...performance. In this case, the main difficulty is the performance appraisal which was directly tied to salary increases given at the end of the year. The graphic rating forms which were used to evaluate clerical staff were not efficient as these forms never gave the true evaluation of performance. So, to change the faulty performance appraisal system two Sweetwater experts gave their recommendations to solve the problem. The first recommendation was not to use graphic rating forms as this rating method did not provide any clear picture about the good or bad performance. The second recommendation was not to force administrators to arbitrarily rate at least half their secretaries as something less than excellent. The recommendations given by the experts were good and made sense but these recommendations created problems like efficacy of any graphic rating forms if it is compared to the original forced ranking approach used by Rob and what should be the basis of performance appraisal. ANALYSIS OF THE CASE: The job of Rob Winchester was to completely change the performance rating system of the university because the previous system was dealing with high staff turnover ratio and also the process didn’t look just. The initial performance appraisal form was filled by administrators. Administrators had to rate their secretaries on the basis of work they have done. The problem with this form was that every administrator used to rate their secretary as excellent so as to avoid...

...arrangements and providing you with graphics and work processing support, (3) providing administrative support for the other four members of the research branch. Although Sue has 15 years of secretarial and administrative experience her performance has been described as less than stellar for the last six months, and specifically over the last month has been unsatisfactory. Sue is chronically behind on the branch’s budget and not able to complete it without repeated help, travel arrangements are not always in line with the workshop schedules, workshop materials are not arranged in proper order, and she’s routinely needs help with any graphics that are not identical to what she was exposed to in training. These issues are complicated, or perhaps created, by the fact that Sue’s personal life can be distracting. The other four competent members of the branch are frustrated with Sue, feel drained by her constant need for assistance, and need to focus more on their own projects and job responsibilities. Sue does appear to recognize the importance of the completion of each task as she puts in a full eight hours day, sometimes with overtime, and is not afraid to ask for help when she needs it. Since it is explained in the case that Sue is very good at following clear instructions and completing tasks she has experience with one solution that may help improve Sue’s, and the efficiency of the entire branch, is to provide detailed chronological work instructions for some of her responsibilities...

...25 Ideas To Improve Your Workplace by ADL Associate Barbara Glanz, CSP Study after study has shown that what workers want from their jobs in the year 2000 is not better benefits or more money. Rather, it is the small things that make workers feel commitment to an organization. One study shows the top three things workers want are interesting work, full appreciation for the work they do, and a feeling of being in on things . Baxter Labs recently did a global study in which they asked their employees worldwide what they could do to make things better for them. The resounding answer was that employees wanted to be "respected as whole human beings with a life outside of work." What seems critical, then, in workplaces today is for leaders to respond to workers as HUMAN BEINGS and to foster an atmosphere that is inclusive, caring, creative, appreciative and joyful. People are looking for a deeper sense of meaning and purpose in their work, and above all, they want to be respected and valued. In my book CARE Packages for the Workplace-Dozens of Little Things You Can Do to Regenerate Spirit at Work (McGraw-Hill 1996), I have used the acronym CARE as the elements of a spirited workplace: C = Creative Communication A = Atmosphere and Appreciation for All R = Respect and Reason for Being E = Empathy and Enthusiasm In each of the chapters I have included dozens of mostly no-cost or low cost ideas which can be implemented almost immediately in today's workplaces to engender a new...

...VA Branch – Update In recent weeks, I have received few complaints from few of our top clients in the Virginia region. The quality of work that comes from Roanoke, Virginia branch is affecting the Phoenix branch in a very negative way. For some reason, in the past three months, we have lost the key personnel which that have had been with the company for more than five years. This is why the work quality sharply declined and what followed next - the complaints from the clients. What is scaring me even more is that three of our top graphic designers and four of the copywriters are threatening to leave if we do not improve the way we handle new accounts without evaluating the current workload. We must address this issue as it is costing our company’s valued staff and profits. Robert Wright – Please contact the President of Word Company to find out what the problem is and how we can fix it. Susan Smith – Please call a meeting your graphic design team to find out why the quality of work is declining. Also, Robert and Susan, please evaluate the new client list to see if there is a need to shift some of the work to other branches in the short term. Please send me a full report by August 8, 2014 via email. It is very essential that we maintain a positive and professional relationship with both our clients and employees. ...Personal Work Priorities and Professional Development | | Short Answer Questions Question 1 - Build downtime into your schedule. When you plan your week, make it a point to schedule time with your family and friends, and activities that help you recharge. - Get moving. It's hard to make time for exercise when you have a jam-packed schedule, but it may ultimately help you get more done by boosting your energy level and ability to concentrate. - Remember that a little relaxation goes a long way. Don't assume that you need to make big changes to bring more balance to your life. Brooks recommends setting realistic goals, like leaving the office earlier 1 night per week. Question 2 - Organize & Prioritize Create a daily schedule and follow it. Identify the top three or four critical projects that need to be completed. Ensure your task list is manageable, adds value, and benefits your firm. - Stop Multitasking Guilty as charged! In the past I’ve been a master multitasker, or so I thought. I could answer a phone call, respond to an email, and dabble on a project simultaneously. I was satisfied that I could work on several projects at once. In reality, the quality of my work was compromised. Multitasking lowers IQ, lowers EQ (emotional intelligence), slows you down, increases stress levels, and causes mistakes. Master unitasking instead. - Avoid Distractions Did you know that focus is a fundamental quality of productive people? Our brains are wired to work best...

...have to address all of the main variables possible with proper project management. Project Management Project Management is the application of knowledge, skills, tools, and techniques to achieve specific targets within specified budget and time line constraints (Laudon, 2011). Within project management are these variables required for us to manage in order for us to complete a task like this successfully. The first variable that we must understand completely is the Scope, which defines the work that is or is not included in a project (Laudon, 2011). Understanding the scope is understanding what work will be required for the goal which is the proper implementation and function of the new CRM by upgrading the current IS infrastructure by replacing if necessary equipment that is deemed non-functional, obsolete, or incompatible with current operational standards or need’s for competitive interaction on the global digital markets. This scope would also include understanding the physical work that will be needed to complete the goal successfully through calculating the time required to complete the project. Project management typically establishes the amount of time required to complete major components of a project. Each of these components is further broken...
