...outs of a pyramid that was supposed to guide my dietary habits and ultimately lead me to a healthy lifestyle. This life tool (known as the food pyramid) showed me how many servings of grains, fruit, vegetables, meat, milk, and sugars I should consume daily. Even now I know that I am supposed to eat oils, sweets, and fats sparingly, and have three to five servings of vegetables each day. A year after engraining these numbers into my brain, I learned that all of my studying was in vain. During my eighth grade year the USDA introduced a new online program called MyPyramid. That program was only used for five years, and in 2010 (before I had even graduated from high school) the USDA slightly modified their food patterns. This is when the new MyPyramid was shaped into the newer and “better” MyPlate. My mind was bewildered as to how there could be so much change in an area that should have remained constant throughout one’s life. I began to wonder to myself “Are the current guides actually helping us, and should we be following them?” In order for the food guides to help us they should be more focused on three things: scientific basis, consistency, and personalization towards the individuals following the guides. The USDA has debated on the topic of nutritional foods and guidelines for the last century. This national debate started when Wilbur Olin Atwater (the first to create a dietary guideline by the USDA) published a bulletin titled “Foods, Nutritive Value, and Cost” in 1894. Atwater’s...

...people, weight loss is a challenge. This writer continues to struggle to lose weight, but recently lost 35 pounds from healthy eating and exercising. To achieve and maintain a healthy weight requires a lifestyle change of healthy eating and exercise, and for those with medical problems they may need to turn to other another method for assistance, like my friend Sarah who chose gastric bypass surgery. Healthy eating and exercise and gastric bypass surgery have similarities and differences but both will help in the success of weight loss. Lifestyle changes, healthy eating with portion control, exercise, and medical guidelines are some of the similarities and difference that aide in these two methods of weight loss. With healthy eating and exercise, and gastric bypass surgery a person needs motivation and the need to make lifestyle changes in order for them to succeed in weight loss. There are obstacles a person taking gastric bypass surgery as a method of weight loss needs to go through to accomplish their weight loss goal, and remain healthy. Gastric bypass surgery requires physician’s instruction and nutritional guidance in order to accomplish a lifestyle change. Consulting a doctor for a guide to what to do before and after surgery is beneficial to the person considering gastric bypass surgery because there are many behaviors one must do post-surgery. Eating behaviors need to be changed post gastric bypass surgery; chewing their food excessively until it is mush, taking small...

The Public Needs to know Our goal is to improve the nutrition and health in breakfast and lunch programs in schools today. The children need better choices in eating healthy. We have to change our budgeting around in order to meet the heath needs. Our kids are worth more than anything so we should show them that by putting their health first in our budget. Everyone is looking for the easy way out. We can be healthy as well as cost effective at the same time. There are special needs for our children and they come with guidelines. As (Kennedy & Cooney , 2001) mentioned, “It just makes good sense to me to save lives and preserve the healthy babies through the use of sound nutritional supplementation, rather than pay later. ...L. (1979). Food and People. New York: Wiley. Schlosser, Eric (2001). Fast Food Nation: The Darker Side of the All American Meal. New York: Houghton Mifflin. The overall pattern of food that a person eats is more important to a healthy diet than focusing on single foods or individual nutrients, according to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics in its newly updated position paper "Total Diet Approach to Healthy Eating." According to the position paper: "In contrast to the total diet approach, classification of specific foods as 'good' or 'bad' is overly simplistic and may foster unhealthy eating behaviors." The Academy's position paper stresses that moderation, portion size and exercise are the key concepts for balancing food and beverage intakes. The position paper has been published in the February Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and can be found on the Academy's website. It states: It is the position of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics that the total diet or overall pattern of food eaten is the most important focus of healthy eating. All foods can fit within this pattern, if consumed in moderation with appropriate portion size and combined with physical activity. The Academy strives to communicate healthy eating messages that emphasize a balance of food and beverages within energy needs, rather than any one food or meal. The Academy's position...

When a child is overweight for his or her age and height they are considered to be obese; obesity is troubling because those extra pounds leads to a path of other health issues like high blood pressure, diabetes, and high cholesterol. Childhood obesity can also lead a child to depression and low self-esteem. Mayo Clinic (2009) says, “The best strategy to reduce childhood obesity is to improve the diet and exercise habits of your entire family.” When not active you do not burn calories like you should, and most kids and adults today do a lot of watching TV, playing video games, and sitting behind a computer all day, these things contributes to weight gain. ...necessity, but to eat intelligently is an art” ” Francois de La Rochefoucauld (1613 – 1680). Eating is necessary in order to live; but to eat with knowledge is a talent in it self. Unhealthy eating is one of the fastest growing health risks today. Obesity is a contributing factor which leads to many deadly illnesses and is spreading throughout the nation. There is a way to stop this killer and healthy eating is the cure. Healthful Eating will help one to live longer and give one the confidence needed in knowing that body is at its best. Making small changes in every day eating habits will enable people to move forward towards a healthier body and lifestyle. It is important that we eat healthily. To do this we have to have what is called “a diet.” To have a healthy diet, we have to make sure we eat the right kinds of foods. Nutritious foods are very beneficial; nutrients help us to grow, keep our bodies in good repair, and help us to stay fit and active. Healthful foods provide necessary nutrients to our body. Nutrients are a key factor to obtain energy so our muscles work properly, our brain remains active and our hearts continue to beat. Furthermore, “nutrients help build and strengthen bones, muscles, and tendons and regulate body processes, such as blood pressure” (WebMD 2005-2008). Living longer is what most people strive for. For countless people, it is a struggle to succeed at eating healthy. For others, this success comes naturally. “By committing to eat healthier, one will reduce...

...points to include in a public nutrition program? Provide current literature to support your answer and include two nutritional education community resources. The acronym SAD has been used recently to describe what Americans are eating or the ‘Standard American Diet’. Many Americans are hurting their bodies eating this diet which is high in animal fats and other unhealthy saturated & hydrogenated fats, high in processed foods while being low in fiber, complex carbohydrates and plant-based foods. In the article by AGree, they state address the fact that “while eating a healthy diet is the most effective form of preventive health care; obesity and related health issues from overeating reduce individual's’ quality of life and cost the United States billions in unnecessary healthcare costs. On the other side of the spectrum, food insecurity - and its driver, poverty - rob children of healthy development, and impede working age and elderly Americans’ ability to enjoy productive lives, with potentially long-term, and costly, impacts” (AGree, n.d., pg 1). We are lucky to have a free market with freedom of speech for all advertisers, unfortunately it seems to be the poor food choices that get all the air time with little information being presented about healthy diet choices. Even the United States Department of Agriculture states “About half of all American adults have one or more preventable, diet-related chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and overweight...
