Agency The Department of Homeland Security was established in 2002. It has 22 different federal agencies and departments that makes up the unified Department of Homeland Security (DHS) (dhs.gov. n.d.). Thus, the department is led by the Secretary of Homeland Security and is the third largest Department of the United States government with a combined workforce of 229,000 employees (dhs.gov. n.d.). Some of the components that make up the department is the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), Customs and Border Protection (CBP), the Secret Service, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (dhs.gov. n.d.). Therefore, the Secretary is responsible for ensuring that all counterterrorism, cybersecurity, …show more content…
n.d.). This is done with honor and integrity from everyone in the department in order to secure our nation from the many threats we face daily (dhs.gov. n.d.). However, in order to do these things, the employees for the department have to ensure that their jobs are done to a standard which includes everyone working together to achieve the mission of the department which is to prevent terrorism and enhance security, secure and manage our borders, enforce and administer our immigration laws, safeguard and secure cyberspace, and ensure resilience to disasters (dhs.gov. n.d.). These are the five-homeland security primary or core missions as well as placing focus towards maturing and strengthening the homeland security enterprise (dhs.gov. n.d.). However, without the three key concepts which are security, resilience and customs and exchange these forms that are the foundation of the department strategy could not make the previous five-homeland security core or mission works. These five core missions are important to the department because they ensure the safety of the American people. Thus, the Department of Homeland Security has the power and authority to ensure that the American people and our homeland is safe at all times. All of this is carried out by focusing the different departments or agencies on one central mission or area that ensures that all areas of safety are coved. An example of this would-be TSA which focuses on airport and plane security. They make sure nothing illegal such as a gun or knife that can cause bodily harm or death gets on a plane where a large number of people can be killed due to a hijacking such as the three that happen on September 11. Therefore, by eliminating the threats or any challenges society feels safe as well as willing to travel at all

Domestic Terrorism

...Final Research Paper Topic Mary Levengood HSM305: Survey of Homeland Security & Emergency Mgmt Instructor: Stephanie Lemmon February 22, 2016 Final Research Paper Topic Across the development of history here in United States, the nation has dealt with domestic terrorism originating from numerous locations. These include individual terrorists, organized crowds, and anti-American groups. Many of these warnings and frightening operations were made with goals to obtain political and social recognition. With all the details that have been compensated and obtained by the Department of Homeland Security’s Counterterrorism groups, we can begin to comprehend and determine these terrorist’s strategies. As our past has revealed, terminating these domestic terrorists is an exceedingly difficult thing to do. It takes time, work, money, and skills and talent of an essential group of individuals to penetrate terroristic unions and their developing strategies. Still, we do not permit this to avert us in our attempts to eliminate terroristic threats and their movements towards the United States. Our government and it’s aptly instructed Department of Homeland Security will not permit these domestic terrorists to intimidate or terrorize our country. "The Department of Homeland Security is made up of many components. The training and preparation it takes to be part of this group is detailed and extensive. Its structure has changed through time," (Bullock, Haddow, & Coppola, 2016)...

The Pros And Cons Of Homeland Security

... and initiatives that help enhance our homeland security. Likewise, I have also learned about their limitations, which makes us vulnerable to many threats. Unfortunately, we must accept the fact that in a free society such as ours, there will always be a degree of risk. There are many threats or hazards that the government or the whole community cannot fully prevent for various reasons. Some threats or hazards are unpredictable and not well understood yet, while there are other threats that can be preventable, but they cannot be fully prevented because counter strategies could be in conflict with the flow of commerce or the civil liberties of U.S. citizens. One of the strengths that I have discovered about homeland security is the significant improvement in transportation security. Since the 9/11 terrorist attacks, we have not experienced another terrorist attack of a similar magnitude. Terrorist organizations are well aware that at least here in the United States, security has improved significantly across the different modes of transport and perhaps that is why they are not trying to plan another 9/11 style attack anymore. Another strength that I...

Pad 510 Historical Perspective

...Homeland Security policies of President George W. Bush & Harry S. Truman Tasheika Fulmore Strayer University Professor Shelly Taylor Homeland Security Policies of George W. Bush and Harry S. Truman Over the years the citizens of the United States have had to either sit or seethe when a policy was passed by a president or they benefited from the policy implementation. We find examples in the civil rights act or most recently Obama care when it comes to looking at highly protested policies. However, no matter the feeling or benefit, presidents are expected to make policies. This paper will focus on two specific polices that deal directly with homeland security and will focus in on the presidents that created and enforced these policies. According to Robert Harvey (2008) ever since post WWII the U.S. has had a conflicted attitude towards safety. The author of this paper will coagulate a time line of two presidents and their desire to appease the safety view of Americans. For example, President George W. Bush and his homeland security act which grew out of the issues that arose after the 9/11 attacks. And also President Harry S. Truman’s national security bill which established the Department of Defense during the cold war. Each president had his own motive for signing these national security bills, but each bill grew out of similar problems that they each faced during their presidential areas. Both, presidents were under huge public pressure to make a decision...

Myers HSM421: Research & Analysis in Homeland Security (CAI1325A) Instructor: Dawn Brown July 8, 2013 This paper will serve as a comparative analysis on the research techniques between The New York Police Department (NYPD) Radicalization Report of May 2007, and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Right-wing Extremism Report of April 2009. The NYPD introduces a framework supporting the progression of impressionable, alienated individuals in the United States progressing into radical extreme Islam with the propensity for terrorism. The DHS takes a look back in comparison to the 1990s and the similar factors that may be influencing a potential rise in activity and recruiting of white supremacy groups and militias. The New York Police Department Intelligence Division explored the extreme Islamic radicalization process of “unremarkable” individuals living in the West since September 11, 2001. The NYPD compared and assessed cases from the Madrid attack of March 2004, Amsterdam’s Hofstad Group, London attack of July 2005 to The Toronto 18 Case, discussing the reference points of the al-Qaeda inspired ideology against the homegrown terrorism cases of Lackawana, New York, Portland Oregon, Northern Virginia, New York City’s Herald Square Subway, and The AL Muhajiroun Two of New York City. The NYPD analyzed the framework; pre-radicalization, self-identification, indoctrination to full blown...

Hence, the failure of education sector can pose significant threats to national security and economic growth. Aviation Security

...Invasive Security: Does it Work Bruno Gerardo Introduction to Canadian Aviation (MOS 1022F) Dr. Suzanne Kearns 23 November, 2011 Abstract On September 11, 2001, the world watched in terror as America was under attack. As a result of these events, the aviation industry was restructured to improve reliability and security of commercial air travel. Although the new security changes have improved the overall safety of air travel, concerns have been raised that the changes introduced are invasive to privacy, and are an infringement of individual rights. Biometric and advanced imaging technology have been criticized for this reason, however, they have been effective at preventing further terrorist attacks. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the security measures that have been introduced as a result of September 11th 2001, and evaluate the effectiveness of the changes and how they impact both safety and privacy. Keywords: Biometrics, Advanced imaging technology, September 11 Invasive Security: Does it Work On September 11, 2001, the world watched in terror as America was under attack.
