Aquaculture practices in the Philippines have had negative impacts on mangrove tracts, resulting in more than 337 000 hectares lost since 1925 (Samson and Rollon, 2008). The removal of mangroves for aquaculture creates exponential environmental backlash, as the role of mangroves is replaced with polluting aquaculture. The purpose of this paper is to compare the benefits of aquaculture to the negative effects on mangrove ecosystems. When considering the negative aspects of aquaculture it is also important to provide solutions to help mitigate mangrove damage and destruction. This paper has been organized to first provide a background on mangroves and Philippine aquaculture, specifically brackish water ponds. The second portion of this paper is to provide information on the damages caused by aquaculture unto mangrove ecosystems and the environment. I read the Psalms for love, the Proverbs for wisdom and the book of Acts for power. These three things—love, wisdom and power have for years been on the top of my prayer list. One day while meditating on one of the Psalms, I found myself wondering where the author was when he wrote it, what the circumstances were surrounding its writing and what exactly prompted the author to compose such a masterpiece. I fled to the library of my memory and the refuge of my commentaries until my temporary search became long research. This venture was so enjoyable that I traveled the historical path of another Psalm, then another, then another, which soon led to a series of Bible studies at the First Baptist Church of Hammond on the conditions and circumstances surrounding the writing of each of the Psalms. It makes our study richer as we stand beside the author as he writes and as we feel his heartbeat, watch his tears, enjoy his laughter and join in his praise. Then the counter-arguments against Steven Pinker’s conception of the “human animal” developed into an essay arguing that the New Positivism, not science, or technology per say, was the enemy of humanism and its avatars as such. The point is not to become a postmodern anti-scientific Luddite. Genomics are changing the world in ways we barely imagine yet and will re-define what it means to be human (a becoming already imagined by science fiction writers, social critics and critical thinkers such as the feminist Donna Haraway with her “Cyborg”).
