...Getting a college degree is very important to me. I want to achieve my lifelong goal in being the first in my family to graduate college. In addition, my degree will also help me prepare for success after college, and I will have a sense of accomplishment in achieving my goal on my own. Some people wonder why a college degree is important to have, but it can take you far in life by being a good role model, succeeding in life, and having confidence. Working to get my degree I became a positive influence in my family members. Growing up in a home where no one had a college degree was a rough situation for me; I used to think to myself that the only way to get out of this situation was to have an education, so I decided to further my education by going to college. By the time I started college I realized that I would be the first in my family to get my degree; therefore, I became an inspiration to my siblings at home. Some of my siblings told me that they're not going off to college, but they beg to differ since I said to them that “Education is key to success.” They knew that it was the only way for them to achieve their goals in becoming something that...

...2012 “Going back to College” College is something that most high school seniors look forward to every year. This is an exciting new endeavor that they long for after graduating from high school. Many high school seniors take different paths when they graduate, but few understand the dedication required to achieve their dreams. My views were the same after graduating, but my journey took a much different direction. Originally signing and planning to go to UNCC, I passed up my athletic scholarship for a professional baseball contract with the Detroit Tigers. College was something that I felt could be done at any stage of my life, and my chance to play professional baseball was something that I may never get a chance to do again. I enjoyed every minute of every day that I played, but sometimes I wonder where I would be today if I had passed up that professional contract. Would I have gotten the chance to experience thousands of fans cheering my team on, or the never ending bus trips from city to city ? My eleven years of playing experience taught me the dedication that one must have to achieve a goal that few would attempt. Long hours in the gym, throwing bullpens, and worst of all running. These were just a few of the things I would have to do on a daily basis both in season and out of season. I hate running more than anything but this was required to be a successful pitcher. Reaching my goal of getting to the Major Leagues was all I focused on. College and playing...

...Goal Setting Long-Term Goal Today I am going to tell you about my long, medium, and short-term goals. All of those goals are different so they mean many different things. In ten years I would see myself in college because my education is important to me. No matter what is going on in my life I will always want to go to college so that people can be proud of me. What I will be doing is learning about the law so, most of the time I will be reading, writing, and math is used in the career that I would like to do. The career I will have is being a lawyer. The reason I want to be a lawyer is that I like to help people in hard situations. Choosing this goal is important to me because I want to be the person to say “ I made this person happy” and because I will be a hero for saving people in their needs. Other than money the career will give me a chance to see other people’s lives instead of just mine. What relationship that school does for m to help reach my goal is teaching me about being respectful, solving math problems, reading papers, and writing things out. This stuff is useful because we have to use all of these things in that career. Medium-Term Goal...

...Looking Towards the Future When I was younger my parents always taught my siblings and I to set individual goals for ourselves and family goals for everyone to achieve. We would each write down one or two goals on New Year’s Day and we would sit around the dinner table and read our goals to the rest of the family. After all 7 of us read our personal goad and goal for the family we then would go and put them on the fridge where they stayed for the majority of the year. When our goal(s) got accomplished we would cross it off or put a check by it. Of course when we were all younger our goals were definitely not as specific as they were when we got older. At the time I thought my parents making us do this was dumb and ridiculous but as I got older I realized what a blessing it was, and how much it truly did help in our family life, and personal life. Since I’ve had to set goals my entire life I have learned that by doing this it makes projects, assignments, daily life, etc. a lot less stressful because I know what I want to achieve, how I’m going to do it, and by when I will accomplish these goals. Goal setting is also psychologically healthy. It helps you feel more purposeful, and that can stave off a sense of stagnation and mental health issues like depression (http://vizedhtmlcontent.next.ecollege.com/pub/content/9ab3605a-5a33-4b14-8048-143db6e60251/Setting_SMART_goals.pdf). Setting personal, professional, and academic goals has always been an easy task for myself, however I...

...The sun was shining bright that school morning, but as I sat in homeroom, Algebra, it felt like it was storming inside. I know the day all too well, report card day. Every time they send grades home I always have perfect grades, but each time can turn out different. As Mrs. Gibson hands me my paper I sigh in relief, straight A’s. Any other student would have still felt if it was all B’s, but I would never. All the other kids don’t care about the big picture, but I do. I’m only in 8th grade, but my biggest worry is college. However, picking the field to which I would like to study has been a difficult task and has been varied many times. The goals, in which I wish to achieve through attending college, are those of self-sustainability, intellect, and an all around better knowledge of myself. I will achieve these goals by working hard in the classroom, and placing myself in unfamiliar situations to gain character and knowledge, which will help me in the future. Once these goals are attained, I plan on becoming some type of financial adviser. I feel that these goals will help me to be an understanding and knowledgeable man who will do anything to reach the satisfaction of the customer. However, the choice to pursue a degree in business has not always been in the cards. I feel that the influence my father has had on me through his concepts of smart buying and saving money...

However for me, college is a whole new ball game and is not only important for future success, but a broader and bigger bubble. My background actually plays a huge role on why college is important to attend. I come from an immigrant family who has worked day and night to earn money. My mother is both educated and have associate’s degree from India. My dad is educated, but has not gone college. I will be the first one to go to college in America, the country of opportunity. My family’s dearth of education yields that my family background plays an important role in the reason for me to attend college. Attending college is important for me because my parents lacked a phenomenal education, which comes down for me to carry my family pride and attend a rigorous college....

...Student Survival Guide Gen/105 February 7th Student Survival Guide There are many different ways that I can be successful throughout my journey with Distant Learning. I have chosen this route because dedicating my time to a nearby college means taking away from my children’s needs. There are many people out there that don’t take the time to teach their children the basics but my almost three year knows her ABC’s, numbers to twenty, a variety of animals and can write some letters. I feel that these past nine weeks have taught me to stay motivated so I can complete my degree. It has taken some time to adapt to taking classes online but it’s always good to challenge yourself with something new. Attending classes anytime during the day seven days a week along with help from my graduation team is going to help me achieve my goals. There are advantages and disadvantages to distant learning, but what makes it so manageable is not being afraid to ask for help when needed. I can contact my instructor whether it’d be through email or picking up the telephone. One disadvantage is for the students who are used to being in a classroom setting, learning best by seeing and hearing the instructor. It may take a little while longer for these students to adapt. I feel that being able to review feedback and assignments that have been posted has been really helpful throughout these past weeks, along with discussions with the other students. Being able to discuss with other students...

...Personal Responsibility and College Success John Smith GEN/200 October 22, 2012 Andrea Anderson Personal Responsibility and College Success Personal responsibility is defined as having accountability for the actions that are made in everyday life. All actions have consequences and an individual needs to be comfortable with every decision that they make. A proper understanding of responsibility is a valuable tool when trying to achieve goals as a student. Each student needs to be personally responsible for their own success in a college setting. A student needs to show determination even though it may become easy to look for ways to not be accountable. The first step in understanding personal responsibility is knowing what you want to achieve and how you are going to get there. Many students view higher education as a necessary step in becoming successful in life. Student personal responsibility involves certain prescribed behaviors that lead to academic success and also influences self-evaluation (Singg 2001). Most new students see college as a way to better their lives yet lack the knowledge of what it takes to achieve academic success. This lack of understanding can often lead to failure. My inability to understand and adapt to these qualities led to me dropping out of school. My better understanding of personal responsibility was crucial when deciding to go back to school. The first step is to...

Struggling every day to make friends with people who knew each other all their lives was tough. How could i be welcomed to a school where everyone had their group of friends with no room for a nobody like me? I was the girl who kept to herself because of the fear of being judged. I figured wanting would lead to trying and trying would lead to failure. But now I find I can’t stop wanting. High School has been a very interesting experience for me. It has definitely had its high and lows and many confusing experiences in between. Overall, i feel like i have been equipped for not only college, but also life as a whole. High School has taught me many things, both academically and emotionally. It has revealed and exposed my true colors, both good and bad and as a result, has built my aspects of my character. I gave up on being that outcast and just focused on being me. Now my only aspiration is to achieve my goals in life, one of those being attending college. College is such a big deal to me now.
