...In David La Vera’s (2007) book Looting Spiro Mounds: An American King Tut’s Tomb he discusses the history of Spiro mounds in both ancient and modern times. Throughout his analysis of Spiro’s history La Vera describes the culture of Spiro’s ancient inhabitants, and the cultural clash that began at Spiro between professional archaeologists and grave robbers- or “pot hunters” as they were fondly called. Through these description La Vera is able to show how culture affects the relationships that are formed in and between groups and how it almost lead to the near complete destruction of Spiro mounds, still considered to be one of the greatest archaeological tragedies in America’s history to date. Due to this travesty Looting Spiro Mounds shows...

...Ryan English 115 – Assignment 1 April 19, 2014 A literacy narrative by Russell Baker “On Becoming a Writer. In this narrative the author explains how he always wanted to be a writer from an early age. During earlier school years he did not enjoy English classes and thought they were boring. Because he was not interested in the classes he always waited until the last minute to complete his assignments. In his third year English class he had a teacher that all the students knew for being a boring teacher he was an older gentleman that didn’t relate with the kids and make the class interesting for the students. In the beginning of the year Mr. Baker felt all the stories he had heard about the teacher were true the class was very boring. Late in the year the students were given an assignment to write an essay and as usual he waited until the last minute to start writing his essay. When he picked his topic to write about and started writing he got very interested and wanted to start writing more for himself. Due to the requirements of the assignment Mr. Baker did not feel his paper would get a good grade because of all the added writing so he figured he would write another essay for the class. It took him so long to finish writing the original essay he didn’t have time to write another paper for the class so he turned in his original essay. A few days later after the teacher handed out the graded papers he started to read Mr. Baker’s paper aloud in the class. This made him...

...QUANTITATIVE ARTICLE REVIEW Context-Sensitive Positive Behavior Supports for Young Children with Traumatic Brain Injury: A Second Replication Study EDUC 518 February 7, 2014 SUMMARY Traumatic brain injury or TBI as it is sometimes called is the injury of the brain that is caused by a powerful force outside of the body. Traumatic brain injury is a leading cause of death and disability in childhood (Kraus, 1995). As a result of TBI, many young children/students display negative behaviors ranging from aggression and rage to depression and withdrawal from peers and other adults. Aggression has been found to be the most prevalent problem behavior of children who receive a TBI during early childhood. Research shows that children who obtain traumatic brain injuries at an early age are more likely to development more challenging behaviors compared to children who might be injured at a later age of development. The purpose of this study was to replicate a previous study that was used to investigate the effects of multicomponent cognitive-behavioral intervention on students with behavioral problems due to traumatic brain injury. The study combined cognitive, behavioral and executive functions along with communication intervention. The hypothesis of the research was that a multicomponent (CBEF) or cognitive behavioral executive function intervention would aid in lowering the amount and frequency of problem behaviors while increasing the...

...The Picture of Dorian Gray: Plot Analysis The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde is a fiction novel that tells about a man who goes through many trials and tribulations that test his sanity. The novel takes place in the late 19th century which is considered to be the Victorian era. The Victorian era was an era of great judgement and it really depended on your social class whether or not you would get treated with high regards. The contrast between middle-class society and the sins of the wealthy corrupted upper class played a huge role in the novel. Dorian Gray was considered to be of the higher class, therefore, he struggled with the madness that came with it. Dorian Gray was beautiful. So beautiful that Wilde made a point to explain to the reader how beautiful and good-looking he was. “Yes, he was certainly wonderfully handsome, with his finely-curved scarlet lips, his frank blue eyes, his crisp gold hair” (Wilde 11). Not only was Dorian Gray well respected, but he was quite the man to look at and everyone admired him. However, Dorian Gray had some of his own demons to battle with his quest to stay forever young. Having this impossible and selfish wish comes him transforming from a gorgeous innocent pure soul, to a full developed maniac. To continue, like many other novels, there’s other characters that have a great impact towards the main character. Lord Henry is the definition of a bad influence that impacted Dorian Gray. Dorian Gray does not have any parents because...

...of 1990, Chris McCandless graduated from Emory University with the notion of attending law school. Before he could start out his new and carefully constructed life, he disappeared. Chris became a nomad, meandering around the North American continent under the pseudo name Alex Supertramp, searching for the meaning of life. John Krakauer revives Chris’s story while attempting to interpret Chris’s intentions. He died during his quest at the age of twenty-four alone in the Alaskan Range. His dispassion towards the life he lived attributed to his decision on entering the wild. His epic two year journey to the Alaskan wilderness led him to the discovery of himself and true happiness. By the time Chris embarked on his chase for self discovery and ultimate happiness, his relationship with his parents was distant. Walt and Billie McCandless were the epitome of a white collar, upper middle-class family who enjoyed the materialistic possessions they earned. Walt and Billie worked hard every day from sunrise till sunset on their home business. During this time Chris and Carine, Chris’s little sister, were only toddlers and rarely spent quality time with their parents. Only once a year Walt would take Chris to Longs Peak, the highest summit in the Rocky Mountain National Park, to make-up for lost time together. The status of Chris’s relationship with his parents throughout high school didn’t change. It wasn’t that Walt and Billie were terrible parents. They loved Chris and only...

...altogether? And were you not surprised that you could understand some of the words they were saying? Yes. It is gayspeak, that wonderful lingo, argot, or jargon, which Filipino gays in general seamlessly switch into when they are gathered together or most immediately when they are around other people in order perhaps to “cloak” their intimate conversations, the better to protect the “virgin” ears of those around them. Historically though, it is known as swardspeak, a word coinage in the 1970s attributed by Jose Javier Reyes to columnist and movie critic Nestor Torre. Reyes himself devoted a book on the subject titled Swardspeak: A Preliminary Study. No other term has replaced swardspeak in local usage since the 70s but Ronald Baytan (in his essay “Language, Sex, and Insults: Notes on Garcia and Remoto’s The Gay Dict”) opines that the term sward these days has become anachronistic, making it improper to call the language of the gay people as “swardspeak” preferring instead to term it gayspeak. Consciously or unconsciously, even straights or heterosexuals have peppered their vocabulary with words traceable to gayspeak. Mention the word anech (from “ano” or “what” in English with anesh, anik, anikla as varieties) to anyone in the metropolitan area and in all likelihood, the person being spoken to will reply as casually. There are also the familiar words chika, chuva, and lafang. Thanks or no thanks to media (depending on which side you’re in), gayspeak has come into public usage...
