...Eleanor Roosevelt and Leadership The Early Years Anna Eleanor Roosevelt was born on October 11, 1884 in New York City, New York. Although economically comfortable, her family was very distressed. Elliot Roosevelt, her father, was an alcoholic and was frequently troubled with mental depression. Elliot was also away from the home frequently for business, pleasure or medical treatment; Eleanor’s father entered a sanitarium for alcoholics when she was just a child. Her mother, Anna Hall Roosevelt, was very concerned with keeping the family’s high class reputation in society and as years passed she became very disconsolate trying to balance her responsibilities (Encyclopedia of World Biography, 1998). Eleanor recognized the tension and problems in her family at a young age, taking much of the responsibility for her mother’s unhappiness. Eleanor cared so much for her mother, yet she was embarrassed by Eleanor’s homeliness and continually reminded her of her lack of beauty. Her mother even went as far as to give her nicknames, such as “Granny” for being plain and lacking beauty. When Eleanor was eight years old, her mother passed away, starting the theme of death that she would endure throughout her childhood. The Bombing of Pearl Harbor, on December 7, 1941 resulted in President Roosevelt to issue Executive Order 0966 on February 19th 1942, which effected all Japanese ancestry, both citizens and aliens living in America or outside of the Pacific zone. The Executive Order's primary objective were to prevent any espionage and to protect the Japanese people from any harm against Americans who slowly began to become very strong anti-Japanese people who were growing their hate and racial discrimination to the Japanese due to the bombing. With the Executive Order in act, if affected “117,000 people of Japanese descent, two-thirds of whom were native-born citizens of the United States” (as stated through the National Archives.) Evacuation orders were posted in Japanese American communities giving them instructions on what they were to do. This included the Issei who were the first generation Japanese to immigrate to American and also the Nisei who were the second generation Japanese in America. Craig AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL UNIVERSITY ACCOUNTABILITY AND RHETORIC DURING A CRISIS: WALT DISNEY’S 1940 LETTER TO STOCKHOLDERS Abstract: In 1940, Walt Disney was faced with crafting a message of corporate accountability under duress. His company, the product of his creative genius, had been forced to submit to public accountability. It had a pressing need to raise preferred equity finance for a major expansion during a period of market uncertainty, war, and reported losses. This paper conducts a “close reading” of the “Letter to Stockholders” in Walt Disney Productions’ 1940 annual report, the first such letter signed by Walt Disney. The letter’s rhetorical features, including metaphor and ideology, are examined in the context of the times. What is revealed is an accountability document skillfully crafted with the exigencies faced by Disney’s company firmly in mind. The letter offers suggestive insight to the world as Disney made sense of it. The paper contributes to understanding the use of rhetoric by top management in activities related to aspects of financial accountability and reporting.
