...Ziyu Cui Research Paper Professor Richard Fahey 12/10 2014 Dead City To Be Brought Back to Life In Ordos, Inner Mongolia in China, Kangbashi district is filled with skyscrapers, government buildings, museums and theatres. Kangbashi looks just like another rising urban center of prosperity, except that there is hardly anyone living there even though it was originally designed to house and entertain one million people. It has been infamous for being the largest ‘ghost city’ in China and unfortunately, it is not the only one. China’s economy has been growing rapidly over the past decades and so is realty business, but problems follow. As a result of a real estate bubble, ‘ghost cities’ sprang up all over the country. The media portrays the deserted plazas and dead stillness in daytime as the excessive Chinese infrastructure investment, and although the media shows cause great concerns, the Chinese government rarely has open discussions on this problem. In my point of view, ‘Ghost Cities’ in China is an important issue since it affects the urbanization, utilization of resources, lives of Chinese citizens and ultimately the development of the entire country. In this paper, I will use Ordos as a typical case study in order to look into some of the contributing factors to this issue such as politics, the economy, social structure and traditional culture, and I will present further thoughts in a broader context. First, I will try to answer the following questions: What are...

...ability to sit with Mr. Knott’s and ask him a few question, I believe I would ask him, what was the reasoning behind the concept of a “hybrid boysenberry? How did it come to the agreement of using Rudolph Boysen and him creating the Berry? And why did you want to set up a theme park? Walter Marvin Knott was a farmer who open Knott's Berry Farm amusement park in California and made jelly. He grew up in Pomona, California. The Knott family sold berries, preserves and pies from a Buena Park out by a roadside stand In 1934. Knott's wife Cordelia began serving fried chicken dinners and to entertain the crowds, Walter built a Ghost Town in 40’s, using buildings relocated from Old West towns. The Knott family fenced the farm and charged admission and it became an amusement park. Knott bought and rebuild a real silver mine in a ghost town in Calico, I tend to research the life of his family and the relationship he had with Rudolph Boysen and when he thought about adding a roller...

...and is one of the founders of Modernism in the theatre. Ibsen is often ranked as one of the truly great playwrights in the European tradition. He has been widely regarded as the most important playwright since Shakespeare. His plays are the most frequently performed in the world after Shakespeare. Although most of his plays are set in Norway—often in places reminiscent of Skien, the port town where he grew up—Ibsen lived for 27 years in Italy and Germany, and rarely visited Norway during his most productive years. The translated title of Ghosts is actually misleading compared to the Danish and Norwegian titles. The correct translation would have been Revenants. When Ibsen finished Ghosts in October 1881 he created a “scandal greater than that created by any other book in the history of Norwegian literature” (Beyer). Thirteen years later Ghosts was produced as a play in the United States. Henrik Ibsen is well known for his scandalous plays but what many people do not see are his deep, woven, hidden messages. Ibsen used many different rhetorical devices to his advantage while he wrote Ghosts but it is clearly evident he uses symbols to convey all his messages. The round table in the living room becomes a field of slaughter littered with evidence of all the battles in the play. It holds the books that symbolize Mrs. Alving’s new ideas, the orphanage papers that represent the enormous lie of Captain Alving, and the champagne that Oswald requests (the one symbol of joy in his...

...Sean Lennon, son of the late John Lennon, recently wrote an article for The New York Times concerning a town meeting that took place in the local high school of Delaware County, New York state. The meeting was held to discuss infrastructure that a gas company wants to put in place ready for hydraulic fracturing. The gas company held the meeting to discuss the benefits to the local residents by bringing clean energy, in the form of natural gas, to millions. In the article Sean shows subjectivity by exhibiting that he has strong feelings of sentiment about the land right from the start by the title he chose for his article, “Destroying Precious Land for Gas.” He says the land is “precious.” Precious means something that is of great value, and something that should not be treated carelessly. In describing the land in this way Sean is saying that the land holds great value for him. He continues by saying, “Where the Catskill Mountains curl up into little kitten hills” (Lennon, 2012). The description of the mountains as “kittens” brings to mind warm, fluffy, purring little kittens. This emphasizes further that Sean’s feelings for the land are warm and loving. He also connects memories of his late father to his family farm, “… skipping stones with my father and drinking unpasteurized milk” (Lennon, 2012). Research shows that John Lennon died when Sean was five years old; therefore, he would not have many memories to hold on to, so one can assume that those he has would be special...

...Reflection Paper #2 Introduction On this reflection paper, the topics I choose were the “Baptism of the Holy Spirit” and the “Rapture”. I choose these topics because they both bring topics of debate with them. There are many different views on these two topics and I will try to shed some light on them. Through Biblical research and theological definitions, we will try to discover the purpose and meanings of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit and the Rapture. The first topic of discussion is the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. This topic stirs up much debate in the denominational realms of the church. There are many different views and standpoints on this topic. John 1:33 states that when John the Baptist, after witnessing the descent of the Holy Spirit as a dove at the baptism of Jesus, recorded these words: “He that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizes with the Holy Ghost”. Later Jesus promised His disciples, “Ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence” (Acts 1:5). On the day of Pentecost, the disciples had a number of experiences involving the Holy Spirit, including the baptism of the Holy Spirit. The disciples spoke in tongues to address the gospel of Christ to many different nations in attendance of Pentecost. This event was the start of the church and its spread of the gospel of Christ to all nations. Many Christians today have confused...

Therefore, this essay will apply standard consumer theory to the housing market and clarify the differences of the decision-making process in purchasing a residential dwelling between standard consumer choice theory and behavioral economics. Moreover, the specific characteristics of speculative bubbles in the real estate market in Spain before and during 2008-2012 will be examined. Part 1: Applications of Traditional vs. Behavioral Economics Explanations Consumer choice is about maximizing their satisfaction by using the limited incomes to fulfill their preference (Silberberg and Suen 2001, 252). There are few general assumptions about consumer’s preferences. Firstly, consumer can rank and compare their choices according to their preference. For example, they can decide to prefer residential dwelling to holiday activity, holiday activity to residential dwelling or indifferent between both choices. This is the assumption called completeness (Isaac 1998, 9). Secondly, preferences are transitive. It means that if a consumer prefers residential dwelling to holiday activity and holiday activity to car, then the consumer also prefers...

But all religious believe came into one point that-There is something, some says it can be the spirits. So,here I gave some information about the unsolved matters………. Ghosts of the Stanley Hotel If you where staying at the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado and turned to channel 42 of your guest-room television, you would be watching one of my all-time favorite movies: The Shining. Doesn’t matter what time of day or night, or year for that matter, it is always on. That’s not supernatural, of course- merely a nod to their role as the inspiration for Stephen King’s novel. Employees report hearing the commotion of a great party in the grand ballroom when there is no one there. Children can be heard playing in the halls when there are no children at all, and many guests have reported seeing ghostly figures in their rooms at night, merely standing, watching. The fourth floor seems to be host to the most amount of activity, and there is one ghost in particular, purportedly Lord Dunraven, the previous owner of the land the property was built on, who can be seen standing over the bed or looking out the window of room 407. He is widely blamed for any jewelry or valuables that have gone missing in the hotel over the years...

The state nick name is the Beaver State because of all of the beavers there. Oregon is a cool name, but what’s even cooler is its postal abbreviation OR. It is simple to remember because it is the first two letters in the states name, unlike AZ which is the first and last letter of the alphabet. History Oregon’s history is amazing, I have so many things to tell you but unfortunately I can only tell you a few. Oregon’s history has so many cool things, I have learned a lot by doing this research paper. Oregon Territory was created in 1848 and became the 33rd state on February 14, 1859. Did you know that Oregon has more ghost towns than any other state? Eugene was the first street to have a one way street. Did you know that the Oregon state flag has two different pictures on each side and is the only one in the United States? Milk was selected as the states beverage in 1997. The state mushroom is the Pacific Golden Chanter for its color. Oregon’s official state dance is the square dance....

...others which share the same elements, components or ideology. With the help of genre people can easily put a label and identify the kind of product they need. The genre that I have chosen to carry out my research on is ‘Horror’. The reason behind my selection being that I find movies and programs that come under this genre quite interesting than those of other genres. These texts hold suspense, thrill and curiosity in the mind of the viewers that makes it different. These movies are mostly based on stories from the past which help captivate the viewers. Though it is presented in a terrifying way; it still manages to entertain the viewers with its element of mystery, fantasy and curiosity that it creates. Horror films go back as far as the onset of films themselves, over a 100 years ago. From our earliest days, we use our vivid imaginations to see ghosts in shadowy shapes, to be emotionally connected to the unknown and to fear things that are improbable. The earliest horror films were Gothic in style i.e. the meaning that they were usually set in spooky old mansions, castles, or fog-shrouded, dark and shadowy locales. Their main characters have included "unknown," human, supernatural or grotesque creatures, ranging from vampires, demented madmen, devils, unfriendly ghosts, monsters, mad scientists etc. Horror film today also carry almost the same characters that haunt the innocent. Taking example from recent film such as Drag me to Hell, Paranormal Activity 2 and The Woman...

Those are beautiful stories, but Nitu knows, all these are made up. Nitu does not like made up stories. She wants to hear real stories. Nitu loves to hear stories, but she gives her condition, it must be true story. Today, Nitu’s uncle, Zahedur Rahman has started a ghost story. He has a bowl of puffed rice in front. Tea in a large cup. He is taking puffed rice and giving sip to the tea. Nitu is lying in front of him. She is holding her head on two hands and looking sharply at his uncle, is he telling a true story or a made up one. She will not listen to made up stories. She is not very old. She is in class three. But she is very intelligent. She can easily find truth and false in stories. The other day their house maid was telling her a story- ‘Once there lived a tiger. He was fatigued at the chill of January. ‘He went to a cloth shop and said, dear bro, give me a warm shawl, I’m suffering in the chill...’ Nitu rebuked the housemaid. She said firmly, ‘Haven’t I told you not to say made up stories? It’s a made up story.’ The maid said, ‘Which part is made up?’ ‘Can a tiger talk? Can it go out shopping?’ ‘What you say...

The show takes place in Mystic Falls, a small town with many secrets including witches, vampires, werewolves, ghosts, and hybrids. It is a constant struggle for Elena to keep her family and friends alive with all of the violence vampires and werewolves bring to the town; along with the struggle to protect her family and friends Elena struggles to choose which Salvatore brother she wants to be with. The trending vampire craze is a big part of America’s culture today. From television to books to movies the once evil vampire is now a fantasy for most women. These vampire characters may be murderers, they may be deceitful, but through all of the blood and gore we still desire them. What does it say about our culture today that the ideal man for a woman is a violent, murderous, yet gorgeous vampire? As a form of popular art, the CW series The Vampire Diaries reflects American women’s interest in violence, blood, heroes, confused morals, attractive men, and a dramatic love triangle. We root for these characters even though they have killed innocent people; each villain reveals a sensitive side that we are forced to sympathize with. American women viewers want to see more than two guys fighting over a girl, they want to see two heroic yet villainous animals struggle...

...The Chernobyl Disaster Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow Written by: Heather Stover ENG135 October 2012 Professor Spencer Robinson Twenty-six years ago in April of 1986 the city of Chernobyl, located in north-central Ukraine on the Pripyat River, was virtually unknown. It was just an obscure city that you and I would never have known existed. Almost incidentally, the name of this city was attached to the V.I. Lenin Nuclear Power Plant located about twenty-five kilometers upstream from the city of Chernobyl. On April 26, the city's anonymity vanished forever when, during a test at 1:21 A.M., the No. 4 reactor exploded and released thirty to forty times the radioactivity of the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. This was due to the flawed reactor design in use at the plant. The world first learned of history's worst nuclear accident from Sweden, where abnormal radiation levels were registered at one of its nuclear facilities. (Adams, 1996) Ranking as one of the greatest industrial accidents of all time, the Chernobyl' disaster and its impact on the course of events for the Soviets can hardly be exaggerated. No one can predict what will finally be the exact number of human victims. Thirty- one lives were lost immediately, although it was initially reported as only two and the others were to have died from acute radiation poisoning. Hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians, Russians, and Belorussians had to abandon entire cities and...
