...College Application/ Personal Statement 05/23/14 Prompt: Describe the world you come from — for example, your family, community or school — and tell us how your world has shaped your dreams and aspirations. As a young Mexican American adult I have experienced the best of both worlds. My parents came to America a long time ago in order to establish a good foundation for their children. When my parents first moved to San Diego they bought a house that fit their budget. They bought a home in a community called SouthEast San Diego, which is considered a dangerous and inferior community when in reality it is full of culture and unity. Unfortunately the schools in the community were not helping me succeed as a student, so my parents enrolled me at Our Lady of Angels, a private school I attended until the eighth grade. After eighth grade my parents chose to move to Coronado Island so that I could attend Coronado High School. My experience in the private school system is where my religious beliefs and athletic ability really began to develop. Although I had been raised a catholic before I attended the private school, I never really took the subject seriously and religion wasn't a big part of my life, but Our Lady of Angels has taught me how to get closer to God and how to love him/her for all God has done for me. Our Lady of Angels also inspired me to pursue sports, there I played flag football, basketball, and soccer. I have played sports in my yard and at clubs before...

It just felt like a little scrape There are really only three sports that make up this discussion basketball, football, and baseball. Next, I will tell you about how going pro affects the athletes of the following sports. ≈≈≈≈≈ First, I am going to tell you how the rule the NCAA has placed are affecting athletes in basketball. When should young college athletes be able to make the decision to go pro? This is a topic for discussion no matter what sport you are playing, and they are all very much different too. The NBA changed its rule in 2005. The NBA made an agreement in 2005 about young basketball players going pro. Going pro 2 “Article X of the NBA's 2005 Collective Bargaining Agreement, a provision that required all potential NBA draftees to be at least 19 years old and one year removed from their high school graduation.” (Hughes, Grant) Why put an age restriction on high school basketball players?...

...Potential Careers in Sports Management Esther Cole University of Incarnate Word This is my very first course in sports management and I have learned that there are many paths I could take once I graduate. Right now it is too early to feel passionate about any one career path. I will discuss various careers in sports management and I how feel about them now as I am just starting out. I hope to look back at this paper when I am finished and see if my views and opinions have changed. The Number of students who decide to get a MBA in sports management has grown significantly since the recession. A Ba in sports management was not producing jobs that many hopeful students thought it would. The sports industry was not immune to the recession like many people thought. Some people thought that the sports business would never feel the effects of the recession but they were wrong. Both the NBA and the NFL cut jobs during the recession and this caused a ripple effect with new graduates. They were forced to take low paying jobs working in the industry but as ticket sellers or working in the concessions. Still others who felt there was no other option took unpaid internships in the hope of landing a job afterward (Belson, 2009). Sports management degrees date back to the 1970’s with a rocky start. The degree was not seen as legitimate, “many academics mocked them for teaching how to mix Gatorade” (Wecker, 2011). The program has come a long way and has advanced into a masters level and...

...had little time to figure out what this execrable meaning meant. Before I could speculate, I was already experiencing the words that I tremor to apprehend. The first week of football camp for three consecutive days, five hours long, and nothing but training. Something you never forget going into my freshman year. Lessons come in different shapes and forms you just have to realize what to take from your experiences you go through. Throughout the seasons many friends were made, I’ve became more outgoing, and more disciplined through it all. Being athletic was always something I loved being as it was a way to make new friends, make memories, and to have more discipline. I found myself playing sports, whether it was in football, wrestling, or baseball. I knew where I belonged, even if it’s not wanting to try and go professionally, sports cleared my mind. A way to escape reality, adventuring into my own realm. To strive on and make the most out of my high school years....

...What’s wrong with school systems today? What is wrong with the school systems these days? In the book Friday Night Lights it says “It’s just a part of our lives. It’s just something that you’re involved in. it’s just like going to church or something like that.” Is it talking about the presents of drugs? Is it talking about all the alcohol that is consumed by high school students? Or is it the fact that they spend all of their time chasing after someone? Nope, it’s talking about sports. Sports in most public high school allow most kids to just slid by with their grades. I asked my boss at work once, how his school treated sports players. He answered “well I played both football and baseball so I didn’t have to do crap in school they just let my slid by with the easiest class.” He also added that “even if you were failing a class if you were valuable to the team the coach would call your teacher and tell her to give you a D for right now so you could play.” If you ask me that is kind of messed up like in the section of the book They Say I Say, by Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstein. The authors state “what happened to personal responsibility” this it talking about why do people take responsibility for their own actions and that is so true. If you do this then what are you teaching these kids? Are you teaching them to work hard for their grades or are you teaching them to just be good in one category in their lives? If you think you are actually going to go pro here are so...

...know that wrestling is one of the toughest/best high school sport for a kid? Wrestling is just good for you all around. It will help you in so many ways. It also helps kids stay out of trouble. Therefore, wrestling is the toughest/best sport for a high school kid, because it builds character, it makes you mentally tougher, and it makes everything else in life just that much easier. The first reason you should wrestle is because it builds character. If you ever watch a college wrestling match, they don’t brag, and if you have a conversation with a college wrestling they are usually very humble. Same goes for High school wrestlers, but college wrestlers have more character because they have wrestled longer. Dan Gable once said, “More enduringly than any other sport wrestling teaches self-control and pride. Some have wrestled without great skill; none have wrestled without pride.” Therefore, this infers that you have to have pride/character to be a good wrestler, you don’t need skill, the mindset will win the match....

...start. Your excitement is overwhelming. You have spent your entire life working up to this point; you are a college athlete. You are being paid to attend school and play your favorite sport for it. Your coach walks in with an upset look on his face. You think to yourself that it’s just going to be a difficult practice. Your coach actually tells you that you do not have practice today. You wont have practice ever again. Your entire life work gone, just like that. With your heart crushed, you cannot understand why the sport is just, canceled. You walk up to your coach and ask what the problem is. Your coach, as disappointed as you, tells you that the University board of athletics has decided to drop your “life” from the program to abide by the Title IX requirements and for not being a profitable program. This actually happened here at the University of Utah 50 years ago and it’s because there is a problem going on at Universities like The U and it is that men’s non-revenue sports, like wrestling, are being impacted negatively. Wresting is beginning to fade from colleges that are not in the Big Ten or the Ivy League, and Colleges like the University of Utah are participating in letting the sport diminish. In an article written by Coyte G. Cooper, “Involving the core product” “While there were 363 NCAA wrestling programs in 1981, the number of men’s wrestling programs offered by the NCAA had diminished to 234 in 2005.” Schools should stop making excuses for dropping the sport and making...

...After School Programs Helping Kids Succeed 1,565 Words Parents now-a-days spend a lot of time working, and when they’re kids get out of school they have nowhere to go but an empty, unsupervised house. A lot of the time when kids are left alone for a long period of time, they tend to get in some trouble; whether it’s with their friends outside of the house, or alone at home. Many parents may not have the time or money to send their kids to a day care program, so they can’t really do anything about it. But many schools have the choice whether or not to have after school programs but decide not to because they don’t want to keep their school open after hours. It isn’t just the school’s decision though; it also depends on whether the school has the money to keep them open or not. According to USA Today: “Tight local budgets and reduced federal funding for police, along with new anti-terrorism duties, have stretched police departments and led to cuts in community programs for youths.” All kids need a safe place to be after school, even if it’s for study hall or a quiet place where they could do their homework. After school programs can help children a lot and in many ways. They have an impact on kids because it gives them something to do and it provides them with positive role models. Some of the ways that after school programs can help children is by giving them a safe and supportive learning environment after school, opportunities to experience new activities in arts, culture...

...April 27, 2016 Personal Philosophy There comes a time in most people’s lives when they think about what they truly believe. For me, this was these past few weeks. I sat down and really thought about my beliefs about education. I thought about my beliefs on children, the value of education, and the role of teachers. These thoughts helped me to form my own philosophy about education as a whole. This will be important for me becoming a teacher because there will be times when all of my beliefs may be questioned and/or tested by either myself or others. One of these beliefs (and the most important thing to know) is that all children have the ability, and right to learn, no matter what. A lot of the time it is not about the student; it is how they are being taught. Yes, some students take a little more time to catch on to something than other students, but that does not make them incapable of learning at all. Teaching students by scaffolding based on information they already know will make it easier for them. For example, my little brother struggled with language when he was younger. My parents, knowing how much he loves Harry Potter movies, bought him a set of the books and the movies because he makes connections between the words in the books to pictures in the movies. This allowed him to better understand what some of these words in the books meant and the movies were able to give him examples of what these words mean. I had a similar experience when I was in high school. It was the...

...* DAY1 * What is Sports Marketing? It depends! (IV League Schools say!) * We need to influence and Persuade! * Sponsorship “getting the bat in the hands of the right player” * IMGbiggest sports marketing agency in the world, Mark McCormick, said “it is putting a celebrity/athlete with a product/company”….and that is it. * Louis Shefield* wanted NBA basketball team in Miami (Miami Heat). He said “its easy to fill a stadium once, but each time its hard”. He saw that basketball would get bigger than it was and it needed to go to Miami. He said sports marketing is just about “Sagacity.” * Sagacity A vision for the future. Example by Louis, Nike taking swoosh off bottom of shirt and putting it on the chest. And, the only reason we know about Ted Turner is because of exposure. Active and innovate an idea. Dictionary Definition: foresight, discernment, or keen perception; ability to make good judgments. Seeing a trend and executing it! Execute your idea and fulfill what you start! * Tommy Karam Wanted to turn LSU scoreboard into a marketing opportunity by putting ads on it using triplicates (3 rotations: purple, purple and tiger stadium, then purple, tiger stadium and a company’s name). He thought this would be sagacity! He spoke with a man at Exxon and he liked Karam’s idea and Karam sold the sponsorship to Exxon for $250,000 per scoreboard (when they were going for around $300,000). Karam later found out that corporate signage is against University procedures...

...High School coaches should not be required to give equal playing time to all players because the coaches put the best players out on the field, they do not bench athletes for personal reasons, and because they want to win. If the athlete is not as good as most of the players, he/she should not expect a starting spot. Some people might say that is not fair and everyone needs to play, but you have to think about the team. It is not fair to the team if they are not always putting the best out there to win most of the games. For example in Fred Bowen’s article, is states “When you get into high school sports, it’s not about playing time, it’s about who is best”. And in Bill Speros article it says “If your child is not playing/starting it is because your child is not good enough”. You might say that is harsh, but the truth hurts sometimes. The coach does not mean anything personal if your son does...

Students that participated in the band had higher test scores in English, biology, and mathematics (Gouzouasis). Participation in the band will better prepare a student for a successful future. Being involved in music during high school leads students to have to higher test scores. A group of students involved in music lessons scored higher on a mathematics achievement test than the students with no music lessons (Hallam 11). In 2012 studies showed that college bound students who were involved in music performance groups scored higher on critical reading, mathematics, and writing on the SAT (collegeboard). Which will allow students easier access to the college they want to go to. The U.S. Department of Education found that by twelfth grade students who participated in band had significantly higher skill levels in mathematics (MusicforAll). ...Personal Best Athlete Profile Bill Altman, 82 San Antonio, Texas Senior softballer proves “If you build it, they will come” When Bill Altman retired from his Air Force career, he was itching for something to do to keep moving. He had played baseball in high school, fast pitch softball at the University of Michigan and had even spent a year on the Air Force all star softball team. But after flying missions over Vietnam and starting a family, he had not found time for sports. When he learned about senior games having softball, he found some guys his age to make up a team. It was fun and he wanted to play more. But there were no other senior teams in San Antonio. Bill Altman changed all that. He and his team found more players, and the San Antonio Senior Softball League was founded in 1987. He is still its chairman and primary advocate. The league obtained old fields from the city and fixed them up with money they raised. Today there are hundreds of seniors from every walk of life that are sharing the love of baseball and staying fit for life. The league has a plan to expand to a modern complex that will meet their growing needs and can host regional tournaments to bring in tourism. In addition to managing, playing and running the league, Altman has participated in state and national senior games in softball, tennis and track and field events. He’s also been inducted into the Texas Senior Softball Hall of Fame. Along the way he has maintained his Personal Best and helped...

...Dear Lukas Raschilla, In your article, “Athletes are artists, not role models”, you claim that you are bewildered that anyone would view professional athletes as role models. By saying that sports figures are "not" and "shouldn't be expected" to be role models in their actions on and off the playing field is in my opinion giving a free pass for bad behavior. As the saying goes...to those who much has been given, much is expected. You claim, "athletes do not choose to be role models", but I feel anyone who holds a position of notoriety and popularity with the public should shoulder that admiration with dignity. As we know, merely by association in any career, be it sports, education, health care, government, and even religion, does not guarantee that the individuals will be positive role models. Instead, moral obligations need to be nurtured and, when necessary, consequences clearly enforced in incidents of conduct not befitting the role that person represents. It is unrealistic to think there will not be transgressions in the athletic arena as they are all human, but even this can serve as a valuable lesson to young fans. Charles Barkley is correct when he says in the Nike commercial that "parents should be the most important role model for kids" and no one expects a sports figure to replace that position, but it also takes a village to raise good citizens. Everyone that occupies attention in a child's life should realize that their actions will be seen and will affect the...
