Flower Power

On October 21, 1967, a large demonstration took place at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington. As many as 100,000 demonstrators attended the event, and at least 30,000 later marched to the Pentagon for another rally and an all night vigil. The civil disobedience on the steps of the Pentagon was interrupted by clashes with soldiers and police. In all, 647 arrests were made. A plot to airdrop 10,000 flowers on the Pentagon was foiled by undercover agents. After the airdrop was halted the flowers intended for the airdrop were placed in the barrels of officer’s rifles resulting in the iconic images from the “flower power” movement. The slogan “flower power”, coined by poet Allen Ginsberg in 1965, was used by the American counter-culture resistance as a symbolic action of protest against the Vietnam War. A surge of peaceful demonstration protesters were handed masses of flowers to offer policemen, press, and politicians as retaliation and defiance against the war. The flowers served two purposes: one as symbols of passive resistance of non-violence and secondly as emblems to reduce negative energy and connotations associated with feelings of fear, anger, threats, prosecution - all which were frequent results of these anti-war demonstrations. Photographs of flower-wielding protesters at the Pentagon March became seminal images of the 1960s anti-war protests. The image I chose to analyze is a photo by French photojournalist Marc Riboud of a seventeen-year-old high school student, Jan Rose Kasmir, clasping a daisy and gazing at bayonet-wielding soldiers on the steps of the Pentagon. This photo embodies the flower power movement by illustrating a strategic juxtaposition of armed forces against flower power innocence. The lighting of the picture helps develop this juxtaposition. It creates a brightness that forms a highlighted contour of her face. The highlights on her face make her face look supple adding to the vibe of youth and free expression that she is trying personify. This is a stark contradiction against the stern dark faces of the officers she is opposing. The comparison created by the lighting separates the two sides, the flower child who embodies free expression against the armed officers symbolizing conformity and rule following. Although the officers are armed and in position they seem somewhat intrigued by the flower girls peace offering. The soldier on the left is pointing his gun in her direction as if he wants her to put flowers in her gun next. The lighting also slightly illuminates the right side of his face and helmet. The combination of the officers perceived intrigue and the illumination on his face show that the white light of peace is affecting him. He is supposed to be enforcing the law but his conscious is touched by the innocence of the flower girls peaceful gesture. The white light is brightest on her hands holding the flower, which is directly in the center, making it the focal point of the photograph. The focal point seems to be glowing with bright white light. White light is a clear indication of peace and hope. The faces that are in focus are all fixated on the glowing focal point. This light embodies the power that the flower has to represent peace. Her right hand is gently holding the stem of the flower. The flower is leaning in a way that captures the light and emphasizes its significance as the focal point. The left hand is daintily reaching out, which is another indication of peace. The bracelet that the woman is wearing has metal rings, which make it look like she is wearing handcuffs. Additionally, the way in which her hands are pressed together add to the thought of her being handcuffed. The gun placed between her hands could be another interpretation of how the officers identify with the protester by trying to break her restraints. It is not clear whether she is wearing handcuffs or is just wearing a bracelet but it adds to the enthymeme of the photos focal point. If the photo was re-framed to exclude the individuals depicted in the picture and include the hands holding the flower and the gun it may depict more of a conflict between peace and war and not uncover the power of the flower to halt violence. The re-framed image of just the focal point creates the tension between the protesters and the law enforcers. The gun between the delicate hands of the flower woman could be seen as violent and aggressive. As opposed to the original image in which I saw the gun between the hands as liberating. Reframing the photo strips away the humanity of the characters in the image. The humanity of the two in focus soldiers and the flower child are what make this picture a powerful peace of anti war demonstration. By showing the emotion of these three people the photographer was able to capture a moment that is evidence for the ability of the flower power movement to make there voice heard. Additionally the focus of the picture makes it one protester against a countless amount of officers. The line of officers with there bayonet’s faced toward the crowd is broken by a single woman holding a bright purple flower. This fulfills the two main purposes of the flower, a symbol of passive resistance of non-violence and as and emblem to reduce negative energy Today, flower power is most closely associated not with antiwar protests, but with acid-tripping hippies. Soon after the Berkeley Vietnam protest that inspired Ginsberg's flower power non-violence concept, the hippie movement, fueled by psychedelic drug use, mushroomed into a nationwide phenomenon. Although both hippies and non-hippies alike would continue to advocate flower power principles of peaceful demonstrations, the psychedelic lifestyle proved unsustainable. But footage like the photo Marc Riboud took of a seventeen-year-old high school student, Jan Rose Kasmir at the Pentagon demonstration offer visible proof that for a for a few years in the mid-1960s flower power was potent, viable and life-changing.

Calyx and Corolla

...Calyx and Corolla Case Report Introduction Calyx & Corolla was a new entrant into the $8 billion flower industry in the United States in 1991. Through the use of overnight air freight (Fed Ex), information technology, an 800 number, and a catalog, Calyx & Corolla was able to bypass three layers of distribution and provide fresh flowers directly from growers to consumers. As a result of their efficient distribution system, Calyx and Corolla changed the way flowers were distributed to consumers. Strengths and Weaknesses I. Strengths A. Good niche and mission. Calyx and Corolla filled a consumer need. Consumers wanted very fresh and long lasting flowers and the company delivered it. Efficient distribution was the key to flower industry and the company was able to shorten delivery to customers by bypassing the middle distribution layers, and provide much faster deliveries than traditional FTD deliveries. For example, Calyx and Corolla delivered roses from growers to consumers within 1-2 days of purchase order compared with one to two weeks for other FTD retailers and florists. B. Sales growing at a faster rate than cost of goods sold. Projected FY4 and FY5 also had projected sales growing faster than cost of goods sold. See graph for details (Derived from Exhibit 1). ...FLOWER AMONG FLOWERS Flower among flowers, soft bud swooning, that the wind moves to a gentle crooning. Wind of heaven, wind of love, you who gladden all you espy; you who smile And will not sigh, candour and fragrance from above; you who perhaps Came down to earth to bring the lonely solace and mirth, and to be a joy For the heart to capture. They say that into your dawn you bear the immaculate soul A prisoner —bound with the ties of passion and rapture? They say you spread Good everywhere like the spring which fills the air with joy and flowers In April time. They say you brighten the soul that mourns when dark clouds gather, And that without thorns blossom the roses in your clime. If then, like a fairy, You enhance the joy of those on whom you glance with the magic charm God gave to you; oh, spare me an hour of your cheer, a single day of your career, that the breast may savour the bliss it knew! The 48-line verse talks of a romantic love for a girl, which is not surprising because Rizal had a lot of girlfriends. It seemed as if this was a personal poem because of the use of the word “I”. The metaphor of a flower is obviously a girl who is more beautiful than all the girls in her group that’s why it’s entitled Flower among Flowers. She is young like a “soft bud”. And when Rizal used onomatopoeia with the wind “crooning”, he was talking of how the flower makes the things it touches, the wind in particular, sing of love. Personal Narrative Essay

...A hundred dead and dying flowers occupy the shelves in Alma’s garage. Countless sunlit mornings push past her window and beam in hot amber bars against her curling wallpaper. They coax her to the nursery, where she meticulously searches for the most colorful, healthy-looking plants. Petunias, violets, pansies—especially pansies—each blessed with the delightful promise of continual budding, would jerk and twist in their crates in the back of the car, waiting for their debut to new soil. Her son decided her future for her, so the foliage will now sit for a bone-dry day on the shelf; another, another. Cathy makes her tea at six o’clock each morning. She has never been to England and hates her “first generation American” title. She speaks with an English accent acquired from her parents, dead and gone, reads etiquette books from cover to cover, writes on fancy stationery to old acquaintances who seldom return a word. The Flower Fed Buffalo

...The Flower-Fed Buffaloes Explore how either The Flower-Fed Buffaloes (by Vachel Lindsay) or Report to Wordsworth (by Boey Kim Cheng) powerfully conveys feelings about human destruction ? Uses: - Symbols - contrasting visual imagery. - tone In the poem called “The Flower – Fed Buffaloes” written by Vachel Lindsay. The poet uses literally techniques such as visual images, tone and symbols, in order for her to convey a strong image about the human destruction of the natural world. The poet uses visual imagery that opposes one and another, in order for her to create this image of destruction of nature by mankind. At the beginning of the poem, before humans intervened, the countryside was “blooming, tossing” and the “flowers lie low’. These words make nature have an ambiance of calmness, zen, peacefulness and harmony as nature is not disturbed by anything. But this visual image will soon change, as suddenly everything is “swept away by wheat’, meaning that this peacefully countryside is intervened by human activity. This creates an image of nature suddenly being attacked and confronted with mankind and its intentions. The changing of fields into wheat plantation is an example of one of many mankind’s’ intention (this being colonization and industry). The author also uses contracting tone in order for her to convey feelings about human destruction. Like with the visual imagery, the tone of poem is very happy and serene, as nature is free to do whatever it...

Reinventing Eden Response

...“Consciously at times, unconsciously at others, we search for ways to reclaim our loss (of Eden)” (3). Central Park, palm trees planted along the side of the road in Miami, and the garden behind your house all have one thing in common: they were made for the same purpose, to reinvent Eden. You may not realize as you are weeding your garden or strolling through Central Park that you are subconsciously part of a movement to bring back the world to an ideal Eden like state. You can see examples of it anywhere you turn, man using technology to turn ‘wilderness’ into a structured haven in which society can live happily. When Eve ate the apple and she and Adam were forced to live in the untamed world we call home today God told man to dominate over nature. Some people have taken this literally, but some have derived a different meaning from the statement. Many people think that we must firmly control all aspects of nature, plants and animals alike. They believe that all ‘wilderness’ must be stripped away and order must be restored to the land. Others feel that we need an almost sheppard-like approach to nature. As a sheppard watches over, guides, and protects his sheep we must preserve nature and its natural beauty. They believe that nature itself is Eden and we must make ourselves one with nature in order to return to Eden. No matter what the individual believes the end goal is the same, the reinvention of Eden. A specific example of this would be to look at the Bryant University...

Butterfly Garden

...The butterfly site, basically a prairie meadow, should be in an open area with good circulation and receiving more than six hours of sun each day, so probably on the south and east side of the buildings. The plants can be planted spring or early fall. The “recipe” recommended by the NJ Native Plant Society is 1/3-1/2 grasses to ½-2/3 wildflowers. Native grasses are especially good later in the season after the flowers have bloomed. Minimal maintaince is key, since NJIT doesn’t have many resources for this and mowing once a year in the early spring before nesting season should be enough. Adult butterflies require nectar from flowers which are more decorative and can be grown in the front areas of the site. The other plants, including shrubs and small trees can be interspersed into the forested buffer. After initial dense planting of these areas, the intent is to let is grow wild with seed freely spreading. The flowers are: milkweed, asters, thistle, sunflower, goldenrod, mint, buttonbush, cardinal flower, and coneflowers. The shrubs and...
