...Guy Fawkes was born in York on the 13 April 1570. A protestant by birth, he became a Roman Catholic after the marriage of his widowed mother to a man of Catholic background. In 1593 he enlisted in the Spanish Army in Flanders and in 1596 participated in the capture of the city of Calais by the Spanish in their war with Henry IV of France. He became implicated with Thomas Winter and Robert Catesby and others in the Gunpowder Plot to blow up Parliament, as a protest against the anti-Roman Catholic laws and was known to be Britain’s greatest conspirators. We celebrate every 5th of November by throwing a doll replica of Guy Fawkes onto the bonfire to commemorate his failure to blow up the Houses of Parliament. But did he actually attempt to blow up Parliament and James I? Is it right for us to disrespect him every year by burning a replica of him? Is he Guilty or Innocent? We do know that James’ chief minister, Robert Cecil, the Earl of Salisbury, hated Catholics and saw them as a constant source of trouble. Cecil also feared that there was a chance that James would be lenient with them during his reign and this he could not tolerate. Cecil wanted to remove Catholicism from England as he saw it as a threat. We know that James was terrified of a violent death; his childhood in Scotland had been fraught with danger including being kidnapped as a boy. What better way to get James to severely persecute the Catholics in England than to get him to believe that they had tried to kill...

...attended the Dishman Gallery on the Lamar campus and found a piece of art that I thought would be good for this paper. The artist’s name is William F. Witherington, born in London, England 1785. The piece I would like to talk about is called Guy Fawkes Day, which is an oil painting. Oil was the main type of medium that most artists were using during the time frame of William F. Witherington. The romantic period had just started in the beginning of the 1800s. You can see how this reflects in the painting by the use of oil as the medium and the way he tries to make the people and surroundings look realistic. He uses warm colors in the center of the piece and lighter colors around the center and a blue cool color for the sky. The name of this artwork is Guy Fawkes Day which is a holiday celebrated in England. A man named Guy Fawkes was arrested for guarding explosives that were meant to kill King James I. This day was made to celebrate the failure of the attempt to kill the king. In the painting you see a man in the middle that is being cheered and praised, but it is definitely not the king. Is this the man Guy Fawke? Maybe William Witherington is trying to say that the people actually wanted the king to die and he is showing this by having Guy Fawke praised in the street of his painting. On the other hand, could this be the man that stopped the assassination attempt. The use of line is easy to spot in this painting. Men, women, and children point in the direction of the man in the...

...It is the year 2020. A virus runs wild in the world, most Americans are dead, and Britain is ruled by a fascist dictator who promises security but not freedom. One man stands against him, the man named V, who moves through London like a wraith despite the desperate efforts of the police. He wears a mask showing the face of Guy Fawkes, who in 1605 tried to blow up the houses of Parliament. On Nov. 5, the eve of Guy Fawkes Day, British schoolchildren for centuries have started bonfires to burn Fawkes in effigy. On this eve in 2020, V saves a young TV reporter named Evey from rape at the hands of the police, forces her to join him, and makes a busy night of it by blowing up the Old Bailey courtrooms. "V for Vendetta" will follow his exploits for the next 12 months, until the night when he has vowed to strike a crushing blow against the dictatorship. We see a police state that hold citizens in an iron grip and yet is humiliated by a single man who seems impervious. The state tries to suppress knowledge of his deeds -- to spin a plausible explanation for the destruction of the Old Bailey, for example. But V commandeers the national television network to claim authorship of his deed....

...myths. Commonly used symbols such as crucifixion or the snake serve as a marker to delve deeper into the reading. Carl Jung, whose theory of a “collective unconscious”, has been accredited with founding this school of literary criticism. This Jungian theory claims literature imitates the “dream of humanity”, not life. Archetypal criticism splinters from the Formalist or New Criticism schools of literary criticism by approaching the work in the context it is read in, instead of holding it aloof from other texts. Archetypal images, sounds, and symbols are used in all areas of the humanities and are tied to our fundamental thinking patterns (Delahoyde). Before the first line of the poem, the line “A penny for the Old Guy” (Eliot 79), is the first reference to Guy Fawkes Day, the English holiday where a celebration is held every 5th of November due to the thwarting...

...vital as it keeps them on their toes, careful not to do things that are questionable, corrupt or immoral. Moreover, through the course of humankind it is blatant that such heavy influencers on the norms have a tendency to exploit their position, expressing their own untested and subjective opinions, values and ideas as truths. This is exemplified in James McTeigue’s film “V for Vendetta”, where the government, ruled by High chancellor Suttler is riddled by corruption, immoral values and based on acts of discrimination against anyone who is regarded “undesirable”. It is only when V goes against the grain with “...the power of ideas...” is hope given to the people to rebel, and become face-less behind a mask, to carry on the great legacy of Guy Fawkes. Who knows how long this could’ve continued if the mainstream was not challenged by V? as such government had already exploited its power to such limits creating a status quo that was unreasonable and simply absurd. Hence, rebellion is vital, as without it blind acts of conformity to horrific behaviours such as carried that carried out by Suttler and by those in...

...ideas to live on. Once he gets all of London to follow his idea, he knows his idea will be bulletproof and it will live on through everyone he touched. V was a victim of a government ran epidemic. The government was experimenting on London natives trying to find a substance to make a super soldier who held a cure and use a illness to be a devastating chemical warfare weapon. V actually held the cure and he was the super soldier the government was trying to make. The whole laboratory went up in flames and burned down unfortunately, but karma helped with that. V then went into hiding for years until his plan was complete and ready to put into action. The date he chose was The 5th of November, this date was important because a man named Guy Fawkes tried to blow up the House of Parliament. V's plan was also to blow Parliament up and free all of London from their fearful lives after he took revenge on everyone that was a part...

...Michael Bennett Page 1 Dr. Alla Boldina ENG 110-60 REVOLUTION AND ROMANCE Creedy: “Why won’t you die!?” V: “Beneath this mask is more than flesh…there are ideas. And ideas are bulletproof.” With these words, the film, “V for Vendetta” dramatically demonstrates the power of ideas to challenge and overcome the evil of oppression. In film critic Robert Ebert’s review of “V for Vendetta,” he notes the power of ideas, especially the belief that people should not be afraid of their governments, but rather that governments should be afraid of their people. Although Ebert questions the necessity of fear, and believes that governments and people should be able to happily co-exist, I think he trivializes the significance of the film’s message. Although it is an in-depth, well written look at the story, it is one-sided. He gives credit to a novel written by Allen Moore in 1983, on which the film is based, and compares “V for Vendetta” to other movies and stories. The main character, V, is described in detail, and Ebert explains his purpose in the story. The other characters, however, are not mentioned very much, leaving the reader a bit blank. I appreciate that he mentions the main idea of the film, and is generous with quotations. I do fin d his criticism a bit excessive, as he puts down the mask that V wears because the lips don’t move and his vision would be obstructed. Ebert seems biased on behalf of London’s architecture, as he expresses his disappointment...

...deeper. The movie is based around the idea of social change and revolution. The main character, V, can only be considered a ‘terrorist’ despite the well meaning he has behind his actions. This movie has fans in great numbers due to our ability to relate with V. His charisma shows through making him seemingly charming and dramatic. The movie is a symbol of rebellion, the possibility of a simple idea changing the world. As I watched the movie, a theme of terrorism seemed to arise. V is made to be likable yet he is doing anti government actions and behaving in a way that we would usually be more resilient against and brutal towards. The idea that V is fighting against an all-controlling government helps us accept that V is technically a good guy, fighting for freedom like the United States. Another common theme throughout the film is lies and deception. The government shields the truth from the public, even though they know it couldn’t possibly be true. For example, when they lie about the blowing up of the statue in the beginning. The government continues to lie about the state of danger the country is in by showing inaccurate news reports of officers shooting their own peers who happened to be dressed like V, but the government portrays the fallen officer as V, himself. The use of lies in the story line only continues when V takes Evey by false imprisonment. V portrays himself as the government, as he beats her, tortures her, and convinces her to fall in love with someone she...

...We Can Forget Again The commercials for the popular line of Axe body sprays are entertaining, to say the least. With just a few sprays of this female attractant in a can, women no longer have control of themselves, they are hungry and you’re for dinner. Now there’s a new line of shower gels for the guy who women can’t resist. It makes sense because, dealing with the countless hordes of women does tend to make one sweaty. So the creators of Axe have created a product that the modern day chick magnet can’t do without. The extended uncut ad has a guy waking up face down on his front lawn. He then proceeds to groggily get up and hit the shower, seemingly not remembering a thing about the night before. And then, all of a sudden, after using Axe Shower Gel, he has a flashback to a pool party. After waking from the pool party, he heads to the shower, gets cleaned up and is ready for more excitement. This time around, he ends up at what looks like a wanna be honky tonk, where of course the hottest girl in the place has her eye on him alone. They proceed to get away in either a motel room or her place, and end up doing what any young guy and girl do when alone in a room. Which is try on these huge animal heads one after another, and then act out certain scenarios such as whoever had the horse head on got to be rode as one. Page 1 Once again, he wakes up and has no recollection of the previous night. He washes with Axe Shower Gel and gets...

...getting my meal, there was a huge commotion coming from the back of the lunch room. It turns out it was someone’s birthday; gifts were being given and everyone was singing “Happy Birthday”. There were some usual party things being passed around, such as: party hats, cake, confetti poppers, etc., and some unusual things such as, little stick-on handle bar mustaches. By now everyone is having a jolly good time and I’m being only semi-awkward. Then this kid starts making everyone laugh, his personality was one in which you can’t help but like the guy. This was Ian, I remember him being a pretty tall guy, he had glasses, and the start of facial hair. He started gathering all of the left over party hats and attached them to his head. It started off with one on his forehead, another on the back of his head, and one on each of his ears. This continued until his whole head was covered in party hats! I remember thinking to myself, “Man this guy is crazy!” This was my introduction to Ian. Fast forward a few years and you’ll find the two of us playing horror games in his house. The games themselves range from Slenderman to Outlast to Silent Hill and many others. Horror games alone are enjoyable, but the reactions the both of us have are the really exciting parts! For example, we were playing Outlast, probably around one a.m. and became so scared that...

Then they will never speak again. THE KID THAT NO-ONE LIKES This kid is a jerk! And for arguments sake let’s call him “DANNY.” You desperately want to punch him in his ear, but he’s disabled. And because he disabled he makes sure to make EVERYONE mad. This kid will sometime attempt to befriend you then manage to say or do something so unspeakably rude or offer some sort of backwards compliment. Parties disassemble whenever this guy manages to find his way to one. Generally (but not always) white, he awkwardly uses the words Dog, Crib, Homie, Phat, G, or Ill. If he spots you, he’ll ask you to “peep this new track yo,” or attempt to sell you tickets to his concert.
