Genre Awareness Project Assignment
Important Dates:

TH 1/29:Genre Awareness Project Full First Draft due via email to [Instructor] before class, and bring one clean, typed and stapled copy of your complete project to class for peer review/reading workshop.

T 2/3: Genre Awareness Project Pencil Grade due at the beginning of class. This should be a clean, typed and stapled copy of your complete project.

T 4/14: Final Portfolio due. Of the first three major writing projects, you must revise at least one but you may choose up to two to revise for a new grade (i.e., the new grade will “erase” the previous pencil grade). Barring any late or other penalties, you have the chance to improve the grade on this project, if you choose to revise it for the portfolio.

The Assignment and Rationale:

For this project, you are required to find three legitimate, same-genre movie posters from the last decade and write a report revealing your genre awareness findings and conclusions about both the stability and flexibility of the movie genre represented in these three posters. You may choose the movie genre, and you may find that you’re working with a multi-hyphenated genre (e.g., thriller-crime-drama). This is fine, as long as you can find three movie posters that represent this particular genre. However, I advise you to not go too obscure in your choices, as this might limit or make difficult your selection, and I also request you stay away from choosing posters for movies already clearly linked (e.g., sequels, trilogies). I encourage you to consider the country of origin for the movies and posters, as this will alter/change the content of the poster. For the sake of uniformity, please use the U.S./English version of a movie poster. The movie poster functions as a shorthand version of all that the movie is trying to represent or present. As such, the posters have to do a lot of quick work to get the appropriate message across to viewers. Because of this, no element of design is accidental or arbitrary. All genres carry with them a series of expectations, key features or elements, and relatively stable boundaries around form and design. However, this does not mean that genres are totally rigid or static. Your job, as a cultural investigator of this particular pop culture genre (i.e., movie posters), is to present your findings to your readers in the genre of a report. While your assignment will be particular to our class and to the goals/requirements outlined here, we will use the information in Writing Today, Chapter 12, as our general guide. This assignment allows you to develop critical reading awareness of a specific pop culture genre, as well as reveal this awareness in the particular genre of a report. In short, you are building genre awareness through both critical reading of a specific genre and compiling and delivering your findings by writing in the style of a specific genre.

Developing and Designing The Report:

While I imagine your report will be around ~5-6 pages of prose (writing), plus additional material (a Works Cited page and Appendix), worry less about the actual length of the report and focus more on making sure you are providing your readers with all the required information usually present in a report. In so doing, you will find that your work will develop to an appropriate length. Format your essay in MLA style. Again, we’ll use the information presented in Writing Today, Chapter 12, as our guide. Look, especially, at the “At-A-Glance” information on page 266. Your report will include:

Abstract: Though this section comes first, you will write this last, as the abstract is a tidy, direct summary of the entire report that follows. Introduction: This section will introduce your topic/focus to your readers. While the entire class will work on the same general topic/focus of genre awareness and movie posters, your specific chosen movie genre will be unique to your report here. Here is where you’ll introduce for your readers the expectations of this particular movie genre and the attendant expectations in the movie posters. Here is also where you will express your statement of purpose/main point/hypothesis. Methods: This section will reveal your research methods. Actively describing for your readers how you came to find your information is crucial to a report. In order to meet the assignment guidelines (i.e., three legitimate same-genre movie posters from the last decade), you will need to reveal your basic searches and sites/sources used to locate and authenticate your findings. The three movie posters are “primary sources,” and I do not require you to find or use any more source material than the posters themselves. Results: In this section, you will objectively (i.e., without judgment or criticism) describe the actual movie posters themselves. You will have much to detail here, as no choice in the poster design is accidental or arbitrary. Describe the posters as if your readers cannot see them; this will make you responsible for the depth and detail required in such descriptions. While you may refer briefly to plot or character detail, the goal of the results section and this project is to focus your attention on the images, language, fonts, etc., of the actual poster that is attempting to capture what the viewer will—apparently—see in the actual film’s content. Discussion: In this section, you will analyze the results outlined in the previous section. Here is where you will build a more critical awareness of the genre’s features and readers‘ expectations, and reveal the answers/observations that help “test” your hypothesis. Looking at the details presented in the results section should reveal to you some level of observant comment or critique, and this is the section in which you can be more actively critical or analytical of the results. Conclusion: The conclusion section reiterates key facts and findings from the entire report, ideally leaving readers with some thoughtful impact or lasting insight. End Material: You will create a Works Cited page listing your three movie posters, plus you should include the three posters themselves as visual aids/images in an appendix to the report.

The Rhetorical Situation/The Five Factors:

As a critical reader of genres, you need to consider the rhetorical situation/the five factors that inform the intention of the text/document. Equally, then, as a writer of genres, you need to pay close attention to these same considerations in order to communicate effectively. For this report, use these five factors as your guide:

Genre: Report on genre awareness. Purpose: To inform readers on genre awareness through basic research, genre expectations, analysis/critique of findings, and thoughtful conclusions. Audience: Your college peers. These are people who most likely know movie genres rather well, but have less occasion or cause to thoroughly investigate their own genre awareness through this kind of research, level of detailed observation, and presentation of insights. Style/Voice: Writing Today, Chapter 12 and 16, details something called “plain style,” which is a combination of both first-person prose and a more objective, straightforward delivery of content. Social Context: Your audience and topic exists in the “right now,” the current moment, and both audience and topic exist in an academic setting specific to NDSU and the college classroom. As such, you’re writing a public document presented within this academic classroom.
Important Note:

The goal of this report is to reveal your specific genre awareness of movies and movie posters, not explore, evaluate, or praise/censure the effectiveness of the marketing or economic situation attached to the movies or to these posters as money-making devices. Of course, the entire movie industry is based on profits and attracting consumers, but note well that this report is about revealing your genre awareness of the expectations and features in the design and thematic content present in the posters themselves.

Genre Awareness Report

...Genre Awareness Report Forrest Leitch Abstract In order to better understand how genres are interpreted, I chose three movie posters from the same genre to analyze. I observed the posters for similarities that lend themselves to characteristics of the genre. Multiple aspects of the poster were taken into consideration, such as title font, images, layout, and coloring. I concluded that all three posters shared similar characteristics, through which the genre of their movie can be deduced. Introduction In the world of cinema, genres are very important. Audience, film content, and style are just a few determining factors in which genre a movie fits into. Movie posters are a quick way to convey the genre to consumers without having to actually see the movie. Not all movies fit perfectly into just one genre, however, and genres don’t have rigid structures that the movies within them must comply with. Children’s-Adventure movies, for example, are usually animated films that have a plot based on some type of journey or adventure that is taken on by the main characters (Dirks, 1). There is almost always some great obstacle or challenge that the main character(s) must overcome, and usually good trumps evil. These films generally contain light humor, and teach some sort of life-lesson, or have a recurrent morale to the story. Methodology I analyzed three movie posters from the Children’s-Adventure genre to explore the similarities and differences movie posters from the same...

Genre Awareness Report

...Tanner Otto Professor Lee Gullickson English 120 13 September 2013 Genre Awareness Abstract To find out what characteristics define an action movie and whether or not they hold true for all action movies, I decided to do some research using the internet. After looking at multiple movie posters I noted the similar characteristics between them all. When confronted with the similarities I further analyzed the posters and tried to determine what the reasoning behind the similarities was. Finally, I deciphered the reason behind them and made a decision on whether or not certain characteristics are present in all action movies. Introduction Action movies have been around since movies were first created. The visual effects and the actors have changed, but the feel is the same. When describing an action movie the average person thinks of guns, cars, explosions, violence and big action-star names such as Jason Statham. These are stereotypes of the action movie genre. These same stereotypical aspects, among others, are showcased in the posters. My aim for this report is to look at different movie posters of the same genre and look for common themes and elements between them and decipher the meanings and purpose. Methodology To find examples of movie posters I began my research by using google to search for images of known action movies. The first search was for the Expendables 2 poster. When looking at the results I saw that one poster was more frequent than the others and...

...reading research. Respectful of the cross-age approach that Pressley took in the last volume (account for progress of beginning readers, adolescent and adult readers— and along the way highlight some pedagogical processes that are salient at all levels, such as word recognition, vocabulary, and comprehension), we took a different approach. We decided to focus on reading as a fundamentally cognitive process that can be influenced by contextual forces at many levels, most notably for education, schools, and policy environments. Thus we deal with the fundamental psychological aspects of reading—word level processes (including subword processes such as phonological awareness and decoding, word reading, and vocabulary, with all of its entailments), and text-level processes as they are grounded in structures, genres, and disciplinary knowledge pursuits. After the account of these cognitive processes, we turn to a setting-level analysis, in which we examine word- and text level processes within schooling (including instruction in English language arts and the subject matters of history and science) and policy contexts. As we unpack each...

Post Production Report Media Wjec/as

...Post Production report My story board for the opening sequence would have been easy to create a moving image from as it gave clear to illustration of what I wanted the sequence to look like. I also noted a range of transitions and camera movements to make it clear how I wanted each shot to look, what I wanted the sequence to be paced etc. The music choice of ‘Hans Zimmer – Dream is collapsing’ was good as it was more upbeat than the classical song used in the first two shots and created suspense. I chose to subvert Todorov’s narrative structure which most of the films I analysed followed and started at a point that was not equilibrium as the main character was in danger from the start and ended up seriously injured. The image I used from my posters were inspired by my storyboard. The image used on my teaser poster is inspired by the second shot of my storyboard as a sense of mystery is created as you can only see a small amount of the persons face. I changed the shot into a mid shot for my cover poster as you can clearly see the convention of ‘Business wear’ used in spy films. Doing this made the genre of the film more recognisable even though there was not much information on the teaser poster. I super imposed the image onto a white background to make the whole image brighter and I used high key lighting on the image to make image more eye catching. I lastly covered my background image in a filter which gives the image a similar effect to something that has been pixilated...

Susang G Komen Foundation: Where Does the Money Really Go?

...Miranda Razzis Dr. Oleksiak English 101- Foundations of Writing 22 November 2015 Composition in Three Genres Breast Cancer is becoming more and more well-known and almost anyone you ask can say they know or are related to someone who has or had Breast Cancer. This is a problem because Breast Cancer, to me, seems like the most talked about type of cancer at this time. I think that more people should be aware of the causes of Breast Cancer and also about where their money goes when they donate to the Susan G. Komen Foundation, the largest funder of Breast Cancer research. People should be more educated about these two things because there is so many people affected by Breast Cancer. I want my audience to learn about what the Susan G. Komen Foundation is really doing with the money they are donating to the Foundation. To do this, I created three genres of composition. These genres include a photo essay, a brochure, and a poster. I hope to reach my audience in a different way with these compositions than I did with my essay. For my three genres I chose to compose a photo essay, a brochure, and a poster. These are all unique and can reach my audience and have them understand what I am trying to have them understand. Between all of the compositions, I included photos of women who have had mastectomies, pink ribbons, and the Susan G. Komen Foundation logo. I included the mastectomy pictures because I think it is really important for people to see what Breast Cancer physically...

Genre Awareness

...In this paper I will be talking about three different movie posters of the American War genre. First I will describe where I found the movie posters, and then I will state the results of the visual elements. Then I will analyze, and critique the results of the findings. Introduction When someone walks along the hallway of a movie theater, they will see a series of movie posters which are there to advertise the movie. Humans are known to act on their first impression, and this is important in advertising because it will either attract or defer a potential viewer. Most people have a favorite movie genre, so they’re more inclined to watch a movie that appears to fit under their genre. Through the movie posters a patriotic theme is given off, which will invite in the intended audience. American War movies have very similar posters, although they will have different stories. Today I will be talking about three different movie posters of the American war genre: “American Sniper” (See Fig.1), “Fury” (See Fig.2), and “Lone Survivor” (See Fig. 3). The main purpose of this report is to find and analyze the visuals of the three movie posters. Methodology In order to try and test my hypothesis, I will need to find material that will allow me to gather the appropriate information. I am going to use the internet to find three movie posters of the same genre, and that genre is American war movies. First I will search on google images for American War Movies. In...

The case explains the challenges and opportunities of doing business in Eastern Europe, primarily focusing on Poland, and the marketing mix elements necessary for success. With romance fiction novels as its main product and women as the target market, Harlequin Enterprises was a pioneer in mass market paperback novel series and using consumer goods marketing technique as well as branding in book industry. It focused on series and brand rather than bestsellers and authors. Starting as a small Canadian printing house, it expanded internationally by acquiring a British publisher and then one after another competitors, publishers and distributors all over the world. ...◆The fact that you have this book in your hands means you may already believe that informational text should be included in primary classrooms. Perhaps you have had professional or personal experiences that have led you to that belief. Perhaps you have thought of some potential benefits informational text may hold for young learners. We hope this chapter helps bring together much of what you have been thinking. It is designed to extend your thinking and provide access to research and theories that support it. What’s the Difference Between Informational Text and Nonfiction? Often the terms “informational text” and “nonfiction” are used interchangeably. In our view, however, they are not the same. Informational text is a type of nonfiction—a very important type. Nonfiction includes any text that is factual. (Or, by some definitions, any type of literature that is factual, which would exclude texts such as menus and street signs.) Informational text differs from other types of nonfiction in purpose, features, and format. Purpose The primary purpose of informational text is to convey information about the natural or social world, typically from someone presumed to know that information to someone presumed not to, with particular linguistic features such as headings and technical vocabulary to help accomplish that purpose. By our definition, therefore, biography is nonfiction but is not informational text, because its primary purpose is to convey information about...

Dance-Related Injury

...a performance. With any athletic activity, injuries are almost always inevitable (Lee, 2017). Dance is no exception. Both professional and casual dance are very demanding in their own way. In the pursuit of perfection, dancers push themselves through pain and exhaustion in order to achieve a goal (Cardinal, 2009). Though there are many techniques in order to prevent them, it is often rare for a dancer to not experience a recovery time in their career. The risk factors for certain injuries are not fully understood, even to this day (Russell, 2013). Dance can be broken down into an enormous list of different styles. One can concentrate on the art of ballet to the technical moves of the contemporary genre. Though some would rather give their full attention to one specific genre, others like to dabble or even become a professional in a variety to be diverse. No matter what a performer chooses to focus on, they all have injuries that occur (Gelbard, 1993). While there is not an overload of information on this topic, it is still very thought provoking. This is true, especially when there is still not a clear-cut answer to this long-asked question. The purpose of this study is to discover the causes of these dance-related injuries, even though there are many precautions created to prevent them. The participants are 20 experienced dancers from a few different settings. Two of the dancers have never experienced a dance-related injury. Their results and input will be measured against...
