...important goal in life or is it just selfish? I once was told that the average person thinks about happiness at least twice a day. It's only 9pm and I can already tell you that I've been happy and unhappy many times today. If I asked a group of people what they wanted most out of their lives for themselves or their family, whether for tomorrow or the rest of your life, most people would say happiness. Some might say money, but only because they think money will make them happy. Yes, money can buy things that will provide you with brief happiness, but for true happiness, I believe, you have to be focused on it for the majority of your life. Aristotle once said, "Human happiness is so important it transcends all other worldly considerations." If the meaning of life was to be completely one hundred percent happy; forget about all your goals and plans, the only thing you have to attempt to do is to be happy: happy in your life, your relationships, your family, your home, your job... but then of course you would only have a job and a family because they make you happy by providing money, a social group and companionship. It is interesting that seeking personal satisfaction in every aspect of our lives seems unrealistic. Isn’t that what life is about? We are on this Earth for a finite amount of time, time which we can never regain no matter how hard we try & for no amount of money. Each moment that slips by is another moment gone. Why should we accept our lives the way they are...

...seminars have been written explaining what it is to be ‘happy’ and ‘how you get there.’ As stated in the United States Constitution we are given “unalienable rights among them life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” Happiness is something we as humans are entitled to and guaranteed as a right. Something so fundamental should be easy to come by, yet everywhere you turn there are signs and tips on how to be ‘A Happier person.’ Happiness, by definition is a state of being, not a destination. It is an essence that many people work so hard to define, capture and achieve, all the while jeopardizing the true state of being happy. For some, happiness is the sunshine on their face as they curl up in their favorite chair on the beach sipping a cold drink. For others it is a baby’s smile, or their first paycheck. As people go through their different stages of life they have different definitions of happiness and different means of being happy and achieving happiness. Happy is a state of mind and a temporary place, not an end goal or destination as many people feel happiness is. So many times people feel like if they could only lose those last 10 pounds, or get promoted, or watch their team win the Superbowl then is when they will be happy. Once happiness is achieved, then what? Do people move on to the next ‘happiness’ or are they just satisfied that happiness was achieved and go on living their lives never worrying about being happy again? “Disneyland is the Happiest Place on Earth...

...About Sharing Happiness We can only share happiness with others when we ourselves know how to be happy and are happy. If we are not happy (it means we don't know how to be happy), then how can we share happiness with others and ask others to be happy, when we don't have happiness in ourselves? We can share our joy and happiness with all beings without any discrimination of human beings or non-human beings, good beings or bad beings, happy beings or unhappy beings, wise beings or ignorant beings, but we cannot give happiness to others nor can we make other beings to become happy. If one can give happiness to others or can make another being to become happy, then there shouldn't be any beings being unhappy in the world, because we can just give happiness to everyone and make everyone happy. But it doesn't work like that. Not even Buddha nor any enlightened beings can make another being to become happy or to become enlightened. If it is so easy, we can just ask for happiness or enlightenment and be happy forever and be enlightened. It is all come from within ourselves. Happiness or enlightenment, it is up to our own efforts to realize them within ourselves. It cannot be given or be bought from someone else. All the teachers and teachings are there to guide us to attain true happiness and enlightenment by our own effort. When beings are unhappy, have no peace in the heart, the mind is full of attachment, ignorance, anger, hatred, jealousy, arrogance, dissatisfaction, frustration...

...true happiness is the friendships that people make in life and the family that they spend their time with, because whether they are poor or rich, it hardly makes any difference if they have no one to spend time with doing things. Also, the happiest people in the world are some of the simplest people, and they are familiar with what makes them happy. The general argument made by Eduardo Porter’s essay “What Happiness Is”, is that “citizens of much the world – expand large amounts of time and energy pursuing more money and a bigger GDP because they think it will improve their well-being” (461). He cites...

...It is very well known today that: neither men nor women are in a hurry to get married. Women have now become more independent, they do not want to do all housework and raise their children, or sacrificing their career growth, is one of the causes of the changes in family formation. A happy marriage may be built only on love, tolerance, mutual understanding, equality, and respect. The problem is important because both husband and wife are now in many cases on equal terms. More and more women demonstrate higher levels of education than men, more and more women compete with men, holding leadership positions in business, politics and social life. Now a lot of women are the financial support to the family. As the result, women become materially independent. They are not materially tied to a family anymore. When they get married, they enrich their world that is now built on kinship, love, safety, quality leisure time activities in which all family members are involved. A family develops a collective feeling of interconnectedness, which is opposed to loneliness. Joy and duty, love and care, discipline and kindness - all these are taken together in a family as a pillar of stable social development. I have talked to married people in search of a "happy family" recipe. I want to share some of my findings with you. A happy marriage is based on intimacy and commitment. It is a bond that outgrows passion as the feature of romantic love. It is a bond that is based on mutual respect and...

Short term memory and long term memory. Episodic memory is the of memory of specific events. Short term memory causes your pre-frontal lobe to be very active. The brain remembers positive and negative information in two different hemispheres of the brain. Negative emotions generally require more thinking than positive information. My problem was, does the human brain remember sad events or happy events more? I was interested in this...

...Most of the time, humans try to plan out lifestyles to make their future enjoyable. Many people look for jobs, places, or activities that will make them happy. In the essay, “Does Trying to Be Happy Make Us Unhappy?” by Adam Grant, we are shown that trying to be happy actually makes us unhappy. For the most part this is true because, we spent too much time searching, we are critical, and other experiences can make us feel like we need to aim higher. Overall, Grant’s essay explains about how we search too much for happiness. There is a story in the essay about a man named Tom who moves often and studies at different college, but he still could not find his happiness. The theory behind this is that we spend way too much time searching instead...

...Achieving Happiness Achieving Happiness Being “Happy” is a mental or emotional state of well-being characterized by positive or pleasant emotions raging from contentment to intense joy described on a dictionary. I often ask myself what makes me happy? Is it having fun? Is it being just happy stress free? Having a family? Maybe it is being rich, intelligent, and good looking? Or is it when you have good position on a job with a title such Manager, Supervisor, or maybe being the President of a major company or corporation? We all were happy and sad in life. We had lost lives, faith, hopes, and the list goes on and on. Each individual has different set of views when it comes to this issue of being happy because for me personally at this time of uncertainty; I would probably be happy if I achieve a goal or a dream such graduating from a university then hired for a job that guarantees a life safety. But, sometimes it difficult to figure out what we have to do in life to attain happiness. We would agree that the majority of people around the glove have a happy life, if not life would be a misery. Then why people commit suicide? I had known couple people in my family and friends that committed suicide. It is an experience you simply can’t forget as you feel their pain, anger and regrets when you hear their stories. But why they had to take their precious life? It is a question I ask myself on daily basis since I am not happy or satisfy with my current stage of life; however I...

...Phenomenological Reflection Paper Phenomenology of Happiness What can make one person happy might not have the same effect on another. With this, it is difficult to find the perfect recipe for happiness. However what is true is that happiness is the one thing that people do not tire of. We continue searching for happiness even if we know that we will eventually tire of what provides it, and we will have to search all over again. For thousands of years, human behaviour has largely been about and driven by the pursuit of happiness. Even if we have not yet understood its complete nature up to now, we still continuously look for it. This unending pursuit is an evidence of how important happiness is to us. Happiness is a positive feeling and it is quite contagious. On the surface, it can be defined by a heartfelt laugh, a smiling face, or even a touching tear. Often times when we hear laughter, we associate it with happiness Whether you know the person who is laughing or not, you know that person’s laughter is a very strong indication of his or her happiness. This is also true when we see a smile, or when we witness tears of joy. It is often hard not to be at least quite affected by the happiness of another person. A person who is dear to you may express his happiness through stories that he will tell you and you in turn will be glad for him, and possibly for few moments, you may even forget your own worries and just join him in this feeling of elation. An old couple sitting...

...10 Things Happy People Do Differently 10 strategies happy people incorporate into their lives Published on October 16, 2012 by Paula Davis-Laack, J.D., M.A.P.P. in Pressure Proof Happiness is having a large, caring, close-knit family in another city. George Burns How happy are you and why? This is a question I spend a fair amount of time thinking about, not only as it applies to my own levels of happiness, but also as it applies to my family, friends, and the people who I work with. Since graduating with my master’s degree in positive psychology, I’ve worked with and observed thousands of people in a wide variety of settings, and happy people just flow with the groove of life in a unique way. Here is what they do differently: 1) They build a strong social fabric. Happy people stay connected to their families, neighbors, places of worship, and communities. These strong connections act as a buffer to depression and create strong, meaningful connections. The rate of depression has increased dramatically in the last 50-75 years. The World Health Organization predicts that by 2020, depression will be the second leading cause of mortality in the world, impacting nearly one-third of all adults (Murray & Lopez, 1996). While several forces are likely behind this increase, one of the most important factors may be the disconnection from people and their families and communities.
