Heroes
After more than 10 years of combat, the media has given many soldiers the title of hero. Jessica Lynch was one Soldier who was given the title hero. Was she truly a hero? What actions merited such a label? Pat Tillman also received the coveted title of hero, despite much controversy. Pat Tillman’s label of heroism occurred because of his strong social status. However, the word hero in Tillman’s case was misused to disguise actual events or cover up the misfortunes of war. Shoshona Johnson would be called a hero as well. Shoshana Johnson and Lynch were captured the same day but because of race, one hero would receive more accolades than the other. These soldiers wanted to share the truth, but media’s opportunity to transform them into hero took precedence. All of these heroes received differential treatment based on their gender, race or social status.
Jessica Lynch seemed to be the perfect candidate to depict as an American Hero. Lynch is 5’6, 130 lbs. with blonde hair and blue eyes (Fluharty). With Barbie doll like qualities, Jessica not only served as an American Soldier, but possessed the beauty necessary to attract attention of viewers and develop a great story. The War on Terrorism has allowed news anchors to televise and participate in more combat related events than ever before, yet truth is often skewed to give a better news line story. The events that led to her capture in Iraq in 2003 were exaggerated from the very beginning. Reports stated that the ambush resulted in “…Jessica Lynch being taken prisoner full of stab wounds and bullet holes, and she was whisked off to a ragged Iraqi hospital and held for eight days by vicious Iraqi guards while being ostensibly abused,..” (Morford). This created a huge stir within the United States.
It was uncommon to see a woman taken captive in combat. Surely, women don’t serve in combat roles in the military and if they did, could they protect themselves from terrorists? These were the exact questions the media wanted to answer in their effort to label Jessica Lynch a hero. As reported by Christopher Taylor, “There were calls for her to be awarded various medals, there was controversy over a woman being in a combat situation, and the media had finally found a hero in the Iraq war; a woman! Only, almost everything that was reported about her turned out to be wrong” (Taylor). The media’s immediate recognition given to Jessica Lynch was based heavily on her gender. Iraq wasn’t a war that had much popularity when it was approved. The twenty-four hour coverage of Iraq did nothing more than remind Americans that we were vulnerable to terrorist attacks. Day after day, reporters would show the collateral damage that occurred from the bomb strikes. There was nothing positive to report on. Once Lynch’s convoy was attacked, reporters would shift from reporting about collateral damage to reporting on the American Soldiers who have been killed, injured and captured. Furthermore, the media was looking for a positive story to spark new attention for viewers. The day to day reporting of combat began to lose its appeal to viewers and only showed American dominance on the battlefield. That is, of course, until a white, blonde haired, blue-eyed female Soldier transformed the headlines and was ideal candidate to be labeled the next generation’s hero for females. The opportunity Lynch provided for the media was just the break the media were looking for. This story could inspire other females to serve in the military and would furthermore balance the gap of male and female equality within their perspective combat roles. However, Jessica Lynch wouldn’t participate with media and never accepted the coveted title hero that was given to her. Jessica Lynch stated in front of Congress, “… I did not fight to the end and don’t need to be labeled a hero. There were real heroes that fought to the end that day, but I was not one of them. Why the media made such stories about me is unknown (WVPB)”. Jessica Lynch wanted to tell the truth and didn’t want to discredit her fallen soldiers by predicating false claims for her own gain or status. There is more to honor than being a male or female; honor should be solely based on merit and gender should not play a role for any qualification.
What is the definition of a hero? This definition is ever changing and truly resides in the eye of the beholder. The media attempts to define who is and is not a hero because they have the power of choice when running the tape. If television viewers regularly accept what is put on television then why should the media attempt to make a change? Many television networks conduct approval rating tests randomly to see if they are meeting the intent of the audience. This approval rating allows the news reporters to report what the viewer’s want to see. As long as whites are the majority, more white characters will be on television. It keeps the television ratings high, but takes away from a true heroes often times because of their race. Shoshona Johnson is a perfect example of how media separates heroes by race. Johnson was captured the same day as Lynch, but many may have never known that. How could Johnson be less of a hero than Jessica Lynch? Jessica Lynch, as stated above, didn’t want to be categorized a hero, but recognized the need to address others as heroes. Johnson was recognized as a hero, but received far less recognition than Jessica because of her skin color. Johnson is a black woman, who appears slightly overweight and does not have the beautiful qualities that are often displayed in magazines or on television. However, her actions were nothing short of a heroic response. T.D. Allman stated, “Shoshana was more of a hero than Jessica. She fought against the enemy and was shot twice resulting in serious injury. Yet, Jessica received the lucrative book deal, interview with Diane Sawyer and photographs with President Bush. In general, those who voted for President Bush did not support affirmative action, but the truth is Shoshana wasn’t in any of the pictures with Jessica Lynch” (Allman 247). The media had already found the model hero, Jessica Lynch, for the next generation and regardless of Johnson’s actions, she failed to meet the Barbie doll standards that grabbed the attention of viewers. Unfortunately, the media would rather proclaim false evidence to develop a good story then to glorify a true hero because of race.
Pat Tillman is another soldier who received the title hero, but under very different circumstances. He was an extremely well-known football player before he entered the U.S. Army. Many people look at professional athletes as heroes or role models. Pat Tillman had received the title hero because of his ability to play football at the highest level. Tillman may have earned many titles playing football, but he believed that he had not done enough for his country. Pat Tillman stated in an interview, “…family members before me have served in WWII during Pearl Harbor and I really haven’t done a damn thing. I have never laid it all on the line for this country or flag. I have a great deal of respect to those who have” (TGriffin You Tube). Tillman’s statement displays the love for his country and flag. After joining the military, the media followed Pat Tillman extensively until his death in Afghanistan in 2004. Immediately, Gen. Stanley McChrystal would label Pat Tillman a hero when he was announced killed in action (TGriffin You Tube). Because of Pat Tillman’s social stature and his ever-changing hero status the Tillman family wanted more than a few honorable awards and the title of hero being applied to Pat’s name. They wanted the truth about the occurrence of events that led to Pat’s death. Kevin Tillman stated, “…writing a Silver Star award before receiving an eye witness statement, falsifying sworn statement’s…delivering false information at a publicly televised funeral is not an error in judgment but rather an intentional falsehood that fit the highest definition of fraud” (TGriffin You Tube). Even after Pat was able to serve his country honorably his actions did not merit the title hero. Pat Tillman was killed by fratricide (TGriffin You Tube). However, due to the General’s infectious words the media made multiple stories of Pat Tillman that personified his heroism in Afghanistan. This angered the Tillman family. Without the true events of Pat Tillman’s death, how could anyone label him anything other than a Soldier who was killed in Afghanistan? Only when the false evidence was revealed could the hero status be removed. How would the media remove this powerful title that was given to Pat Tillman? They couldn’t and the title remains with Pat Tillman today. Pat Tillman’s social stature was elevated because of his play on the football field. He was followed more extensively than any other Soldier in the 21st century. He personified selfless-service and wanted nothing more than to support his country in time of war. Undoubtedly, his social stature created fear among Officer’s in the US ARMY who had to explain that Pat Tillman’s death was fratricide. This will never take away the service that Pat Tillman gave for this country. However, many will remember that the military falsified documents and fabricated lies to protect his social status. Gender, race and social status should be separated when profiling a hero. Many look for someone to emulate. Within the diverse society that exists within the US, too many are culturally challenged and find themselves pulling for those that are similar to them. Americans are highly competitive and believe that they are the best country in the world. Because of this ego, many want to emulate someone who fits a similar profile to themselves. Many people want to go beyond the barriers and set new limits. By profiling heroes into separate groups the media gives the viewers an opportunity to choose their hero. Heroes are people who have responded to circumstances or situations that most would not. There is no reason to separate one hero from another, in any circumstance. The title hero should not be applied to someone simply because they are beautiful, have the same skin color as the majority rather than the minority or played the game of football extremely well. Merit should be the only basis for someone to receive such a title. To use the word Hero, and then separate it’s title based off of gender, race or social status is absurd. Many do not want to be addressed a hero within the military and serve to sustain freedom. Others throw on military hats with trinkets to be recognized. The title hero always will be in the eyes of the beholders. Let’s just hope all filters are removed when someone receives such a title.

Los Ninos Heroes

...Los Niño’s Heroes Courage is to have the self-fortitude to stand up for what is right. Putting your needs aside and helping for the greater cause. In order to cross a threshold one has to have self- courage along with determination and motivation, following through regardless of the results. Los Niño’s Heroes (The Heroic Children) are a piece of Mexican History that stands out. The date was September 13, 1847 six brave young men fought valiantly for their country during the Mexican-American War. Tragically, they died defending the honor of their country. The ages of these six young men ranged from 13 to 19 years of age. The Mexican-American war was in its final chapter when the Battle of Chapultepec took place. Years preceding the war, Chapultepec Castle had been utilized as Mexico’s military training academy. When the war broke out there were dozens of teenage cadets in attendance. General Nicolas Bravo who was the commander of the forces stationed at Chapultepec Hill apparently saw that the American Forces were quickly advancing and triumphing, so he ordered his men, including the cadets to retreat to safety. The six young men, however, refused to leave their post and bravely meet the superior forces of the Americans. At that point in time is where you see all six of them pass that threshold of, “I must defend my country, my country needs me!” Without a second thought they threw themselves into a battle that they did not need to fight. Never the less, they were...

Mad Men Anti Heroes

...The anti-hero narrative in television has been a major success in recent years. Shows like Dexter (2006-2013), Mad Men (2007-2015), and Breaking Bad(2008-2013) all feature the anti-hero and have been critically acclaimed and loved by viewers in America. Each of these T.V. shows’ success has been measured by user reviews, user ratings, Golden Globe awards and/or nominations, and Emmy awards and/or nominations. By definition, the anti-hero is a central character in a story, movie, or drama who lacks conventional heroic attributes. (Oxford Dictionaries) How then has this hero without heroic attributes been so popular in our culture? The anti-hero has been popular in recent years because viewers can relate to him, are able to perform moral disengagement to enjoy the story, and believe that there is a chance of redemption for him. Audiences love the anti-hero because the writers have created a character that they can relate to and sympathize with. The anti-hero character creates a strong bond with the audience that lets them experience life from their point of view. They are depicted as flawed like everyone else, unlike the traditional hero, who seems more perfect. This initial bond of sympathy for the character keeps the audience interested. In Dexter, the audience can relate to the anti-hero because he appears to be a normal middle aged guy that ends up as a typical family man. When he and his first wife take the step of moving in together he experiences anxiety and doubt...

What exactly is a hero? Well, a hero is a person with strength, courage, and bravery. Heros fight for what is right. Heroes come in many shapes and sizes. Heroes

...different answer from everyone you ask; being a hero means different things to different people. A hero in my eyes, could be a traitor to some one else. It can actually be a very touchy subject to some. An obvious example would be our soldiers, fighting everyday for our freedoms. To most, these men and women are undoubtably heroes. But there was a time not long ago, that soldiers returning from Vietnam were ridiculed, and treated like traitors, because many people didn't believe in the war they were fighting. Does that make them any less a hero? I don't think so, they had no choice in the reasons for war. In the Nation of Islam, many extremists believe that those who are willing to strap themselves down with explosives, and commit suicide in public places, are the greatest form of hero. To me, that just seems absurd. I don't think it takes fighting in a war, or even taking extreme action, to be considered a hero. I like to try to see the hero in everyday people. Any one can be a hero. To me, just reaching out and making a difference in someone's life, is an act of heroism. I'm lucky enough to say that I know some of these heroes. And they have restored my faith in humanity. My friend Jason was paralyzed from the waist down 16 years ago, after a 4-wheeler accident. He was always the cool kid; handsome, smart, always had the nicest cars and prettiest girlfriend. On top of that, he was always a really nice guy, it was like people just gravitated towards...

Heroes

...Do Heroes exist in the present day? Heroes can be found in every person. However, heroes do not have superhuman ability but they do what they do for the greater good. I believe a Hero is someone that shows great strength courage and is willing to fight for justice. A Hero is wise and trustworthy. Heroes not only exist in the past but they exist in the present day as well. People that are part of the judiciary system could be considered modern day heroes, if they don't shoot and kill innocent people. They defend the community from unjust acts, they protect the community from people that steal, people that murder, people that commit fraud, people that kidnap etc. A Hero could even be someone that has authority. Some examples would include a police officer, a teacher, a lawyer, a judge, a psychologist or even a counselor. I believe strongly that a Hero is a person that helps someone even in the face of danger. A psychologist could indeed be someone’s Hero because he/she can make people realize their issues. They could even help solve those issues and helped you become a better person in the process. In conclusion I believe Heroes do in fact exist in the present day; We just don’t recognize them but they are there. Heroes can be found in EVERY person like your best friend, your cousin, your brother, your sister, your uncle, your boyfriend. They might have helped you. For example they could have helped you get out of a fight, helped you control your temper when you lost...

Heroes

...Nicollette Digmi A hero is someone who is brave, trustworthy, and reliable. This is the kind of person we look up to. Some of them may be legendary, while others are everyday life-savers. Heroes are typically on quests often to help others, they are ethical and strong and responsible leaders. A hero could be anyone who has these qualities. Beowulf and Martin Luther King Jr. both meet their criteria because they share the same heroic characteristics: they were both on quests, ethical, strong responsible leaders. Beowulf and Martin Luther King Jr. were both on a quest. For example, in Beowulf, the main character, Beowulf, is on a quest to help Hrothgar save his village by defeating Grendel. This means that Beowulf came from Geatland to save a village even though he wasn’t guaranteed a reward. Similarly, Martin Luther King Jr. was on a quest to stop racism and segregation between white and colored people. For example, he stood up to the white people and makes it as public as possible that he wants to change the way society is for the good of other people. In other words Martin Luther King Jr. and Beowulf share a heroic characteristic in that they both go on quests to create change for the benefit of others. Beowulf and Martin Luther Jr. were also ethical. For example, in Beowulf, Beowulf is a good king to his people and ends up fighting a dragon and dying for his people. This means that he was ethical and it contributed to him being a great hero. Likewise Martin Luther...

...Heroes Many remember when they were little and would see a fire truck go by they would think to their self that’s what I want to do when I get older. Many children when asked what they want to do as a career normally say a firefighter or police officer. There are many reasons to be both, but being a firefighter can be an easy thing to do. There are many career and volunteer fire departments throughout the nation, even some are mixed between career and volunteer. Firefighting is more than a career or job whether it be volunteer or paid it is a calling. Many people would not go into a house that’s on fire, while everyone else is running out. Firefighters are dedicated to helping others and in some cases like today in Massachusetts three firefighters were trapped when a structure collapsed that they were working in to extinguish the fire. They were all rescued after the collapse and two of them made it out with serious injuries and another gave the ultimate sacrifice. Today unfortunately showed the dangers that the job has and how firefighters put their lives on the line every day. Most believe that a firefighter is a hero and most firefighter’s say it is just part of their job, it is proven daily that it is more than a job they are heroes. In the United States there are over 1.1 million volunteer firefighters that is two thirds of all fire fighters. In the nation yearly the amount of emergency calls increase significantly the amount of volunteer firefighters has dropped over...

Why Heroes Are America's Heroes

...There are so many reasons why veterans are America’s heroes, and I will name a few of them. Veterans, first of all, give up their time with their families, they fight in wars, and they die for our freedom. My step-dad, my deceased grandpas, and family friends are all veterans. When veterans signed up, to begin with, in the service. They had to do a lot of training. All of that training took time away from family and friends. They missed birthdays, Christmas, Thanksgiving, children being born, Easter, and so much more. They spend hours upon hours training to protect our country. Another reason Veterans are America’s heroes is because after their training they possibly could fight in wars in different countries. They spend countless...

...Alternatively, should we seek to dispense with heroes? These questions linger in the mind of most critics of heroism and its relevance to the society. For instance, Isaiah Berlin argues that Romanticism towards heroes led to start of fascism (Thompson, 113). Thus, he suggests that due to the conflagration of the Holocaust it is dangerous for any individual to heroize another and a childish refusal to enlightenment and resistance of “essential destiny” of the human nature. Furthermore, Thompson inquires if have we reached a point in our pursuit of autonomy that we need to do away with childish things like heroes (113). Alternatively, should the intense cynicism of the current times protect an inextinguishable need for something better perhaps some hope of a future worth pursuing and heroes to lead us there? For instance, consider a society without a history, or take away the history of the United States, could there be a meaningful thing without histories and histories. Heroes In Beowulf

...There are several elements that define a hero. For example, a hero is a product of time and place, but also transcends time and space. This means that the hero is relevant to the place and time in which the story was created, but also has the power to communicate and connect with people of different cultures and backgrounds today. Heroes must have an emotional connection with the reader and teach a moral value that will leave a lasting imprint on the reader. Various stories of heroes, like Beowulf, are very similar and they all have the same basic elements: personal connection, cultural connection, and universal connection. The universality of heroes and myths are demonstrated through different story elements. To the modern reader, heroes...
