...Chapter 14 Case – “Hewitt-Packard Company” Instructor: Professor Pamela McLaughlin Course: Management of Concepts – BUS 302 Date: August 21, 2011 * Discuss the three most serious problems you have identified in the case. Defend why you think they are the most serious. One of the more serious problems that I have found in this case is under management. When a company is under managed, workers struggle because their management is not sufficiently engaged to provide the direction and support they need. The management is not informed about worker’s needs and, therefore, is unable to help with resources and problem solving. Thus management cannot judge what expectations are reasonable, and cannot set goals and deadlines that are ambitious but still meaningful. Meanwhile, the under-manager gets caught in a vicious downward spiral managing problems after the fact, putting out fires that never should have gotten started in the first place, salvaging wasted resources and turning around employees who have been going in the wrong direction, unnoticed, for days, weeks or months. Secondly, having a bonus system that was so complicated that no one understood it is never good for a company. Bonus systems should be as simple as possible to measure and track. Also a bonus system should be designed to reward good behavior, not necessarily to change or punish poor behavior. Lastly, a complex and confusing matrix structure blurred accountability lines and slowed the decision making...

...Assignment # 2 – “Hewitt-Packard Company” BUS-302 1. Discuss the three most serious problems you have identified in the case. Defend why you think they are the most serious. The three most serious problems identified in the case are the strategic vision, the matrix structure, and the company reward system. The strategic vision of the company was very vague. The strategic vision was “digital, virtual, mobile, and personal. The employees working at Heward-Packard were not sure if the strategic vision was being executed or not. When employees are not sure if the strategic vision is not being executed this can affect the way they do their jobs. The matrix structure was confusing because it blurred accountability lines and slowed decision making. There was a single sales division that reported to four five division heads at once. The company reward system was very complex. Employees working at Heward-Packard were not sure if performances were affecting their bonuses. Employees who are not sure if their performance or the company’s performance affects their bonuses this could employees to become disgruntled. 2. Describe how the company should attempt to correct each of the three most serious problems. In order to correct the strategic vision the CEO needs to define what the strategic vision is. Since the strategic vision is “digital, virtual, mobile, and personal” the employees need to understand how the...

...Assignment # 2 – Chapter 14 Case – “Hewitt-Packard Company” 1. Discuss the three most serious problems you have identified in the case. Defend why you think they are the most serious. When Mark Hurd, the new CEO, took over, he found matrix structures ambiguous, confusing and inefficient. The main reason is that there is no clarity on the roles that each unit in the matrix is intended to play. Unit roles suppose, responsibilities and relationships in a way that is clear, but not excessively detailed and hierarchical. Although the matrix seems to be a logical organizational solution, Fiorina, has not found it an easy structure. She has struggled with ambiguous responsibilities and reporting relationships, been slowed down by the search for consensus decisions, and found it hard to get all the different units to work constructively together. In fact, CEO Carly Fiorina was so preoccupied with immediate issues that she lost sight of her ultimate objectives. Fiorina and her staff consider that the HP Way is an anachronism of a different, slower time, and that for the company to survive and succeed in the future it must be driven purely by a rational business strategy. After all of the layoffs, organizational changes, assertion of executive hierarchies and the destruction of traditional company rules of behavior, the HP Way that the old-timers are fighting to save is probably already dead. Fiorina and her team appear not to believe in the Way, they are now reduced to appealing...

The computer has to hold memory also to save things within computers. The Ram is a major component in saving information but only works when the computer, is running. The reason a Ram is used is to save and store information,so that when it is being worked on it wont be erased. A Computer also has external and internal drives that can read information. When the computer came out for personal use, it made it better for communication possibilities(ceruzzi,6,7) 1939 was an imperative year for computers because that was the year that started it all. David Packard and Bill Hewitt, better known today as the extremely popular computer brand Hewitt-Packard, founded their company in a California garage. “Their first product was the HP 200A Audio Oscillator, which rapidly becomes a popular piece of test equipment for engineers.” It did not take long for the HP 200A...

...Laptops are becoming more popular in households, businesses, and everyday lives. This analysis will describe growth rates, suppliers, competition, and customers and how they contribute to the industry of laptops. Industry Specific Technology is constantly changing. The 1st laptop was introduced in 1981 by the Osborne Computer Corporation. This technological phenomenon changed the way we would use computers forever. For the price of 1800 dollars, you could own an Osborne 1 laptop. It included about an additional 1500 dollars worth of programs such as WordStar word processing, spreadsheet software, Microsoft MBASIC programming language, etc. It weighed about 24 and a half pounds and also included a protective case. In 1991, the Apple Company introduced its version of the laptop. The Apple PowerBook was portable, which included a palm rest and pointing device that became standard for future laptop designs (Carey, Dachary). A major change to the laptop industry was the release of Windows 95 in 1995. Windows 95 became the default operating system for non-Apple laptops. The release of Windows 95 stabilized several features of laptop design, and brought about the creation of the style of laptops we know today. (Carey, Dachary). As shown in table 1.4, the amount of shipments, imports, exports, and annual growth has changed over the past few years. Important industry statistics related to the laptop industry would be income and demand. These statistics are important because the purchasing...

...can be. First a look into the fluid milk industry, the U.S. Census Bureau shows that there are 280 different companies in the manufacturing of fluid milk. The largest four companies make up 46 percent of the industry themselves. The industry sells $33,547,992,000.00 per year, which is a very large industry. This industry appears to be an oligopoly, because the four largest companies make up almost 50 percent with the largest eight being 58 percent of the industry (census). “An oligopoly is an industry dominated by a few firms that, by virtue of their individual sizes, are large enough to influence the market price.” (case 2009) The census information shows that the largest eight firms should be able to control the industry and the prices that everyone else should follow. Next a look into the envelope manufacturing industry, here the census bureau shows that the largest four firms make up 57.6 percent of the industry that only consist of 149 firms, selling a total of $3,653,185,000.00 per year (census). With the largest four firms making up over half of the total sales this industry would be considered an oligopoly industry. Next a look into the electric computers industry, here the census bureau shows that the largest four companies make up 86.9 percent of the total industry. This would diffidently be considered an oligopoly industry. With the four companies making up that much of the industry they defiantly would control...

...Companies use incentive plans as a way to motivate and compensate employees’ remarkable levels of professional accomplishment. It can also be a used to boost production levels and reward employees for a job well done. The objective of incentives awards is to motivate employee goal-setting, cooperation, and group interaction. For the most employees will perform according to how they are measured and compensated. When employees work as a team, they should be paid as a team. And if the employees don’t get compensated as a team they probably won’t performed as a team. Business has different incentives awards, these incentives can begin at the beginning of a pay period, quarter or the start of the year. Employees could receive a lump-sum payment ranging from $100.00 to $10,000 or Time-Off Award. According to online source “Compensation alone won’t guarantee high levels of performance; however, reward programs can produce the behaviors most likely to lead to success. Employees living more balanced lives tend to be more productive.” (Caruth & Caruth, 2013) The Academic Journal, Team Performance Management was written by Jody R. Hoffman and Steven G. Rogelberg. In this Journal the authors wrote the article “A Guide to Team Incentive Systems” the article was about the seven major categories of a team incentive plan. The seven categories are: 1) team gainsharing profit-sharing, 2) team goal-based incentive systems. 3) Team discretionary bonus systems, 4) team skill incentive systems...

...Inc., the way I will be designing this client server network for this small business /office would be continuing the use of the Windows server 2008 operating system, the Windows 2008 small business server comes with an antivirus and email protection, monitors levels of all software and applications running, can also manage and maintain any large amount of workload/project used on the server. Also I will choose to upgrade Windows XP to Windows 7 Professional because Windows XP is more for home use. Windows 7 Professional can be for home and small business use, another great edition of Windows for business would be Windows Enterprise which offers and has the same qualities and needs for a business but more so highly recommended for larger companies/businesses, the Enterprise software cost much more than Windows 7 Professional as well. Windows 7 Professional comes with 64 bit installation, 192 GB of RAM, backup to a network location, EFS (Encryption File System) which is great for any business especially when in the Health Care field because your handling patient information so the EFS would protect all data this would help uphold the HIPPA standards and polices. Windows 7 Professional also includes software restriction polices, the ability to participate in a Windows server domain, and operate as a remote desktop server. So as a System Administrator, my next step would to be is set up workstations and user accounts with secure login to the medical manager application on the server...

... Problem Identification & Analysis: Barnes and Noble have major issues of concern they need to address immediately to ensure their survival as a company. First issue of concern is that profit margins are decreasing for Barnes and Noble at their brick and mortar stores and their online sales are decreasing. Competitors such as Amazon are currently stealing market share causing all their profits to fall. Barnes and Noble needs to evaluate “key determinants of success in an industry may be used to identify a firm’s internal strengths and weaknesses. By scrutinizing industry competitors as well as customer needs, vertical industry structure, channels of distribution, costs, barriers to entry, availability, of substitutes suppliers, a strategist seeks to determine whether a firm’s current internal capabilities represent strengths or weakness in new competitive areas” (Pearce 180). Barnes and Nobles should reach out to consumers at their brick and mortar stores to help market its eBook to consumers. All employees need to be thoroughly trained with their most popular eReader the Nook to provide customers with a clear understanding of the products capabilities. By marketing these products inside current stores, Barnes and Noble will reach a diverse customer group. Ultimately this will allow the company to gain a competitive advantage over rivals such as Amazon. This competitive advantage will most likely stabilize or even increase current profit margins. One final...

...tablets, netbooks, your newer phone models are called "smartphones" now because it carries on as a mini computing device, and it can do just about as much as your normal computer can. These many devices now replace the functions once done manually by human effort. Then there is Apple Inc., it is in a class of it's own. At face value the ordinary CPU we now call PC's and the Apple Macintosh seem similar in structure, however the Apple Macintosh product rules supreme. Its build, its ability and its market value could never be coined similar to a personal computer. Let's talk about the build of the personal computer; it has more than one manufacturing brand that sells this device. You have Toshiba, Dell, Hewitt Packard, Acer, Gateway, and Samsung just to name a few. Each of these companies have there own way of custom building these devices. Take for instance, the device the laptop. The average laptop weighs about 5.48lbs give or take, depending on the manufacturing of the brand. Then there is Apple Inc. device it is the only manufacture of Macintosh. The average laptop device: MacBook Pro 4.5lbs and the Mac Air are 3lbs now that's a lighter load to carrier. Just because, the Mac is lighter to carry this doesn't siphoned its ability in operation. The PC operating system is created by Microsoft and Windows is the only operating system that can run on a PC. The Mac is the only computer in...

...Channel and Pricing Strategies MKT/571 May 31, 2012 Understanding various markets and strategies when dealing with the launch of a new product can be challenging. Below is a breakdown of the channel strategies, pricing strategies, and environmental factors. In addition, the government and economic factors, innovation and technology, and the demographics of the new product are factored in the plan for the launch. Channel Strategies Most manufacturers do not sell their goods directly to the final consumer. Between the final consumer and the manufacturer stands a group of intermediaries who perform various functions. The intermediaries are referred to as marketing channels, groups of interdependent organizations involved in the process to help make a product or service available for consumption or use, marketing channels (Kotler, & Keller, 2007). Every manufacturer needs a marketing strategy in order to promote their product and make it readily available to the public. So choosing the correct strategy is a critical decision facing management. Apples launch of the new mini iPad will need two channel strategies, one for their domestic market (U.S.A), and one for their international market (Japan). Since the product is new choosing the correct market is crucial for the success of the mini iPad. Apples reputation in their domestic market is one of high brand loyalty. Apple has many brand loyal customers that demand Apple products and choose to...

...distinctive habits of companies of enduring greatness. In the words of the authors, “Visionary companies are premier institutions – the crown jewels – in their industries, widely admired by their peers, and having a long track record of making a significant impact on the world around them.” Visionary leaders and breakthrough ideas come and go, but visionary companies survive the transitions. The “successful habits” of the visionary companies were observed in comparison to “silver medalist” companies in the same industry. Both the visionary and comparison companies outperformed the market, but the visionary companies demonstrated extraordinary long-term results. The tandems most frequently referenced in the book are GE/Westinghouse, HP/Texas Instruments, Motorola/Zenith, P&G/Colgate, Merck/Pfizer, and Wal-Mart/Ames. These comparisons dispelled commonly held myths regarding the nature of exceptional companies. Myth Reality 1 It takes a great idea to start a great company Visionary companies did not demonstrate early success 2 Visionary companies require great and charismatic visionary leaders Leaders of visionary companies were focused on building great institutions as opposed to building their individual reputations 3 The most successful companies exist first and foremost to maximize profits Visionary companies are characterized by the pursuit of multiple priorities only one of which is making money. 4 Visionary companies share a common subset...
