Philippines: Oliver Salazar To Lead Samsung At SMG
Philippines – Oliver Salazar returns to Starcom MediaVest Group (SMG) in Manila as Media Director for the Samsung Account, reporting into Joanna C. Mojica, CEO of Starcom MediaVest Group Philippines.
He comes from Mediacom Interaction which is the digital advertising arm of P&G, Bayer, BK/Red Ribbon and Revlon. Salazar previously worked in SMG from 2001-2003 handling Gokongwei-URC accounts.
Salazar will be tasked with business growth for the Samsung brand, to increase digital spend and to leverage on best practices done by the agency’s regional offices in other markets.
“With Oliver's strategic media planning/buying expertise on Digital grounded by his above-the-line know-how, we are confident that he will continue to push the Samsung account towards an innovative and integrated approach to the entire marketing mix,” said Mojica.
Salazar has worked with media agencies in the Philippines, Cambodia, and Vietnam over the course of his 15-year media experience. In the last 2 years, he built and helmed Mediacom Interaction, the digital advertising group that handles P&G, Bayer, JFC, and Revlon in the Philippines.
"I thought I would be having a hard time feeling my way through the first few days, but upon seeing the familiar faces, it feels like I didn't leave at all. I am looking forward to the exciting times ahead, as Starcom MediaVest Group gears up for even greater and bigger things. It feels good to be back," said Salazar.

The Role of a Business Manager
Greg Glebe is the founder and CEO of Pedestal Source. Greg started his company in the basement of his parent’s home, where he spent hours on hours building wood projects. He now has 30 years of hands-on experience with design, engineering and construction of furniture, widgets, manufacturing equipment, and more.
The ultimate goal of any business manager, and of any employee for that matter, is to help the business succeed. But what are the other roles and responsibilities of a business manager? Let’s take a look at a few different views and business manager job descriptions.
According to smallbusiness.chron.com, “Business managers direct the talent and resources within an organization to advance strategic business goals.” In other words, some of the responsibilities of a business manager include strategic planning and decision making.
And, according to floridatechonline.com, “Business managers assist companies in reaching goals and objectives related to sales, productivity, profitability and industry penetration, among other areas,” meaning business managers are in charge of a lot of different areas in a business setting.
While these views and perspectives are insightful and helpful, sometimes it helps even more to hear personal statements, experiences, and views from those who have experience in said position.
I started my business by designing and building display products in my parent’s basement and my business has grown into a full blown company that designs and builds custom pedestals, trade show displays, and art pedestals. Though I would not call myself a know-it-all business manager, I have learned a few things over the last 30 years that may be helpful to others.
My role as a business manager is to keep a close pulse on the psychic energy of every person in my company. I know and care about each person I work with. While I may not look them up on weekends, I look for the goodness in them and try to bring that out. Cultivating creativity, mindfulness, personal growth, and kindness matter more than anything.
Great people who feel safe to initiate change are the best a person could ask for.
Bringing out that greatness is a manager’s challenge. I am constantly amazed at what people can come up with if they are not afraid to make a mistake. “Let’s Try It!” is the mantra I live by.
Because I am currently immersed in a radical growth and change period in my business, I’m far more involved than a typical CEO might be. We are adapting LEAN manufacturing principles on an immersion basis and my current role is to drive these changes from the ground up and the top down. It’s the only way to get the entire team on board.
Walking around in a squeaky clean suit and telling the guys what to do seems entirely inauthentic. Authenticity is a foundational principle for any business manager. I think another managing duty is to get involved. I go to work to actually get my hands cut, cracked, stained, and dirty; just like everyone else I work with. If you are not involved, how are you going to know how well you, or your employees, or your business is doing?
You cannot be a cookie cutter business manager and expect to have innovative and hard-working employees. You need to think outside the box, be creative, and get involved.

Ricky Ow To Head Turner Broadcasting In APAC
Hong Kong – International television executive Ricky Ow will join Turner International as President of Turner Broadcasting System Asia Pacific effective in January 2014, it was announced today by Gerhard Zeiler, President of Turner Broadcasting System International.
Most recently Executive Vice President & General Manager for Sony Pictures Television (SPT) Networks Asia, Ow will lead Turner International’s portfolio in the Asia Pacific region, based in Hong Kong.
As President of Turner APAC, Ow will have executive oversight for all entertainment and kids networks, the digital and media services offered, the distribution of CNN’s services in that region, and all licensing and merchandising activity in APAC.
“We are delighted that Ricky is joining us and look forward to the leadership and wealth of international media experience he will bring to one of the most strategically important areas of Turner International,” said Zeiler. He continued: “His vast experience in the region, his successes in launching and establishing channel brands both locally and regionally, his experience in local content production, as well as his deep understanding of sales and marketing, make him the ideal choice to lead our business in the Asia Pacific region into the next stage of growth. In that role, Ow was responsible for overseeing the networks business across Asia as well as developing new channel opportunities in the region. He also had oversight of SPT’s two Korean joint ventures, AXN Korea and Animax Korea. Prior, Ow was the Senior Vice President & General Manager, Networks Asia, overseeing the company’s channel brands, including AXN India and Animax India. He joined SPT in 1999 as Head of Sales and Marketing. Under his leadership, AXN became the leading English language general entertainment channel in Asia while SPT Networks Asia grew into a bouquet of entertainment brands including “One”, the leading Asian language channel in Southeast Asia. Additionally, Ow has led SPT’s networks in Asia to pioneer various award-winning pan-regional entertainment productions.
