...COMMUNITY FEEDBACK ON WATER WATER QUALITY ANALYSIS TECHNOLOGY REVIEW RECOMMENDATIONS FURTHER WORKS ADDITIONAL INNOVATIVE OPTIONS FOR CONSIDERATION WASTE WATER TREATMENT ANALYSIS EDUCATIONAL SUPPORT MAINTENANCE REQUIREMENTS TECHNOLOGY REVIEW RECOMMENDATIONS All households in Devikulam use water from the village tank for drinking and cooking. Households in the village have their own taps linked to the village supply, however households in the colony are not directly linked to the village supply, they use a common tap to attain suitable drinking water. Access to the village tap for drinking water is only available for one hour in the morning and one hour in the evening, thus water is collected in large vessels for daily use. Households in the colony also have common taps, linked to the water tank in the colony, however due to the quality of this water it is not suitable for drinking and is used only for washing and cleaning. Water Supply Analysis The development of a safe and reliable water supply system has vast economic, social and environmental benefits to the Devikulum community. Currently, the community water is supplied from three different bores, one of which has been identified as ‘saline’ by those living in the colony. Water from this bore is not used for human consumption but for other purposes such as washing, flushing and cleaning. The two other bores along with a 30 000 litre storage tank and a thorough distribution network supply is used for all...

...fertilizers in the water, aquaponics uses fish to fertilize the plants. This is helpful because the fish help the garden stay maintained at a certain rate or more sustainable. The aquaponic gardening system is the most modern growing technology in gardening today. This essay will outline how aquaponics work, the uses of aquaponics, and the future of modern gardening. The beauty of aquaponics is that the system is relatively simple to understand. There are three main parts to an aquaponic system, the growing media, the siphon system, and the fish tank. The growing medium usually consists of hydroponic expanded clay rocks. The specific rocks one uses should be based off the plant species (Silcox, 2013). For example, using smaller rocks means less oxygen to the plants. On the other hand, using bigger rocks means less surface area. Aquaponic gardeners typically use rocks between 8mm-16mm in diameter. Around the growing medium of an aquaponic system, one may see pipes releasing water onto the rocks. The pipes are apart of a simple siphon system. The system starts in the fish tank and literally pulls water from the fish tank up to the growing medium where the plants are located. Typically for ebb and flow systems, the most popular form aquaponic systems, one will use bell siphons. Bell siphons make it possible to regulate the water in the growing bed so the plants never get flooded with water but they also never get too little water. The fish tank...

...the aquatic environment are increasing the scientific research done on toxic dinoflagellate species. Contaminated bivalves are causing paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) and diarrhetic shellfish poisoning in humans (DSP); with the number of cases increasing steadily in the last 40 years. Toxins released by certain species of the phylum dinoflagellate are the cause of this spreading contamination. Algal bloom locations are dictated by water currents and synaptic weather patterns, and their movement makes it difficult to pinpoint the origin of these blooms. Measuring the level of toxins in shellfish is currently the best way to chart the growing density of these blooms, and to prove the masses of algae are of growing concern. In this review the negative impact dinoflagellate algal blooms are having on aquaculture, human health hazards, and reasons for the increasing frequencies/densities of blooms will be covered; additional information on the shortcomings of incomplete scientific data complied on algal blooms and why scientific research is now being sought after will be reviewed. BACKGROUND Few species of phytoplankton produce toxins, but dinoflagellates have species that release two different types of toxins. Dinoflagellates are forming large aggregations called algal blooms with increasing frequency and density. There are two toxins produced by dinoflagellate species: brevetoxins and neuortoxins. Brevetoxins cause the milder human illness diarrhetic shellfish poisoning...

Aquaponics serves as a model of sustainable food production by fol low ing certain principles: • The waste products of one biological system serve as nutrients for a second biological system. • The integration of fish and plants results in a polyculture that increases diversity and yields multiple products. • Water is re-used through biological filtration and recirculation. • Local food production provides access to healthy foods and enhances the local economy. In aquaponics, nutrient-rich effluent from fish...

...Research shows that fish respond to painful stimuli in a manner that is not just a simple reflex. In the article “Hooked on a Myth” by Victoria Braithwaite, biologists say “We shouldn’t be so quick to believe that fish don’t feel pain.” The Standing Committee of the European Convention for the Protection of Animals Kept for Farming Purposes explains, "The skin of the fish is the first line of defence against disease and provides protection from the environment. It contains sensory receptors for touch, pressure and pain." In his book Pleasurable Kingdom: Animals and the Nature of Feeling Good, animal behaviorist Jonathan Balcombe, explains how fish are falsely, yet "commonly denied feeling" perhaps because of "their relative lack of facial expression." He states: When they are impaled on a hook, fish don't scream or grimace, though their gaping mouths may evoke a look of shock or horror to the empathetic witness. Using facial expression as a guide for sentience is hardly valid when one considers that some of the most intelligent and highly sentient marine vertebrates namely the dolphins and whales also lack facial expression. However, animals have many other ways of visually signaling their feelings. Crests, dewlaps, mouth-pages, pupil dilation and contraction, color changes, and body postures and movements are among the many visual ways fish and other animals convey emotions. Water is also a potent medium for communicating through chemicals and sounds. Dr. Balcombe examines...

...As a result, these fishes have become excellent candidates for aquaculture, especially in tropical and subtropical regions. Tilapias live in freshwater ecosystems, but can also tolerate water that contains low levels of salt. They are most often grown in ponds, cages and rice fields. Tilapias prefer a warmer water temperature that is why it’s the second most cultured fish in the Philippines. White bean nutrition facts show a complete nutrition source that has significant amounts of essential amino acids, as well as an abundance of unsaturated fat, minerals, vitamins, and protein. Also, it contains no cholesterol and is a great source of plant protein that can substitute for meat, poultry, or other meats. For this reason, white bean is a good source of protein. Due to the high cost of commercial feeds, the researchers thought of utilizing white bean, which is a good source of protein, as main ingredient for an alternative supplemental feeds. Small quantities of fish feed can be made quite easily in the laboratory, classroom or at home, with common ingredients and simple kitchen or laboratory equipment. Fish farmers, hobbyists and anyone interested in aquaculture will not only save money but they will also ensure consistent quality of their fishes. Statement of the Problem The main concern of this research study is to determine if the white bean-based pellets are effective as supplemental feed for the growth of baby tilapia. Furthermore, the researchers will also answer...

...A Review of Literature Related to Oil Spill Dispersants 1997-2008 for Prince William Sound Regional Citizens’ Advisory Council (PWSRCAC) Anchorage, Alaska by Merv Fingas Spill Science Edmonton, Alberta PWSRCAC Contract Number - 955.08.03 Disclaimer: The opinions expressed in this PWSRCAC-commissioned report are not necessarily those of PWSRCAC September, 2008 ii Abstract This report is a review of the literature on oil spill dispersants published from 1997 to August, 2008. The report identifies and focusses on recent advances in dispersant effectiveness, toxicity, and biodegradation. Other topics such as application, use, behaviour and fate are also covered. The prime motivation for using dispersants is to reduce the impact of oil on shorelines, thus the application must be successful and effectiveness high. As some oil would come ashore, discussion remains on what effectiveness is required to significantly reduce the shoreline impact. A major issue is the actual effectiveness during spills so that these values can be used in estimates for the future. The second motivation for using dispersants is to reduce the impact on birds and mammals on the water surface. The benefits of using dispersants to reduce impacts on wildlife still remain unknown. The third motivation for using dispersants is to promote the biodegradation of oil in the water column. The effect of dispersants on biodegradation is still a matter of dispute. Some papers state that dispersants inhibit...

...Krystina Palka 3/17/2013 Final Draft Review My Scaly Neighbor, Friend or Foe? Has your child come home from school, after learning about reptiles in science class and wants one as a pet? Do you or your significant other, have an interest in a pet a bit more exotic than your average cat or dog? It could be simply that you want to embark on a new adventure as a pet owner. What ever your reason maybe, I Think I may have a solution for you. I highly recommend the Bearded Dragon for any first time exotic pet or reptile owner. I have been the proud owner of three beautiful bearded dragons for the past year. At first I was scared to even pick one of them up. Reptiles are not normal pets to most people, so it can be intimidating and overwhelming at first. After getting to know their temperament and behavior, I soon became comfortable in knowing that they meant no harm to me. I learned to look past their rough textured skin and really paid attention to their demeanor. I quickly went from being the owner of one to three bearded dragons in a matter of months. Bearded dragons make great pets for a number of reasons. They are one of the tamest, friendliest reptiles around, compared to the Iguana, whose temperament is unpredictable and can often be aggressive. Reptile owners will agree that if you are new to reptile ownership, the bearded dragon is the best reptile to start off with because of their friendly disposition, hardiness and gentle nature. Bearded Dragons are...

...Review of China Buffet Restaurant I am a food lover, and I enjoyed eating in a Chinese restaurant. I tried different restaurants in our place, but what interests me most is the China Buffet Restaurant. China Buffet is located at Madison Avenue at the heart of Mankato, one of the biggest cities in Minnesota. The restaurant has a seating capacity of approximately 100 people. They have several food stations. Although the name China Buffet speaks for itself, their food stations consist of American, Italian, and Japanese food. The owner purposely includes a variety of food because of competition. I enjoyed eating at China Buffet because of its affordability, delicious food, and the beautiful setting. The price of their buffet is $10 per person, and it includes beverages. There are a variety of salads in their salad station: fruit, vegetable, and seafood. Their main meal is composed of chicken, pork, beef, and fish. For dessert, they serve ice cream, cookies, and different kinds of cakes. For their beverages, they serve soda, milk, juice, and chocolate milk, but tea is my favorite. The food is excellent so it’s well worth the price. China Buffet’s food is excellent and healthy. They have food stations for meat lovers and vegetarians. Their newly-opened sushi and hibachi bar is the restaurant’s crowning glory. Sushi and California maki is my starter with matching wasabi sauce. I tried their hibachi too, but it fills me up right away. The seafood station is...

...[pic] Process flow - step 1 Preliminary treatment bar screen Removal of large objects As wastewater enters LMWQCC, it is screened through bar screens for the removal of objects that could damage or interfere with the process and equipment. Chemical addition Ferrous chloride (FeCl2, an industrial by-product), and lime are added to the sewage before it enters the grit tanks, to improve the subsequent chemical treatment process. Grit removal The effectiveness of the chemicals added in the pre-treatment stage is improved by extra mixing in the grit tanks, and by introducing compressed air into the tanks (aeration). The grit (approx 1.5 tonnes/day) is then pumped to a grit classifier where the wastewater is separated, then further treated. Process flow - step 2 Primary treatment The next stage of treatment takes place in the primary sedimentation tanks. The chemical treatment precipitates phosphates, organics and heavy metals dissolved in the sewage. It is at this stage of the process that polymer is added to cause flocculation (or binding together) of precipitated particles as suspended solids. This assists in settling of the solids to the...

If the belief develops that a person is making poor projections or covering up errors, even small or non-consequential errors their future projections may be ignored or discounted due to this lack of integrity. 2 Ans :- Employees may be hired or laid off due to Daniels projections. In fact those people hired to meet the expectant work load may leave other jobs in order to take a job that does not actually result in a long term employment. Stock holder and other investors in the company make purchase and sell decisions based upon the projections. The government reviews these projections particlularly in publicly traded companies. ...1. What should an employee do when he or she discovers that there is an error in a projection? Why do you suggest that action? Would your answer change if the error was not likely to affect other aspects of the operation such as employment? Why or why not? An employee should immediately report and error when it is discovered. All employees, especially employees who are burdened with the task of making projections which may impact the furute of the company must act with integrity. “According to Mintz, “Integrity is a fundamental trait of character that enables a CPA to withstand client and competitive pressures that might otherwise lead to the subordination of judgment.”3 A person of integrity will act out of moral principle and not expediency. That person will do what is right even if it means the loss of a job or client. In accounting, the public interest (i.e., investors and creditors) always must be placed ahead of the one's own self-interest or the interests of others, including a supervisor or client. (Steven M Mintz 2)” The answer does not change whether it impacts other aspects of operations. Certainly, it is more important to report errors when those errors can impact the company. The integrity of the person making the projection affects the overall reputation and trustworthiness of the individual, the department and the firm as a whole. If the belief develops that a person is making poor projections or covering up errors, even small or non-consequential errors...
