THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
Introduction
“In order for us to maintain consistency and quality, we must make use of the new technology that is not widely used by different countries, which is computer. As we see, information technology, the application of computer and related technologies have accompanied information age to generation and communication of information.” - Caridad, Melody
Nowadays, in a highly technological society, human productivity is made more efficient through the development of electronic gadgets. Now, with the advent of such modernization in education, one way to globalize the process of research is to realize that technology is advancing at an incredibly fast phase. Computers are not confined to being used for entertainment but its role in education is also vast. Computers with the power of the internet have thrived in aiding communication among people. The telephone system, which is the main communication system that was invented several years ago, had undergone a great improvement, so much that today we have fixed wireless phones, mobile phones and the likes. With the rapid development of mobile phones come several services like the Short Messaging Service (SMS), Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) and others, which are readily available and add to the usefulness of mobile phones. SMS in particular is widely used in communication, and more recently has been leveraged to provide several services like airline ticketing, banking services, commercial services like share and sell (an added service provided by MTN Nigeria), where subscribers can easily share and/or sell airtime, and several others. SMS is a mobile technology that allows for sending and receiving text or even binary messages to and from a mobile phone. The relative ease of use of SMS makes it possible for a user to learn how to send SMS easily. Schofield and Kubin (2002) argued that small devices could potentially provide better interface for finding information than through page browsing and other means. More than 160 billion SMS are exchanged each month in European countries (Mavrakis, 2004), and according to Resource Shelf (2006), 48.7 billion SMS messages were sent in the second half of 2005, which is up 50% on the six months before that. Nowadays, with 45 million short messages sent in the U.K. alone every day, a mobile phone that has the easiest interface for voice communication is likely to fail the user satisfaction test if it does not provide a reasonably good SMS interface. (Gorienko & Merrick, 2003). The major advantage of SMS is its cost effectiveness, and availability, as most individuals own phone.
When it comes to technology, computers had a great impact to our society. Many businesses sector tries to cope up by upgrading computer system constantly in order to stay competitive with the rapid growth of technology today. There is no doubt that computers will someday become a common asset in all professions. But systems do not often relate expectations. Computerized world is a highly efficient one, which processing the big quantities of data and keeping. The extensive record will not be a problem to a post industrialized society, likewise the unreliable and slow processing and preparing student grades. Computers come in a variety of classification, from small to large, cheap to costly, and personal to multiuser. They engulfed with applications that are suitable and significant to these days. An institution or educational institution that still cannot cope up with these computer breakthroughs is said to be left behind.
Grading is one of the most important activities a faculty member does. Many problems in teaching arise because of grading issues. Grading System plays a key role in management of any school. It is designed to provide incentive rewards for achievement and assist in identifying problems of students. The grade of the student is the degree which determines students who need more improvement and requires more assistance which will help teachers in guiding them towards their development. It also shows where the students excel most so they can improve their skills and aim higher. At the end, it will be the reference for the judgments of whether a student can step up to a higher level of learning. From these reasons, it is clearly concluded how important to make sure that the grades of students are accurately calculated and safely stored in a well-founded database.
Bambang National High School (BNHS) has a large number of student populations. Teachers are experiencing difficulties in getting their report cards because sometimes they were delayed in passing the grades of their students due to heavy workload. Since teachers were using Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet for computing grades of their students, still there are some cases that they need to double check and it is done through manual checking. So, when the students were not informed that their grades were not yet release it would be a waste of time and effort for them in always going back to school just to get their report cards or grades. There are times that the student are not showing or updating their parents concerning about their performance in school. And sometimes the students are imitating the signature of their parents just to assure their teachers that they have showed it to their parents. Since parents are too busy with their schedules they don’t have any available time to go to the school to know and check the performance of their children. The proposed Computerized Grading System of Bambang National High School with Short Message Service provides efficient and accurate grade reports of the student and makes the grading process fast, more consistent and more reliable. To ease the difficulties in knowing the grades, a system using SMS or Short Message Service will be use wherein, each of the student will be acquiring a logon id and which will then be used in viewing their grades. They will just login through their phone using their id number and password then, the administrator will accept the student’s request. When they are already connected to the system, they can now send the keyword for accessing their grades. Implementing this SMS technology in these institutions will relieve these issues and provide further advantages for both institutions and students. This technology offers growth in efficiency, responsiveness, and performance for institutions and makes students well-informed and up-to-date about matters. Since mobile phone seems to be positive feature which most individual possess and take in all places with them, therefore an extremely effective means of transporting information to them quicker and easier.
The proposed Computerized Grading System will also be a convenience for the professors as well, because by this, delayed passing of grade will be prevented. By this, students would not wait for a long period of time just to get their papers processed. In case that a student record is lost, we can easily retrieve it with the help of the system.
Scope and Limitations The proposed project allows for rapid mark delivery as well as storing information regarding on personal and contact details of the student, including their grades. The system can only read and accept excel and MS Word files. Another is that it cannot be used as a storage of hard files (videos, audios, images). In addition, only the IT administrator will be allowed to manipulate and change the record of the student. When it happened that the teacher made mistakes to the given data, the saved file to the database can still be overwritten but the teacher should ask first for the permission of the IT administrator to overwrite it. The teacher is given only 24 hours to validate and recheck the data before it will be released to the students. There would be no alternation of grades once the records are and finalized, so the records will be secured. Upon enrollment, students will be ask for secondary password for future retrieval purposes. With the use of the Short Message Service System (SMS), students can avail their information by sending a keyword. Occasionally, students can only send keywords and short messages to the system. They will acquire logon id from the administrator for using the Short Message Service System and only one account is allowed for each of them. If a student lost his/her registered number, he can retrieve the data by using his/her secondary password. The limit of the messages that the system can send and receive is about 10 messages per second. Then, the maximum capacity of the message is 5 characters. This proposed project will serve as a tool for easier accessibility of grades, both for the convenience of the students and the faculty staffs, as well as the professors.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES The study is generally concentrating on the feasibility of creating a Computerized Grading System with SMS capability for the Bambang National High School. The literatures of this study come from conclusions and generalizations, ideas, books, journals, articles, electronic materials such as PDF or E-Book, and other existing theses and dissertations, foreign and local that are believed to be useful in the advancement of awareness concerning the study. Other unpublished thesis also helped to provide proof that this study is originally and its discussion of fact were also based on recent studies in creating more sources of related information.
Theoretical Framework Theoretically, the main purpose of the system is to create an efficient, fast and reliable Computerized Grading System with SMS System for Bambang National High School.
Computerized pattern grading makes the grading process fast, more consistent, and more reliable than traditional manual grading. However, existing computerized grading systems still require manual calculation of grade rules and then entry into data files. This series of papers describes an automatic method for grading both basic block patterns and adapted patterns, which obviates the need for this.
This research focuses on the development and implementation of an adaptive learning and grading system with a goal to increase the effectiveness and quality of feedback to students. By utilizing various concepts from established learning theories, the goal of this research is to improve the quantity, quality, and speed of feedback as it pertains specifically to the grading of computer skills with a focus on personal productivity software. Feedback has been identified as a key component of successful learning among students. This research builds upon the previous knowledge from the cognitive, behavioral, and resource-based views of learning as well as upon the establishment of grading rubrics. An automated grading system was developed that allows instructors to quickly grade multiple complex computer literacy assignments. Key to the success of the system is the ability of the system to "learn" the correct and incorrect responses and store them for future use. To understand the impact of the system on feedback, three hypotheses were created and experiments were developed to test them. The system was shown to positively affect the quantity of feedback and reduce the time required for grading assignments. No effect on the quality of the feedback comments was shown and may be a subject of further study.

Gabriel Doy (2012) The increasing usage of computers gave way for the birth of a new technological advancement that had assisted teachers to easily compute for grades, the digitization of spreadsheets. The main advantage is speed, since no manual calculations are needed, and confirmation of grade for any further necessary alterations can also be performed more quickly than traditional means. Managing grades had become easier for instructors when using electronic spreadsheets. With the advancement of information technology, the internet suddenly became an important aspect for local and global connectivity. Because the computers around the globe were logically connected through the Internet, communication had been easier with the use of E-Mail, message boards and other communication programs.
According to the Republic Act No. 10175 known as the Cybercrime Law (2012); The State recognizes the importance of providing an environment conducive to the development, acceleration, and rational application and exploitation of information and communications technology (ICT) to attain free, easy, and intelligible access to exchange and/or delivery of information; and the need to protect and safeguard the integrity of computer, computer and communications systems, networks, and databases, and the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of information and data stored therein, from all forms of misuse, abuse, and illegal access by making punishable under the law such conduct or conducts.
In relation to this, the input, alteration, or deletion of any computer data without right resulting in inauthentic data with the intent that it be considered or acted upon for legal purposes as if it were authentic, regardless whether or not the data is directly readable and intelligible.

Caraga State University SMS-Based Grade Inquiry
The university as an educational institution organization has a lot of valuable information which can be provided to students such as grade release, enrollment information and university announcement as a convenient and low-cost mobile communication technology, SMS is experiencing a very rapid growth. Indeed, Philippines lead the Asia pacific region with the highest number of messages sent per user. The Caraga State University SMS based grade inquiry system was proposed to have a more convenient, faster and easier way of transactions. This study is concerned on how to provide a service to students residing in remote areas where internet connection is not available. Since the text based technology is one of the popular ways to access information, it provides the opportunity to save time and money, and in addition it improves the way of communication. It also helps the students access the information in anytime-anywhere basis at their own convenient time. This proposed system enables the student to save time, money and effort by just typing in at their mobile phone the keyword together with their ID number and password. Furthermore, these systems provide a convenient way of inquiring grade with just press and send way. The proposed system is offering the SMS service which can be used by all mobile phones. The user only sends the SMS to the system and the system will reply the answer back to the user as an SMS also. http://www.oppapers.com/essays/Caraga-State-University-Sms-Based-Grade Inquiry/576696
Isabela State University Sms-Based-Grade-Inquiry
The Isabela State University has increased in students’ population and at the same time, the number of works of the registrar and students’ grades to be processed has also increased. One of the responsibilities of the registrars’ office is to keep the students’ grades data secured for their academic records and purposes. The proposed Student’s Grade Inquiry of Isabela State University-San Mateo Campus through Short Messaging Service provides efficient and accurate grade reports. It intends to perform the following operations; study and develop the manual operation of the office of the registrar; find out what are the circumstances causes the delay of releasing of grades; Minimize the time consumed in searching for the grades of the students. http://www.oppapers.com/essays/Sms-Based-Grade-Inquiry/416591 Automation of Grading System in San Sebastian College
“Automation had a notable impact in a wide range of industries beyond manufacturing (where it began). Largely automated telephone switchboards and answering machines have replaced once-ubiquitous telephone operators. Medical processes such as primary screening in electrocardiography or radiography and laboratory analysis of human genes, sera, cells, and tissues are carried out at much greater speed and accuracy by automated systems. Applying automation to Grading systems wherein it will also make a task easy and accurate.
We all know that making an Automated Grading System means making the task for professors in computing and calculating grades will become easy and not only that the professors will have an advantage but the students will also get a gain, because it will also improve accuracy of calculations thus making the what we call “Hula of Grades” will become non – existent in the future of San Sebastian Recoletos.
San Sebastian College Recoletos – Canlubang lacks a centralized grading system. It does not have a standalone program that will accept input, compute grades and print class cards all in a same program.”
Synthesis
The prior researched literature and studies, associated directly and indirectly to the present research provided more insights about the nature and scope of the study, which is the feasibility of a Computerized Grading System with Short Message Service System for Bambang National High School. The campus implies that the existing system they are using causes delay in giving information for the students.
The study of Caraga State University SMS based grade inquiry system was proposed to have a more convenient, faster and easier way of transactions which is likewise the same with this study. Its primary concern is about on how to acquire convenience in getting information/data and how to lessen the burden of accessing information. This proposed system enables the student to save time, money and effort by just typing in at their mobile phone the keyword together with their ID number and password. Furthermore, these systems provide a convenient way of inquiring grade with just one click and it will send right away. The only difference is that students access the information in anytime-anywhere basis at their own convenient time even when they are at home while in the researcher’s study, there’s a limit in the area to which the students can access to the system and it’s only beyond the school premises. Another is that there’s no feature of enrollment information updates that is included within the researcher’s study. But still it gave a great impact to the part of the user because of the improvements brought to us by technology.
In San Sebastian College Automated Grading System study, it pertains to the manual recording of the student’s remarks. This study is advantageous to the researcher’s present study because it gave them an idea on how to improve the manual process of computing the student’s grades by means of technology. In this case, the researcher’s proposed system is much likely related to this study because the researchers are also creating a system like this wherein transaction is fast and at the same time data would be accurate. The only difference is that, they don’t have a centralized grading system and it does not have a standalone program that will accept input, compute grades and print class cards all in a same program. Meanwhile, it is not yet a successful system since it doesn’t have the capability to manage everything in a well-defined way. Therefore, the researcher’s study are much better because it is more convenient and time saving.
The Isabela State University is experiencing many problems regarding on the delay of releasing of grades, manual operation of the office of the registrar etc. These are only some of the problems that they encounter. Excessive numbers of the students is also another reason why students experience delays in getting their grades. In order to lessen the burden, the researcher made a way to resolve it so a system is proposed, it is the Student Grade Inquiry System which is somehow related to this study. This research is the same to what the researchers are doing. The main purpose here is to have a more convenient and easier way of getting information/data. In this study the researchers are focusing on how to administer a more efficient and fast way of accessing information without having delay or burden to the student. The only difference is that, this system is more accurate and reliable since it is much secured and well managed.
According to Cybercrime Law (2012), the input, alteration, or deletion of any computer data without right resulting in inauthentic data with the intent that it be considered or acted upon for legal purposes as if it were authentic, regardless whether or not the data is directly readable and intelligible. Illegal acts upon this will be subjected under case.
The related literature and studies have significant relationship and similarities with the present study in the sense that both are discussing about the benefits of having a computerized grading system that could replace the old system that is used. Likewise, the accessibility of information will be implemented by using the short message service system. Though in some point, there are rules and regulations that must be considered from Republic Act No. 10175 to avoid illegal acts.

Figure 3. Proposed Computerized Grading System with Short Message Service System for Bambang National High School
Figure 3 represents the system where it shows how does the work flows and how the process being done. It is systematically/typically designed to make the manual system become more advance and modernize. To start with, students must have an output to be recorded by the teacher. When they are finished getting it, they are going to grade the students based on their output. The recorded grades should be already summarized. Teachers can now submit the remarks of their students to the IT administrator. Then, the administrator will be the one to compile the data to the database. When the information are being loaded, the system will now start to calculate the grades of the students and will generate the output which will be viewed by the students. On the other hand, student’s remarks can only be viewed when it’s already time of releasing the grades. But, in order to view it they will be using a technology which is their mobile phones. Their parents can also view their daughter’s/son’s grades in case they want to see it.

Computerized Grading System

...CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION Overview of the current system Computer world is now at our hands, this give improvement and development of all programs in the different agencies, in offices and in schools. Paper work become easy, computation is faster, record keeping and bringing out is fast. In schools, all works became easily fast to look at record, easily to reproduce student record. Since, computation of grades is one burden of the teachers, computerization made the answer in solving, in recording and computing students performances and achievement. The same is through in keeping records and forms incorporated in their work aside from guidance and advice. Computation of grades in school became easy for modern teacher but for tradition alone they found difficult but now no burden in recording, transmitting, giving the equivalent and the final grades for teachers who are computer literate, where time, effort and energy is minimized. This is the point of this study, to device a program in order to ease the computation of grades and ranking the students basing their subject’s performances. This is now the scenario and dilemma of Buenavista National High School. Now, with the technology which is to be developed, it will enable them to do more with less effort. The program will not continuously find way to improve and expedite the calculation of grades. The use of computer nowadays is necessary to replace the manual system that affects efficiency and effectiveness, accuracy and reliability ...

Computerized Grading System for Metropolitan Academy of Manila Christelle Joy Barreno, Amanda Arevalo, Anderson Emmanuel Abundo, and Chriselle Laput 2. 2. Page 2 1.0Introduction People nowadays are living in an information age dependent upon digital information. Digital information is electronic information, the result of computer processing. Every type of job relies upon getting information, using it, managing it, and relaying information to others. Computers enable the efficient processing and storage of information. A grading system plays a key role in the management system of any school. But, such systems do not often relate expectations, outcomes, and performance. As each student desires to achieve a good score for each assignment, exam, project and/or report, the whole process adds heavy workload for teachers in order to make their evaluation fair, comprehensive, and accurate. From the faculty perspective, these are necessary to avoid disagreement from students and parents. A computerized grading system is a highly desirable addition to the educational tool-kit, particularly when it can provide less effort and a more effective and timely outcome. Grading systems are designed to provide incentives for achievement and assist in identifying problem areas of a student. It is the most commonly used means of analyzing student performance, talents and skills. Students’ grades are vital information needed in advancing...

DEDICATED TO OUR PARENTS OUR FRIENDS LOVED ONES AND OUR ALMIGHTY GOD Table of Contents Chapter 1- INTRODUCTION Background of the Study 1 Objectives of the Study 2 CHAPTER 1 PROJECT BACKGROUND Background of the Study A grading system is a great help to students and to the school Administrator in maintaining and monitoring students’ performance. It will be easy for the students to determine their grades in every subject taken especially right after the end of a semester. A student final grade is a result of class activities, quizzes, and major examinations. Grades are given based on point systems and most schools encounter problems in recording student grades due to manual method of handling students’ grades. It is very important for every school to have a systematic and upgraded system in keeping or recording of grades. This was the reason this study on computerized grade monitoring system was conducted by the information technology of East Pacific Computer College so that as students transact with the registrar to ask for their grades, it could be easy for the registry office to release the grades of the students instantly. A grading system could be a great help, not only for the students but also for the school administration for the enhancement of the school’s grade recording system. ...Tutor: Date: Introduction 1 to 5 grading scale is a new grading scale that has been introduced in different parts of the world. However, the introduction of this method of grading has introduced a controversy of its usefulness in encouraging student to learn. According to Celia (2013), the grading scale is one of the problems affecting students across different school and different nations in the world. The New Hampshire Department of Education has supervised a state-owned effort to move towards competencies, in which the proponents of this grading strategy have indicated that it is connected to what student can do, and not what student know. According to Bangor Kortum, and Miller (2009), this method of grading attempts to measure and promotes certain areas such as an ability to go along with others and self management. An accreditation body in the United States urged the New England schools to move away from tradition method of accreditation and move towards accepting the new competency based grading. 5-to-1 grading ranges from 1 which stands for students who show no grasp of particular competency. As every grading system has advantages and its disadvantages, this essay focuses of the weakness of 1-5 grading system over 1-6 or A-F grading system (Ozga, 2009). Evaluation of pupils at Primary and Secondary Schools 1-5 grading scale system 1-5 grading scale is the current grading scale used in primary and secondary schools. Grading System

...Introduction The Botswana Star Grading System is used to differentiate the various quality levels of accommodation establishments, it provides judgements on the amenities, facilities and services of particular accommodation in a way that enables travellers to choose the quality of accommodation they want. The system is mandatory for all types of enterprises. The system applies objectivity obtained from the Grading standards and subjectivity obtained from the Grading Criteria. It is the combination of these two documentations that evaluate whether the establishment is fit for purpose as intended, thus ensuring an accommodation establishment qualifies for a Star Grading having achieved an acceptable average score. Our Grading System Grading student work is part of the Teaching Faculty's role and plays an important part in the assessment and evaluative function of teaching. You will assess student progress in your course by collecting evidence of what your students can do. The assignments detailed in your course syllabus will be completed by students and graded by you. These graded assignments (as well as more informal and non-graded assessments) will provide both you and your students with periodic benchmarks and final evaluations of student learning in your course. The required assessments/assignments for your course are delineated in the course guide. Students MUST complete each of these assignments and they cannot be revised. ... 1.1 Background of the study In getting the average of a student, through his/her participation in class, grading system is being used. This is used to provide the equivalent grades of a student. Producing their grade in a shorter time is the top purpose why it’s been develop. This is used to compute the performance of a student, have his/her exact grade within the subject and for the whole grading. Computerized grading system is used to eliminate the word “manual” in our generation. As I study the system of St Cyr Academy, I noticed that they still using manual computations of grades, a calculator to total each student’s grade. Have a slow process of retrieving and releasing of records. On what we have today, many had changed so whatever changes environment brings we should have to mingle into it. Don’t stick to what we usually do, try other things which will make the work much better. In connection to this, I decided to design a computerized grading system for them to align in the modification of the changing environment. Make their work in a fast and easier way. Minimize the effort they exerted and have the desired output they want in a shorter time. Lastly, storing and accessing old data can be done. 1.2 Statement of the problem Encountering a problem is common to us human, but in every problem there’s always a solution. In the system of the school, I’ve seen that it has a slow process of grades. It can’t produce grades in a fast way. It takes time...

...responsibility of developing technologically literate people (Bitter & Legacy, 2008). Both systemic reform and curriculum cannot be achieved without the aid of technology (Fletcher & Wolf, 2007). Grading and reporting are relatively recent phenomena in education. In fact, prior to 1850, grading and reporting were virtually unknown in schools in the United States. Throughout much of the nineteenth century most schools grouped students of all ages and backgrounds together with one teacher in one-room schoolhouses, and few students went beyond elementary studies. The teacher reported students' learning progress orally to parents, usually during visits to students' homes (Guskey). Students are evaluated on academic progress and on quality of citizenship. Report cards are issued every marking period and will be supplemented by interim reports at the mid-point of each marking period. In evaluating the performance of pupils in a given subject area, teachers take into account both oral and written work. In addition, a student evaluation includes unit and/or activity tests, daily written/oral work, homework, projects and/or outside assignments, and final semester examinations in specified courses. (www.sbo.nn.k12.va.us) The aim of the study is to confirm the grading system suitable to accurately provide the student’s academic performance. It also aims to identify the advantages of incorporating a computer program for grade computation. Finally, this study aims to measure the...
