7 Characteristics of a Great Boss
The weekend is over and here we are, hello Monday and your boss has already started the morning off on a bad note. You feel like telling your boss “I quit” because her appreciation for anything or anyone does not exist. When was the last time you heard the boss say “great job, thank you for reporting in today, have a great evening; see you tomorrow”? These few simple words make a world of a difference. To hear the words “thank you” can modify your outlook of quitting or wanting to stay. Making that judgment varies on the person you work for. A noble boss is one who provides training and leadership to their personnel; however, some bosses are less efficient in their supervisory methods and procedures.
To define boss - one who guides or oversees employees and exercises authority and control. Their responsibilities may include insuring the work is completed; policies and protocols are followed, and offer the crucial training to achieve these duties (Wikipedia, 2015). They have the ability to employ new workers and fire those that do not measure up. How responsibilities are conducted can be the distinction between a virtuous boss and an immoral boss. The personality of whether a boss is measured bad or good is contingent on the perception of the employee.
A respectable boss directs his employees by assigning work based on an individual’s strengths. They take time to acquire what skills the employees have and in what way they can best be used and places that employee where they will be most successful. They aid employees to set individual goals and assist them in achieving those goals. Offering encouragement to their employees to perform better and keeping an open door policy, they are not frightened to approach them for a decision. The end result employees are happier; they feel at ease and productivity has sky rocketed.
Be sure you are doing your part trying to win them over while you’re adjudicating them on their first impressions. It’s not wise to be scrolling through your messages or giving the impression that you are bored by looking at your watch, if you truly want a candidate that is qualified or a stellar performer give them your full attention. Worthy managers have great communication among their employees, they offer appreciative phrases for the durable work, and most of all they create a warm atmosphere and are friendly.
First, communication is important to an employee. Good bosses are able to communicate with their employee. When they are in need of help they support them in whatever way they can. No matter the number of times an employee seek the help of their boss, they are always there to guide them when they can. Failure to communicate will cause the relationship to fail and ultimately production will suffer. Without effective communication success will not come.
Secondly, offer your kindness. Being kind to your employee creates an environment that is friendly and welcoming. Building try between you and your employee creates a safety net, they feel like you are more like a friend as well as their boss. Showing respect to one another creates a lasting productive relationship. Motives are understood.
Lastly, offering encouragement goes a long way. This let them know that you are appreciative of their deliverables. You can expect your boss to consistently encourage high performance from you and show that you will success together. Good bosses give their complete devotion to their employees to flourish in their goals. Taking credit or achieving accomplishments does not create a healthy relationship and will cause dissension with the work force.
While communication, kindness and offering encouragement are all great traits; there are additional characteristics of a “Great Boss”. Be honest, use integrity, have a commanding presence, be optimistic, consistently give support, inspire them to achieve better and have a sense of humor. A crucial area in the operational and achievement of any business is teamwork, a business will not prosper if there are apparent separations between hierarchical ranks and segments amongst employees of the same level. A ‘good’ boss should be talented to build up a relationship with his or her workforce and implant a sense of communal and joint accountability. With everyone pulling in the same direction and striving towards the same goals, output levels and efficiency in work will rise.
