...Honors First-Year Reflection Essay The most important three learning objectives for me are written and oral communication skills, context-driven research skills, and active participation in the UMW community. Written and oral communication skills make up the basis for presentations of your work. I am far better at written communication than am oral. My teachers in high school stressed the proper ways to write essays to be clear and show our knowledge on the topic, so I was able to learn that before college. That being said, writing papers is always something that can be improved upon. Sometimes I get off topic in my papers, straying from my thesis and arguing completely different points than I mean to. With practice in my classes hopefully I can solve my paper writing issues. Oral communication I struggle far more in. While I have done lot of presentations before, I have serious stage fright, which causes me to forget what I am supposed to say or jumble my words. In high school I was able to get through by just doing the baseline for presentations and making up for it in my other work. This won’t work for important college presentations While I know that stage fright is unsolvable, I hope the honors program capstone project presentation will teach me how to present better and speaking center can help me manage my stress....

...12/05/13 Reflection on my first year at University Gibbs reflective model (1988) will be used. And I will discuss my first year in University. And the opportunities that I have been given in order to enhanced my skills, abilities, awareness and understanding of my role Reflection Semester I started this course as a student As my first semester is coming to an end, This way of learning is completely different to anything I have done before. As a high school student over thirty five years ago, I learnt everything parrot fashion and was assessed by examination only - I lost interest very quickly. So to experience this different way of learning will encourage me to be more creative in my work, my confidence is improving and I am pleased with my performance in my first year though I did feel particularly anxious, stretched and challenged. I have gained knowledge on essay writing, referencing and a variety of research methods which have all been helpful. I see these skills as the basic tools I will need to progress through my course and complete the foundation degree and hopefully, these will be transferable Productive and rewarding. My first year has made me become more positive when accepting ideas from others. I learnt it is okay to say if you do not think somebody’s suggestion will work but in doing so I need to give my reasons and suggest an alternative. My studying and my work based learning has helped me greatly with communication, problem solving and critical thinking...

...Epistemological Reflection in the First Year Experience Course Program Charge The Student Development Division staff subcommittee of ABC Community College has been tasked to present to the Dean of Student Affairs a theory based program to foster student development. The subcommittee proposes a revision to the first year experience course curriculum which will integrate outcomes based on Baxter Magolda’s Model of Epistemological Reflection. Proposed Program Goal and Context Overall, this program is designed to “validate students as knowers, situate learning in the students’ experiences, encourage the processes of jointly constructed knowledge, and facilitate learning relationships that empower students” (Bock, 1999, p. 39). More specifically, the First Year Experience Curriculum Revision will challenge first-year community college students’ assumptions about the nature, limits, and certainty of knowledge (Evans et al., 2010, p. 125). Target Demographic The traditional and nontraditional community college students enrolled in a first year experience course are the target demographic for this program. While the average age of the community college student is twenty nine years old, the students enrolled in the first year experience course will range from new high school graduates to working adults. Program Description The proposed student development initiative will be carried out through curriculum revision of a First Year Experience Course. This course will...

...This year in Humanities my confidence in sharing my opinion with the class dramatically increased due to the great work environment you provided. Going into this semester being my first year in college I was not planning on speaking up and giving my opinion in class. I had been a to myself person throughout high school and to some extent I still am but what i've learned is when I ask questions and give my opinion not only does it help me but it also gives the rest of the class a different perspective. Now with my new perspective as a student I believe it's my job in a way to bring up points because there's a good chance someone else in the class has a similar question and if I remain silent as well as my classmates we are only hurting ourselves. As a class I believe that we had very good attendance, personally I didn't miss a class. The reason behind that is I picked up...

...Examples of Reflective Writing Example 1 I arrived on the ward at 7:30 ready to begin a 12-hour shift. After receiving handover, my mentor assigned me the job of bathing Mr B with the help of a healthcare assistant. Mr B has Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD), a progressive disease of the nervous system with rapid deterioration due to spongiform encephalopathy. He is not expected to live to Christmas, even though he is only 19 years old. He is mentally aware of what is going on but is physically unable to demonstrate activities of daily living, including eating and drinking, has limited communication skills and is doubly incontinent. He is unsafe on his feet so mobilises with a wheelchair. I approached Mr B’s bed and asked his consent to take him for a bath. While the bath was running we began helping him to undress. He looked rather nervous. At the thought of myself being in his position, being the same age as him, I began to feel embarrassed too. I thought that I could not possibly be a professional individual if I let my embarrassment and sympathy get in the way of my nursing care. We assisted Mr B into the bath and started his wash. I knew he was uncomfortable and wanted to be able to wash himself, but was unable to do so. I was finding it difficult to look him in the eye, especially when it came to washing his genitalia. I tried to ease this by making conversation, but in a way this made matters worse. After the bath we dried Mr B, dressed him and returned him...

...2011 Page 2 PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE The title ‘Summer Reflections’ that I am using for this newsletter is purposefully ambiguous as I wanted to mention another type reflection. Many years ago my wife built a small pond in our garden and each year it is populated with goldfish, although this year we have only two. This year is the first year that we have had frog spawn, which have now turned into tadpoles. I thought I would try to take a photograph of one of them. I could see it clearly under the water, but when I pointed the camera at it, the camera only saw the back of our house reflected in the surface of the water. The photographers will tell me to use a filter; it is well known that photography through water is difficult! I was intrigued with the reflection and how bright and persistent it was. I was reminded that when people look at us they will sometimes see what we are like, and they will sometimes see a reflection of Jesus in us, and often a mixture of both. In 2Cor 3:18 Paul indicates that the Holy Spirit will be transforming us into the likeness of Jesus in an ever greater degree of glory. I suggest that people will see the reflection of Jesus more clearly when our own lives have fewer ripples, splashes and disturbances in it. This summer my goal is to allow my life to reflect Jesus better. I offer that to you as one of the best goals for this summer. May God bless you, as you enjoy Him and as he enjoys you. This year has seen a whole gamut of situations at SCS ranging...

...hospital setting during the first month of my Foundation Degree Assistant Practitioner course. It will explore the importance of communication amongst the health care professionals and how a good nursing documentation is an integral part of nursing. It will also demonstrate how reflection enabled me to make sense of and learn from this experience, as well as identify any further learning developments needed to improve my practice and achieve the level of competency needed for when I qualify as an assistant practitioner. While discussing the knowledge underpinning practice, evidence based literature will be reviewed to support my discussion and for the purpose of reflection the essay will be written in the first person. Spouse, J, et al (2008). Jonhs, C (2009) defined reflection as learning through our every day experiences, towards realising one’s vision of desirable practice as a lived reality. He also added that it is a critical and a flexible process of self inquiry and transformation of being and becoming the practitioner you desire to be. However, Ghaye, T et al. (2000) stated that for the health care professionals to develop a more reflective posture, they must fully embrace both the principles and the practices of reflection. It is about becoming more aware of how we learn and how this affects what we think, feel and do. There are different models for reflection; some are more complex and detailed than others. To help me with my reflection, I have chosen Gibbs (1988)...

...“Where I Was’ Reflection Colby Gordillo ITT Tech GS 1145 Bart Demeter July 5, 2014 “Where I Was” Reflection . A few years ago I graduated from high school, and started working in the factory industry one month after. A few months later I attended college at Grand Rapids Community College. At that time, I did not know I was going to fail and drop out three times at that same college. And, then attend two other colleges. All of this had happened in the past 4 years. The reason as to why I had failed so many times was that I was not ready for school. I felt that I was ready because of just finishing high school, and that I would have that same mentality. Apparently I was wrong about that and it took me a few years to realize that. The first time I attended GRCC; I completed the first four weeks and then I dropped out. The second time I attended GRCC; I had to get off suspension and then I completed about two months, until I dropped out again. After that, I took a year off from school. When a year had passed I tried to return but I was on suspension once again. This time I was suspended from school and financial aid. By that time, I realized that I had dug a hole after my first fall out and it just got bigger. This hole had gotten so big, that I saw no point in attending GRCC anymore. I tried out the University of Phoenix and completed the first quarter with an A and B. I decided I didn’t like the online experience. Less than a month after, I signed up for ITT Tech. I...

...a personal narrator that is bound to the main character Gerard. It is a personal narrator because the narrator reduces his point of view to one person whose inner thoughts are the only thought s the reader is told about e.g. : “He wonders if his life is an extraordinary one” (l. 10). As this line from the text also shows, Gerard reflects a lot indifferent phenomena and things he has experienced. These reflections often originate from a specific observation he makes, which result in reflections on history and life. This movement from reflections on a specific thing to reflections on more abstract things as Life makes some parts of the short story very similar to the essay genre. For example: at first Gerard reflects about footprints in the snow (l. 4) and this reflection leads to reflections about the Indians who once lived in Manhattan(l. 5-6), which again leads to reflections about his own identity (l. 7-9)The story takes place New York, where Gerard probably lives. The mood in the text plays an important part in the story. In the beginning of the text Gerard’s reflections creates a very glorious, overwhelming atmosphere, because he thinks of his own life compared with the billions of other people who lived before him (l. 4-25). The atmosphere in this part of the text also...

(3) Civic Welfare Training Service is a program that trains the students to contributing for the general welfare of the life of the members of the community. During my first year in Xavier University I have taken up the required one-year formative and holistic program the NSTP LTS 1 and 2. There were only 2 main agenda of the program and those were the 1) Class Session which includes Reflection and Reporting and, 2) The Work Area/Community Exposure which includes Assessment of the student being handled by us or the tutee, Reflection and Reporting. Literature Training Service (LTS) mainly focuses on the enrichment of children’s or tutees learning skills that were living in the rural areas. During the first half of the semester we were first trained various lessons and activities that we need to reflect later on. The training includes enhancing our own skills on how to teach young children, training and on how to be good leaders for the youth. Most of the sessions were inspired by the Ignatian Pedagogical...
