Metal Forming

...Metal forming is a general term, for a large group, that includes a wide variety of manufacturing processes. Metal forming processes are characteristic in that the metal being processed is plastically deformed in order to shape it into a desired geometry. In order to plastically deform a metal, a force must be applied that will exceed the yield strength of the material. The material actually gets stronger the more it is deformed plastically. This is called strain hardening or work hardening. Many metal forming processes are suitable for processing large quantities (i.e., bulk) of material, and their suitability depends not only upon the shape and size control of the product but also upon the surface finish produced. There are many different metal forming processes and some processes yield a better geometry and surface-finish than some others. Metal forming processes can be classified under two major groups. Bulk deformation processes and sheet metalworking processes. Bulk deformation is characteristic in that the work formed has a low surface area to volume ratio. In sheet metalworking the metal being processed will have a high surface area to volume ratio. Among the bulk Deformation, there are rolling, forging, extrusion and drawing method. Rolling is a metal forming process that deforms the work by the use of rolls. Rolling processes include flat rolling, shape rolling, ring rolling, thread rolling, gear rolling, and the production of seamless tube and pipe by rotary...

...certain allowances are given on the sizes specified in the drawing so that the finished and machined casting produced from the pattern will conform to the specified sizes. While designing pattern, the allowances commonly considered are discussed below. 1. Shrinkage Allowance Generally metals shrink in size during solidification and cooling in the mould. So casting becomes smaller than the pattern and the mould cavity. Therefore, to compensate for this, mould and the pattern should be made larger than the casting by the amount of shrinkage. The amount of compensation for shrinkage is called the shrinkage allowance. Generally shrinkage of casting varies not only with material but also with shape, thickness, casting temperature, mould temperature, and mould strength. Therefore, it is better to determine the amount of shrinkage according to the past record obtained from many experiences. Table 1.2 shows an average amount of shrinkage for important cast metals. Table 1.2 Typical shrinkage allowances for important casting metals Type of metal Amount of shrinkage (%) Grey cast irons 0.55-1.00 White cast irons 2.10 Malleable cast irons 1.00 Steels 2.00 Manganese steel 2.60 Magnesium 1.80 Type of metal Zinc Brasses Bronzes Aluminium Aluminium alloys Tin Amount of shrinkage (%) 2.60 1.30-1.55 1.05-2.10 1.65 1.30-1.60 2.00 In practice, pattern makers use a special rule or scale, called the “pattern maker’s contraction rule”, which, after providing with necessary allowance, is slightly...

Memo Assignment

...To:          The Honorable Winona I. Zard, Mayor of Emerald City From:  Date:       November 14, 2011 Subject: Informative report on Colin Sell’s interior decor options Mr. Sell recently bought an old 1909 Craftsman house in the First Hill neighborhood. The classic foursquare house was turned into four separate households. Mr. Sell sent us a letter on October 28 asking about the benefits of a consultation to renovate his entire home. I replied to the letter on October 31 explaining the benefits. Then, Mr. Sell decided to continue with the consultation and I went to see the property on November 2. After I checked out the property, I saw old wooden floor, old window dressings and suspected leaded paint. According to the EPA's Office of Research and Development's "Total Exposure Assessment Methodology (TEAM) Study" (Volumes I through IV, completed in 1985), organic pollutants are found two to five times higher inside homes than outside. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are commonly used in certain wall coverings, floorings, and window dressings which can affect health. Therefore, it is very important to be aware of environmentally friendly materials for the renovation to reduce the level of VOCs. I analyzed options for Mr. Sell’s wall covering, flooring, and windows dressing based on their cost-effectiveness and environmental friendliness while maintaining the home’s architectural integrity. Wall covering There are two types of wall covering: paint and wallpaper. These...

Assesement of Effect of Cutting Fluids

...reported to protect cutting tool from the generated heat during machining operations. The selection of coated cutting tools is an expensive alternative and generally it is a suitable approach for machining hard materials. Another alternative is to apply cutting fluids in machining operation. Cutting fluids used to provide lubrication and cooling effects between cutting tool and workpiece and cutting tool and chip during machining operation. As a result, important benefits would be achieved such longer tool life, easy chip flow and higher machining quality in the machining processes. The selection, method of application, storage and disposal of cutting fluids should be carefully carried out to obtain optimum result in machining processes. Metal cutting fluids change the performance of machining operations because of their lubrication, cooling, and chip flushing functions. Besides, they are major source of pollution from machining industries. Minimum quantity of lubricant (MQL), dry machining, Cryogenic Machining and Air cooling are an alternative method for desirable control of cutting temperature. Key words:...

...INDIAN PAINT INDUSTRY: OVERVIEW Colours have always been an integral part of the Indian culture and paint is what makes the surrounding things and the homes people live in acquire the colour of their choice. Informally, the Indians started using paint centuries ago, zhen they used herbal colours to make cave paintings and religious figurines. Formally, the Indian paint industry is more than 100 years old. Its beginning can be traced back to the setting up of a factory by Shalimar Paints in Calcutta (now Kolkata) in 1902. Till the end of World War II, the industry consisted of small producers and two foreign companies. After the war, the imports stopped which resulted in the setting up of manufacturing facilities by local entrepreneurs. Still, the foreign companies continued to dominate the market. Presently, the industry has around 12 major players in the organised sector and more than 2000 producers in the unorganised sector The Indian paints industry has seen remarkable changes during the last decade. In this period, almost every major multinational has established or entrenched their presence, incumbents have built on their market position and the industry has become far more sophisticated in terms of the products it manufactures, the way it sells to customers and in the range of technologies it uses. The growth of the industry is not surprising; after all, paint demand is intimately tied to GDP, which has grown at record levels for much of the decade. Overall, paint demand...

...Glock Essentials pg. 1 Glock Essentials Justin Hoyle Davidson County Community College Mec 145 Mike Davis February 11, 2012 Glock Essentials pg. 2 Abstract To hear the words ‘plastic pistol’ is to instantly think of the Glock Safe action pistol. Introduced in 1982 by engineer Gaston Glock of Austria, the Glock pistol was the first of its kind to combine polymer and steel components in a single firearm. Glock pistols are also the first to introduce a material enhancement technique known as Tenifer. The combining of polymer and steel components along with the introduction of a Tenifer finish has revolutionized the world of handguns. This literary review examines the three main components that make up a Glock Safe Action Pistol: the development and use of polymer in the frame, use of ordinance grade steel, and the Tennifer® anticorrosion finish applied to the ordinance steel in the handgun. This examination of Glock components will reveal the composition of the selected materials. I will also bring to light any environmental and safety issues. Lastly, this review will discuss the impact of these materials on the firearms industry. Glock Essentials pg. 3 To begin with, as previously stated Gaston glock of Austria Developed and introduced the Glock pistol in 1982. Being that Mr. Glock had no previous firearm experience, developing pistols for the Austrian army would be thought of as a challenge. However this was not true due to the fact that Mr....
