... and occupies 11.46% of the world’s land size. But I am not simply talking about the land mass of Russia – there seems to be the idea that “big is beautiful.” If you take a walk around the cities of Saint Petersburg or Moscow, you will find many areas that are populated with a smaller number of large buildings rather than many smaller buildings. During our first tour of the city of Moscow, the tour guide was constantly pointing out the size of different buildings as highlights – the biggest toy store, the biggest bookstore in the world, the biggest skyscraper, the biggest cathedral, etc. Every single time, the first characteristic of the buildings or locations that would be emphasized would be related to size, rather than anything else, such as the history of the place or its cultural significance. When we visited the Kremlin in Moscow, we saw two extremely large objects – the Tsar Cannon, weighing in at 44 tons, and the Tsar Bell, the heaviest bell in the world at 200 tons. Ironically, both objects were so large that they were never utilized; they were simply an idea that could never be fully realized. Nevertheless, the tour guide spoke with great enthusiasm as she told us about the history of these two colossal objects. However, it is not just the tour guides who proudly talk about size – regular Russian citizens feel as excited when given the chance. When I talked with Alex and Valerie, two recent Russian graduates I met at the CIEE trivia night, I asked them about what places...

...[YOUR LAST NAME] 1 [YOUR NAME] [PROFESSOR’S NAME] [COURSE NAME] [DATE] Classical Sculpture Classical sculpture did not appear from nothing; its genesis was not that of Athena’s birth from the head of Zeus, but a rather more sedate process. The roots of classical sculpture are, surprisingly, to be found in Egypt. The Egyptians had highly developed sculpture, most of which had religious implications, as can be seen by the hieroglyphic inscriptions on many of the pieces (Wilkinson, 34-37). Subjects of sculptures included the numerous gods and goddesses of the Egyptian pantheon, pharoahs (who were considered divine) and slaves and other figures created for inclusion in burials; these sculptures, along with real items (e.g., chariots) would become part of the deceased’s “estate” in the afterlife (ibid., 64). The majority of Egyptian sculptures were all in the same style, regardless of whether they represented an animal-headed god, a king, or a scribe. The typical pose was frontal and standing, with the arms hanging close to the body, the hands with clenched fists, the left foot slightly advanced, and an ambiguous facial expression. It must be noted that this “typical Egyptian style” is much more a product of the Egyptian belief system and its associated symbology than the artistic imagination or technical competence of Egyptian artisans (ibid., [YOUR LAST NAME] 2 88). The influence of this Egyptian style can be seen on some of the earliest Greek sculptures, particularly those of...

...and moved in Eastern regions of Russia. Central planning was also effective during WW2 as by 1942, 56% of the USSR’s national income was devoted to the war; this was a much high figure in comparison than Britain, Germany and America. The production of armament almost doubled between the year of 1941 and 1944, this was remarkable achievement to say a large amount of Russian territory was in German hands already. At the start of the war, Germany looked like an unstoppable force. Hitler’s ability to actually guide the war seemed inadequate as he rose to power and this led to failures. His decision to declare war on the USSR whilst already fighting a war against Britain was risky. Germany also launched an offence called Operation Barbarossa, which was launched later than anticipated which resulted in Germany being unable to reach Moscow before the Russian winter; they were unprepared for the conditions that faced them. Additionally, Hitler decided the lay Leningrad and Moscow under siege, instead of taking them by force, which prolonged the war which gave the USSR time to develop a counter offence which was successful. Finally, Hitler sent troops to...

...On December 31, 1999, Boris Yeltsin stepped down as president, marking the beginning of a period of immense change in Russia (“Vladimir Putin”). When Yelstin resigned, Russia was in a state of political and economic turmoil. Vladimir Putin was put into power and he immediately began the struggle of trying to rehabilitate Russia. Putin offered stability and gave the confused country direction and structure. He diligently worked at reducing the concerns and problems presented in the early years after the fall of Communism such as corruption, economic strife and improved foreign relations. His way of leading Russia became a new form of government in and of itself: a unique intermediate leadership between Western style democracy and Communist leadership. Putin found a way to combine ideals of both in a way that was most beneficial for the majority of Russia. Putin’s ideals for Russia offer an extreme change in economy, moving away from the outdated state controlled government and current oligarch system, and towards economic self-sufficiency. When Putin inherited the country from Yelstin, the economy was incredibly unstable. The 1998 financial crisis, the lowest economic point in Russia history, was only one year prior to Putin taking office. In 1999 the gross domestic product (GDP) of Russia was at a record low of $125 million. (“Russian Economy”) In perspective, The United States GDP in 1999 was over nine billion. Under the Putin administration, the GDP more than doubled, putting...

...Jack Daniel’s International Strategy: By sticking to Its Homespun, Down-Home Story, the Tennessee Sour Mash Whiskey Has Increased Sales at Home and Abroad In the United States Jack Daniel sales showed no growth in the 80s and 90s; the only growth was for premium and superpremium whisky (Pearce and Robinson 2009). The company realized that generation X & Y did not have the same taste as the baby boomers; therefore, they need to change their strategies. Jack Daniel came up with a strategy to target younger crowds who surprisingly preferred the premium taste of Jack Daniel in overseas markets. In order to implement their strategies Jack Daniel had to conduct an internal and external assessment of the company. Although the company had already been selling whisky globally, their assessment would be in how to reach a younger audience before entering the niche market. Jack Daniel needed to assess their internal factors such as advertising and marketing strategies for targeting youth in other countries. For example, sponsoring concert events and placing ads that would attract the Chinese or London’s youth. External factors that Jack Daniel needed to assess were where they were planning on placing these marketing ads and how will their whiskey reach youth in other countries. Jack Daniel has a super strong brand story that has proven to overcome any overseas backlash. The whisky story comes from small town USA; giving them visual advantage of how Whisky should be made. Marketing...

...EDUCATIONAL PSYCHOLOGY: A DEFINITION AND KEY CONCEPTS It seems too simple to say that educational psychology is the psychology of learning and teaching, and yet a majority of educational psychologists spend their time studying ways to describe and improve learning and teaching. After reviewing the historical literature in educational psychology, Glover and Ronning (1987, p. 14) suggested that educational psychology includes topics that span human development, individual differences, measurement, learning, and motivation and is both a data-driven and a theory-driven discipline. Thus, our definition of educational psychology is the application of psychology and psychological methods to the study of development, learning, motivation, instruction, assessment, and related issues that influence the interaction of teaching and learning. This definition is broad because the potential applications of educational psychology to the learning process are immense! Today educational psychology is a vital discipline that is contributing to the education of teachers and learners. For example, Jerome Bruner, an enduring figure in educational psychology, recently noted the need to rethink our ideas of development, teaching, and learning and the interactions among them. Specifically, Bruner (1996) urged educators and psychologists to see children as thinkers, and stated: No less than the adult, the child is thought of as holding more or less coherent "theories" not only about the world but about...

...The Glazounov Saxophone Concerto Alexander Konstantinovich Glazounov was a Russian composer, music teacher and conductor. He was born in St. Petersburg in 1865 to his book-publisher father and pianist mother, from the start it would seem that his life was already in motion to being a musical one. Glazounov met Rimsky-Korsakov (famous for orchestral works such as Scheherazade), at a young age and was inspired to begin study at the piano at the age of nine and began composing works at the young age of 11. By the age of 16 Glazounov had composed the first of nine symphonies all under the direction of Mily Balakirev, who at the time was a famous Russian Empire pianist (naxos) it was premiered on March 29th, 1882. Throughout his life he ran into several famous composers that further influenced his compositions, from Franz Liszt to Wagner (Oxford) Alexander was able to even show his gratitude by showing their influence in his works. Glazounov was an internationally known composer whose reverberations were felt throughout the world and more specifically Russian Romantic period. Alexander Glazounov received honorary Doctor of Music degrees from the universities of Oxford and Cambridge Later in life, Glazounov found himself in Paris. During his stay he was inspired by the sounds of the French Guard, or Garde Républicaine, which was filled with saxophones at the time, the rich sounds of the ensemble sparked his creativity and the end result was his Saxophone Concerto. Glazounov’s Concerto...

...Name: Instructor: Course: Date: Rapid Project Development Introduction Rapid project development is a software development methodology which uses less planning to favor prototyping; this planning is reached in writing the software itself which will allow it to be faster and easy for requirements changes because of lack of pre-planning in the software. The powerful case software should be available for the developers to come with the system faster because it will enable developers to come up with the best system irrespective of programming language and the cording system. The product should be produced within less time so that it can be tested by the users i.e. the prototype should be designed fully and produced within short time for the users to use it first if it can help their organization to the maximum level or not. If not they have to return the system to the developers to start working on it again. This system started around 1970 and it’s still used today because of its special lifecycle where we had planning, analysis, design, building testing and deploying to the users. The rapid project development should be compressed and also another lifecycle should be followed before providing it for the users to start using it in their organization or business premises firstly the developers should give what they require to the organization or the customer who needs to make the project for them to make the budget after which the developers should design the project...
