...Egg cup holder   First of all, I clamped the acrylic in a bench vice with two pieces of wood either side of it just to make sure it would not scratch the acrylic. The acrylic that I used was rough around the edges so using  flat file I Cross filed to get rid of any saw cuts and draw filed it to get rid of any scratches made from the cross filing until the scratches were gone all around. I then got wet and dry paper and used grade 1200, 600 and 400 grits to make the surface finish smooth and shiny, it also gets rid of any dirt and grain left after the filing from the edges. I slowly brushed my fingers across the edges to see if the surface finish was smooth I left the protective plastic on the acrylic so I could mark out the centre of the 4 sided shape, then I used the pillar drill to cut out the circle on the Acrylic.   Health and safety is very important in the making stages so I made sure I was wearing my apron and goggles so I could protect my clothes from any spillages such as the water from wet and dry and also protect my face from any bits of acrylic or wood chips that could fly out during the drilling. After the drilling, I used a template to mark out where I needed to bend the acrylic to actually form the shape off an egg cup holder. I used a strip heater to bend the acrylic, I placed the piece of acrylic on the heater where I marked out the line and kept flipping the piece of acrylic every few seconds so the acrylic didn’t melt. I quickly removed the acrylic and...

Experiencing the Arts

... 2013). This is a pretty good explanation of what the arts is. To elaborate on this statement, I believe that the arts are a communication with another person whether it is verbal or nonverbal. It is the way that you perceive the artwork and how it makes you feel at the time. It can show different cultural methods that help influence what we are today. Art is included in everything that we own whether it is a table or a painting. It is something that somebody thought of and shaped it into something of beauty for the owner to relate to. Or if you cannot own the type of art that you are witnessing it is something to feel and perceive in your way. I recently made a bookcase for my granddaughter. I wanted her to appreciate the craft of woodworking and all of the thought process that went into crafting this item for her. Besides the history of it coming from family, it also has all the perceptions of a well-crafted piece of furniture. First I had to decide what type of wood that I wanted to work with. I chose elderberry because of all the variations of the wood pattern and wood grain that it shows when it is varnished. I handpicked the lumber so I could get the right contour and the right flow of the wood grain in the pieces, so they complemented each other in the finished product. I hand- crafted all of the pieces without using nails or screws or power tools. I added a hand carved rose to the top of the bookcase to add to the simplicity of it. I used a basic 18th-century plan so...

Strategy Essay

...taken on board this strategy moving forward. Grace started out in the 1966 as a contract manufacturer of etched steel parts, such as printers. They had developed a proprietary process for making precise steel shapes, which meant the edges of the steel being razor sharp and patented the process. However, sharpness was a liability and workers had to be careful handling the parts. With the emergence of dot matrix printers in the 1980’s, they realised their cash cow business was under threat and so looked into different areas. Grace didn’t take the natural progression to looking at adjacent areas such as dot matrix printers or other high volume complex machine pieces. Instead they realised they were good at making things sharp, so went into woodworking tools and developed the microplane in 1985. Grace had some success with the woodwork tools but in 1995 a new product category opened up for them when they discovered chefs were using the microplanes for grating and shaving. Apparently in 1994, Canadian Lorraine Lee was frustrated with her zester and grabbed a microplane her husband bought and used it on an orange. Her husband owned Lee Valley Tools that sold the microplane, so she changed the product description in their catalogue. Chefs bought them and loved them, with this the...

Nt1330 Unit 7 Analysis

...“Micron-7” is capable of defining position for the first cut. For that you need to: 1. using the buttons for lifting-lowering the saw move it approximately near the place of the first cut (the lower indicator will show the distance between saw and table). 2. using keyboard type-in the thickness of all the requested boards in order from top downward. As example of the described above, we will enter: 50 2 40 25 2 After that, the upper indicator will show the sum of enterer thickness of all the boards with allowance for the sawing kerfs and the saw will move to the coordinate of the first cut. 3. perform the cut; 4. lift the saw above the cut (the upper indicator will show the thickness of the next board), return the saw frame to the initial position; 5. press . The saw will move to the position of the next cut. Repeat from the position 3. It is difficult to do a mental tally of how much boards you will receive from a log and the thickness of that boards. In the process of entering the list, every time you press « » the upper indicator will show the sum of thickness of all the boards with allowance for the sawing kerfs. You can add to the system only the boards with the total thickness less than 500 mm . By correlating this sum with the saw coordinate (showed on the lower indicator) you can decide how much boards you can add to the list and how thick that boards can be. Setting the saw on the defined coordinate (distance from table to saw). By coordinate it is...

...We have been in our new house just over a year and last spring we were so busy working on the inside that I did not have time to even think about the yard. But now with the inside somewhat complete, we can now focus on the outside. First up- creating a vegetable/fruit garden. I picked the back corner of the yard which receives full sun but is not directly in your line of sight when you look outside from the house. My original plan involved putting a short fence around it to keep pups out but after examining the soil we had to change our plans. The soil in that spot is incredibly sandy, which is odd since in this area we have a lot of clay. So we think an old playset used to be back there and they dumped sand for the kids. So our options became either digging up all the sand and getting rid of it somehow or building raised beds. We chose option B. Obviously it was not a very difficult decision. But we were gardening and raised bed virgins so some research was in order. We learned we had a lot of options in terms of materials- Stone/brick-too expensive and too permanent in case our adventures in vegetable gardening do not go as well as we hope Landscape Timbers- cheap but very we unsure what wood they we actually made of and how they would hold up Cedar-pretty, resists rot, can do it ourselves but still expensive if making multiple beds Pressure-Treated-cheap, easy to use but conflicting info about it's use for food gardens. From what I have gathered from my...

...Dwarika’s Story The history of The Dwarika’s Hotel is intertwined with the life and times of its founder, Dwarika Das Shrestha. Dwarika Das Shrestha was an extraordinary human being – a true visionary who was acutely aware of his own identity, the changing world around him and his responsibility towards it. His story is one of inspiration borne out of struggle and torment, the relentless pursuit of an aesthetic ideal, and one man’s determination to make a difference. Early beginnings Being born into a relatively affluent Newar family, Dwarika Das Shrestha was sent to school in India at the tender age of six. With less than one percent of the Nepali population being literate, in the early 1950s, as Nepal took its first steps towards democracy, it was ill equipped to face the challenges of modernisation. It stood at a position where it could neither fully embrace the dramatic changes that modernity brought, nor fully comprehend the value and potential of its ancient cultural heritage. Dwarika Das Shrestha completed his education with a degree in law and commerce in the early 1950s, and returned to Nepal with the dream of helping Nepal regain its past glory. His first business was the establishment of the first hotel in Nepal, Paras Hotel, in 1952, at a time when Nepal was yet to establish itself as a tourist destination. The hotel’s primary patrons were Indian and Nepali pilgrims who came to visit the Pashupati Temple. Back then, charging religious pilgrims for shelter was considered...

How To Make Woodworker Jigs

... Tapered legs are used by woodworkers to build tables, chairs and various other projects. Cutting tapers on legs is a simple procedure that includes using a table saw and a plywood jig. When you make different sizes for different legs, you can hang the jigs on the wall and then they will be available for future projects. Porch Ceiling Case Study

...Roof Framing Ridge Beam: For the ridge beam we used a 2”x6”x8' and attached five ridge rafter connectors to each side. Starting at the front we placed these at 2”, 24”,48”, 72”, and 93”. Hurricane Ties: We then set the ridge beam on top of each side wall, and nailed the hurricane ties to the side walls, aligning them with the center of the ridge rafters. The ridge beam overhang by 1 1/2 inch at the front and back wall. This was where the information from our helpful lumber store employee came in handy. Porch Ceiling: For the porch ceiling we cut a 4'x8' sheet of tongue and groove sheathing in half, lengthwise, and set half the sheet, groove side down flush with the front posts and over the front wall, notching out for each of the hurricane ties. We then secured the sheathing to the wall plates. Front and Rear Ridge Support Posts: From a 2”x4” post, we cut a 17 7/8” piece for the front ridge support post. This was attached to center of the porch ceiling, flush with the front edge, using a 2”x4” fence bracket. To the top of edge of the post, flush with the front, we attached a 2”x 6” fence bracket. The rear support post was cut 18 1/2” and attached to the center of the rear wall plate in the same way as the front support post, with a fence bracket attached to the top. Fastening the Ridge Beam:We then set the ridge beam in the fence brackets on top of the support posts with the rafter ties up. With the beam overhanging the posts 2” in front and 1” in back we secured...

Two Tramps in Mud Time

...Two Tramps in a Mud Time Analysis When initially reading “Two Tramps in Mud Time” it can be looked at as two incongruent poems. Some of the stanzas have no connection to the stanzas before them or following them. One of the two possible poems viewed; the narrator seems narcissistic and focused on oneself. The second poem within “Two Tramps in Mud Time”, the narrator turns to the power and beauty of nature that the reader can relate to. In the final sections of the poem the narrator reveals his deep thoughts to the reader which brings the poem back together as a single whole poem, not disharmonious two separate poems. In the first two stanzas of the poem the narrator focuses on oneself by using me, my or I distinctively. The lines “Out of the mud two strangers came/ And caught me splitting wood in the yard, / And one of them put me off my aim/ By hailing cheerily “Hit them hard!”” makes the narrator sound arrogant and shows that he is annoyed by the two tramps showing up unexpectedly and interfering with his wood chopping (1-4). By the phrases “caught me splitting wood in the yard” and “put me off my aim” makes the narrator sound superficial and what he is doing is above what the two tramps were doing or were about to do. The narrator then immediately jumps to negative conclusions that the tramps wanted to steal his job: “I knew pretty well what he had in mind: / He wanted to take my job for pay” (7-8). “My job” adds to the arrogant narrator because he is classifying his pleasure...

The Craftsmanship of Jamaican Woodwork

...THE CRAFTSMANSHIP OF JAMAICAN WOODWORK Submitted May 2, 2010 Amended September 28, 2013 Michaelia Henry ID No. 0210073 M.Arch 1 Course: Critical Theories in Architecture Lecturer: Arch. Jacquiann Lawton Critical Theories in Architecture: Modernity Exploring Research Methodology – Writing Dialectical History Thesis Statement Craftsmanship is the basic human impulse to do a job well for its own sake. It involves Creative Thought, Precision, Apprenticeship, Crafting an Object Well, adhering to The Structure of the Workshop and the Practice of the Intelligent Hand. Contemporary Jamaican Woodcraft is an example of Craftsmanship. Introduction Fashioning furniture, doors, windows and other architectural elements out of timber is an old practice. Before the industrial period, many of these items would be crafted by hand. The effort and care taken to create each piece; seen in the final product. This is one way of romanticizing traditional woodwork. A more cynical view would be to criticize the minor imperfections of these pieces – the uneven pattern created by carving by hand, the lack of perfect symmetry in the manmade spindle form. This cynical view has some validity – if; the priority of making the object is the actualization of perfection. Social commentators like Richard Sennett believe this kind of priority misses the true point of Craftsmanship – the desire to do something well for its own sake. I agree. The actualization of Craftsmanship is not about the making a perfect object...
