...Week Eight Assignment Rebecca Schulz Professor Craig Business Ethics August 15, 2011 1. Explain how you would handle this situation if you were Charles Renfold. If I were Charles Renfold and Darlene came into my office complaining about the smell of old smoke, and insisting that she would not complete a task that I asked her to do, I would first be upset. I would feel that she is really putting me on the spot. I have a task that I need completed as soon as possible, and I have someone telling me that they are not going to complete the task. I would have to think about everyone involved in the situation. I would have to make sure that I am not violating anyone’s rights. And at the same time I still need to make sure that this task can be completed. Darlene has approached me to tell me that she is upset about the smell of old smoke in the file room. She does not want to complete a task that I have given her to do because she says that she can’t stand the smell of the file room. I may feel differently if Darlene came to me earlier and complained about the smell. But this is the first I have heard of it. I am pretty shocked. I try to explain to Darlene that if she had come to me sooner, maybe I could have done something about it. But as things stand right now, there is nothing I can do about it at this present time. I tell her that I will look into the situation further, but for right now I just need her to do what she can to get through the day and complete...

...state a better place to live in. Immigrants lead to increase in the number of jobs and has contributed at least one quarter of the labor force. But some people might think differently like America should not bring any more immigrants so that America can be great again. They believe that immigrants created more harm and terrorist to United State. “Immigrants contribute to the United States in many ways, including economic and social reasons.” If there was never any immigration to the US what would the US look like today? How would it be different? Isn't it strange that without immigration, all the people who are against it wouldn't even be here??? America has always been a nation of immigrants. “ They found that states with the highest rates of immigration...

...I don’t think there need to be employment laws put in place for people with tattoos. Unfortunately today tattoos are still looked down upon. When someone gets a tattoo, they know what the consequence may be for them; and that is not being able to get a certain job. I don’t see not allowing someone to get a job because of his or her tattoo as a form of discrimination. In most cases they are not hiring the person because they believe that with the tattoos the employee is not able to upkeep the image that their employer desires. The classes of discrimination include what people have no control over: race, nationality, gender, religion, sexual orientation, and disability. People with tattoos have voluntarily chosen to get them. In addition, employers have the legal rights to create a work and dress code that can include legal provisions on the visibility of tattoos. It would hurt companies because this may give employees another reason to sue them. A reason certain companies may require body art to be covered is that they are trying to keep a certain corporate image which is important for their presentation of the company. They want their employees to be clean and presentable and fit into the image they are trying to convey. This may be important for jobs in which you are required to work and present products to others; which is a large amount of jobs. Also companies may be against tattoos if they want to keep a traditional, clean image; in which they try to appear to...

...the leadership role. I have learned how to deal with toxic leaders, how to identify them, and how to better handle them in certain situations. I’ve also learned that I can lead meetings and group discussions through our practicing leadership and reading facilitation roles. At the beginning of this course I didn’t think I would be able to successfully lead an activity without getting nervous or loosing track of time, but with great preparation and by applying the skills I learned I was able to have the entire class participate in my planned activity and ensure I did it in the required time period. I know think I am more capable and confidant to take on leadership roles, I find myself often leading the group in class assignments and in work projects. My leadership philosophy begins with being honest to yourself and to your followers. An honest leader is someone who is easily someone you can trust and build a connection with. They don’t only look for the best interest for themselves but also the best interest for their people. Leadership is when someone takes initiative to lead a certain person/group to achieve a goal/solution. Along the way, this leader helps and supports their followers by mentoring them so they themselves can be leaders one day too. To me, effective leadership means when someone successfully is able to be an effective leader by motivating and inspiring others, are responsive to the group’s needs, and they know how to...

...Singapore Management University Maters of Science Innovation | Core Module MGMT 661 By Associate Prof. Adel F. Dimian My Definition, Understanding and Response of the Lecture Topic & Discussions. Innovation Strategy Development Part 1&2 When the need of wanting to be different arises, the need to innovate takes a strong hold in one’s mind to bring about new changes that are often challenged in many different styles, manner, methods and modes. To my understanding different types of innovations requires and employs different innovative strategy or strategies. Which in turn determines the growth phase of the organization and its strategic approach and desired outcome of the innovation. Developing an Innovation Strategy Frame Work The Innovative ideas and strategy plans and developments can only take valuable shape and growth with the right leadership and driving force. Therefore with the discussions developed and generated, I have come to an understanding that successful innovation strategy is determined by the true leadership of an innovative leader with an innovative mindset who wants to achieve success for his organization, employees and himself. Instead of being comfortable and clustering around a few achieved strategies, a successful innovative leader begins by setting high targets and aspirations for the organization. Followed by recruiting qualified candidates and instilling tremendous positive energy, spirit and enthusiasm in the work environment. Although...

...But the reality remains that a lot of people don’t really understand what the cloud means. They imagine it’s some sort of magical or technologically advanced system that exists in space somewhere. However, close that may be to the truth what I have been amazed with is how their eyes open up when they realize that the cloud is nothing more than a server or a cluster of servers that exist in a datacenter that is independent of your physical location and the only way to reach it is over the Internet or WAN connection. I do believe like we covered in class a lot of companies are now offering services over the Cloud. They prefer to have control over their product and prevent copyright infringement and piracy. Plus it’s very beneficial for a company to offer additional services when they already have you hooked. The “Holy Grail” of the internet has always been the ability of a Website to drive traffic toward it and maintain their presence for prolonged periods. But what about businesses, how do we drive business traffic toward our website? Yes a company can have a Facebook page or a twitter account but I don’t think many mangers want their employees surfing Facebook under the guise of social networking for the company. So what can we do to drive business traffic to a site and yet have employees be productive and most importantly charge them a fee? Enter; Cloud offerings but before we get into that let’s take a look at a little history. What made the cloud possible? You have to...

...How do you explain when things don’t go as we assume? For example, why Apple so innovative? About three and a half years ago, Simon Sinek made a discovery and this discovery changed his view on how he thought the world worked and it even profoundly changed the way in which he operate in it. He create his own definition, which called “golden circle”. Why? How? What? It’s a little idea, which explains why some organizations and leaders are able to inspire where others aren’t. As an example Simon Sinek providing an Apple company and how they trying to sell this product. If Apple were like everyone else, a marketing message from them might sound like this: “We make great computers. They’re beautifully designed. Want to buy one?” That’s how many companies sell their products. Here is how Apple actually communicates. “Everything we do, we believe in challenging the status quo. We believe in thinking differently. We just happen to make great computers. Want to buy one?” It sounds totally different. The basic sentence of this topic is that people don’t buy what you do; people buy why you do it. If you don’t know why you do what you do, then how will you ever get people to vote for you, or buy something from you. The goal is not just to sell to people who need what you have; the goal is to sell to people who believe what you believe. Even if person working in a company just for money, but if he will start to believe what you believe, he will work harder with blood and tears. I learned...

...ignorance could hinder a company from global marketing. One of the best ways to target the foreign market is to create products in the country that are based on the needs of the local customers. The marketers that create local product development are called polycentric. A polycentric marketer understands that each country has different needs and they must market to the country differently than they would in their country. The world is one big market for companies to take advantage of. There must be marketers in each country that will help the company meet the needs and expectations of all the countries in which they sell their products. A good example of a successful global marketing company is the Coca-Cola Corporation. The soda beverage remains the same, but the can changes. The advertisements are different in each country. Instead of being intolerant to the needs of each country, they have translated their logo and brand name to suit the needs of each country in which they market. The goal of global marketing is to become like the Coca-Cola Corporation and sell the same product to everyone in the world, with perhaps just one or two small changes to the product that will suit the needs of everyone in the world. There are 4 simple steps a company must establish to start global marketing. First, a company needs to achieve domestic dominance. If a company is trusted at home, it is easier to integrate their focus into the global market. A company that only focuses on marketing...

...the World's Greatest Managers Do Differently' talking about and what did I learn from reading this book? Through 'First, Break All the Rules: What the World's Greatest Managers Do Differently', Marcus Buckingham and Curt Coffman of the Gall up Organization demonstrates their findings of comprehensive study of great managers across various situations. It is an outstanding piece of work as the book written in 1999 was based on 80,000 interviews with managers from more than 400 companies. Some of the managers interviewed in the study were from Fortune 500 companies list while others were entrepreneurs and key players in small businesses. Both authors had approximately 20 years of experience in studying main characteristic among great managers. It is one of the most remarkable studies ever taken and has great significance and role to play in human resource practices. The authors in their book “First Break All the Rules: What the World’s Greatest Managers Do Differently” asks, “Should you build close personal relationships with your employees, or does familiarity breed contempt?” and they responded “The most effective managers say yes, you should build personal relationships with your people, and no, familiarity does not breed contempt.” (Blackaby) Great managers in the world differ from one another in terms of age, race and gender. Each of them has a different style of management and different set of goals. In spite of the varied difference, Great managers share one common trait:...

...1. When did you first become aware that people were differently racially or ethnically? I grew up in a predominantly white community. I honestly don’t remember being introduced to African Americans until my mother divorced my father and we moved to Ohio to stay with relatives. I was ten years old. While in Ohio, my mother enrolled me into a predominantly black grade school. I was clearly one of the only few white people in this school. I felt nervous and out of place. The kids did not want to talk to me, and I did not feel comfortable in my skin. I was subjected to bullying and intimidation. My grades suffered and my self-esteem lowered. We eventually moved to an area where I wasn’t the minority. My experiences in schools where the students...
