A Sociological Investigation of the Current Trends of High School Students Suicides
The increasing suicide toll of high school students has become quite an alarming social situation that demands our serious attention. Over the past eight years the rate has steadfastly risen from 9.6 to 11.1 deaths per 100,000 young adults falling within 15-24 age-group, the most recent statistics revealed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 2013.The New York Times, dated 27th July, 2015 posted a report under the title “Campus Suicide and the Pressure of Perfection” that highlights the overambitious expectations out of high school students and consequent mental health complexities in the event of failure to notch up outstanding academic qualifications …show more content…
Stressful life events play a dominant role in increasing suicidal tendencies among adolescents. While analyzing adolescent suicidal attempts, it has been found that a labyrinth of physiological, psychological, sexual, academic, and family constraints is involved in tempting adolescent suicides. Achievement pressures are enforced upon via marketing, mass media and schools to attain corporate success, money and all the luxuries in life. Capuzzi and Golden (2013) observed that getting access to “right” college guarantees good grades and good scores, the proof of which can be noticed in several “ACT and SAT preparation courses available both in high schools and private sector” (36). The additional pressure to get admission into right course and right college overburden a high school student’s …show more content…
Social alienation takes place when adolescents fail to locate themselves in the social framework and being able to establish their own identification. At a decisive stage, there is noticeably less social control on individual behavior. Adolescents get detached from the centrality of social security, protection or supervision. Parents also expect their children to do exceedingly well in their studies. Excessive parental control may lead to self-directed anger in suicidal behavior. The decision to end one’s stressful life is seen as a deviant behavior. The act of suicide requires understanding the socio-cultural environment and deviance is deeply rooted in societal

Violence That Follows Bullied Gay Teens

...Teens in High School Science Perspective on Global Problems: Aggression and Violence Today in society we push our teenagers and young adults to strive well with their academics in high school. With that being said, there are so many unknown factors that come with it. With trying to strive with academics in high school, teenagers and young adults deal with those un-surfaced factors. They may have to deal with fitting in at school, per pressure, not being confident and cultural differences. These factors are all equally important but a factor that makes it almost unbarring to learn is Bullying. Although bullying affects all victims, one group in particular that is bullied the most is self-identifying gay teens in high schools (Wallace 2011).In my research I am going to note the facts on what it is to bully a gay class mate, the reaction from schools, how often it happens, why it happens, the consequences, and how bullying can be stopped in high schools. Research by Wallace (2011) suggests that bullying is a form of horrible harassment. Wallace (2011) said that conduct that is sufficiently severe, persistent, or pervasive to limit a student’s ability to participate in or benefit from a public school education program or activity is considered bullying. Research by Fleming ,Meadows, Bob (2010) say that bullying creates a hostile or abusive educational environment at a public school including acts of verbal, nonverbal, and physical aggression. Webley (2011) did research on boy...

Bullying in School

... Bullying in School Bullying in school has been going on for decades and has been a constant issue that was not spoken about or dealt with for many years. Students being made fun of really had nobody to turn to for help to have bullying stopped. According to authors’ Aluede, Adeleke, Omoike & Afen-Akpaida, “bullying research began in the 1970’s after author Dan Olweus began and wrote a book about it.” (2008, p.152). Olweus book is considered the first study of bullying. (Noelle, 2005). For the past few years bullying in school has become a topic of open concern. Bullying in schools has become a nationwide problem and schools need to be held accountable because the students are in their care, bullying has caused students to commit suicide, and bullying has led to students dropping out of school. Bullying in school happens while students are in their care. Teachers are present in school all day and must make the effort to stop bullying when they see it happening. School faculty should be able to report all cases of bullying to the Police and the Department of Education. According to an authors’ Dagman Strohmeier and Gil Nolan, “Educators often do not pay enough attention to the fact that bullying is usually not a single event; rather it happens repeatedly over a period of time.” (2012, p.8). Since teachers make up a big part of the school system this is one reason for schools to be held accountable for the bullying going on in school. I was bullied in fourth...

Teen Suicide

...Have you ever wondered how many teenagers have considered suicide? Today in America teen deaths have been on an incline. More teens have died in today’s society than ever before. But today’s society is the main cause of these deaths. These deaths by teens are caused by what goes on around them in their environment. Teen suicide is one of many dangerous killers known to man today. Kids from the age range of 10-15 have thought of if not attempted to commit suicide. Teen suicide is thought of as a shameful and disgusting gesture, but parents, teachers, aunties, cousins, and grandparents do not take the time out to look deeper to what really causes teens to commit suicide. According to the Centers for Disease Control  (CDC) the number of teen suicide has been increasing in the past year because some teens problems are overlooked and they do not know how to cope with what is going on around them. Teens who commit suicide usually suffer from depression, obesity, bullying, and home based issues. Teens today commit suicide in the presence of grave circumstances. If things in our society were more openly addressed such as homosexuality, bullying, personal infatuation, appearance, drugs, and obesity more than likely teens would be comfortable to talk about their problems instead of resulting to suicide due to the internal pain in which they suffer from. ...entertainment. At schools across the country, many students are accessorized with the latest cell phones and iPods. Children are especially tech-savvy, having grown up alongside computers, the Internet, and cell phones and many connect with friends several times a day through email, text messages, Web sites, or instant messaging. But along with the convenience and communication that these high-tech innovations provide, the potential for negative experiences has also emerged. Often, the parent-adolescent relationship is the one relationship that informs how a young person handles other relationships. Unfortunately, adolescents sometimes develop unhealthy relationships, and experience or exhibit bullying or dating violence. Friendships play a major role in the lives of adolescents. A circle of caring and supportive friends can have a positive influence on healthy development, and the absence of caring and respectful friends can have negative effects. Parents, teachers and other adult role models can help young people learn how to make and keep good friends. Still, forming and maintaining friendships during adolescence can be challenging. Peer pressure—good and bad—often affects decisions young people make. Adults can set good examples, teach interpersonal skills and help adolescents nurture positive friendships. One important lesson is that friends can say "no" to each other and remain friends. Cyber web has its negative effects can lead to bullying (online and offline), suicide and search...

Bullying is something that has existed throughout the years, but the recent violent cases that have surfaced due to the consequences of this; is something that cannot be ignored. Such consequences include the suicide of many innocent teens as well as the acts of revenge in cases such as the Columbine shooting misfortune. The big question is, with all these tragic events taking place, who do we hold responsible? Should these students be held responsible for their actions, should the school be held responsible for not taking action and dealing with the problem from the beginning? It is more than apparent that action must be taken in order to stop this hateful violence. Dr. Olweus, PhD, of Norway, describes bullying as “repeated negative, ill-intentioned behavior by one or more students directed against a student who has difficulty defending himself or herself. Most bullying occurs without any apparent provocation on the part of the student who is exposed. (Olweus)” The praying begins at a very young age; it can even begin in kindergarten or first grade, but the bigger targets are in middle school and high school. Usually it is for minimal reasons such as, having an accent, not dressing or looking like “others”, not being from a wealthy family,...

Teen Suicide

...Jonathan Russell Comp 1112-06 Dr. Washington Research Paper Teen Suicide What possible circumstances could ever lead a teen or college student to the point where they want to end their own life? In the year 2004 it is estimated that roughly 1,600 teens between the ages of fifteen and nineteen will end their own lives (Hosansky). In the same study, it is also stated one in every five high school students consider killing themselves. It is sad to think anything could push these young people to that point. What causes them to do such a thing? Is it pressure from parents, bullying, experimenting with alcohol, or something as simple as feeling alone? Teens today have pressure coming from everywhere, whether it be from parents, coaches, or even peer pressure from friends. There is not one leading cause to teen suicide, but the pressure put on teens is one major component. Teens feel like they cannot handle the pressures of everyday life and when something goes wrong they turn to the “easy way out” and end their lives. It is sad to think they feel that death is the only way out. One way that teens in fact feel pressure is from people they consider their friends. Today it is so easy for teens to communicate without actually seeing one another face to face. Due to ease that technology presents, it is for teens to talk without actually seeing each other; cyber bullying has become more and more of a problem. In a story written by a young boy’s parents, they explain...
