Free Hugs Campaign
Sometimes all we need is a hug!
Free Hugs Campaign is a social movement initiated by Juan Mann. It involves hugging strangers in public places. It started in Australia but now has been spread all over the world because it really makes people happy. Even new studies of scientist’s show that touch therapy like HUGS can help overcome some medical conditions like Depression and Osteoarthritis. They believe that people need four hugs for survival, eight for maintenance and twelve for proper physical growth in a day. They have also said that it is the best way to support anyone and communicate when words are not enough.
Actually it didn’t start as a psychological experiment but just as a random act of kindness to spread happiness among people and brighten up their lives.
When Juan Mann’s world turned upside down he had no one to support him, to smile at him, to wait for him and to hug him. And that’s how free hugs campaign started on December 1, 2004 in the Phill Street Mall in central Sydney, where he held the cardboard with the words “Free Hugs” written on both sides. For fifteen minutes people were staring at him and passing looks. Then there came a lady who hugged him and said how her dog had died that morning and it was also the first death anniversary of her only daughter who died in a car accident and all she needed at that time, when she was feeling so lonely, was a HUG. And when they parted after a hug, she was smiling. Juan Mann said that he felt like the king of the world and those smiles he got were the best thing that ever happened to him.
Through this we can see how one hug can help two people. The best thing about a hug is that you usually can’t give one without getting one yourself. A silent hug can mean a thousand words to an unhappy heart. A Hug is warm, friendly and so human. Scientist researches have shown that it’s a good medicine not just because it transfers energy but also because it helps in the emotional lift.
I chose this topic because I was really intrigued by, how in this self-obsessed and materialistic world of distant media and technology there was someone, courageous enough to set a mission to spread happiness and joy among the people of his place. I got this feeling that we have not lost humanity yet. Moreover when Australian local authorities banned the campaign then, 10,000 people signed a petition for the continual of this campaign. The hopeful messages they sent said that it’s a nice campaign to spread joy among people in this stressful and monotonous life. It showed me how weak we are psychologically, how much we miss the regular talks and life when internet was not so much dominating our lives. More than that I loved this topic because it gave me the chance to know about the psychological effects people have by hugging. Now whenever I will hug someone I will remember how much both of us helped each other in physical and emotional growth.
Let’s just quickly have the glance at the data’s of depression. 15% of population in developed countries suffers from severe depression. It is also said that depression will be the second largest killer after heart disease by 2020. 9.5% of population aged 18 is affected by depressive disorders.
It's the sense of touch. In any real city, you walk, you know? You brush past people, people bump into you. In L.A., nobody touches you. We're always behind this metal and glass. I think we miss that touch so much, that we crash into each other, just so we can feel something. - From the movie “Crash”
Depression is in rise because touch is in the drop and we can see this in the above mentioned statement. Because of the advancement in technology and hustle bustle in life, we don’t have time to meet people and share emotions. People use Skype and video chats instead of live meetings and chitchats. Moreover the increasing issues about the sexual harassment and inappropriate touch are playing an important role in the fewer physical contacts than before. Hug is a sign of caring but now people prefer handshakes. As a result, many of us starve for the simple, casual, warm touch from our loved ones be it family, friends or any colleague.
Because of these things, there is a development in the new field called Psychoneuroimmunology (PNI). It claims that people’s immune system gets stronger and better when they are feeling good, loved or touched. Touching actually helps in libidinal refueling. When we hug someone we literally recharge our and theirs libido, the powerful energy of our body. Touch therapies slow-down the actions in the hypothalamic area of the brain, which controls our response for “Fight or Flight”. During this our stress hormones drop and endorphins climb which helps in the decrement of pain and increment in feeling of well-being. And if touch is actually from that person whom we love and care like our friend, partner or any loved ones, then there will be added benefit of heightened sense of love and security. Moreover many studies have shown that hugs helps to fight insomnia, eases tension, slows down aging and builds self esteem.
Majella Greene, a former social worker and positive psychologists has also said that the children who get the physical contacts and warmth from their parents will feel more and more protective towards others than those who were given the materialistic facilities of computers and TVs. She has also said that free hugs campaign being success itself portrays the psychology of people that how they were isolated and how it helped them to bridge the gap between each other. Even psychologist James W Prescott in 60s and 70s said that those infant having less contact with their mother are prone to the abnormalities like depression, eating disorders and violence. No wonder the rate of depression among children is 23%.

So basically a free hugs campaign is just a topic I used in order to show the psychological facts and figures in an interesting way. We are losing human touch and this has many psychological effects. 15% of the people commit suicide because of depression. Many a time people think we can create difference by doing something big, but actually we can do something small and create a big difference. That’s what free hugs campaign was all about.

Serial hugger Juan Mann describes the free hugs he hands out...as fast-food emotion. His cuddling campaign received an international dose of publicity today, after a clip showing his public displays of affection won a coveted front page spot on the video sharing website. An American television audience of millions also watched him at work, when the video was broadcast on the prime-time breakfast program Good Morning America yesterday. Today, the hugger was at it again, brandishing his "free hugs" sign in the busy pedestrian thoroughfare, and having quite a few people take him up on his offer. "It's a way to make people smile," Mann said. "For every person who gets a hug, you see five walk past with a smile on their face." But his efforts to spread the love became a little too popular for some people's liking, according to a blurb on the YouTube video, which said: "As this symbol of human hope spread across the city, police and officials ordered the Free Hugs campaign BANNED." Undeterred, Mann collected more than 10,000 signatures on a petition he presented to the City of Sydney council. Demands for a halt to the hugs petered out shortly after, and the end of the clip shows Mann hugging an official. City worker Elly Mitchell, who handed out a few free hugs on her lunch...

...and triumphs during a new era of equality, the Phillip Morris Company launched one of the most successful cigarette campaigns in history geared towards the feminist movement that spanned over a 30 year period. This ingenious campaign not managed to interpret feminism into something to sell, but it paved the way for inverted feminine ideology while female consumer simultaneously became enslaved by the very tobacco company that sought to empower them. As the proportion of female smokers soared to 33%, tobacco companies began to see them as means to increase sales. One such company was the Phillip Morris Company. Riding high on a successful campaign strategy that catapulted Marlboro sales to the top, the company sought out the very advertising agency that had engineered that campaign, the Leo Burnett Agency, to conceptualize and market its women’s specific cigarette. The agency drew its inspiration based on the name Virginia (a previous acquisition of Phillip Morris known as Virginia Rounds), and the rising trend of smokers noted moving toward a longer cigarette it had in its arsenal, Silva Thins. Provided with the name, Virginia Slims, Burnett began to work his magic. The most unique part of the process had to be the means in which it was originally marketed. Far before the development of the product ever went to market, Burnett marketed his concept and campaign to the gender specific segment first. P1 Introduction to Marketing

...In this task, I am going to be describing and comparing how marketing techniques are used to market products in two organisations. The first organisation I will be talking about is Apple, and the second being Coca Cola. Marketing means that a business will identify the needs of the consumer and produce products that meet the requirements of them. In order for a business to perform and succeed, it needs to make sure that their customers are at the heart of operations. Should businesses do this, it would mean that they are market-orientated. As well as this, there are other forms of orientation for business. These include; * The production concept * The sales concept When a business uses a marketing concept, and putting customers at the heart of decisions. By doing this, a business operates more efficiently by prioritising investments on product development for the customers. Objectives In order for a business to grow and succeed, it is essential that it has its objectives outlined. The first aim a business will have when it starts out, is to survive. Once this goal has been achieved, it means that they can now focus on growth objectives, which means that they can focus on increasing market share and increasing profits. When businesses set objectives, they follow SMART guidelines. SMART stands for; * Specific – The objective must be clear and concise * Measureable – Objectives must be able to assess properly * Achievable – The objective needs to be reasonable...

Islam

...Islamic Culture My first encounter with the Islamic faith was a result of the 9-11 tragedies. While I like to think that I think for myself, I must admit to being a sheep during that time. I did not know anything about Muslims or their faith. I also confess to believing that is was only practiced in the Middle East. The Central Asian Arabian desert saw birth to the Islamic religion around 600 AD. The religion started with the teachings of Prophet Muhammad who is considered to be the messenger of the one and only, formless, all-powerful God, Allah. Islam spread rapidly from the Arabian Peninsula in less than 30 years and managed to defeat the Persian and Roman Empires. Over the next several centuries, Islam reached as far east as India and westward to Spain. Through traveling traders, Islam spread to Southeast Asia; where today Indonesia is the largest Muslim country. Today, Islam is considered to be the fastest growing religion in the world. According to ncccusa.org, “there are about 1.2 billion Muslims and about 2 billion Christians in the world. By 2025, it is expected that Islam will grow by 50%, and Christianity will grow by 31%. Indonesia has the greatest number of Muslims with over 170 million adherents. Pakistan is next with 136 million”. If one follows the Islamic faith, women and men are equal in rights and life. They are not seen as equal in physical attributes therefore it is the man’s duty to be the physical laborer and be the main financial supporter of the...

Sustainability Motto of Coca Cola

...Coca Cola Report Introduction Coca- Cola is one of the very well known brands operating in FMCG sector. The drink which has quenched the thirst of so many people around the globe was invented by John Pemberton a pharmacist by profession and most commonly called as “Doc”. He was assisted by Frank Robinson in the marketing of the product. The company was totally in mess until Asa Griggs Candler took over the business in 1891. Secret of Coca Cola’s success is the innovative marketing strategies of Grigg which laid the foundation for the success the company is enjoying today. Initially the drink was sold as a medicine for the treatment of fatigue and headaches. Later, with the imposition of tax in 1898 on all medicines, Grigg categorized it into beverage sector after a prolonged court battle. Ever since then, Coca-Cola is operating as one of the well known brands in beverage industry. In 1919 Candler was chosen as mayor of Atlanta which made him excessively busy because of this he decided to sale out the ownership of the company and Ernest Woodruff became the new owner in September 12, 1919. He changed the formula of the drink and labeled it as New Coke. Unfortunately, the drink was rejected by the consumers and with no option left Woodruff had to introduce the old Classic Coke back for meeting customer demands. According to Business Insiders Coca Cola is a brand with which 94% of the world’s population is familiar. The company has marked its presence in more than 200 countries...
