Technology's Effects on the Mind

...constantly being introduced. We are in an age where we have any answer to any question at our fingertips, we are all connected through social media, and we live in a 'selfie' culture. However, is all of this technology good for us and moving us forward, or is it making us regress as a species? The question made me curious, so I dove into research. The first step in my research was the most obvious, I typed in 'Does technology decrease intelligence?' into Google. The first article that popped up was from Medical Daily' and after looking at the sources and the page, I decided it was a pretty credible read. The article makes many good points, an interesting one being that technology literally affects us physically. Through studies done, they found technology lowered our levels of gray matter. Working out where to go ourselves creates mental maps and creates more stimuli in the brain, though we give that up when using GPS. That same concept also applies to learning-instead of learning on our own anymore, we look up answers online. It's been proven that when we self teach and find our answers through work we create more brain stimuli, and we retain the information better. Contemporary technology has weakened our capacity for deep processing, which can be gained by reading extended texts, though we are able to filter and read only what we think necessary online. Technology has given us the ability to find an answer in seconds, but not retain the knowledge. It has also decreased our attention...

The way that technology has changed and developed the internet has made Carr want to stress the fact that although technology is very useful, it can be very harmful to peoples’ brain in a way that it affects a person’s deeper level of thinking. ...Introduction Technology has been increasing its use in our day to day lives for years now. The amount of technology that kids are using and are exposed to can easily be concluded as being a great deal more than previous generations. Does this increase in technological availability affect us, though? This question is at the heart of Nicholas Carr’s article, “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” In a study done in 2011 by the American Psychological Association, they found that “adults over the age of 55 who had had a black and white television set growing up had a higher likelihood of dreaming in black and white. However, younger users who had always had a color television . . . were much more likely to dream in Technicolor.” This is just one example of how the change of and increased use of technology can alter the way our minds think and function. Carr poses his thoughts and opinions about the effects technology is having on our brains, while...

...and even TV’s that can connect to the internet. Americans love it and some feel they can’t live without it. Is this a healthy relationship? According to Statistic Brain, 99% of American families have at least one TV in the home. 65% of American families have three or more TV’s in the home. (Statistic) For most homes that is a TV in every room. It’s nice to be able to watch movies with your family on a comfortable couch. We all have our favorite shows that we like to watch at a specific time on a specific date every week and that’s ok. However, is there such a thing as watching too much TV? The average American watches more than four hours of TV each day. In a 65 year life that’s nine years of just watching TV. Nine years is a long time to waste on TV. We as Americans always complain about not having enough time in a day. If we really made the effort to turn the TV off and leave it off, I bet we would all get a lot more done in the day. Back in the day the types of TV shows that used to play were funny and the whole family could watch them. More kid friendly shows were played back in the day. Now days what appeals to America is sex and drama. It seems to be on almost every channel. Cursing, swearing and other things contradict what we try to teach children in school. ...possible because people are unable to fully divert their brains and focus on one thing when other digital input is distracting them. The evidence from Digital Nation shows that people are not as good at multi-tasking than they think and that they lose focus of what they must be paying attention too. I know that in my personal experiences, when I am typing a paper, I rarely type the whole thing without checking my phone, email, or social media sites. This does cause me to lose my thoughts, and like the students in Digital Nation, my paragraphs become very choppy. Carr finds that due to digital media, people are no longer searching for deeper understandings of information, but just finding the surface of information because it is easier and quicker. Another example is how people tend to skim articles online, rather than reading it in its entirety. I do agree that the Millennials are impatient due to the fact that they have grown up in a world that requires instant gratification, however, I also think that they are not completely ignorant if they can utilize the digital media to learn in depth and over time. I think that the culture that we live in also affects Millennials. Our culture is so focused on faster technologies and want instant gratification that it becomes the norm for society. The negative consequences could be that certain information does not exist if it doesn’t load quick enough or it its not found on Google, or that our culture will stop digging in depth of issues...

Personal Narrative Essay: The Story Of My Search

...The Story of My Search Ever since I found out that my grandpa, great grandma, and other relatives had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease, I've been curious of what it really is. I knew it wasn't good news, so I was kind of scared of what was happening, being so young. I thought of the few basic questions average people don't tend to know the answers to: How is Alzheimer's caused? What changes go through the brain with people who have it? Is it preventable? The only knowledge I really had about the disease was that you lose your memory to where you don't know familiar people's names, older people get it, and that it can be spread down from your parents or through your family. I was nervous for my parents, siblings, and I because it has ran down both sides of my family, so...

Case Study: Supermax Prisoners

...Introduction: Have you ever heard of Port Arthur? If you Google it, most results will be of a town in Australia, but it was once a prison specializing in psychological punishment. I first heard of this place when I was researching Australia for a social studies project. I had to write a travel itinerary, listing eight places I’d visit (if I were to travel to Australia) and give a little background information on each place. In reading about Port Arthur, I found that many of their prisoners developed mental illnesses and had to be moved to the neighboring asylum. The website implied that the prisoners were driven insane by the “Silent System” used to punish bad behavior. This system essentially consisted of isolating the prisoner by putting...

...GOOGLE, INC. Google Company History   Meaning of Google There are many meanings to the name Google. Google originally comes from the word googol, which was coined by a guy name Milton Sirotta. Googol refers to the number represented by the numeral 1 followed by 100 zeros. A googol is considered to be a very large number. There isn’t a googol of anything in the universe. Not stars, not dust particles, not atoms. Google’s use of the term reflects the company’s mission to organize the massive, endless amounts of information available on the web. Before Google’s Time Back in the mid-1990s, company founders Larry Page and Sergey Bin were not too fond of each other when they first met at Stanford University as graduate students in computer science in 1995. Every conversation Larry and Sergey had it was always a debate about every topic that was discussed. Eventually all their strong views and different viewpoints would find some kind of common ground in a distinctive approach to solving one of computing’s biggest challenges; recovering information from an immense set of data. Towards the end of January in 1996, Larry and Sergey began a search engine by the name of BackRub. It was named BackRub because of its unique ability to analyze the “back links” pointing to different websites. A year later, their approach to link analysis was getting BackRub a growing reputation among those who had seen it. The word about the website had spread around campus faster than they expected. ...
