...Health Economics and Health Policy A critique of the methods used to measure and value health in cost-effectiveness studies submitted to NICE. Introduction The responsibility to provide data concerning “Good value for money” in regards to a new treatment or healthcare programme intervention has for itself a remarkable relevance. However, this information has become much more important in recent years due to the fact that we are facing a combination of unprecedented demand with the limitation of resources and the necessity of making decisions regarding priority setting in the healthcare system. Priority setting in healthcare means to determine what is most important in the context of finite resources as well as to decide who is going to benefit from a particular health care service as giving priority to one group of people inexorably implies taking it away from another one. (William, 1998). Nowadays, health care systems are facing the problem of how to set priorities in the allocation of health care resources in order to provide a high quality of care to those who need it and at a cost their governments can afford. All this happens in a time when people have greatest expectations concerning the care they should receive and the health care innovation offers broader options for interventions. (Littlejohns et al, 2012). In England the NHS has the obligation to provide a comprehensive and fair service for all and at the same time to promote an equal...

Johnson University of Texas at Arlington College of Nursing In partial fulfillment of the requirements of N5327 Analysis of Theories in Nursing Ronda Mintz-Binder, RN, MN, DNP March 10, 2014 Effects of Humor and Laughter on Healing in Adults with Illness: A Multidisciplinary Concept Analysis The stressors of illness, together with the stressors of everyday life, can challenge the coping mechanisms of all patients. The relationship between humor and health dates back to the bible: “A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones” (Proverbs 17:22, New International Version). Research across many disciplines has shown humor to be an important tool in facilitating these coping skills Humor is an integral part of everyday life and, therefore, also a component of the care and treatment of patients in the modern health care system. The purpose of this paper is to examine and analyze the concept of humor along with laughter in the healthcare arena as well as serve as a vehicle in providing a clearer understanding of the thought and its therapeutic value in nursing. Review of Literature Don’t forget to summarize here!!!! Nursing Discipline A quantitative study was conducted by Astedt-Kurki & Liukkonen (1994) to illustrate the occurrence and meaning of humor in the nursing process, as described and experienced by professional...

...A. The vendor selection process is preceded by, and is also guided by a cost-benefit analysis. related to the positive impacts of the proposed action(s) are quantified and added together, and all the negatives are similarly noted. The difference between the two is assessed and its significance will help to determine whether the planned action is advisable. In the case of the healthcare organization the cost-benefit analysis will help in deciding whether to upgrade to an electronic health record system or remain paper-based. A request for information is usually made to obtain information on the products and/or services for which a proposal may eventually be made. This includes information on vendors who can meet certain requirements for delivery of formal services and products. A request for a proposal seeks to obtain definitive requirements for portions of or all of a project as identified and is specifically related to the procurement of services and/or products required to implement the project. A request for proposal might be preferred to the request for information because it contains details of the project, and also requests the cost of goods and services inclusive of timelines, required to complete the project. Bothe the request for information and the request for proposal are often required to provide details of exactly what is to be accomplished and hold performers accountable for the outcome of the project. This includes both internal and external stakeholders...

...Quality Improvement Techniques in a Healthcare Setting !2 ! There is a great need to improve on the quality of healthcare we are providing to patients and it is a necessity to improve on patents safety also. Quality health care is defined as the degree to which health services for individuals and populations increase the likelihood of desired health outcomes and are consistent with current professional knowledge (Chassin, 2006). According to the Institute of Medicine, To Err Is Human, the majority of medical errors result from defective systems and procedures, not individuals. Processes that are ineffective and flexible, changing case mix of patients, health insurance, differences in provider education and experience, and numerous other factors contribute to the difficulty of health care. With this in mind, today’s health care industry functions at a lower level than it can and should, and it put forth the following six aims of health care: effective, safe, patient-centered, timely, efficient, and equitable (Ferlie, 2005). The aims of effectiveness and safety are targeted through various processes that will measure whether providers of health care perform processes that have been demonstrated to achieve the desired aims and avoid those processes that are given toward maltreatment. The goals of measuring health care quality are to determine the effects of health care on desired outcomes and to assess the degree to which health care follows the process based on scientific evidence...

...Public Health Nursing Vol. 22 No. 4, pp. 354—359 0737-1209/05 # Blackwell Publishing, Inc. SPECIAL FEATURES: PRACTICE CONCEPTS The Child Welfare System: Through the Eyes of Public Health Nurses Janet U. Schneiderman ABSTRACT Objective: This qualitative descriptive study investigates how public health nurses working within the child welfare system view the organization and the organizationÕs effect on their case management practice. Design: Semistructured interviews were conducted utilizing the Bolman—Deal Organizational Model. This model identifies four frames of an organization: symbolic, human resources, political, and structural. Sample: A purposive sample of nine nurses and one social worker was selected to participate in comprehensive interviews. Results: Data analysis identified two main themes. The first theme was the presence of organizational structural barriers to providing case management. The second theme was the lack of political influence by the nurses to change the structure of the organization; hence, their skills could be more completely utilized. Conclusions: Public health nurses who work in child welfare will need to systematically analyze their role within the organization and understand how to work in Òhost settings.Ó Nursing educators need to prepare public health nurses to work in non-health care settings by teaching organizational analysis. Key words: child protective services, organization, public health nursing. The purpose of this exploratory qualitative...
