...Robert E Lee - Battle of Chancellorsville Introduction The Battle of Chancellorsville took place in April 30 – May 6, 1863, and was part of the American Civil war. This battle is widely recognized in the American history as Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee’s greatest victory during the American Civil War. Following the Union disaster at the Battle of Fredericksburg, Major General Ambrose Burnside was eased and Major General Joseph Hooker “Fighting Joe” stood in his place as Commander of the Army of the Potomac. After the trials of 1862, Hooker took the spring to reorganize and rehabilitate his troops who were encamped on the east bank of the Rappahannock River near Fredericksburg. General Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia was encamped to the west of Fredericksburg and remained in place along the heights they had protected the earlier December. On April 30, 1863, Maj. Gen. Joseph “Fighting Joe” Hooker traversed the Rappahannock River and steered part of his large army onto the open of Gen. Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia. A strong cohort of Hooker’s army menaced the Confederate lines opposite Fredericksburg. Joe Hooker had reorganized and revitalized the Potomac Army over the preceding winter, with the Federal Force also greatly outnumbering the Confederates – approximately 130,000 to 60, 000 (Reid, 2013). Lee carried a union plan where he split his army in two, confronting and surprising Union Gen. Joseph Hooker. Despite Hooker still holding numerical superiority...

...The civil war is one of the most deadly wars in time. The civil war is all about the freedom of slavery. The battle of Fredericksburg is one of the battles inside the war. The battle of Fredericksburg was a tremendous loss because General Burnside lost 50,000 men, the pontoons didn’t arrive in time for the Union to cross the river, and they tried to break through the Confederates defenses. The loss of 50,000 men was a loss for the Union because the battle of Fredericksburg hosted the largest group of soldiers to participate in a battle. “ The enemy deployed in s ravine which was between the Union and the city, a distance of about 300 or 400 yards from the stone wall, and advanced with fresh columns to attack at intervals of not more than fifteen minutes, but they were repulsed with zeal driven back with loss on every occasion. This continued until about 4:30 p.m.” the Union also bombarded Fredericksburg with 150 cannons to make sure that they would win. They made plans to cross the river just incase they would need to fall back and regain some ground. Over 120,000 Union soldiers fought in the battle, which was the highest number of combatants of any battle in the civil war. The Union did this because they wanted to win the land and make it part of the north as a free state....

...over an eleven week period. With the loss of financial stability, it has caused many families to lose the ability to adequately feed their families. As a result of lost income, families are relying more heavily on the resources that food pantries provide. In 2011, approximately 79% of households nationwide that have children had adequate food. That leaves an estimated 21% of households with children who will go hungry. Children that do not receive proper nutrition run a higher risk of health and developmental difficulties (Coleman-Jensen, McFall, & Nord, USDA, 2013). A local area food pantry, The Fredericksburg Area Food Bank in Fredericksburg, VA serves families that have food insecurities. The Fredericksburg Area Food Bank provides food to the counties of Stafford, Spotsylvania, Caroline, King George and the City of Fredericksburg, along with communities in the neighboring area. ...The GM manufacturing plant in Fredericksburg, VA had a long history of over-engineered and inefficient processes. More importantly, the plant had a long and predictable history of failing to meet its operating budget and, as a cost center for GM, demonstrated a significant lack of ability to influence revenue in order to meet its budget. The relatively small size of the plant and its position downstream from other GM manufacturing segments made it prone to “ripple effects” of strikes in other larger plants further up the production stream – most notably the plant in Dayton, OH. A March 1997 strike at the Dayton plant resulted in no customer orders for Fredericksburg. Since timely delivery of components was critical to the overall success of GM’s entire transmission manufacturing operations, the Fredericksburg plant, a strike at another plant like Dayton was a catch-22 for Fredericksburg. No customer orders meant untimely delivery of components to other plants in the production chain thusly rendering a negative effect on overall production and GM’s ability to meet demand. The rural, small town setting of the Fredericksburg plant gave rise to unique issues concerning its workforce. Many of the employees were related and a union leader might find himself working alongside Process Manager Mother-in-law. While there may be some morale benefits to family working together, there are also some sinister downsides. The case study indicates that employees were lax about properly documenting...

...Introduction: The General Motor’s manufacturing plant in Fredericksburg plant is facing some operational changes within the plant that would lead to increased productivity and a decrease in costs in the long-run. Although cost cutting and meeting the budget can be overcome through restructuring (lay-offs), Joe Hinrichs is fully aware that the social costs of restructuring are perhaps too high for the small community in which the plant operates. Reengineering the processes at the plant to meet QS 9000 standards is another level of change occurring in order to produce more efficiently. Hinrichs is trying to regenerate its core strategies in its production process while gaining the support of its parent company, plant employees and the United Auto Workers Union. Structural variables such as goals, culture and environment, technology, and size that influence the operational effectiveness are discussed below. Analysis: One of the key issues at the Fredericksburg plant as mentioned before was meeting budget through reduced labor costs and increased productivity. Reducing labor costs would require Henrichs to stop paying the overtime to the employees, a frequent scenario to which they had become accustomed. But in order to facilitate this change we would need to determine on how to keep his employees motivated to improve production processes while their rewards were decreasing. This could only be accomplished focusing the employees towards the bigger picture; which in this case...

...impressive by comparison, they faced what the union faced in Fredericksburg, and they lost too many men in the fight. All of these things put together made Pickett’s charge famous. The day began with the largest artillery fire in the history of the world up to that point, but the damage they did wasn’t as bad as the attack was. Many southern soldiers aimed their guns too high and shot above them. Also, the shots were off target, some landed in the dirt way up front, some were off to the side, and some exploded in mid air. When General Pickett and his army charged towards hill, they were greeted with severe return fire! In the return fire, Pickets army quickly diminished and the north had no problem defending the hill. In the middle of the field, was a large fence. The confederate soldiers had to climb over the fence to get past it, making them easy targets. Pickett lost over 2,000 of his men. Other generals and commanders lost a several men. All-in-all, the Southern army lost about 5,575 men in Pickett’s Charge, due to death, capture or being wounded. General Armistead of the Army of Northern Virginia didn’t survive. Pickett escaped the battle without a scratch. His career was never the same after this. The Union only lost about 3,450 men. That is about half of what the south suffered. The south got a little sense of déjà vu in a sense that a similar event happened in the battle of Fredericksburg. In the battle of Fredericksburg, the south had the high...

...The first child of Augustine Washington (1694–1743) and his second wife, Mary Ball Washington (1708–1789), George Washington was born on their Pope's Creek Estate near present-day Colonial Beach in Westmoreland County, Virginia. According to the Julian calendar and Annunciation Style of enumerating years, then in use in the British Empire, Washington was born on February 11, 1731; when the Gregorian calendar was implemented in the British Empire in 1752, in accordance with the provisions of the Calendar (New Style) Act 1750, his birth date became February 22, 1732. Washington's ancestors were from Sulgrave, England; his great-grandfather, John Washington, had emigrated to Virginia in 1657. George's father Augustine was a slave-owning tobacco planter who later tried his hand in iron-mining ventures. In George's youth, the Washingtons were moderately prosperous members of the Virginia gentry, of "middling rank" rather than one of the leading planter families. At this time, Virginia and other southern colonies had become a slave society, in which slaveholders formed the ruling class and the economy was based on slave labor. Six of George's siblings reached maturity, including two older half-brothers, Lawrence and Augustine, from his father's first marriage to Jane Butler Washington, and four full siblings, Samuel, Elizabeth (Betty), John Augustine and Charles. Three siblings died before becoming adults: his full sister Mildred died when she was about one, his half-brother Butler...

...Army of the Potomac marched 130,000 strong against a dug-in 60,000 man force commanded by General Lee (Luvaas, 11). During the Chancellorsville campaign, MG Joseph Hooker failed to leverage the mission command warfighting function, which led to one of the greatest Union defeats of the American Civil War. The Union’s objective was to seize the Confederate capitol of Richmond, the Confederate center of gravity. For the last six months, the Union had made multiple attempts to maneuver south, but had been systematically repelled by General Robert E. Lee (Luvaas, 34). In December 1862, General Lee defeated the Union Army at the Battle of Fredericksburg. Though well-supplied, the Union Army was plagued with desertion, low morale, and no confidence in their leader, Major General Ambrose Burnside (Wineman, 23). Following the defeat at Fredericksburg, MG Burnside demanded the removal of many subordinate leaders. He gave President Lincoln an ultimatum: allow him to fire his subordinate commanders or accept his resignation (Luvaas, 34). President Lincoln decided to remove him from command and appointed MG Hooker to commander of the Army of the Potomac. Hooker immediately solved the morale of his Soldiers, creating a formidable obstacle to the Confederate momentum. MG Hooker reorganized the Army by centralizing each corps’ cavalry units into a Cavalry Corps commanded by General J. E. B. Stuart (Wineman, 39). Additionally, he set conditions to leverage the intelligence warfighting...

...Combating and Preventing Delinquency Combating and Preventing Delinquency Juvenile delinquency can exist in any community, regardless of the financial intake of an area. Theories such as the cultural deviance theory have provided some reasoning as to why a teen may become delinquent. In efforts to combat delinquency many communities have implemented alternative education programs and extracurricular activity programs. Alternative programs help teens find the right path to a decent life. Programs such as The YMCA have lowered and prevented delinquency within communities, because they provide positive reinforcement. Juvenile Delinquency Reduction Programs Virginia offers teens alternative education programs. These programs target students who no longer have access to traditional school programs or who are returning from juvenile correctional centers. Stafford County offers the Regional Alternative Education program. The program’s setup is in a more adult environment, where students can work towards a high school diploma or begin GED preparation. Student to teacher ratio is 1 to 10. The program is flexible, has a required dress code and uses behavioral modification. The Regional Alternative Education program offers computer-assisted instruction, hands on assignments, job training, drug prevention education, field trips and counseling. The program also has business and community partnerships (Virginia Department of Education, n.d). The Rappahannock YMCA program offers extracurricular...

...Following the Union catastrophe that was the Battle of Fredericksburg, commanding General Ambrose E. Burnside tendered his resignation as the head of the Army of the Potomac. In his place, President Abraham Lincoln would appoint Union Major General Joseph Hooker (Brothers, 1). At this time MG Hooker was faced with fixing severe organizational problems and boosting moral in a demoralized Army of the Potomac that had suffered loses in previous battles. “The reason for the Army of the Potomac’s lackluster performance extended beyond the unimaginative tactics and strategy of its previous commanding generals it was based on severe organizational problems required correction as well”(Sears,61). As MG Hooker assessed, the organizational problems...
