war), and one that teaches peace among all people. I found that only a handful of Muslims are radical and believe in the Holy War, and that most want to live in peace with others. By learning this about the Muslims, I also learned that many whites in America are still biased toward other races and ethnicities. While some embrace the diversity on our country, there are still those that look down unapprovingly at other races. While I am proud of who I am, and my race, there are those that still embarrass me.

According to projections by the U.S. Census Bureau, non-Hispanic whites could be a minority by 2043, due in part to the doubling of Hispanic and Asian populations. Races that are considered minorities today comprise 37 percent of the population, by 2060, it is projected to be 57 percent. Not only will our population be more diverse, it will be older, as the bureau predicts that the elderly population will also double in that time (Cline, 2012). I feel that this is due in part that people are concerning themselves more with their health and living longer than ever before, and that infant mortality rates are dropping.

The United States is going through a demographic change, and there is a need for us to analyze what this change means for local and national policy. If we can better understand how the local communities manage the changes, then there can be an outline of positive effects and a vision of what our country could look like in the future. If we do not engage in open discussions about opportunities and challenges for diversity, then our anxieties of where our country is headed will continue to grow. Combine this with the impending demographic change, this could generate even more of a cultural and racial division that would go against the fundamentals of American democracy. We have been down this road many times before as waves of immigrants continue to arrive, of facing discrimination and hardships. This has only enabled the latest generations of Americans to assimilate and thrive. Discrimination is still prevalent with escalations in voter suppression, hate crimes, anti-immigration, adding to a sense that our federal, state and local governments are failing to provide the leadership that is needed to move us forward. We cannot allow the future of the country to be dominated by those who advocate a narrow definition of the American ideal, we must accept the demographic change that is ahead of us.

One of the benefits of living in such a diverse society is learning about other cultures. I think that disasters like the 9/11 attacks and others happen because different cultures do not understand each other, and so they are afraid of each other. For us as a community and society, I think we must make it a point to understand each other, what makes us tick, our beliefs, our differences and more importantly, our similarities. How do we do this? First, we must understand what culture is. The Meriam-Webster dictionary defines is as; “the set of shared attitudes, values goals and practices”. How can we learn about different cultures that surround us on a daily basis? We can start by sharing and teaching our friends, co-workers and neighbors about our cultures. Celebrate with foods from our culture, share traditions, holidays and events. Open our minds to benefit from such diverse cultures, we can join clubs that promote diversity. If we can do this, I believe we can then begin to understand each other and be less likely to alienate of be afraid of each other.

As in every era before, we are giving new meaning to “We the people…”. What does it mean to say “we” in a multi-religious America? How exactly do “we” relate to each other when “we” includes Muslims living in America, and we are afraid of them? Pluralism is the actual engagement with that diversity. We can observe, celebrate, or be critical or threatened by it. Real pluralism includes participation and engagement, walking a mile in their shoes. Pluralism is more than mere tolerance, it requires some knowledge of our differences. Tolerance xna often stand in the way of engagement because it does not require knowledge. It allows for us to keep our stereotypes. Pluralism is also not as simple as relating, but makes room different commitments. It does not insist that we allow our beliefs to be clouded by acknowledging that other’s beliefs are different. Pluralism is founded on the base of the First Amendment of the Constitution: “No establishment” of religion and the “free exercise” of religion. E Pluribus Unum, “Out of Many, One”, gives us the common civic duty of understanding and engagement. It also requires constructive dialogue that reveal common understanding and some real differences. It does not mean we will agree, it just means that it will reveal both areas of agreement and disagreement in order to discover our differences for better engagement (Eck, 2006).

All career driven, professional women are single and lonely. All Muslims are terrorists. All African Americans are on welfare. All Hispanics are illegal aliens. All whites are racist. Gay men are feminine. Christians are Bible thumping, gay bashers, New Yorker are rude. Politicians are crooks. Old people cannot drive. Asians are smart. These are all stereotypes that we have heard or used at some point in our lives. We as Americans have a habit to lump all people of a certain race, color or ethnicity into categories. Even though we have made progress in recent years, stereotypes are still a part of American culture, made worse by media’s portrayal. Stereotypes in the media are inevitable, especially in advertising. McDonald’s uses African Americans in many of their ads to increase their sales among minorities. The groups being stereotyped have little if anything to say about that type of representation. Movies and television often use racial and cultural stereotypes. This is not to elicit a response, but more because it make it easier to write a script using them.

As I searched the internet for examples of haw the media has helped foster an appreciation for diversity, I quickly discovered that there were not too many of them to be found. If anything, I found that media encourages an appreciation for diversity by introducing us to different people and cultures that we may not encounter on a normal basis, and this leads to a greater understanding of different cultures. For the most part, television shows perpetuate stereotypes of races and cultures, and do very little to celebrate our differences or introduce us to something new. Shows like, “No Reservations” with Anthony Bourdain, or “Bizarre Foods” with Andrew Zimmerman, give us a peek into other cultures and the foods they celebrate with and sit down to eat. Every great once in a while, the main stream media will air a “feel good” story about people helping others in a time of need.

Misconceptions are effective only when we avoid contact with those we have the misconceptions about. By increasing our exposure to people that do not belong to our own culture or race, we learn more about them and the stereotypes and prejudices can be reduced. But, this needs to be more than just an organizational goal, it needs to be on a personal level. According to “Reducing Personal Prejudices” (), there are some steps we as individuals can take to reduce them within ourselves. First, acknowledge that we have learned prejudicial information; this allows us to air our misinformations. Next, confront the learned stereotypes, do not feel guilt or pass blame. We can choose to enter a supportive group to help make changes, as we tend to make changes to ourselves, but not help others with these same changes. Commit to change, not only to ourselves, but to others because a commitment to others is stronger than one we make to ourselves. Finally, be aware of our own self-talk about other groups. Recognizing and understanding how and why we talk about others is an important step to reducing prejudicial behavior.

To be more pluralistic and inclusive, I can make it a point to think things through from other viewpoint, trying to see things form the eyes of the people from other backgrounds. I have been and still am at times, guilty of jumping to conclusions regarding others and their actions, or first impressions of others based on their appearance, and is usually centered around one word: “sheep”. I od not see individuals in today’s youth, only followers who claim to have their own personal style, and I am guilty of realizing that they are the future of our country, and scared of it.

I must empty my head of my “pre-judgements” and take a step back to observe and not judge. Speaking out when I see an injustice or prejudicial behavior is important as well, and to encourage others to do the same thing, to find value in self and to avoid collectivism. “Racism is a much more clandestine, much more hidden kind of phenomenon, but at the same time it is perhaps far more terrible than it has ever been.” (Angela Davis). Life is food for learning. I must be aware that my prior experiences will be reflected in my perceptions of others.

...Final Project Joey O'Neill ETH 125 April 28, 2013 Dr. June Terpstra Final Project * * Mostly, I now have a better understanding of the diversity within groups that would be different from the ones that I am considered to be in. I have seen groups of people that are all grouped as one but are actually more individual than meets the eye. An example of this is the differences within the Jewish community. According to Schaefer (2012), “The Judaic faith embraces several factions or denominations that are similar in their roots but marked by sharp distinctions. No precise data reveal the relative numbers of the three major groups. Part of the problem is the difficulty of placing individuals in the proper group. For example, it is common for a Jew to be a member of an Orthodox congregation but consider him- or herself Conservative. The following levels of affiliation are based on a 2010 national survey of Jewish Americans: * _ Orthodox—10 percent _ Conservative—24 percent _ Reconstructionist—2 percent _ Reform—26 percent _ just Jewish—23 percent * _ not sure—1 percent” (p. 337). * * This has given me a better understanding of this group’s diversity and made me realize that is the choice of the individual to follow their desired path. One thing new I learned about my own racial cultural history is that it is a lot easier for this group to hide within its own kind than it is for others. Because of the volume of people that fall into this...

...Final Project ***** **** April 13th, 2014 ETH/125 David DiBari During my time in this class I have learned a lot of new things about different groups of people and it has helped me be more understanding of these groups. The United States has such a variety of people and all of us have either personally moved here from somewhere else or have ancestors who have moved to this country. I also learned a lot about how I can help move the push for equality forward and show my support. I have learned that all groups have discrimination. I have also learned that my culture is just as discriminated against as everyone else’s, even though I did not know that before. According to a report done by Pew Research Center, buy 2050 the United States will be at an incredible 438 million in population. This coming up from the 303 million in the United States in 2008. (Haub, 2008) Not only that but the racial pool of this large group of people is also going to shift. Caucasian Americans will go from the 67% it stood at in 2005 to the estimated 47% of 2050. Other races included in this estimate are Hispanics, which are estimated to go from 14% to 29%. African Americans that are expected to stay at 13% and Asians, which are estimated to go from 5% to 9%. (Passel, 2008) I think a lot of this has to do with the amount of immigration we have right now and the fact that a large portion of our immigration is from our southern border. There are a lot of challenges...

...Final Project ETH/125 October 16, 2013 Final Project • What information about diversity in the United States has helped you better understand or relate to others in ways that you may not have in the past? During this class I found it interesting that I was noticing interracial couples more often. While I do not have a prejudice against this, this class opened my eyes to what is really out in the world. While I am very happy to see this I also know that as long as society chooses to label people and hold stereotypes as truths there will always be more to accomplish with regards to discrimination and prejudice. Learning about diversity also helped me to recognize discrimination and prejudice. It is our diversity that makes the United States such a great county. We need to protect this diversity and fight against discrimination and prejudice. I speak up now because of learning about how this country was founded on diversity. I wish to change the mentality of people as much as I can so they too can understand the diversity of the United States. • Have you learned something new about your own racial, ethnic, or cultural history? While I view myself as an American, I did learn about who I am. I was especially interested in my mother’s ancestry. I had a chance to talk to my mother about this. While much of my Great Grandfather’s history is lost we do know that he was married to a Alkonkin Indian Squaw. My mother an I have decided to do more research on her Grandfather...

...Racial Issues in Saint Louis, Missouri Michelle Strohm ETH/125 July 4, 2010 Cindy Kacmar When I started thinking about how the influences of race relating to my community I first thought about the local schools. My daughter attends a local public school, which has some diversity in race. What first came to mind though was the huge desegregation program they have had in existence for many years. Almost any morning or afternoon you will see a sea of yellow on the freeways. Some 14,000 African-American children are bused out of the city and into the suburban St. Louis County every school day. More than 1600 white suburban students go in the other direction to the city’s “magnet” schools. Magnet schools are public schools with specialized courses. “Magnet” refers to how the schools draw students from across the normal boundaries defined by school zones that feed into certain schools. Within the city, 3500 children shuffle between black north St. Louis and the mainly white south side. Our program is the largest desegregation program in the country. The next example I thought of about race relating to my community was my local highways. Many years ago my community adopted a program called “Adopt A Highway”. It involves the community to keep areas of their assigned highway clean. I can remember in 8th grade cleaning up along a main road in my town that my school adopted just for the 8th graders. One day after I started driving, I was going down highway 55, and...

...ETH 125 Final Project ETH 125 ETH 125 Final Project There are a lot of issues we face as a nation. There are so many, that often times you wonder if any of them will actually see a resolution. Americans everyday face very real issues of poverty, employment, security, and education. None of these issues are to be taken too lightly. One of the most important issues off all, though, is diversity. The equal treatment of all citizens either born in, or immigrated to, America. A lot of strides have been made over the course of America’s history. Diversity, and equal treatment of Americans, has to be one of the top priorities for everyone. Over the course of time, I have had a lot of interaction with different cultures. We have lived in Japan, America, and Europe. All of which provide very different cultures to learn and experience. One thing I have learned is to always keep an open mind. When you approach another culture with a closed mind that is when stereotypes take shape. I also learned to evaluate the history of your own people and their struggles. A lot of times, even though we may look different, we have all had very similar struggles throughout the course of history. Women have had the same struggles as African Americans when it comes to basic civil liberties. The same applies to Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender people. As you look at the different racial and gender groups, you do see a lot of similarities. You also learn some new things about their histories...

Diversity

...Final Project Stephanie A. Wright ETH/125 June 16, 2013 Berita Sherman Final Project Diversity affects the lives of the American people in many different ways. Some ways that diversity is considerably noticeable is when it becomes the obvious and is displayed in the public eye. An example of diversity is the increasing number of different ethnicity populating the United States. Although some smaller communities in the United States may have fewer Hispanics, Blacks, Japanese, Chinese, Indians and American Indians than in the many Cities, the average number of their populations are considered in the statistical averages for that State and the United States. Considering the statistical averages documented in the United States White Americans make up over 70 percent of the population. The different ethnicity bring unique beliefs, ideas, and means of survival for life. One commonality that all ethnicity have is religion, however almost all ethnicity have different beliefs when it comes to religion. The different religious beliefs tend to create havoc with all American people regardless of race, sex or ethnicity. Observations of conversations in a University of Phoenix’s Ethics 125 class were clearly disagreements of many beliefs, topics as well as ideas of how to communicate them. In the class there was a multitude of different cultures and ethnicity which were shared and learned by all. After discussions in the classroom every student learned many different facets of life...

...Week 9 Final Assignment ETH/125 October 12, 2013 Dr. Regina Pacheco, Ed.M., PhD. Week 9 Final Assignment My experience in this Culture Diversity course has given me a new insight and thought provoking information that has helped me to relate and understand diversity in a new and different way than I had before. Diversity can be such an interesting topic. When one mentions the word “diversity” several things come to mind. An most often, the first thing that comes to mind is the diverse culture, right here in America. To gain a better understanding of all the different cultures around the World. A person could spend their lifetime traveling around the world, from one culture to another. Why do that? When all one has to do is sit back and take in the daily occurrences and experience everything around them. Right here in America.
