As Airmen of the United States Air Force and members of an elite group of service members, we are faced with roles. These roles define whom we are in our day to day occupation. Of these roles, we have the opportunity to experience the role of a leader and the role of a follower. I would like to take a moment to discuss a very important role that I feel is one we should all take into consideration, the roll as a follower. I feel that this is a very important subject based on the fact that one cannot fulfill the roll as an effective follower without the guidance of an effective leader. I would like to explain my view point by exploring what makes an effective leader, then following up by stating my view point on how followership relates to professional …show more content…
These tools range from life advice, professional advice and molding the individuals into key members to our successful mission. Most of our followers rely on our experience and knowledge gained to assist them in these endeavors. They are faced with challenging times in their personal lives and professional lives. Our followers often seemed overwhelmed with tasks that the USAF require of them and need a helping hand for their success. As for our followers, we have to take to time to know and understand their challenges. Often this is a tradition that is passed down from those whom have come before us to provide a road map for success. Those whom have spent the many nights studying CDCs, reviewing SKT material and simple job knowledge. The follower is one who looks up to those whom has accomplished success through the challenges. The follower is also one whom looks for advice when time are tough and sees no light at the end of the tunnel. While we understand that these are simply obstacles that occur as members of the armed forces, many followers don’t understand how they will reach these goals and timelines. They must look up to an individuals for advice and leadership. Being that followers must look up to a leader, this opens doors for these individuals to explore options for professional development. These range from how to affectively counsel AMN, to quality of work, and even quantity of work. These issues are that should be faced on a day to basis by a leader. AMN require constant feedback and most often time need this feedback to support their growth. The roll of the follower is one that can be difficult at times in the fact, individuals don’t want to hear the words that they are not meeting expectations. I feel that majority of individuals honestly want to provide the best service to our great Nation that they have to offer. They wake-up day to day, proud to wear their uniform and be defenders of the USA. However, simply having a creased uniform and showing up to work at the required time is not enough! The follower must rely on the individuals whom have accomplished so much before us. The follower is required to request feedback when they feel it is needed! The roll of leadership and follower ship is a two-way street that both parties must take an active role to pursue. In professional development, there is more than simple job knowledge, there is the whole AMN concept. Followers should have the courage to seek out our Senior Leaders for support and advice. Active feedback is a requirement of both the follower and the leader and shouldn’t be viewed as a negative consequence, it’s our job! This brings me to my
