My Hobby
By: Luann Syers
I first began cross stitching 29 years ago, when I was 8 months pregnant with my oldest daughter. The reason I decided to start this hobby was that, my oldest step daughter had been doing some sample cross stitching and I thought wow that is something I could do.
So, after a visit to several craft stores I found a baby blanket with zoo animals on it to begin trying my hand at this. This blanket was going to be for my baby. I chose this blanket because it was a stamped cross stitch (one that has the imagines already printed on the blanket), so all I had to do was start by following the color chart and making the “x”;s that color. This seemed fun at first but, got very boring as all you had to do was follow the color chart and stitch.

After finishing this blanket, which consisted of using a backing material and sewing in different sections of the blanket to keep the backing on so that the baby could not pull out the stitches or hurt them. The material used to hold the backing on was yarn that you took a needle and threaded the needle with the yarn and then you stitched the yarn through both the cross stitch and the backing and tied it off in a knot and did this about 100 times to make sure the backing was tight and then you sewed with a sewing machine around the edges to make sure everything was secure.

This project was very nice and ready for my baby, but, after further investigation I found counted cross stitch, which is when you buy a book and different color threads to create your own bibs, blankets, wall hangings, Christmas ornaments, or book marks. You buy the canvas with nothing printed on it and you have to count over so many spaces to start your cross stitch. You begin by following the color chart and directions on how many “x”;s to make of one color and then you tie off that color and start with the next, until the project is complete.

Counted cross stitch is a lot of fun and takes a lot of time and patients. I have completed over 100 different items, from blankets, bibs, ornaments and wall hangings. I am currently working on a baby blanket in hopes that one of my girls will have a baby in the future.

You not only can buy books with project ideas, but, there are many websites that have ideas for things to make or you can also buy programs to create your own ideas.

Counted cross-stitch was very over whelming at first but, after doing my first project I have also started to make cross stitch projects with beads and ribbons in them which make the finished item look a lot nicer and more professional than just the counted cross stitch with the floss (that is what the thread is called).
The average project takes about a month if you have a lot of time, or can take up to 6 months, as I have taken up to six months to finish a blanket. I also, have some uncompleted projects that I need to finish, but, due to lack of interest or no time I have not completed them.

Many of the completed cross stitch projects I have done have been gifts to family members as Christmas presents or birthday presents. The idea of a homemade Christmas or birthday gift gives you a very satisfying feeling. The look on the family members face is worth a million to me, to realize they plan on using this for a long time. I have gone to my family and seen what I have made for them displayed on a wall or a blanket hanging over a chair that I had made for them. Some of my family would like me to make things and sell them at bazaars in the area, but, you need to make a lot of items to do that and I just am not willing to comment to that kind of time.

I feel that cross stitching is a very relaxing hobby and something that helps relieve a lot of stress and is very satisfying in the end. I would recommend that anyone who ever wanted to cross-stitch to at least first start with a beginner’s kit and a stamped cross-stitch just to get the idea of it and not to spend a lot of money on the project.

The cost of cross-stitching when you buy the stamped kit is around 40 dollars, but, when you do the counted cross-stitch it can be very expensive. The books costs anywhere from 4 dollars up to 18 dollars and the canvas runs anywhere from 8 dollars up to 40 dollars depending on the project you are doing. My most expensive project was a blanket I did for my mother that cost me over 90 dollars with the canvas, books, floss, needles, backing and yarn. The current project I am doing for one of my girls has cost me close to 50 dollars with the canvas, yarn and floss since I already had the book and the needles. You also, need hoops to put around the section of cross stitch you are working on to keep it tight and secure so the
Cross stitch does not wrinkle up and ruin the project.

Hobbies

...Hobbies There are many different types of hobbies. There are indoor hobbies like baking, sewing, ceramic painting or even designing and building gadgets. Then there are the outdoor hobbies, like gardening, fishing, flying, sports and many more. Having a hobby is a useful thing. It allows you to do something that you enjoy doing and relaxes the body and mind. Some people have just one hobby but there are many others who enjoy several. Nonetheless, many agree that doing something that you like during your free time can be very therapeutic. Even more so if you can give others joy through your hobby. My father is one example of this. My father retired from work about eight years ago. Before his retirement, he was the head of one department in a big company. Even though he had a secretary, my father was burdened with paperwork. His evenings were usually spent in his study room and he only came out for dinner and to wish his children goodnight. Weekends meant he had to go out to entertain his clients. He seldom had free time for himself or for his own family. So when he retired, he underwent a complete change of life, which flabbergasted him. He had all this free time to spare but nothing to do. He has never had a hobby only because he never had the time, so to occupy the free time he had then, he tried his hand on almost everything. He started with going fishing with his friend. But gave up because he fell asleep and almost fell into the pond. Then he tried gardening. That did...

Tbp1 Task 2

... Topic: Evaluate the benefits of pursuing a specific hobby. In today’s society and with life in general, we are consistently under an enormous amount of stress. We have more than enough responsibilities and in some cases we’re overwhelmed with the rigors of our careers. To remain healthy both mentally and physically we must realize that our bodies and souls need an outlet. Something that can take us away from the monotony and provide us with new or uniquely different challenges. Hobbies are avenues that we can explore to fill in the voids created by our day to day routines. I sometimes like to pause, just for a moment, and turn my attention to the fact that life is short! Sure we want to satisfy not only our individual needs but also those of the ones we care for, or the ones we feel responsible for. One factor sometimes I believe we fail to recognize, is that if we don’t take that moment to reflect, we’ll forget that for us to take care of others we must take care of ourselves. Everyone has their individual tastes when we refer to hobbies. Hobbies can come in many forms. Some hobbies are relaxing, fulfilling, and serve to cleanse the body and soul. Others re-vitalize, re-invent, and rebuild our mental capacities and enable us to think more clearly and concisely. Turning to the opposite spectrum of hobbies there are those that offer adrenaline junkies and sports fanatics an avenue to feel young again, free, or...

...business, work, and domestic chores. During the twentieth century, more and more people found that they had leisure time. This raised an interesting question. What do you do when you are free to do anything you like? Many people took up a hobby. A hobby is a regular activity that is done for pleasure, typically, during one's leisure time. Hobbies can include: collecting themed items and objects, engaging in creative and artistic pursuits, and playing sports, along with many more examples. By continually participating in a particular hobby, one can acquire substantial skill and knowledge in that area. Having a hobby helps to make you a more interesting person and gives you something fascinating to talk about with others. It can also help you to avoid feeling bored and often provides the opportunity to meet new people with similar interests. Learning something new is always good for keeping the mind active. This will also make you a more interesting person than a person who is addicted to Facebook, TV or doing other time wasting and unhealthy tasks. There are hundreds of hobbies a person can choose from. Some of them are: collecting, outdoor, sports, creative hobbies etc. Collecting is a practice with a very old cultural history. The collecting hobby is a modern descendant of the "cabinet of curiosities" which was common among scholars with the means and opportunities to acquire unusual items from the 16th century onwards. And I am inclined to agree. Reading has been seriously endangered by the new emerging world of multimedia. Most people rely on everything that they can find on their computers online. Many forms of recreation and leisure are now available to us that we are straying from the old hobbies such as reading. It truly saddens me. Reading, in my opinion is a habit that evolves during childhood. In this age of television, reading books is not as important as it once was. With the advent of so many channels on tv, children do not give much importance to reading. . Well, reading is like a hobby that one has to cultivate from an early age in life. Nowadays nobody wants to learn any language thoroughly. You can learn the language that you use for speaking directly from listening to radio or watching TV. But in order to learn the correct grammar of a language, one must sit back and read magazines and books with a good amount of concentration. Let’s start by weighing the advantages of possessing good reading habits. For starters, it improves our speed of reading which is vital to many students as most competitive exams are for a span of 3 hours and having a really good speed of...

Creative Ability

...Improving Creative Ability lab. After reading chapter five I have decided that I have 3 strengths from the 12 techniques for improving creative ability and they are keeping your sense of humor, engaging in creative hobbies, and Keeping track of your ideas. Having a good sense of humor has always helped me out during very stressful situations in either school or in real life and I would say this is my biggest strength for improving my creative ability. Playing Xbox is probably the most frequent creative ability I do and I also believe it helps me think of ideas for projects and assignments, engaging in this creative hobby I would also say would be the most stimulating hobby I could do for keeping my mind active and thinking of ideas. Keeping track of my ideas is a great strength of mine, I can always get great ideas at the worst time but since my phone has audio record I can always keep track of them know matter what, even if it’s in the middle of the night or I’m driving I will always have my original ideas. With keeping my sense of humor during a strenuous situation In school or work I just like to either repeat the question with a weird funny accent or just silly/dirty humor (that’s what she said) and as it says in the chapter it relaxes me and gives me more confidence in answering the question correctly and in a creative way. Gentry Class

...The highest class around 200 years ago was the Aristocratic class and just below that was the Gentry class, who inherited their land, titles, and wealth. However, the women of the Gentry class lived just as extravagant lives as Aristocratic women and had the same faculties as them. The women of this class were seen by outsiders to do very little work at all and mainly left their children at home with their nannies while they went out to parties. However, their work was very important and sometimes very hard, as they were expected to manage the home and the household while the men of the house went out to work. This lifestyle left barely any time for leisure or free time for the women of the Gentry class. Social parties and balls were often held where women of the Gentry class enjoyed dancing and mingling with other women similar to themselves. Dancing was a favourite pastime among most upper-class women which they could express at the often held balls. However, once a woman was married her role was considered manager of the household, and she had much less time than before to walk and talk with former friends. Unmarried women spent a lot of time with other unmarried women. They would usually walk and talk with each other around the town but did very little together other than that. They would usually have the most fun together at balls and parties where they would dance and have a good time with each other. Some women of the Gentry class would learn how to play a musical...

However, they do share a few similarities. I began participating in both of the activities at a very young age. Fishing was ahead of hunting by a few years. During that time he had been a devoted fisherman along with my father. Just before I was born, he sold that cabin to his neighbors on the lake.
