Gandalf and 13 dwarves come into Bilbo Baggins’ house like they own the place, and as they are making themselves at home and eat all of Bilbo’s food, Bilbo learns through conversations that Gandalf has chosen him to go on their adventure. Gandalf says on page 22, “You asked me to find the fourteenth man for your expedition, and I chose Mr. Baggins . . .” On page 30, Bilbo still does not believe that he is going on this expedition, saying, “I will give you a good breakfast before you go.” Then, Thorin reminds him, “Before we go, I suppose you mean.”
