There is a huge general misconception that Hispanics are conservative when it comes to queer marriage. The media always expresses that Hispanics are particularly anti-Queer, and are more anti-legal Queer marriage, than are other segments of American society. An example was when the New York State Assembly legalized same-sex marriages, the New York Times immediately could have secured opinion from any number of anti-gay marriage groups, yet they featured a response from the Hispanic community specifically, through the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference.
1.4 million Hispanic adults identify as Queer. While sometimes less visible in popular representations of LGBT people and families, Latinos make up a sizable portion of the LGBT population, and they tend to live in Latino, as opposed to LGBT, communities. I believe that the Queer acceptance resides at the intersection of Hispanicity and religion. More than two-thirds of Hispanics (68%) …show more content…

Cries that Macklemore did not deserve the win abounded on social media, with some suggesting that Macklemore was an intruder, and a potentially gentrifying force, in rap music (Makarechi, 2014, January 26). Macklemore’s music, then, has been controversial, precisely for its unusual popularity and appeal. In this essay I undertake a semiotic study of Macklemore’s situation, or placement, in rap music. Using opposition theory, I seek to understand how the listener “reads” Macklemore in the context of rap music and thereby forms his or her expectations for his music. I take his appeal to result from the prospective listener’s feeling of “safety” with the music and his or her identification, or ability to relate, with Macklemore’s persona. I will argue that, in connecting with the listener, the music also reaffirms the listener’s assumptions about Macklemore and rap music, and thus reinforces constructions of whiteness and blackness, as well as the listener’s value system and disposition to other rap music. In this essay, I will first provide a brief explanation of opposition theory, which is the principal means by which the relationships between the listeners’ ideas about Macklemore, Macklemore’s relationship to rap music, and rap music’s relationship to “popular culture” will be understood. ...Ethnographic Essay Rarely do we look our culture and how it affects the way we communicate and interact with each other. Culture is innate to us and we are usually unaware of it because it is an apart of us that we are unable to separate from and analyze. This is what I have learned from interacting and interviewing Luciana Cappuccino better known as “Lucky”. I was aware of her Spanish culture when I was first introduced to her just because of her first name. We sometimes forget how something as personal as our name is stamped by our cultural origin. I did further research into her name; I found out that Luciana is a typical Spanish name meaning light. The religious ties were very prevalent from the beginning even before I had started the interview. Much current work in this area emphasizes identity as one key aspect of sexuality. However, recent critiques of identity-based research advocate instead a desire-centered view of sexuality. Such an approach artificially restricts the scope of the field by overlooking the close relationship between identity and desire. This connection emerges clearly in queer linguistics, an approach to language and sexuality that incorporates insights from feminist, queer, and sociolinguistic theories to analyze sexuality as a broad sociocultural phenomenon. These intellectual approaches have shown that research on identity, sexual or otherwise, is most productive when the concept is understood as the outcome of intersubjectively negotiated practices and ideologies.
