At first it was planned that equal airships would be built to counter the zeppelins. But later, it was replaced by Churchill’s idea of countering the zeppelins with fighter planes, Churchill had very much hope in these planes and started to invest in the Royal Naval Air Service. As the plan to bomb these zeppelin bases was started in the start of September 1914, few months after Britain declared war on Germany. Britain was still during this stage of the war behind Germany in aerial combat, they would only have a few planes able to conduct the bombardment mission. Even this the planes still could only fly a relatively short distance compared to the 160- 180-kilometer distance needed to reach the target, so the British Government negotiated with Belgian Government that they would get a stopover station at Antwerp. 19th of September was the day that the British planes were ready for takeoff, but took off on the 22nd of September due to bad weather conditions. Two squadrons, each consisting of 2 planes took off to the zeppelin bases of Dusseldorf and Cologne. The first squadrons consisted of Major Eugene Gerrard and Lieutenant Charles Collet, their target was Dusseldorf. Major Gerrard had to turn back due to oil tank problems. This raid though, had two times less planes, only 2 planes were used, more specifically Tabloid planes. These planes were flown by Squadron Commander Grey and the other by Lieutenant Marix, both whom had previously been on the September raid. Just like during the last raid the takeoff was delayed by bad weather conditions and it was only until 8th of October that they took off. The take of was during the day at 13:20, tis was he take off time for Commander Grey who took off with a Tabloid (#167). Lieutenant Marix took off ten minutes later with the same plane, but the plane number was #168. The targets were the same (Dusseldorf and Cologne). Commander Grey was heading for Cologne, but do to harsh weather he was unable to find the zeppelin base and decided to drop the bombs on the Cologne`s train station. Lieutenant Marix was lucky as the anti-aircraft weapon jammed at Dusseldorf and he managed to drop his payload. He managed to destroy the Zeppelin Z.IX, kill four soldiers and injury ten other soldiers. This was considered a huge success destruction wise and
