Find Love in Heartache
In, "The Book Thief," Liesel goes through such an incredible amount of pain and trial, but still finds a place in her heart to love the people around her. The thing that touched me the most was the heart of this little girl. At one point she describes why she isn't angry at the people around her and she describes them as, "Victims of Circumstance." I find that incredible due to the fact that these days a child will scream how much they hate their parents when they won't buy them a toy at the local super market. The most important theme of, "The Book Thief," is learning to find love in the middle of a hate filled war, like Liesel did with The Mayors library, Max, and her Papa.
One of the times Liesel finds love in the book is when the mayor’s wife lets her into the large library where she can run her fingers along the spines of as many books as she can reach. Even plop down on the cold wooden floors to dive into a land more colorful and privileged than her own. Not only could she express her love for reading, but she developed a relationship with an injured woman who had lost her son at a young age. She even allowed her to open up her heart again and love the little girl. This relationship could have possibly saved her life due to the fact that she lived with the mayor and his wife after the bombing.
A different kind of love she experienced was with Max Vandenburg. This in fact, was a forbidden love. A "Proper German" at the time wasn't allowed to show kindness to a Jew, much less hide them in their basement and treat them like family. Multiple times Max and Liesel showed their love for each other. When Max was deathly sick in bed, Liesel brought him gifts. Being the poor family they were it was nothing but scraps she found in the road, but when Max awoke they obviously meant the world to him. Another gesture of love was when Max wrote Liesel a book. The book defined the friendship of the German and the Jew and was a prime example of people being able to love one another even when it wasn’t socially acceptable.
The greatest love of all was the love Liesel had for her foster father she called, “Papa." The man was gentle with her from the moment she was dropped off and showed her every bit of kindness a man could. He held her the late nights where she would wake up screaming and scarred from the images of her dead brother. He would teach her the alphabet and how to read. He would take her on his painting jobs and play the accordion for her when she was sad or scared. He showed her every kind of love that there is and would risk anything to keep her safe. The fact that she wasn't even blood to him and he still treated her like his daughter magnified the importance of this character. I truly believe he was what kept Liesel loving. He was the gentleness in her that allowed her to open her heart to people she shouldn't, and to objects that could take her to another place like a book. He was such an essential part to the story and I know I wouldn't have liked it near as much without him.
The importance of reading and writing, how awful war can really be, finding your own identity, maybe even where courage can take you, are all important themes of this book. Can any of that be without love? You have to love to live happily. It's such a strange and confusing part of life, but it’s what wakes you up in the morning. Whether it’s the love of your job, your friends and family, school, an incredible spouse/boyfriend or maybe even the love of what you're going to eat for breakfast that morning. There's love in every part of your life whether you see it or not. Love makes the world go 'round! That's why I think learning to love in the midst of heartache is the most important theme of, "The Book Thief."

Falling in Love

...IN LOVE BY: ANONYMOUS When you think of your past love, you may view it as a failure. But when you find a new love, you view the past as a teacher. In the game of love, it doesn't really matter who won or who lost. What is important is you know when to hold on and when to let go! You know you really love someone when you want him or her to be happy, even if his or her happiness means that you're not part of it. Everything happens for the best. If the person you love doesn't love you back, don't be afraid to love someone else again, for you'll never know unless you give it a try. You'll never truly love a person you love unless you RISK FOR LOVE. Love strives in hurting. If you don't get hurt, you don't learn how to love. Love doesn't hurt all the time, though the hurting is still there to test you and to help you grow. Don't find love, let love find you. That's why it's called falling in love because you don't force yourself to fall. You just fall. You cannot finish a book without closing its chapters. If you want to go on, then you have to leave the past as you turn the pages. Love is not destroyed by a single failure nor won by a single caress. It is a lifetime venture in which we are always learning, relearning, discovering, rediscovering, and growing. The greatest irony of love is LETTING GO WHEN YOU WANT TO HOLD ON and HOLDING ON WHEN YOU NEED TO LET GO. We lose someone we love only when we are destined to find someone else who can love us even more than we can love ourselves...

Fault in Our Stars

...The Fault In Our Stars by John Green, he builds a story out of darkness and despair. He takes the tragedy of cancer and immerses us in the lives of characters that could very well be real. Many know of the heartaches in dealing with those who fight the fight, and many of those scars last a lifetime. He brings his story in the form of a teen girl, Hazel Lancaster. Stricken with cancer from a young age, she believes she has come to terms with what her life has become. Then she meets a young man, Augustus Waters, a survivor of cancer. He is drawn to her in a way that is initially uncomfortable, and as she tries to push him away in her sarcastic vein, he finds her to be exactly the type of girl he has been looking for. Throughout the story there is a beauty and humor, a 'candle in the wind' for each of those whose lives have been touched by such an uncaring disease. For cancer touches not just the victim but all those who love and are in anyway touched by them. Be prepared for a story of romance and anger, excitement and humor, and friendship and bravery for that is the direction we are led as Green develops the personality of a group of teens that have the courage to bring both laughter and tears. The stories that encircle each individual give you a glimpse of the character and daring as well as abiding hope. Hidden within that strengththey also hide the depression and hopelessness as they try hard to protect their family and friends by showing only the smiles and strength...

I George Balanchine....

...I was born Georgi Melitonovitch Balanchivadze in St. Petersburg, Russia, on January 22, 1904. I am the son of Meliton and Maria Balanchivadze. I was surrounded by music and artistic influences from a very early age. My father was a composer, therefore I studied the piano as a child frequently. However, at the age of ten, I entered the Imperial Ballet School, where I learned the precise and athletic Russian dancing style of ballet. In 1921 I entered the St. Petersburg Conservatory of Music to study piano while I continued to work in ballet at the State Academy of Opera and Ballet. From there I used a group of dancers from the school to present my earliest choreographed works. One of the students was Tamara Gevergeyeva, she was a doll, I later married Tamara in 1922. She was the first of four wives I had, all of whom were dancers. My big break came when the manager of the Ballets Russes, Sergei Diaghilev, discovered me in 1925, in Paris, France. At the age of 21, I became the main choreographer of the most famous ballet company in the world. I worked on ten ballets for Diaghilev, and it was Diaghilev who actually changed the my name to Balanchine. When Diaghilev died and the company broke up in 1929, I moved from one company to another until I formed my own company, Les Ballets in 1933. In that same year, after a Les Ballets performance, I met Lincoln Kirstein, a young, rich American, who invited me to head a new School of American Ballet in New York City. With the School...

My Approach to Life

...become a part of who I am and how I’ve lived my life. In ancient Greece, the temple of Apollo at Delphi bore the inscription Meden Agan - 'Nothing in excess'. 1 The ancient Greeks knew what my high school classmate had—that moderation makes life run more smoothly. Moderation in this day and age is not always hip though. What are cool are extremes, from extreme sports to extreme home makeovers. But it seems that for a lot of people, straying from the path of moderation causes nothing but heartache, from the drinker who loses everything to the bottle, to the gambler who loses his life’s savings. The more extreme our wants, the more we must accumulate to make ourselves happy. But I also think moderation can make for an extremely boring life. It’s a life played safely and without true passion. But even one, good, all-consuming passion can make life exciting and infinitely more fun. Passion makes life worth living. The passion can be anything—for a husband, a child, one’s family, or for a career you love, for travel or a hobby or a cause that consumes you. For me it is several of those things. It’s the “icing on the cake” of one’s life. So I believe, have your moderation...

Loyalty In Beowulf

...Imagine being the mother of a son who has committed a very serious crime, would you still love him with all your heart? The answer to that question would vary depending on different points of views, but from my understanding most people would. Why though? Your son just violated the law, and you would still forgive him? This all comes down to love and loyalty. In Beowulf, loyalty played a major role in the relationship between Grendel and Grendel’s mother. Grendel’s mother knew her son was atrocious, but the love between her and her son never changed. Grendel’s mother was loyal to her son when defeat played a part in his death, and adds to my belief that a mother’s loyalty will never changed no matter how gruesome their child is. Every child or adolescent gets into trouble, hoping that their parents will still love them the same. For instance, Grendel’s attacks on Hrothgar’s people. He standed “hoping to kill” the innocent people of their country. Even though Grendel terrorizes Hrothgar’s halls and made everyone miserable, he was still loved by his mother. Now look at a similar scenario from a modern eye, think about a young boy causing a destruction. The d mother of the young boy would be disappointed by her son’s behavior, but the love for him will not change; furthermore,...
