...23 September 2015 Risks Worth Taking? A Reflection on the Effects of Memoirs The primary purpose of my research paper is to present a cross-section of the current conversations taking place around the way memoirs affect the writers who publish them. Based on my research, it appears that the effects tend to involve emotional and psychological consequences, as well as legal troubles in some instances. The discovery of this conversation helped me to refine my research topic into the question, “Do the benefits of publishing a memoir outweigh the risks of their effects for writers?” This research explores the positive and negative effects of memoirs on their writers to determine whether or not the risks are worth the rewards. Although writing a memoir can result in lawsuits and family discord, it more often proves to be therapeutic and can be the starting point of a nonfiction writer's career. What if I told you that memoirs are incredibly important to our society, because they document the human experience in such an honest way? Although they are valuable, they can also be risky. One key issue is that a memoir’s admissions risk causing major drama for writers, including legal trouble. In addition, they can be a catalyst for burning bridges with former employees. They can also potentially destroy long-term personal relationships. In this paper, I work to discover if it is worth all the drama to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. As I began my research...

...EN1320 9/27/14 Unit 2 Assignment 3 Elliot Hulse Motivation can from a myriad of sources. Mentors, books, movies, and music. For the particular goals I’m working towards, I get my motivation from a YouTube channel named “Strength Camp”. Now I’m not a die-hard social media buff by any means, however I can’t help but to give credit where it’s due. Elliot Hulse is the founder and creator of the Strength Came gym in Tampa, FL. I stumbled across his channel about two years ago, looking for a workout regimen, and the rest is history. Elliot is a pro strong man and strength coach, who provides motivational and instructional video blogs available for anyone with questions about strength and physical fitness. Elliot also pushes a more intellectual approach by fusing the body with the mind, his method is simply train your mind and your body will follow. With any mental and physical balance, a certain eating habit has to emerge, which is simply eat for the body you want. The saying “Athletes are not born, they are made” is especially true for his upbringing. Elliot grew up playing high school and college football, with was and excellent baseline for his true calling. Before Strength Camp, He participated in professional Strong Man competitions and eventually buckled down and opened his own gym. His impulse was not the smartest move financially, but the debt he accumulated with the new gym and a little girl on the way lit a fire under him to make this move a success. What...

...The fire service should be one of the best careers a person should have. Yes it is often a mystery why we running into burning buildings where other people are running out. It is a sense of bravery, determination and will. Firefighters always look forward to “slaying the dragon,” as fire is referred to in a fire house. But fire fighting in the south has taken a backseat to the new kid on the block which is medical calls. The bottom line is this a career in which people get into to help others and to provide the best outcome possible in dangerous situations whether it be a raging fire or a serious medical injury. The problem with this is the standard of excellence is starting to decline. The reason is due to the three factors I have note previously and I will look into explaining each. Lets first look into rookie firefighters. They are often new young men and women looking to develop their first career in life. They are fresh out of the fire academy, Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) school, Paramedic school or a combination of both. They are wet behind the eyes looking for guidance with hunger in their eyes. No wait that is what they should look like. Instead most of the time these individuals come into the service thinking they know everything at hand because they have been through school though they lack on the street experience. They are called Generation X. These Generation X individuals have a different outlook on self expectations and respect for authority. (Goblet...

...Running head: vehicle backing procedures Vehicle backing procedures Duane A. Nelson Idaho State University Vehicle Backing Procedures The fire service is commonly recognized throughout history by the images of fire apparatus responding to fires. On these apparatus are fire fighters standing on the tailboard, preparing for their duties. These images are a thing of the past. The regulations, standards and most local policies of today do not allow these actions. Prevention measures including closed cabs, NFPA driving standards, and vehicle backing devices are all types of measures to keep fire fighters from falling from the apparatus or being injured by apparatus backing. Even as we have put these preventive measures into place fire fighters continue to be injured or killed. Vehicle Backing NIOSH Fatality Report The injury or fatality of a fire fighter is a catastrophic event, but when this event should be able to be prevented it is especially difficult. The event on August 14, 2004 report F2005-01, showed us again how quickly such accidents can occur. After an incident involving multiple apparatus responded; units began to be terminated, one apparatus needed to be backed out of the area. During this backing operation a 25-year-old female career fire fighter died when she apparently fell from the tailboard and was backed over. During this fatality as per the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) of this department, the fire fighter was riding on the tailgate...

...Nicole Ceraso 12/17/13 Mrs. Fialkow- Period 1 Fahrenheit 451 1. According to Beatty, the need for firemen started around the Civil War. Everything was fireproof, and there was no need for firemen to extinguish fires. Books caused issues among the world and fire fighters thought that it would be easier to destroy books. Beatty says “A book is a loaded gun in the house next door.” People in this society believed that books made people feel unequal. 2. An intellectual is someone who knows a lot about a lot of subjects and someone who is intelligent or bright. I believe that intellectual pursuits are valued in our society. I believe this because if you are an intellectual and if you are well rounded and bright, you will be successful and if you are an intellectual in various subjects, your opportunity will be greater to become more successful. I believe that intellectual pursuits are valued in our school. I believe this because school is all about knowledge and vast knowledge. School is all about testing and how intelligent one is. The quest for intelligence is valued harshly in our society. Students are pushed and pushed to do well in school in order to go far in life. 3. There are many similarities between Bradbury’s futuristic world and our own world today. One similarity is how Montag has to make many decisions in his life like we do today. Montag...

...Abstract Firefighters do not try to sale customers, or patients, products, but instead offer their local community a service. The service is usually dangerous, or a customer’s life is in danger. In order for firefighters to offer a superior service they rely on training, effective tools/equipment, and an adequate number of firefighters on emergency scenes. Operations management can apply to every fire department, and help to make each department more successful. Material requirements planning (MRP) can help fire departments to develop incident action plans for any type of emergency they may face. A MRP can help a fire department be better prepared for emergencies by knowing what equipment they need, how much inventory they need, potential customers, and an estimate for the number of potential emergencies. The just-in-time approach will allow fire departments to overcome emergencies with a focus on effectiveness and a reduced inventory. The limited inventory with this approach will save fire department money by limiting storage and service fees. Implementing a maintenance program into a fire department’s training program will ensure the department has capable employees who can handle the frequent stressful situations they encounter. Firefighters are constantly seeking ways to improve themselves, and the operations management tools will help every firefighter become successful on emergency scenes. Introduction: I will...

...In my senior year in high school I was told several stories about a certain family member of mine and how he was a firefighter. Neleigh Parks (my Great-Grandfather), a man I looked up to, was a volunteer firefighter. So that inspired me to become one. One day out of the blue I decided to approach my mother about it. She was very supportive of my decision to become a firefighter. It took a couple of months for me to gain the courage to actually go to the firehouse and talk to the people. I was curius to find out what it took to become one. After finding out such requirements I decided to persue it. So many people were proud of my decision to join. Most importantly proud of myself. Every third monday the fire department would have business meetings. These meetings a firehouse would vote on budgets, agendas, etc. Here they would also vote on prospects for the department. October of the year of 2009 was that fateful night. I was on the dockett for the membership board to vote on prospects. The whole night the probationarys and myself were stuck cleaning the engine bay. This involved sweeping, mopping, and surface cleaning. Two hours later every voting member came out. Shaking in nervousness and excitement I was waiting for an answer back. The chief of the department came out and approached me and gave me my verdict. "Congratulations probie" the chief said. In total shock I lit up a cigarette and said thank you to every voting member. With the meeting over and done with I walked...

...Local Firefighters Are Furloughed Even though the city needs more money, firefighters do not deserve furloughs because they do not make much money and most have to work second jobs. It is imperative to department morale that they receive adequate monetary compensation, without relying on a second job. Furloughs Firefighters do not deserve furloughs. Local firefighters are on 24-hour shifts in an A, B, and C block schedule. There were two furlough days during the year, on specified holidays. This meant whether or not the firefighter was working on that specified holiday he or she would not be paid for it. Morale Furloughs had a detrimental effect on morale in the department. No one wants to work and not be paid for it. The furlough also made the people in the department believe that their hard work was not appreciated, and unneeded. It is unfortunate that short lived fixes, such as layoffs and furloughs are becoming the norm and are negatively affecting morale and the quality of service (Duggan, Lewis, & Milluzzi, 2010). Causes Strain Firefighters often have to work two jobs. People in the emergency service industry do not join this field for money. The majority of firefighters at the City of Charleston work at the fire department full time, and work another job part-time. They work two jobs out of necessity, not from the enjoyment of working two jobs. Most people do not want to work a 24-hour shift to have to go straight to another job without the ability...

...At the suggestion of a reader, It was suggested I consider writing an article concerning Volunteerism. As I I accepted the challenge with great anticipation. I am reminded that I too am a volunteer, and have been now for more than 7 years, and I must admit I never thought in a million years I would have accomplished the goals that I have, nor entertain any thoughts of the amount of responsibility I now have. The feelings of accomplishment are incredible. I chose to join a volunteer organization because I wanted to help others as others before me. At some point in everyone’s life we are reliant on someone else for an emergency of some type. Becoming a volunteer allows you the opportunity to not only return the favor but also get a little something in return. It’s a nice way of saying thank – you. During his State of the Union Address, President George W. Bush called on all Americans to give at least two years of their lives -- the equivalent of 4,000 hours -- of service to their neighborhoods, communities and the Nation. I encourage everyone who is reading this article to meet that challenge. This is a small price to pay for the rewards you will receive in return. Many people volunteer for a variety of different reasons, I have always felt the need to help others, and will probably continue, to my dying days, but that’s just me. How about you? What are some reasons why you want to volunteer? But you should also look into what’s in it for you. There’s nothing wrong...

...becoming in control of a fire. Flameovers and backdrafts are not consider stages, but also are definitely factors of a fire. These factors sometimes can be prevented. Some methods of prevention are taugh at fire academies, or fire schools, to new firefighters, and are constistly being developed. Incipient, also know as the "ignition" stage, is the first stage of a fire. In this stage smoke may began before the fire actually flames up. This is the stage where heat, oxygen, and a fuel source combine to ignite the fire. At this stage it can be controlled by a household fire extinguinsher. Growth is the second stage of a fire. With the initial flame used as a heat sourse, more flames flare up. Flaring up makes the size of the fire increase and the plume reaches the ceiling. In a room hot gases meet at the celing of the roomwhich cause all fuels in that room to be closer to its ignition temperature. In which the fire will eventually spread. During this growth stage is when a flashover can happen. Flashovers occur when a room or other areas becomes heated to the point where flames flashover the entire surface. Temperatures soar to as much as one thousand degrees Fahrenheit in a few seconds. In full gear, a well trained firefighter is unlikely...

...management (span of authority). Use your organization or one that you are familiar with to give examples. Authority is the right to direct others or give orders. Span of management is the scope of supervision, or the number of people who report to a single manager. Chain of command is a chain of authority flowing downward from top-level management to subordinate managers (Dunn, 2012, p. 215). I used to work as an EMT/Firefighter. In a fire department chain of command is very much followed. The chief managers the department and employees, this is an example of span of authority. The chief answers to the township board. Chain of command from top to bottom in our department was as followed, chief, assistant chief, captain, lieutenant, senior firefighter, probationary firefighter, and cadet. Cadets and probationary could come to senior firefighters with questions or for advice although senior firefighters had no real authority in the department. Each officer had more responsibilities and authority the further up the ladder you went. If I, as a senior firefighter, had an issue I would take it to on of my lieutenants, who would then either come up with a solution or take it to the next officers meeting to get insight from the other officers and chief. 2. ...Discuss the possible damage with short term and long-term complications of a firefighter inhaling heated air and in respiratory distress. Prioritize the necessary interventions to stabilize the patient. Then discuss an in-depth plan of care for recovery. Smoke inhalation is known as the leading cause of death due to fires. Firefighters are trained to recognize the dangerous short-term effects of smoke exposure caused by carbon monoxide and tiny particles absorbed into the lungs. The inhalation of heated air produces injury through several mechanisms, including thermal injury to the upper airway, irritation or chemical injury to the airways from soot, asphyxiation, and toxicity from carbon monoxide. In most cases firefighters can wear devices...
