...trials, they are wrong in that assessment. Ninety percent of criminal cases are disposed of by guilty pleas rather than trials. Most of those guilty pleas are the result of agreements between prosecutors and defense attorneys. Plea bargaining is a process in which a prosecutor makes a concession to a defendant (for example, reducing charges or recommending a lighter sentence) in exchange for the defendant's pleading guilty. Even cases that go to trial are sometimes decided before the trial begins. Some experts think that the O.J. Simpson case, for example, was won outside the courtroom through early forensic work by experts and through a legal strategy that forced the prosecution to present its evidence at a preliminary hearing rather than a grand jury proceeding. In the landmark case Gideon v. Wainwright (1963), the U.S. Supreme Court held that the Sixth Amendment guarantees access to qualified counsel, which is fundamental to a fair trial. Gideon was entitled to a retrial because Florida failed to provide him with an attorney. After this decision, states were...

...research I uncovered several similar instances. One such instance involved a homeless single mother named Tanya McDowell. Tanya was arrested for registering her son using her babysitters address. Tanya was charged with first degree larceny and conspiracy to commit first degree larceny. She is facing up to 20 years in prison along with a $15,000 fine to repay educating costs (Khalek, 2011). Tanya McDowell was sentenced to 12 years in prison but the judge suspended 7 years of the sentence. She will serve five years and then another five years on probation (Khalek, 2011). The use of an address fraudulently knowing that you no longer reside at the address was meant to mislead the school that your child was enrolled in. This means that you as the parent made the decision to use an address dishonestly. The charge that you will be facing for this crime will be a state felony charge. Address fraud is a...

...casually. “No time for that baby brother. Listen to me carefully.” “Aw shucks......Stop your big brother lecturing, Jamie. You know how much I hate.....” “Joe. Please. I want you to get out of NY and head straight for the Grand Canyon. Right now. In two hours time.” “You’re joking”, the angry blue eyed youth protested. “You’re time starts now.” And the line went dead... A flaxen haired youth with earphones dangling from his curls got out of his waterfront villa. It had been about two years ago since he and his brother bought that place since the sad demise of their parents, who died in a plane crash. Since then Joe and his brother never flew. But it hurt him more that ever since Jamie became a marine ecologist, he too hardly was there for him. It was as if even Jamie had died in the crash. Today was no different except for that once in a blue moon ring up he received from his zombie brother. But today has antics were most bizarre indeed, unlike the usual taking samples from seas and rivers. Joe pulled out his prize beauty: an Alfa Romeo 678, a gift from Jamie on his sixteenth birthday. Hitting the accelerator, the ashen faced youth zipped past the Bayport Marina. His Gucci watch struck 7:05 am. One hour fifty five minutes to reach the Grand Canyon. Jamie was a maniac- 500 km in two hours. He angrily swept aside one of dangling curls. Now was the worst part. The city traffic. New York was one place Joe loved but today he felt like bombarding the place into smithereens...

...Applying Ethical Frameworks in Practice Dawn M. Biggs Grand Canyon University: Ethical Decision Making in Healthcare March 29, 2015 Applying ethical decision making in the everyday practice in healthcare can be complicated. Healthcare providers must look at both sides of the issue while taking into account what is in the patient’s best interest while at the same time not letting their own opinions and beliefs dictate the decision making process. While one’s own values and ethics can help the process take shape it must never overrule the process and influence the decision. Case Scenario: “A 6-year-old develops a high fever accompanied by violent vomiting and convulsions while at school. The child is rushed to a nearby hospital. The attending physician makes a diagnosis of meningitis and requests permission to initiate treatment from the parents. The child’s parents are divorced. The mother, who is not the biological parent of the child, has primary custody. She is a Christian Scientist who insists that no medical treatment be offered for religious reasons. The biological father, who resides in another state, is also contacted. He insists that treatment be given and seeks independent consultation from another physician” (Ethical Decision Making-Week 3). The ethical dilemma takes shape due to opposing views from the parents in regards to medical treatment of the child. The mom is refusing to give consent for medical treatment due to religious beliefs and the father wants...

...I had always had a desire to go to the Grand Canyon. My brother had always tried to spook me by saying that if you were to go to the canyons in the dead quiet of the night you can see ghosts or, as he calls them spirits, but I knew he was lying. One day my parents surprised me by saying that we were going to the Grand Canyon. I was so excited that I quickly packed my things and off on the highway my parents, brother, and I went. We crossed the border into Colorado. Most of the car ride was silent except for when my brother would, like usual, detest me. On the way to the Grand Canyon my brother was craving ice cream so we stopped and got some. My dad almost got him strawberry ice cream to mess around with him because we all know how much he loathes strawberries....

...strict parents, I did not need to be that far away. With that being said, as of December, my only three options were Central Michigan, Grand Valley, and Grand Rapids Community College. Unfortunately, none of these colleges were perfect. Each of them had their own pros, as well as cons. So it was all down to determining overall which was the best overall choice. Central Michigan was the first school I applied to, and the first school I ever showed interest in. I had a couple friends that had chosen CMU, and had only heard and seen good things. CMU was the first school I visited, and I instantly fell in love. It was a large university, with a rather “tight” campus. Everything on campus is within 15 minutes, which was great to me. The only downsides to CMU was the location and the fact that none of my close friends even considered attending. It is in Mount Pleasant, Michigan, and many of my friends would describe the city as being, “in the middle of nowhere.” The weeks that followed my visit to CMU, I was sure that it was my number one choice. That was until I visited Grand Valley. Grand Valley was 25 minutes max away from home, which meant I could commute or live on campus. All of the living communities were set up much better than what I had seen at CMU, as well as the living conditions. Not only did Grand Valley have nicer residential halls, but they also had more “modern” facilities. Everything was much newer, and the campus looked beautiful and peaceful overall. Grand Valley...

The scenario consist of a 6-year-old who has developed a high fever accompanied by violent vomiting and convulsions while at school. The hospital physician makes a diagnosis of meningitis and requested to begin treatment. The child’s parents are divorced with the mother, who is not the biological parent retaining custody. The child’s biological father requests that treatment be provided and that another independent physician be consulted in regards to the care. The Ethical Dilemma A large responsibility of being a parent to make decisions on how to best care for their children. This encompasses how to best discipline them, what activities they may engage in, what foods they eat, and the medical care they receive. Parents have a duty to assure that the decisions they make take into account what is in the best interest of their child. As medical personnel we are both ethically and legally responsible to advocate for our patients. When a parents decisions may likely cause injury, be abusive, or be derelict it is our duty to address that decision. Medical personnel...

...identify with my Dominican side. I still love the fact that even though Dominicans are Hispanic and we speak somewhat the same language Puerto Rican and Dominicans are so different in the way that we live, eat, raise our children, educated themselves. My father’s upbringing was a very comfortable one due to the fact that my Grand Father was rich. Sugar cane being big on the islands, my Grand Father had many which contributed to the money in our family. My father being the oldest of ten would make you think that he had the most responsibility when in actuality it was the opposite. When my father was 18 he went off to war and was smuggled out of the Dominican Republic into Mexico, he fought for a short period of time. At the end of that time he ended up in New York. In New York, my father was the manager of a dry cleaning business for the rich and the famous, among those Rockefeller was one of his clients. My mother’s upbringing on the other hand was a very poor, very strict one, due to the fact that she was the third oldest of seven children. My Grand Father on my mother’s side was a mechanic while my Grand Mother was a homemaker, so because my Grand Mother didn’t work that contributed to my mother’s poor upbringing. On a family visit to New York, my mother lied about her age to get a job in the dry cleaners my father managed in order to help out...

...The Effects Parents Have on Early Childhood Education Grand Canyon University: UNV501 January 8, 2014 The Effects Parents Have on Early Childhood Education Berger, E. (1999). Supporting parents with two essential understandings: attachment and brain development. Early Childhood Education Journal, 26(4), 267-270. Early childhood development begins as an infant. A parent should love and have supportive interaction with their child to enhance the development. A child learns more and is willing to engage more when they are shown love. Attachment from the parents allows brain development. This article has been in the peer-reviewed process which is a collection of scholars. Martinez-Pons, M. (2002). Parental influences on children’s academic self-regulatory development. Theory Into Practice, 41(2), 126. Parents play a tremendous part in early childhood development. Parents are social models for their children which can begin children’s self-regulatory development. Children learn by observing their parents and/or siblings which allows them to be models. If the parents are unsure of how to promote self-regulatory development they can be taught how to enable their children goals. ...lot of scenes. If you were to ask someone what they thought about the movie sin city many would say that it had a lot of violence and sex. When I was younger I went to go see that I was about to turn 15 and wow that movie had a lot of stuff in it. I believe they should have more strict rules about children and teenagers seeing those kinds of movies and television shows. Today many children and teenagers are allowed to see movies that are rated R as long as their parents or guardian are present. Honestly that should not be allowed period. There are many things children shouldn’t see and two of those things are sex and violence. If their raised in a bad environment and their allowed to see stuff like that that could in fact affect them in the long run. There have been many people I know influenced by movies that become very bad people doing all types of wrongs. Now in today’s generation television shows aren’t as bad as the movies but some if not most still have sex and violence and most of them. Now parents have a little more control now than they did back then due to the parental controls most cable companies provide. Though there are some people who just don’t care about what their children watch. Many shows that I know would affect a child would be the walking dead, sons of anarchy, and the breaking bad. I mean really The breaking bad is about a person who cooks meth, the walking dead is about zombies and for sure would give children nightmares, and the sons of anarchy...
