A It is your responsibility to read the assignment carefully and make sure you understand what you need to do and what you should hand in. If you are not sure, check with your tutor.

Q Can I copy other people’s work?

A No. The work that you produce must be your own work and you may be asked to sign a declaration to say that the work is your own. You should never copy the work of other candidates or allow others to copy your work. Any information that you use from other sources, eg books, newspapers, professional journals, the Internet, must be clearly identified and not presented as your own work.

Q Can I work in a group?

A Yes. However, if you work in a group at any stage you must still produce work that shows your individual contribution.

Q How should I present my work?

A You can present your work in a variety of ways, eg hand-written, word-processed, on video. However, what you choose should be appropriate to the task(s). For some work, eg presentations, coaching sessions, role-play, work experience, you will need to provide proof that you completed the task(s). A witness statement or observation sheet could be used for this. If you are unsure, check with your tutor.

Q When I have finished, what do I need to hand in?

A You need to hand in the work that you have completed for each task. Do not include any draft work or handouts unless these are asked for. When you hand in your work make sure that it is labelled, titled and in the correct order for assessing.

Q How will my work be assessed?

A Your work will be marked by an assessor in your centre. The assessor will mark the work using the assessment criteria and the grade descriptors in the qualification specification.

Scenario

As a student attending a course leading to the award of an OCR Level 3 National in Public Services it is your wish to join and serve in one of the uniformed public services. During your studies for Unit 1 Investigating public services, you learn that every applicant to most of the uniformed public services has to take a fitness assessment in order to gain entry and that some of these fitness assessments are quite severe. In addition to this you have also learned that even once you have been selected, fitness training forms part of your initial training and that in many instances if you fall behind the standards that have been set you will be required to leave.

You decide to focus on the physical fitness requirements for your chosen public service. You also realise that fitness training is not something you can leave until just before you apply but that it is a lifestyle choice and something that needs to be built up over a period of time. Finally it dawns on you that training to the minimum standards for selection is not sufficient and that you need to go beyond this in order to give yourself a flying start for initial training.

You and your teacher/lecturer decide that the following areas will need to be covered:

• An understanding of how the components of fitness and the principles of fitness are applied within a fitness training programme

• An evaluation and a performance of the range of fitness tests used by public services

• The design of a personal fitness improvement plan and the implementation of that plan yourself over a period of time

Tasks

Task 1: The Components and Principles of Fitness Training

Assessment Objectives 1 & 4

This task will require an advanced consideration of personal fitness and specifically how knowledge of the components of fitness and the principles of fitness can be applied to maximise development within a fitness training programme.

Your task is to explain the effect on performance of the components of fitness and describe the application of the principles of fitness within a fitness training programme.

Components of Fitness

Health related fitness

• Cardiovascular endurance

• Muscular endurance

• Speed

• Strength (dynamic, explosive, static)

• Flexibility

Skill related fitness

• Balance

• Co-ordination

• Reaction time

• Agility

• Timing

Role in physical activity

• Identification of elements required in different sports and activities

• Effect on performance

Principles of Fitness e.g.

• Specificity

• Overload by means of frequency, intensity or duration

• Progression

• Reversibility

• Recovery periods

The evidence for this task could be provided in the form of a PowerPoint presentation accompanied by associated witness statements. If a presentation format is chosen use the following points as guidelines:

• You will need to prepare a set of slides and presentation notes

• Aim for your presentation to last approximately ten minutes

• Make sure that you practise your presentation beforehand

• Be prepared to answer questions

You should note that if you do decide to give a presentation you will be assessed solely on the content and not on the presentation itself.

Task 2 Tests Used by Public Services

Assessment Objectives 2 & 3

In order to prepare yourself for selection you need to look at the range fitness testing used by public services. You need to perform many of these tests yourself in order to get a realistic assessment of how you would fare if you took those tests today. You also need to identify areas of your fitness that need improvement against public service criteria so that you can in Task 3 devise an appropriate fitness improvement plan.

Your task will be to investigate, explain and justify fitness selection tests used by public services and to analyse your own performance over a range of fitness tests used by public services.

Public Service Fitness Selection Tests e.g.

• Royal Navy

• Army including The Parachute Regiment

• Royal Air Force including Royal Air Force Regiment

• Royal Marines

• Police (your local police force)

• Fire & Rescue Service (your local Fire & Rescue Service)

Simulation of public service tests including:

(Health & Safety – screening prior to participation, health/lifestyle questions (Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire - PARQ))

• Harvard Step Test

• Cooper 12 Minute Run

• Multistage Fitness Test

• Sit ups

• Chins

• Press ups

• Shuttle Run/Bleep Test

• Grip Dynamometer

• 1 Rep Max Test

• Sargent Jump

• Standing Broad Jump

• Sit and Reach

• Shoulder Hyperextension

• Stork Stand

• Alternate Hand/Wall Throw

• Ruler Drop Test

• Illinois Agility Run

• Body Mass Index

• Skin Fold Callipers

• Height/Weight Ratio

Analysis of Results

• Use of normative data

• Use of public service standards

• Production of action plan

Evidence for the evaluation of the public service fitness tests could be presented as a written report. Bearing in mind that you are a Level 3 student mere statements of fact are insufficient and you are expected not only to compare and contrast but also to link the fitness entry requirements to the nature of and the degree of personal fitness required by the subsequent employment.

Evidence for performing the range of fitness tests could take the form of a log with recorded results.

Evidence of the analysis of own fitness against public service criteria could be in the form of a critical report with an action plan.

Throughout the practical sessions health & safety procedures are of paramount importance and each session should be commenced with a warm up and concluded with a cool down.

Task 3: Personal Fitness Improvement Programme

Assessment Objectives 5 & 6

You now need to analyse the different methods of fitness training and one of the most effective ways to do this is to participate in the activities yourself. Accordingly you need to develop your own personal fitness improvement programme based on the analysis you made. . You need to implement this fitness training programme over a period of time e.g. six months, continually recording your results and refining your goals

Your task is to design, carry out, evaluate and refine a personal fitness improvement programme over a period of time.

Procedure

• Analyse through participation the different methods of fitness training

• Devise personal programme

• Carry out programme over time e.g. six months

• Evaluate results

• Edit personal programme

Programme Content Could Include:

• Aerobic training

• Anaerobic training

• Muscular strength, muscular endurance and power training

• Circuit training

• Flexibility training

Process

• Health & Safety

• Frequency, Intensity, Type, Time (FITT)

• Training Zone

• Single Session Training

• Long Term Planning

• Evaluation

Evidence for this task could be presented in the form of a log with accompanying continual analysis and evaluation supported by digital images and witness statements as appropriate.

Guidance For Centres

1 General

1.1 OCR model assignments are issued free to centres on approval and are available to download from our website: www.ocr.org.uk.

1.2 Centres may choose to:

• use OCR model assignments for formal summative assessment of candidates

• tailor OCR model assignments for formal summative assessment of candidates

• use OCR model assignments as a benchmark for devising their own assignment.

1.3 This assignment has been designed to meet the full assessment requirements of the unit. Candidates will need to take part in a planned learning programme that covers the underpinning knowledge and skills of the unit.

2 Before carrying out the assignment

2.1 Candidates should be provided with a copy of the Candidate Information section of this assignment.

2.2 Candidates may carry out preparations prior to undertaking the tasks; there is no time limit for this.

3 When completing the assignment

3.1 Candidates should be allowed sufficient time to complete all of the tasks. The amount of time may vary depending on the nature of the tasks and the ability of individual candidates. It is suggested that evidence is produced in several sessions.

3.2 Each candidate must produce individual and authentic evidence for each task within the assignment.

3.3 Centre staff may give support and guidance to candidates. This support and guidance should focus on checking that candidates understand what is expected of them. It is not acceptable for tutors to provide model answers or to work through answers in detail.

3.4 Candidates may use information from any relevant source to help them with producing evidence for the tasks.

3.5 It is acknowledged that candidates in their responses may refer to situations in the scenario but as the scenario is fictitious this does not break any rules of confidentiality. However, candidates must be guided on the use of information from other sources to ensure that confidentiality is maintained at all times.

4 After completing the assignment

4.1 Candidates’ evidence is assessed by the centre’s assessor against the qualification specification contained in the Centre Handbook. When grading candidates' work centres must use the grading descriptors in the unit. For further information about assessment please refer to the section on Assessment and Moderation in the Centre Handbook.

4.2 Assessors’ decisions should be quality assured across the centre through internal moderation. For further information about internal moderation please refer to the section on Assessment and Moderation in the Centre Handbook.

5 Presentation of work

5.1 Candidates may use the Candidate Checklist provided to ensure that they submit evidence for ALL tasks. They can do this by using the Candidate Checklist as a contents page inserting references/page numbers in the boxes provided.

5.2 Centres may wish to discourage candidates from excessive use of plastic wallets for presentation of their evidence as this may hinder the assessment process. Instead centres may wish to encourage candidates to present their work so that it is easily accessible, eg spiral bound, stapled booklet, treasury tag.

6 Acceptable evidence

6.1 For guidance on generation and collection of evidence please refer to the section on Assessment and Moderation in the Centre Handbook.

7 Reworking the assignment

7.1 If candidates do not meet the minimum PASS requirements for the assessment criteria, further work will be required.

7.2 Tutors may give feedback to candidates to support and guide them in producing evidence to the required standard.

Notes For Tutors

Introduction to the Tasks

The tasks have been designed to enable candidates to develop knowledge and skills associated with fitness testing and planning a personal training programme. They will also develop an understanding of the importance of fitness to the public services.

The tasks have been designed so that all of the assessment criteria in Unit 15 are addressed.

These guidance notes should be used in conjunction with the unit specification and Centre Handbook.

The Tasks

Task 1: The Components and Principles of Fitness Training

Assessment Objectives 1 and 4 are assessed in this task.

For Assessment Objectives 1 and 4 candidates must explain the application of the components and principles of fitness within a fitness training programme. Candidates should be encouraged to view this task as a precursor to them planning for developing their own personal fitness training programme as part of Task 3.

This task could be evidenced in the form of a PowerPoint presentation. If a presentation format is chosen candidates will need to prepare a set of slides and presentation notes and should aim for the presentation to last approximately ten minutes. Tutors should ensure that candidates are able to use, and have access to appropriate software packages.

Candidates should be allowed sufficient time to practice their presentations and should be made aware that they might have to answer questions about their presentation.

Candidates are not required to deliver their presentation to a specific audience. The audience may include the candidates’ peer group or consist of a one-to-one presentation to the tutor.

Tutors will need to complete a detailed witness statement which provides feedback for the candidate and which will be submitted as evidence for this task to the Visiting Moderator. If the tutor asks questions at the end of the presentation, the questions and answers should be recorded as extra evidence. A tutor witness statement is provided at the end of this section. Alternatively, tutors may use their own documentation or video recordings as evidence.

The quality, or otherwise, of the presentation should not form part of the assessment of this task.

Task 2: Practical Fitness Tests Used by Public Services

Assessment Objectives 2 and 3 are assessed in this task.

For Assessment Objective 2 candidates are to investigate, explain and justify a range of selection tests used by public services. As Level 3 students they are expected to go beyond the mere statement of facts and to engage in compare and contrast, additionally some linkage between the fitness entry requirements of stated public services and the degree of personal fitness required by the subsequent employments is necessary.

For Assessment Objective 3 candidates will be required to investigate and undertake a range of physical fitness tests, therefore opportunities to experience a wide variety of tests used by the public services (e.g. bleep test, assault courses, ladder climb etc) are essential. Centres must dictate a minimum number of practical sessions that candidates must attend to provide sufficient opportunities to develop familiarity and competency. They must also demonstrate an understanding of the rules and constraints of testing and health & safety procedures (e.g. cool downs, equipment and testing environment.)Additionally candidates will be required to record and analyse their personal results to assess their own fitness against public service standards and to produce an action plan which will be used as the starting point for Task 3.

It would be useful to visit fitness facilities within public service workplaces and to invite fitness instructors from the services to run sessions whenever possible in order to raise candidates’ awareness and provide opportunities for them to gain a genuine insight. Candidates should be encouraged to participate in physical activities outside practical timetabled sessions within the centre.

Tutors will need to complete a detailed witness statement which provides feedback for the candidate and which will be submitted as evidence for this task to the Visiting Moderator. If the tutor asks questions these should be recorded as extra evidence. A tutor witness statement is provided at the end of this section. Alternatively, tutors may use their own documentation.

Task 3: Personal Fitness Training Programme

Assessment Objectives 5 and 6 are assessed in this task.

For this task candidates will need to analyse through participation the different methods of fitness training and develop a personal training programme. They must use the personal analysis and action plan created as a result of undertaking Assessment Objective 3 as part of Task 2 to develop a personal fitness improvement programme in which they should participate over a period of time e.g. six months. Re-assessment should take place periodically during participation in the programme in the light, hopefully, of improving fitness levels. Candidates are required to record their performance/attendance in a log as evidence.

Guest speakers such as sport coaches, dieticians and nutritionists would enhance candidates understanding and knowledge on this topic providing much of this specialist information.

The evidence for this task could be presented in the form of the log as above with accompanying continual analysis supported by digital images and witness statements as appropriate.

...1. Executive Summary NextGen Fitness will serve North Philadelphia area school age children, helping them to become more productive, while lowering their overall health risk with innovative wellness programs and strategies. Our business is based on two simple facts: 1. Healthy school age children are more productive than chronically ill and overweight children. 2. It costs less to prevent injuries or illnesses than to treat them after they occur. At NextGen Fitness, we tie learning ability and productivity directly to the health care issue. We believe that traditional approaches to the current fitness and health care crisis are misdirected or nonexistent in most urban neighborhoods. These traditional efforts are what we call reactive--that is, they minimally address fitness levels then when illness or injury occurs, public assistance and basic health aide is provided as both solution and treatment. Our approach, which emphasizes prevention and good health promotion, is much more proactive. By helping school age youth change their behavior patterns and choose more healthy and active lifestyles, NextGen will lower parent’s health care expenditures and subsidies provided by healthcare organizations, while raising academic productivity. Health care expenditures will decrease due to reduced medical insurance premiums, reduced risk of obesity, reduced physical injuries and removal from prescription drugs that currently address these issues. 2.
