...Composition February 2, 2008 Summary DAVE BARRY Guys vs. Men Dave Barry’s insight in Guys vs. Men begins to explore the world of the male figure. Barry touches base on a few things that he believes separates guys and men apart. Barry first mentions that “Guys Like Neat Stuff” and begins to explain that guys enjoy things that are unnecessary to have and perhaps a bit over the top but they are things that make them happy and keep them entertained. Barry then moves into talking about how “Guys Like A Really Pointless Challenge”. Barry mentions that guys often engage in activities that are beyond what should be the standard rational of middle aged men. His thoughts on how “Guys Do Not Have A Well-Defined Moral Code” briefly delves into how guys know that they are expected to perform and act a certain way, yet they often completely disregard these ideas held by others on how they should act, not on purpose but just because they are in fact guys. The last thing Barry brings up is that “Guys Are Not Great At Communicating Their Intimate Feelings, Assuming They Have Any”. Barry presents the idea that guys tend to keep personal issues, just that, personal. Guys generally keep answers to questions they don’t want to answer brief at best, and the only time they share how they feel is most often when in the company of another guy friend. Dave Barry’s Guys vs. Men is a funny, interesting and seemingly true effort at explaining who guys really are, and why they are that...

...GUYS VS. MEN DAVE BARRY Dave Barry (b. 1947) is a syndicated columnist for the Miami Herald, where he won a Pulitzer Prize for commentary in 1988. He is the author of twenty-three humor books, including Dave Barry's Complete Guide to Guys (1995), the introduction of which is included here. Despite its title, "Guys vs. Men" is not a comparative study of these two basic types of males. Men and manhood have been written about far too much already, says Barry. But guys and guyhood are neglected topics, and even though he "can't define exactly what it means to be a guy," Barry's essay lays out "certain guy characteristics" that distinguish his quarry from other warm-blooded animals in the field. ______________________________________________________________________________ This is a book about guys. It's not a book about men. There are already way too many books about men, and most of them are way too serious. Men itself is a serious word, not to mention manhood and manly. Such words make being male sound like a very important activity, as opposed to what it primarily consists of, namely, possessing a set of minor and frequently unreliable organs. But men tend to attach great significance to Manhood. This results in certain characteristically masculine, by which I mean stupid, behavioral patterns that can produce unfortunate results such as violent crime, war, spitting, and ice hockey. These things have given males a bad name. And the "Men's Movement," which is...

...2016 Dave Barry's essay “Guys vs. Men” was about how “Men” has more negative qualities unlike “Guy” which shows that a guy can be indulge in stereotypical characterization. He mentions different mindsets between a male “Guy” and “Men”. He talks about how moral battles between women and men. How male “Men” introduced a new stupidity like war, violence, dangerous sports ect. He said that there this book is not about men and manhood, there are too many books already about men, that his book was what its like to be a guy. He states how guys tend to not have deep intimate conversations about their feelings. Also, how guys are simple creatures and not feel the need to live up to this higher expectation of what a man needs to be. His essay basically explained how a guys do things together and then upgrade just to follow the same pattern. “So i'm saying that there is another way to look at males: not as aggressive mach dominators; not sensitive, liberated, hugging drummers; but as guys”(915) I chose this quote because I felt that it was more of a thesis and that it drags the reader to keep reading. Passage #1: “When they are being just plain guys, 1.they aren't so much actively evil as they are lost”(Barry 907) Guys aren't so much actively evil as they are lost, when they are being just plain guys. When guys are being themselves they aren't evil but they are mostly confused as they come off to be. Passage #2 “[…] 1.guys who consider themselves to be...

...Dale Peterman Reading response 1 “Guys vs. Men” After reading this I would have to agree with him completely. I think that every scenario he used sounds like something I would do. And I am unfortunately 100% a guy. This was a very interesting article to read. One part that I thought was hilarious was the part when he was talking about running the 40 yard dash in the office and he challenged his co-worker. I can relate to this so much because I have a family full of athletes and we have been challenging each other for years in every category of sports. I want to say first off running a 5.77 is extremely slow at any age. But I can just imagine my family members (which are all guys) challenging me to a foot race and actually going outside and doing it. He said guys will take small challenges and that is extremely true. I and my family will argue about who is the best at video games because that just what guys do. But on the other hand I have a few uncles who would never waste their time to sit down and play a video game. Because that isn’t something that men usually do. He also mention that men are more serious than guys which is very true my uncle usually doesn’t talk but when he does he means business I would categorize my uncle as a man. But when he said that guys cheat I would have to disagree with him on that simply because I feel like I do all the things that he would consider a guys does but at the same time I have never cheated on...

...obsessed with how their bodies look like; having the idea that the right body is supposed to be skinny, boys having the need to build muscles, and how others look down upon those who looks different. Today, girls have the urge to be skinny because of the models being used to sell specific items from brand name clothing companies, such as Victoria Secret, Hollister, Areopostale, and more. The only way to get customers is to use attractive girls with big breast and “sexy” bodies to sell their items. For example, Victoria’s Secret is a place where people can purchase bras, panties, sleepwear, and cosmetics. These VS models are known as “Angels”. It makes society view that real angels look like them, that they are higher and better than the rest. But these models just don’t get female’s attention. They also draw in guy’s attention. These models sells sex which makes guys want their girlfriends to get what the models are wearing. Girls see...

...Anna Richey Opinion Editorial Dating vs. Hanging Out I met a guy in my class the other day and after some small talk we finished with “lets hang out tonight.” That same night a friend of mine introduced me to someone and that person called me the next night and set up a date for that weekend. Obviously the second person was ready to take action and had the courage to ask me out. There is a difference between dating and hanging out and both girls and boys value dating. Dating and hanging out are two completely different things. Young Adults need to stop replacing dating with hanging out and bring back the value of dating. The way my brother, Daniel met his fiancé is a perfect example of Dating. Dan is 27 and had just gone through a bad break up with the girl he thought he was supposed to marry. He had met up for conference with his friends where they discussed all their plans and trips for the summer. In the April session of General Conference, they stressed to young single adults of the need to date, find their eternal companion, and get married. After listening to the counsel of the prophet his summer plans changed very quickly. He decided to attend every FHE, Young Single Adult Activity, Dance etc and ask out a couple girls a week. He took out one particular girl named Tiffany to Airborne Trampoline Center in Draper, Utah. He noticed the blonde cashier on his way out and started talking with her (his date wasn’t with him). The rest was history; they are getting married...

...“Get out and wait for security”. Without hesitation Leonard exited the car, where he was met by two security guards that escorted him into the Psychiatric Centre. One of the guards stopped to talk to the woman at front desk, the other one escorted Leonard through a hallway with fluorescent lighting. Faint noises could be heard that were suddenly drowned out by the sounds of screams. At least Leonard was still walking. The guards pushed Leonard into a medium-sized room. Two men appeared, staring directly at Leonard. “Wait here, I’ll be back” the security guard hurriedly closed the door. The place went quiet. Seconds went by before one of the men broke the silent with a tired...

...will always play with their dolls. Teenage boys will always play with a football while teenage girls talk on the phone for hours. Men will always watch professional sports while women will still be talking on the phone for hours. Now is this just a stereotype or is this indeed a fact of life? Are guys truly more aggressive? Are women really more nurturing? You better believe it! Gender differences are real and they are simply more than just a serotype. “Boys will be boys” because their brain tells them to be, not because our society does. “Testosterone plays a huge role in aggression testosterone is the primary male sex hormone produced by the testicles. The male is said to produce forty to sixty times the testosterone then women. The University of Wisconsin did a study in which the researchers injected testosterone into unborn female monkeys. Once these females were born they did not nurture or groom their children they acted like male monkeys and began to become more violent and very aggressive.”(York) from that experiment we learn that once the testosterone level was raised in the female monkeys, they acted out more like male monkeys. Thus proving that the higher testosterone level the more aggressive the person would be. And as stated before men produce forty to sixty times more testosterone then women. This is a primary cause in aggression in men, they are not aggressive n because they are told they are to be aggressive by society, but because...

Being in this unfamiliar environment, I questioned myself about the education I received, the stereotypes I had in mind about Hochelaga-Maisonneuve, etc. I thought I would not like to see men wrestle and in the end I had a great night. From my three hours around that ring, I made something very strange to me more familiar. I concluded that the event has for objective to entertain the public while giving them more freedom (drinking, interacting with the wrestlers, etc.) than a regular performance (cinema,...

...later call ‘five ladyfinger firecracker’ which led to the ‘explosion’ of Fahrenheit 451.” (Weller 199) The story takes place in the 20th century with no specific year given where two nuclear wars had taken place since 1990. Ray was inspired by the events taking place at the time such as the rise of Nazi Germany, McCarthyism and the “witch hunt set out by the House Un-American Activities Committee in Hollywood in 1947…” (Weller 199) In addition to the setting, a few, but not all of the characters from Fahrenheit were influenced by certain events from Ray’s life. On a windy autumn night in Los Angeles, Ray had been out on a walk with a friend of his, when “A police car wheeled up beside them. The officer stepped out and approached the two men. He asked what they were doing” (Weller 199) in which Ray responded, “Putting one foot in front of the other… breathing the air, talking, conversing, walking” (Weller 199) The officer was displeased with Ray’s response, seeing him as a smart-ass. The office told to not do it again, went back to his patrol car and drove off. Once Ray got home, he wrote “The Pedestrian” in which the story tells of a future where walking was illegal and all pedestrians where treated like criminals and how...
