...in ancient history. A student of Plato’s academy, he spent a majority of his time in Athens and wrote on a variety of topics ranging from Physics to Music. As a teacher of Alexander the Great, he had the luxury of resources and he used them to establish a school of thought unlike any other; the credibility of which was unquestioned until the Enlightenment. Of particular importance is his work on ethical theory. Two of most famous works on this subject are the Nicomachean Ethics and the Eudemian Ethics. While Aristotle himself does not name these separately, the subject matter distinguishes them. The latter was written first and talks about man’s character. The former is an improved treatment which discusses ethics in a political scenario. Both books are quite similar in nature though, and the underlying signature of Aristotle’s ethical theory is prevalent. They start with the treatment of what ‘happiness’ is, and then proceed on to explain what ‘virtues’ are required to attain that happiness. In Book I, Aristotle begins by appreciating that there is an inherent disagreement upon what is good for human beings. There is no absolute theory that can explain what humans need to do to attain ‘happiness’. He is also not in search of a list of good things, even though such a list can be drawn up. Humans are generally faced with choices and one action often conflicts with another. What Aristotle searches for in his treatises, is the highest good. He alienates three distinctive features...

...Yates stated that the prophets were seen as “watchmen,” which is used as a metaphor of Gods people and telling them of their future lives if they do not follow God. This gave me a clearer understanding of what purpose the prophets had for God and His people. Dr. Yates explained that God’s love was tough but also tender and that God would never forget or abandon His people. The prophets were brought to speak to our emotional side of what God was about, to touch our hearts. The purpose was to confront the people of their lifestyle and to make a change to follow God. They need to listen to what God is saying to them. The rules of interpreting the prophets are also quite helpful and will help me to focus on what to avoid as I learn and read the Old Testament and interpret the verses. I don’t feel that this discussion changed my perspective on the OT prophets, however influenced me in becoming more curious as to what they were all about and how they were chosen and influenced by God. Isaiah1:16-30 The basic features of the Old Testament prophesy is reflected by Isaiah speaking of the wickedness of Judah and challenges them to put this behavior behind them. In verses 19-20, Isaiah pleads with Judah to turn back to God and follow His ways or they will fall to a terrible judgment. He asks them to make themselves clean and to do right and is trying to reason with them. Isaiah then focuses on Jerusalem and goes so far as calling it a “harlot,” as if Jerusalem was an unfaithful wife...

...If I Would Have to Die in a Year? Mortality is something that binds us all. We may have different personalities, different colors, different accents, but we all are human. Sometimes death sneaks up on someone and takes him by surprise. Sometimes it lingers until the person he's visiting knows the friendship will go on a deeper level soon. First I would take a lovely first class cruise around the world for one entire year, or, maybe just use the ships as a constant base from which to explore other worlds, until the fateful day. I would try and travel to every place on Earth, and have as many deep and spiritual conversations as possible, meet the great spiritual and influential philosophical thinkers in the world today, starting with His Holiness the Dali Lama. Then, when the time of passing to the next existence comes, have those that love me, who know me, all around me, for a peaceful, calming, soul releasing experience, and to let them know, it is not a moment of emotional disaster, but one of triumph and transition, for the human spirit. However, life is beautiful and amazing, and probably for us its too early to think about death, because we have so much unfinished work to do and make our families happier,Mortality is something that binds us all. We may have different personalities, different colors, different accents, but we all are human. Sometimes death sneaks up on someone and takes him by surprise. Sometimes it lingers until the person he's visiting knows the...

...The Predynastic Period in Egypt was broken up into 6 different cultures. The Bardarian people of the Bardarian culture lived in Upper Egypt and they were semi-nomadic people. They buried their dead on the outskirts of their small settlements and also conducted ceremonial burials. The deceased were sometimes buried with finely crafted jewelry, cloth, fur and the usually included a crafted figurine of a female fertility idol. Female Figure is a Predynastic Egyptian sculpture from 3600-3200 B.C. made of ivory. The color of this sculpture is gray and it is held up by a platform and wire. It looks as if the figure is standing on its own. The figure has very few lines and looks very smooth. Although this sculpture is a female, she is not wearing clothes. You can tell that she is not wearing clothes because you can see what appears to be a belly button in the abdominal region and very small abnormal breasts, the body also has small curves. The figure was also sculpted with no arms, legs, ears or a mouth. The eyes are very big and close together. The limited use of color and the use of ivory to sculpt this figure shows the lack of resources during this time. Survival of the fittest was what the people in during this period focused on and also reproduction, hence the female figure of fertility. The figure being only sculpted of the just the body was probably important during this time. They didn’t care about women being beautiful but about their bodies and the wellbeing of them because...

...is the fact that this author writes about Indians and for Indians. His characters are young, ambitious and passionate and have the same moral, social and religious dilemmas as many of the young Indians today. At the same time their context and sensibility too is unabashedly Indian. The new and the third Bhagat book, “The 3 mistakes of my life”, has all these qualities. The setting is the city of Ahmedabad that though being urban is yet not as metropolitan as many of its metro counterparts. It retains its small town flavour in pols (colonies), traditional Indian households and small vegetarian eateries. It has the protagonist Govind with his passion and acumen for accounts and business, it has Ishan for whom cricket is the element around which his life revolves and it has Omi, a priest’s son and loyal friend who is ready for anything that his friends are game for. The book is based on real life events. It begins in a dramatic enough fashion with Bhagat receiving an e-mail from Govind who had taken many sleeping pills and was writing to him while waiting for the deadly sleep’s embrace. Chetan was shaken enough by the incident to track the boy down to an Ahmedabad hospital. Fortunately he was still alive to tell the tale. The book is loosely based on the three mistakes Govind made in his life. What follows is a mix of cricket, religion, business, love and friendship. Govind sets up a sports shop along with his friends in the temple compound with Omi’s family’s help. The shop...

...freedom to write what we wanted, when we wanted to. He had an amazing ability to communicate with students. It might have been because of his young age, so he knew how to satisfy teenagers like us. This teacher taught the material from his heart. He was making sure that everybody had understood the lesson before they leave. This helped me mold my papers into perfection with the help of Mrs. Kahn’s exceptional editing skills. He taught me how to write a paper that only I could come up with. He encouraged me to do this by using different writing techniques. A teacher that doesn’t take himself too seriously always will be a big hit with teenagers, although he’s not afraid to impose his authority if he has to. He would open every lesson in a disciplined manner by quickly silencing the class and getting on with the work while still having his bright positive attitude. This was a rarity at my school because my peers would typically waste the first twenty minutes of class. Mr. Kahn showed his students that he actually cared if we learned from his lessons or not. He made sure to get to know us on a personal level as well. We all had a relationship with him and knew if we ever needed anything he would be there. He had a very unique way of teaching. I was so used to the type of english teacher that throws you the common (but required) english class books; To Kill a Mockingbird, The Great Gatsby, Of Mice and Men, or any Shakespeare novel, and tells you to write an essay on it. But surprisingly...

...Until recently, my experience with books has been lukewarm at best. Reading has always been something I’ve enjoyed, yet it was never something I prioritized. Consequently, I only read what was required for school. This essentially was my relationship with books until my sophomore year of high school when I was influenced by many of my older peers. I witnessed them having the most interesting conversations about various works of literature and science. I was enamored by what they had to say, strove to follow their example. Furthermore, I was privileged enough to have a TAC graduate as one of my instructors, exposing me to a variety of great books that fueled my interest. He also brought the Socratic Method into the classroom which continued...

...Censorship is a prominent feature in United States’ society today. Parents are constantly trying to protect their children from explicit material. Reading is an essential element of any education. Hindering a reader from specific books because they’re “too graphic” is absurd. Everyone should be able to experience what various genres of books have to offer. Children will eventually be exposed to the real world and there are minimal barriers that obstruct media and current events. Schools should not ban specific books that are age appropriate for students. A series that will help children develop a sense of independence, a vivid imagination, and greatly improve their comprehension abilities is the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling. In a total...

...have to admit, going shopping for books can definitely be entertaining, but I must also confess that when it comes to buying books, I am a little bias toward novels with pretty pictures on the cover. Maybe it is because in today’s society we are taught to judge everything by appearance, but maybe it is really because growing up my dad read me books with lots of colorful images before bedtime and usually the prettier the pictures in the story the better it was. In books for younger kids most books contain extravagant images accompanied by a few simple words. The artist’s job for children’s books is, in my opinion, is more important than the author’s. I relied on the artist to tell the story, like Mozart relied solely on music to get across his story. When I started to move on to chapter books such as the Cam Jansen series, I would flip through the book, letting the pages fly underneath my thumb, and be disappointed at the lack of color. Not a single picture appeared. I thought that it was the worst thing in the world because it meant from then on I would be forced to read dull pages. Contrary to my initial thoughts, when I cracked open that first book I was unable to put it down until I finished. I was amazed at how I had just seen into another person’s mind and lived with a different identity for that hour. I was no longer Sam Maxwell, I was Cam Jansen the crime solver. I had my own private movie showing in my head. I read lots of Cam Jansen books following the first one and really...

...I wasn’t going to read Demon Road by Derek Landy, when I first read about it. It didn’t seem like a book that I wasn’t going to life, it wasn’t something that I normally read. I have only read a couple of books that had a horror elements. However, after reading so many reviews about it, I had to pick it up. I haven’t read anything else from Derek Landy so I didn’t have anything to go by. I didn’t know what his writing style was like or how he wrote his characters, but after reading Demon Road I want to read his other works because I love it. Demon Road follows protagonist Amber on a road trip of a lifetime. And not the road trip that you do after your final year of school, but the road trip that you see in supernatural, that includes killer cars, vampires, and undead serial killers. Teaming up with Milo and Glen, Amber is in for...
