...was brought about during the period of Enlightenment where many thoughts and ideas unfolded. John Adams and Abigail Adams were two very important voices leading up to the document that helped shape our nation’s liberty. Due to John’s job, which called for a great deal of traveling, John and Abigail often exchanged letters to keep in touch. The letters expressed ideologies to one another on political matters while John was away serving his country. The early 1800s were an age of reason and marks a time of the Enlightenment Era. This was a period that really got individuals thinking as they would join in groups on their beliefs. It was a movement of ideas...

...How do we reckon with a history full of complexities and contradictions? To what extent did Abigail Adams contribute to the ideals upon which the US was founded? In the 18th century, many important figures contributed to US history, however, some of them were not typically considered founders of the United States. Abigail Adams, the wife of John Adams, the second president of the United States, may not typically be regarded as a founder of the United States. Still, she contributed significantly to the democratic ideals upon which the US was founded. Abigail Adams was a writer and thinker whose works offer invaluable insights into the early years of the United States. She wrote about her concerns as a woman living in the 18th century emphasizing that women should have more opportunities, especially in education. Adams also had strong feelings about marriage and believed that women should be able to make their own decisions rather than only be considered “maids” to their husbands. She believed that if women were properly educated, they could use their intellect to manage household affairs. In the 18th century women were not allowed to have, and more importantly, express their opinions. For this reason, other women highly...

...thus were being blacklisted, jailed and deported. The term McCarthyism arose from that time period and is used describe the entire anti-communism philosophy in the United States. Miller cleverly compares the McCarthyism movement to the anti-witchcraft belief in the 1690’s, citing inhumane methods used to oust the ongoing hysteria. The four main characters in the play, John Proctor, Abigail Adams, Reverend Hale and Reverend Parris, are caught in the middle of the witchcraft panic in the pious Salem, Massachusetts in late 1690’s. John Proctor, being a regular farmer lives a simple life, with his quiet wife Elizabeth. However, he has an affair with the young and vindictive Abigail. Reverend Parris is Abigail's uncle, somewhat odd and many townspeople dislike him. Reverend Hale is a younger minister and witchcraft “expert” with good intentions and pure soul. He was the first one to understand how dangerous the hysteria has become. After Parris discovers his daughter, Betty, inert and lifeless in her bed, he calls for Reverend Hale and start to ask his niece, Abigail, if she knew anything. Abigail confesses that Doe 2 she, Betty and a few other girls were dancing at night near a fire with Parris’ slave, Tituba. Parris overreacts and thinks they’ve practiced witchcraft and sends for the witchcraft expert, Reverend Hale. After...

...religion had a big influence on literature because religion was such a big part of life. To start, the puritans were a big part the people that first came to America. they went over to try and get away from being prosecuted for their religion. “Puritans believed that it was necessary to be in a covenant relationship with God in order to redeem one from one’s sinful condition, that God had chosen to reveal salvation through preaching, and that the Holy Spirit was the energizing instrument of salvation” (britannica, puritans). The Puritans went to the new world to escape the judgement and persecution they experienced in England. They wanted freedom. Next, Rationalist were the other big group in the new colonies. they were different from the puritans, but were still important. “the view that regards reason as the...

...Question 1: This political cartoon was made in 1800, the artist is unknown. During 1800, America had recently declared independence. The people of America were struggling to form a strong central government and often found themselves in a dispute about disagreements regarding the decisions made on taxes, slavery, and innovations in America. The political cartoon shows two scenarios of the same white man with an African American woman. In one of the scenarios, the white man is about to beat the African American women with what looks like a lash. The other scenario with the African American women, the white man is kissing the women. At the bottom of the political cartoon, it reads, “Virginian Luxuries.” These type of events were occurring in Virginia. During 1800 in the United States, Virginia was a slave state, the white man that appears on both of these scenarios is the master and African American women, the slave. The author of this cartoon printed the words “Virginia Luxuries” to make a statement about the masters and the way they could be cruel to their slaves and other days take advantage of them to please their needs. The author called it luxuries because the masters were living the best of both worlds. They could treat the slave with astonishing cruelty one day and the next make love to them. During this time period, this kind of actions with masters and their slave women was no surprise. The power that the master had over the slaves, which were simply seen as property...

In countries even today women are treated as unequal with men, they are used and abused they are basically slaves to the men of certain countries. In the United States before this movement women were looked down on not only socially but also economically and politically....

He did not simply speak it into being as He did the beast of the field and the fowls of the air. He carefully put it together step by step. God put man to sleep and from his side took a rib and formed the woman. Not stopping there, God took the woman by the hand and led her to Adam. Therefore marriage is a unique relationship, having its root in divinity (Gen. 2:22). However, marriage and family life, a thing of joy, pleasure, and high esteem at creation is now treated by many as a necessary evil and looked at by some disdainfully. "Those in it want to rush out and those outside want to rush in," they say. This has resulted in the fast disintegration of the marriage unit and subsequently the family. Statistics indicate that the decline of marriage and the family unit has been greater and more alarming in the past twenty-five years than during any other quarter century in history! These...

...Notes for the Course: Religion and Ethics in our Modern Society, 2012 By Dr H Ndlovu Definition and Nature of Christian Ethics Ethics is derived from the Greek word “ethos” that is also comes from another word “ethika.” Ethika means norms, conventions, values, customs the society. Thus ethics is a discipline that examines one’s moral standards or the moral of a society. These are absorbed from family, church and friends. Why Study Ethics There are nine reasons why human beings have to study ethics. 1. Human beings are capable of reasoning from cause to effect with the understanding that everything done has effect. 2. Human beings are capable of making choices after comparing the alternatives, that is, internal and external. People have two cells namely: a. Real – what we have now b. Ideal – what we are aiming at 3. Human beings are self – conscious. This means we can study ourselves by being a subject and be the object at the same time. 4. Human beings are finite or limited not knowing what will happen from the next moment or next door. Thus, we must have principles to apply when situations comes. 5. Human life is an active dynamic phenomenon – We do something as if we do nothing. 6. People also can be taught to be good (Isaiah 1 :18) 7. Human beings are capable of filing an obligation 8. Human beings are also capable of understanding what moral terms like freedom, dignity and so on affects other people. 9. Finally, human beings need to survive. Human civilization...

...The Story of the Fourth of July The Declaration of Independence We celebrate American Independence Day on the Fourth of July every year. We think of July 4, 1776, as a day that represents the Declaration of Independence and the birth of the United States of America as an independent nation. But July 4, 1776 wasn't the day that the Continental Congress decided to declare independence (they did that on July 2, 1776). It wasn’t the day we started the American Revolution either (that had happened back in April 1775). And it wasn't the day Thomas Jefferson wrote the first draft of the Declaration of Independence (that was in June 1776). Or the date on which the Declaration was delivered to Great Britain (that didn't happen until November 1776). Or the date it was signed (that was August 2, 1776). So what did happen on July 4, 1776? The Continental Congress approved the final wording of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. They'd been working on it for a couple of days after the draft was submitted on July 2nd and finally agreed on all of the edits and changes. July 4, 1776, became the date that was included on the Declaration of Independence, and the fancy handwritten copy that was signed in August (the copy now displayed at the National Archives in Washington, D.C.) It’s also the date that was printed on the Dunlap Broadsides, the original printed copies of the Declaration that were circulated throughout the new nation. So when people thought of the Declaration of Independence...

...___________________________ LIVING HISTORY Hillary Rodham Clinton Simon & Schuster New York • London • Toronto • Sydney • Singapore To my parents, my husband, my daughter and all the good souls around the world whose inspiration, prayers, support and love blessed my heart and sustained me in the years of living history. AUTHOR’S NOTE In 1959, I wrote my autobiography for an assignment in sixth grade. In twenty-nine pages, most half-filled with earnest scrawl, I described my parents, brothers, pets, house, hobbies, school, sports and plans for the future. Forty-two years later, I began writing another memoir, this one about the eight years I spent in the White House living history with Bill Clinton. I quickly realized that I couldn’t explain my life as First Lady without going back to the beginning―how I became the woman I was that first day I walked into the White House on January 20, 1993, to take on a new role and experiences that would test and transform me in unexpected ways. By the time I crossed the threshold of the White House, I had been shaped by my family upbringing, education, religious faith and all that I had learned before―as the daughter of a staunch conservative father and a more liberal mother, a student activist, an advocate for children, a lawyer, Bill’s wife and Chelsea’s mom. For each chapter, there were more ideas I wanted to discuss than space allowed; more people to include than could be named; more places visited than could be described...

...to a friend that Clayton had in the department, and he had to admit that Moore had a way of telling those crotch-biting stories that made Clayton double over in laughter. And Moore would definitely have appreciated the little skinny-dipping party Clayton had just broken up, when he'd spied a couple of coeds sunning down by the creek in all their morning glory. He hadn't been there for more than a few minutes and had snapped only a couple of pictures on the digital camera when he saw a third girl pop up from behind a hydrangea bush. After quickly ditching the camera in the bushes behind him, he'd stepped out from behind the tree, and a moment later, he and the coed were face-to-face. Well, what have we got here?" he drawled, trying to put her on the defensive. He hadn't liked the fact that he'd been caught, nor was he...

To my strongest partner in ministry and wife of many years Ngozi Omeje, and to our three children Rejoicing, Chibia and Ifediche, I convey an eternal debt of gratitude for your simple faith in the calling of God upon my life. Kenneth Omeje CHAPTER 1 UNDERSTANDING DESTINY FROM GOD’S PERSPECTIVE To understand the meaning of destiny from God’s perspective, it is important to ground our knowledge in the Old and New Testament bible, which is the revealed word of God. It pleased God to reveal Himself to mankind through the bible. Human beings, regardless of how intellectually smart and educated they might be, can never know God (who is an Eternal Spirit) by their intellectual and searching capability. The Apostle Paul, one of the greatest intellectuals of his time, but who could not find God through his theological and legal knowledge until it pleased the glorified Jesus to reveal God to Paul on the latter’s way to Damascus, likens our intellectual...
