With a movie entitled, Lincoln, one probably expects a film that details Abraham Lincoln’s life, but that is not exactly true of this production. Lincoln primarily focuses not on Lincoln’s life itself but on the process and events he went through in the last years of the Civil War and his life in order to pass the thirteenth amendment, which would eventually eradicate the institution of slavery in the United States. At the beginning of the movie, quite a few people are shown talking to Lincoln, including both African Americans and Caucasians. Some of the men are quoting The Gettysburg Address, which was given by Abraham Lincoln. Throughout, he is advised many times by his colleagues and his Cabinet not to propose the amendment. Many of his colleagues told him that it would be better simply to make peace with the South, but he is set on the amendment and passing it before the Civil War ends because he believes that if the war ends first that the South will not allow the addition of amendment thirteen. Lincoln seems to truly believe that the amendment will put an end to the war since the North would no longer have a reason to be fighting once the proposed amendment was passed. In the movie, Preston Blair urges Lincoln to make peace because Blair says that it will save so many soldiers’ lives, and Lincoln allows him to go to Richmond. Later, we find out that representatives are supposed to be coming from the South to attempt to establish some sort of peace with Lincoln. Lincoln’s Secretary of State eventually discovers this and is angered that Lincoln did not inform him that this was happening.
