...Reading books is one of the most popular hobbies in the world. Books allows the readers to utilize their mind as they try to imagine sceneries when they read the words on the pages. Many individuals purchase their books so they can read them whenever they want, but some people are not as lucky so they go to libraries and borrow books they want to read. As time goes on, there are fewer people who reads during their free time due to being interested in participating in sports or wanting to play video games. The future of libraries are predicted to be in peril because of advancing technology and the abundance of books that get published each year. Libraries has always been a place where people could borrow books to read during their leisure time. But due to the technology we have now, individuals can read books on their electronic devices whenever they want. The article, “Why Public Libraries Matter: And How They Can Do More,” by David Vinjamuri stated, “The growth of electronic reading holds significant opportunities and threats for both public libraries and publishers.” People who are embracing the use of technology are borrowing less from their local libraries because it is much easier to access books on the eBook readers or tablet devices than going out to loan a book from the library. Not only...

...Date:November 2007 Print Publication Year:2007 Hardback ISBN:9780521847193 Online ISBN:9781139001670 Chapter Description Table of Contents Midnight's Children is a grand book, in the ambition and the scope of its subject, and in the daring and dynamism of its method. It is also an intimate book, attentive to childhood memories of people and neighbourhoods. In both these respects, subject and method, the novel has sources which influenced and informed its construction, and these will be discussed in more detail below. One of them is the novel The Tin Drum by Günter Grass, first published in German in 1959. In 1985, Rushdie paid this tribute to Grass and to the novel: In the summer of 1967 . . . when I was twenty years old, I bought from a bookshop in Cambridge a paperback copy of The Tin Drum . . . There are books that open doors for their readers . . . And then there are readers who dream of becoming writers . . . [For them] there are (if they are lucky) books which give them . . . permission to become the sort of writers they have it in themselves to be. This is what Grass's great novel said to me in its drumbeats: Go for broke. Always try and do too much. Dispense with safety nets. Take a deep breath before you begin talking. Aim for the stars. Keep grinning. Be bloody minded. Argue with the world. This was four years after the publication and great triumph of his own Midnight's Children, a novel which demonstrates the daring that Rushdie claims Grass inspired in him,...

...Children in Non-Parental Care Rachel Metzger SOC 312 Rebekah Clark August 29, 2012 Children in Non-Parental Care Non-Parental childcare has become very important to many families and for different reasons. One of the main reasons of course, is simply because the need for two incomes is on the rise so both parents are now working. There are three main types of non-parental care that parent can chose from; a daycare setting which generally sees anywhere from 10-20 in a classroom, an “at home” daycare with a personal provider which is generally much smaller, 5-6 children or someone who comes to their home such as a relative or nanny. “In 2005, 61% of children from birth to age six spent some time in non-parental child care” (Alexander, LaRosa, Bader, & Garfield, 2010, p. 427). All three different child care services have their advantages as well as disadvantages and it is up to the parent(s) to decide what is best for their child. One of the most popular forms of non-parental care would be the traditional daycare setting. Traditional daycare would be in a center where the child (ren) is taken care of with six to twenty other children depending on their age group. Infants have a much smaller teacher to child ratio than the children in the five year old age group. Child care centers must be accredited and meet certain regulations for nutrition, staff qualifications children safety. This type of child care tends to be the most expensive, but for older children can be more...

...Beckett’s Three Dialogues the key to his oeuvre In 1949, Samuel Beckett wrote a series of conversations between himself and a friend, George Duthuit. In these conversations, named Three Dialogues, Beckett and Duthuit discuss the works of three contemporary artists, Pierre Tal Coat, Andre Masson, and Bram van Velde. Three Dialogues was published in the second Transition, an experimental literary journal, and was written by Beckett and edited by George Duthuit. The history of the Three Dialogues is very important because prior to 1965, Three Dialogues was only ever published in fragments, aside from the original publication. These fragments were often placed out of context and looked as though they had been written in support of artist Bram van Velde. This lack of full publication lead to the piece being under examined and sometimes not fully understood. Over the years many critics have suggested that the Three Dialogues offers a special access to Beckett’s work, that they act as a key to his oeuvre. Some critics view the dialogues as the end of Beckett’s aesthetic development, some view it as a blue print for his following works, while others see it as a credo or manifesto like piece. Overall, weather you view it as the key, or merely another work, Three Dialogues definitely hints at, and sets up the future for Beckett’s collection of works. Three Dialogues foreshadows future structures, makes a template for character duos and dialogue, and most importantly sets up the overriding...

...Apple The company I selected for the extra credit was Apple Inc. Apple was first created April 1, 1976 by Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, and Ronald Wayne with their original product the Apple 1 personal computer kit. January 3, 1977 Apple was incorporated by Jobs and Wozniak after they bought Waynes shares of the company for 800 dollars. On this date they received a large investment ($250,000) from multimillionaire Mike Markkula. For their first five years of operations their revenues doubled every four months at an average growth rate of 700%. In 1984, Apple debuted the Macintosh, with a now infamous Superbowl advertisement based on the popular novel 1984. In 1985, Jobs was let go from the company after a power struggle with the recently hired CEO, which began a decline in Apple’s profitability. The Macintosh remained their main product until 1991 (even though Jobs was the main driving force behind the original Macintosh) when they debuted the PowerBook to replace their Macintosh portable, the PowerBook was very successful and greatly increased Apple’s revenue. However in the period of 1991-1997 their profits were down due to their products being expensive, and Windows being a cheaper option gaining a lot of popularity. After Jobs was let go from Apple he started NeXT computers and created the NeXTSTEP operating system, which would eventually be purchased by Apple in 1996-1997 and they would finally bring Jobs back in. 2001 was the next big year for Apple, in this year they not...

...logical. Concept by Andrew Apanov. DottedMusic.com | Written by Ben Brown 3 10 truths about making it in music Foreward. What do you do when you seek for useful advice or inspiration in something you are passionate about and want to succeed in? One of the most obvious answers (if you are not a member of a suicide club) is probably this - you listen to people who have already "made it" in your craft. And in such a sleazy and poorly documented industry as music business, you better use this advice in full. This was what I thought while thinking on a concept for the first Dotted Music ebook few months back. On the blog, we've got lots of fantastic quotes from successful musicians, and pretty diverse I must say - from Anthrax guitarist to frontman of OK Go, there are very different sayings. So, the idea was born: to collect ten exceptional quotes and build a story around them. Why the story? Well, there is one problem about musicians, specifically when they speak... With the vague nature of most artistic people, their expressions are often pretty generic. To correct this misunderstanding, we took risks to expose the ten chosen quotes of musicians, who indeed have "made it" in the music industry, and create a free ebook worth of 50+ pages. Ben Brown, the Dotted Music writer and author of the inspiring work in front of you, created a truly fascinating story. I encourage you to read it from the beginning to the end, and believe that you can make it really big in music. Just...

Last, this paper will go into detail about cultural and personal attitudes; this will be key when it comes to your behavior and view of yourself and others. Ageism and Stereotypes To begin, ageism and stereotypes related with late adulthood describes is known to be ones prejudice or discrimination that happens because of age. When thinking about ageism, we must look at the disconnection theory (Cumming & Henry, 1961) that suggests adults voluntarily decrease contact with society, rather than experiencing isolation later and the disappointment not selected. Other ageism statements describe older people being forced to involuntarily give up participation with society. The disconnection concept justifies withdrawal from social establishments. Stereotyping done towards old people is cruel and unethical; one-day we will all be in the same situation. Some stereotypes includes: older...

...Job Satisfaction PSY/428 Job Satisfaction In today’s demanding and stressful work environment, a majority of employees are looking for more than just a place to earn a paycheck, but a place to grow, learn, and be committed to a common goal. To be a successful organization, employers must ensure that their workforce is satisfied. Successful organizations realize that job satisfaction, or the experience and attitudes that an employee has about his or her job, has many variables that contribute to how satisfied an employee is about his or her employer. Some of these variables are pay, benefits, promotions, work climate, work conditions, safety, and the job role itself. To understand the subject of job satisfaction clearer, Team D will define job satisfaction, explain the impact that organizational socialization has on job satisfaction and provide an example of how an organization can use organizational socialization to positively impact job satisfaction. In addition, Team D will describe the relationship between organizational commitment and job satisfaction as well as providing an example of how an organization can use organizational commitment to positively impact job satisfaction. Job Satisfaction Definition According to Christen and Soberman, there is a significant relationship between the effort an employee puts forth on-the-job, their job performance, and his or her job satisfaction (Christen & Soberman, 2006). However, the question still lingers of what exactly...

...and children from the 1930’s both were held back from being themselves and living their lives to the fullest. The book Of Mice and Men portrayed the life of Lennie in a matter which touched me and many other readers, discrimination against people with cognitive disablilites is not only real but also not dead, neither is discrimination towards those “of color.” When I was doing my research, finding sources, and reading about descrimination, I realized that not only was racism still very much alive, but also that problems from the 1930’s still exist today. In my research I read that African American children were not allowed to learn, this was astonishing to me because now education seems so privileged and barely anyone even thinks about how lucky they are to be educated. Lennie was not allowed to work, same as the African American children, he was discriminated against for having a disibility and once again held back from living his life. Now a days, people are still held back from getting jobs, and education whether it being for their skin color, appearence, wealth or location, all these problems are still very alive. My first genre (Artwork) taught me that the differences these people had held them down and stopped them from doing what they wanted just as the chains held down the slaves in the 1930’s. My second genre (Diary Entry) helped me feel what it was like to put on someone else’s shoes and pretend to be something I wasn’t, just like Lennie and the African American’s who did...
