...CHAPTER 2 In this chapter, you will learn: • About the various operating systems and the differences between them • About the components of Windows operating systems • How operating systems interface with users, files and folders, applications, and hardware Introducing Operating Systems I n Chapter 1, you were introduced to the different hardware devices. In this chapter, you’ll learn about the different operating systems, how they are designed and work, and what they do. You’ll learn about the different components of an OS and see how an OS provides the interface that users and applications need to command and use hardware devices. You’ll learn to use several Windows tools and utilities that are useful to examine a system, change desktop settings, and view and manage some hardware devices. As you work through this chapter, you’ll learn that computer systems contain both hardware and software and that it’s important for you as a computer technician to understand how they work together. Although the physical hardware is the visible part of a computer system, the software is the intelligence of the system that makes it possible for hardware components to work. 35 9781133726890, A+ Guide to Managing and Maintaining Your PC, Jean Andrews - © Cengage Learning. ...with the child's/children's other parents. The definition of single parenthood may vary according to local laws of nations or provinces. Single parenthood may occur as a result of loss (death of spouse, separation, divorce, abandonment by one parent), or by choice (single parent adoption, donor insemination, egg donor/surrogate motherhood, choosing to carry to term an unexpected pregnancy and raise the child on one's own). More than 25% of children in the U.S. live with only one parent (U.S. Bureau of Census, 1997). Research about the welfare of children in single-parent families varies. Many factors influence the outcome of how children fare: parent's age, education level, and occupation, family income, family's support network from friends and extended family members (including the absent parent if available). Further, outcomes in families where single-parenthood is chosen is higher, as the single parent is typically older, has established employment and social supports, and has considered the pros and cons of raising a child alone. Statistically, children in single parent homes fare worse than those with two parents. In the United States, family structure contributes to five characteristics of a child's well being. These include lower birthrates and higher death rates among infants when there is just one parent. Also, the number of children ages 15-17 in school and in good health is much lower, and the number of children becoming pregnant at these ages is increasing. However...

...question1 What are the remedies available under the Law of Contract? Remedy is where the inured party enforce their rights or get a reward for a loss. It also means to achieve justice where legal rights are involved. There are many types of remedies and some of them may be ordered by court, granted by judgement, by agreement between two parties and operation of law. The remedies depend on the nature of the breach. The remedies available under the Law Of Contract are Rescission, Restitution, Damages, Specific Performance, Injunction,Mareva Injunction, and Quantum Meruit. Rescission has been defined as the cancellation of contract between parties. It enables the innocent party to cancel off the contract when there is any misinterpretation by the other party. Misinterpretation is as the defence if the innocent party is sued for damages or specific performance by the other party. Under the Sale of Goods, the innocent party has the rights to cancel off the contract when there is a breach of implied condition as to title, correspondence with description, merchantable quality, fitness for purpose and sale by sample corresponding to those implied in contract of sale. Restitution is sometimes referred as quasi-contract. Quasi-contract is a contract created by courts. Quasi contract is actually not a legal contract but it is actually a legal substitute which is formed to impose equity between the two parties. It does not rely on the plaintiff, person who brings a case against another...

...Coconut Conservation status: Secure | Coconut Palm | | Kingdom: | Plantae | Division: | Magnoliophyta | Class: | Liliopsida | Order: | Arecales | Family: | Arecaceae | Genus: | Cocos | Species: | C. nucifera | | Binomial name | Cocos nucifera L. | The Coconut Palm(Cocos nucifera), is a member of the familyArecaceae (palm family). It is the only species in the genus Cocos, and is a large palm, growing to 30 m tall, with pinnateleaves 4-6 m long, with pinnae 60-90 cm long; old leaves fall cleanly leaving the trunk smooth. The term coconut refers to the fruit of the coconut palm. Origins and Cultivation The origins of this plant are the subject of debate with some authorities claiming it is native to southeast Asia, while others claim its origin is in north-western South America. Fossil records from New Zealandindicate that small coconut-like plants grew there as far back 15 million years ago. Even older fossils have been uncovered in Rajasthan,India. Regardless of their origins, coconuts have spread across much of the tropics, in particular along tropical shorelines. Since its fruit is light and buoyant, the plant is readily spread by marine currents, which can carry coconuts significant distances. The Coconut palm thrives on sandy soils and is highly tolerant of salinity and prefers areas with abundant sunlight and regular rainfall (75-200 cm annually), which makes colonising the many shorelines of the tropics relatively straightforward. Coconuts...

...ethical dilemma that my best friend has experienced at her workplace. As you read this paper you will find out exactly what the relationship between values and morals are when it comes to working in a nursing home. Also you will gain knowledge on how I examined the way external social pressures influenced some business ethics in this situation. Dilemma 3. Have you ever faced an ethical dilemma in the workplace? In this essay you will find the different relationships between personal values and moral concepts that have occurred in an ethical dilemma. As you continue to read this essay you will find out information on a person I know that has come face to face with an ethical dilemma as a certified nurse's aide. An ethical dilemma according to www.wikipedia.org, “is a complex situation that often involves an apparent mental conflict between moral imperatives, in which to obey one would result in transgressing another.” People often come across ethical dilemmas in an attempt to refute an ethical system or moral code. What happened to my friend at the nursing home, was that it was around the Christmas holidays and one of the residents family members wanted to give my best friend who was one of the CNAs that took care of their loved one, at the nursing home extra money and gift cards for taking care of their loved one. My best friend knew that it was against policy...

...Evolutionary Interpretation of Gift-giving Behavior in Modern Norwegian Society Iver Mysterud, Department of Biology, University of Oslo, P.O. Box 1066 Blindern, NO-0316 Oslo, Norway. Email: mysterud@bio.uio.no Thomas Drevon, Department of Biology, University of Oslo, P.O. Box 1066 Blindern, NO-0316 Oslo, Norway (Current address: USIT, Web gruppa, University of Oslo, P.O. Box 1086 Blindern, NO-0317 Oslo, Norway) Tore Slagsvold, Department of Biology, University of Oslo, P.O. Box 1066 Blindern, NO-0316 Oslo, Norway Abstract: We have studied gift giving at Christmas among 50 graduate students in Norway. The students invested more the closer the coefficient of relatedness. However, partners ranked highest, which is natural for people at the start of their reproductive career. All students gave to their parents, siblings, and children, most gave to their grandparents, and only a third gave to some, but not all, of their genetic aunts/uncles. Twenty percent gave to first cousins, and none to second or third cousins. Similar patterns for gifts received were found. There were also sex differences (e.g. women had larger exchange networks than men), and birth order effects. Firstborns spent more on relatives than laterborns. However, middleborns gave more to their male friends than both firstborns and lastborns. We conclude that the results are consistent with theories of kin selection, reciprocity, sex differences and birth order effects. Keywords: gift giving, kin selection...

...and Contrast Gift of the Magi and The Necklace Deanna Pennington Eng125 Journey into Literature Instructor Carter September 28, 2014 There are many differences in The Gift of the Magi, by O. Henry and The Diamond Necklace, by Guy de Maupassant, there are also various similarities. Some of the similarities include being set around the same time of year, winter, both set at the turn of century, both couples have the same economic situation, both couples love each other, both couples made sacrifices and the pride shown in both stories. The differences are what stands out the most, Mathilde is selfish and only thinks of herself, Della and instead of just bemoaning their lack of funds figure out a ways to get each other a gift for Christmas, Mathilde lies to her friend about the necklace. Although there are many similarities and differences, these are just a few. Both stories are set in the winter, this is made obvious in both stories by certain passages. In The Gift of the Magi we know that Della is trying to by a Christmas gift for Jim. “One dollar and eighty seven cent. And the next day would be Christmas” (Henry, 1906). In The Diamond Necklace, we are left to draw the conclusion that it is winter with the date of the ball being January 18th. “The Minister of Public Instruction and Madame Ramponneau request the honor of M. and Madame Loisel at the palace of the Ministry on Monday evening January 18th” (de Maupassant, 1884). The time of year in The Gift of the Magi...

...funny how you “run into” old friends on social websites. Sometimes, you try not to and succeed, while other times it’s just not in God’s hands. I had a friend recently inquire my opinion on the topic of speaking in tongues in church. Over the years, it has been brushed under the rug due to the spiritual gift becoming ceased in AD 70 (CC); however, the argument of whether it was truly ceased or not is in question. This in fact is where I was asked to step in. I first broke down the meaning of spiritual gifts, which are gifts of God enabling the Christian to perform his or her service such as the gift of prophets, evangelists and teaching (Elwell p.1135). Ephesians 4:12-13 and 15 state that spiritual gifts were given “for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect [complete, mature] man, unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ . . . speaking the truth in love, [that we] may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ.” After breaking down the meaning of spiritual gifts, my friend further asked, “Aren’t spiritual gifts the same as the Fruit of the Spirit?” I proceeded to explain that with 1 Corinthians 12:4-7 as a base, each service has a different gift all for the common good. The most significant difference between the two is that spiritual gifts were merely GIFTS that God gave to us so He...

...Rites of passage are present in all cultures and religions throughout history. In these rites of passage, gifts play an important role both in marking the transformation and in reinforcing the relationship between the giver and the receiver of the gift. One particularly important rite of passage that is present in most cultures is that of marriage. Each culture has their own traditions surrounding weddings and while in modern day America many different traditions from cultures around the world are practiced and considered very important in today’s society. In this paper we will examine the similarities and differences between Somali-American wedding traditions and those of European-Americans, along with the religious and cultural traditions they've discarded or lessened in practice to fit into the always changing American lifestyle. In a traditional Somali-American wedding, religion plays a huge role from the very beginning of the relationship, when a man courts the woman all the way to the final stage of tying of the knot. Since 99% of Somalis are sunni-muslims, the religion that governs this marriage process is Islam. When a man is interested in marrying a woman he must first consult with his elders, then, the man must next talk to the woman’s parents and elders. The woman’s elders then make a decision based upon how well they know the man’s elders, and the if they find the man and his family to be a suitable match. How fit a man is, is not only determined by his actions but...

...------------------------------------------------- Visits and gifts When visiting a home, it is considered good manners to bring a small gift for one's host, generally in the form of a dessert or other food item. As such, parties are usually in the form of potlucks. It is extremely common for guests to take their shoes off before entering a home. A shoe rack on the porch or footwear left outside a doorway of a residence indicate that shoes should be removed. The offering of food is related to the gift-giving culture. The pidgin phrases "Make plate" or "Take plate" are common in gatherings of friends or family that follow a potluck format. It is considered good manners to "make plate", literally making a plate of food from the available spread to take home, or "take plate", literally taking a plate the host of the party has made of the available spread for easy left-overs. It is considered gracious to take the plate, or make a small plate, even if you don't intend to eat it. In part, this tradition is related to clean-up, being a good guest by not leaving the mass of left-overs at the party-throwers house and making them alone responsible for clean up. In more recent times, this has also evolved into donating your left-overs to the homeless population, especially if you're having a get-together at a public park or similar location, as it is likely there is a homeless population living nearby as well. It is also considered thoughtful to bring back gifts from a trip for friends and family. Some people use the...

...Friends and Me On this planet, who can’t live without friends? We need our peers to live our lives; friendship is one of the most important assets in our lives. Sometimes we cannot live without friends. According to relationship experts, we have to make friendships with good friends such as people that we can trust, share events, and celebrate our lives with. Even though I have so many friends, buddies and faraway friend are two of the types of friends that I cannot live happily without. Buddies are like one soul, living in two bodies, and I can share anything with them even the saddest thing of my life. I met Ulysses in English 099. Ulysses was the kindest person that I knew, and we became buddies. Ulysses was a good listener; he never complained about anything I said even though my English was very bad. For example, Ulysses woke up at 3 am listening to my complaints about why I cannot go to Vietnam when my dad passed away. Because of the distance between Vietnam and America, I asked all my classes’ professors, and none of them agreed for me to take two weeks off. At that moment, I was collapsed; I loved my dad, but I could not see him the last time. After talking to Ulysses, which was a relief because I was not mad anymore. He gave me advices they and convinced me to focus on the future, and he made me happy again. Friendship is two side relationships, so I do nice things for my buddy too. One time Ulysses and I went to Best Buy; I saw him continuously staring at a tablet...

...Friend is the definition of a person who likes and enjoys being with someone. It started when I’m in middle school in 8th grade during the lunch period. I met a student name Brandon which we sat in a same table. I don’t talked to Brandon much because I was quiet. Supposedly, I mostly stay quiet for not talking to student too much and have conversation. When I’m with my new friend I wonder if Brandon is a good friend to hang out with. I decided to watch Brandon every time I see him around in lunch period. This way Brandon’s true nature reveals to me. The result of being social with Brandon tells me everything I need to know about himself. Even when I get to know him better, it’s still the same thing when Brandon reveal himself to me and I would do the same. I supposed to tell Brandon about one of the things about myself, but not everything about me. One of the most important attributes that I value a great deal in any friend of mine, and that makes up a great portion of my best friend, hence the importance, is trust. Without...

...sometimes I buy households, Sometimes I I need to go in the shopping malls to buy gifts formal occasion or to buy something for closer one. I used to do window shopping with my friends, sometimes as well some personal things this is very simple. I do go in the shopping malls usually once or twice a month to buy my cloths, computer accessories, books or something whatever I need. If I need some medicines then I also go in the shopping malls to buy that. But basically I go in the shopping malls to buy different kind of cloths for myself or I go in the library to buy books. This is my patience to collect and buy more and more books. This is what I enjoy very much. But which is quite boring to me is buying the households. I need to go shopping malls sometimes to buy some household things. For examples – vegetables, bed sheets, different kind of stuffs like flower base, flower, meet, fish all there things for my house and utensils as well. So buying this things are quite mandatory for our house and most of the time I used to do the work for our family. But this is not really enjoying. This is what I do really because this is essential for our family. Another thing is quite boring to buy gifts for the formal occasion. In some formal occasions, for example is there is any marriage ceremony of my fathers colleague or something like that then of course my father request me or sometimes ask me to buy gifts for this occasion. This is really a very boring work to do. Because I don’t know...

...Spirit gifts God gives us gifts to use on this earth and my gifts are Service, Mercy, Exhortation, and Giving. I like my gifts; it does describe who I am. I don’t disagree with my gifts because it’s who I am and who I want to be. I see these gifts as tools; tools I can use to bring people to God. I had a dark and rough past; and all I wanted to do since God got me back on my feet is be there for others, because I didn’t have anyone there for me. Even before I was saved I enjoyed being a helping hand and a friend. I see God using me at this school after I graduate so I can be there for lost students and not just preach to them and not just talk to them, but to be a friend to them. God made us all different and one way he made us different his the gifts he gives us. Thing is its up to us to use and act on these gifts. When I saw what my gifts are I felt amazed! I didn’t know I had been using my gifts that God gave me. Knowing my gifts I just want to use them more and show the world what God can through me. It hurts me to see people sin I am afraid for them; I don’t want to see any of them go to hell. I want to see all my brothers and sisters in heaven with me. Even though this world may be falling I am going to use my gifts and try to lift up this world; because my faith will not be shaken and my faith with stand tall for all to see. Gods gifts are not just gifts their blessings to be used to pour out in to others. These gifts I have been blessed with...
