The difference between long-term and short-term goals is the amount of time required to obtain the goal. A long-term goal is a goal one wishes to achieve in the future. It may take six months, a year, or several years to reach this goal, but nonetheless, it is something one wishes to accomplish at some point in life. A short-term goal is a goal that one wishes to achieve in the very near future; as early as just a few hours or days, but usually not longer than a few months. Typically, long-term goals are comprised of several short-term goals. Setting a few short-term goals helps one to successfully achieve a long-term goal.
A person aligning his or her long-term goals to their personal values will possess the fortitude and yearning to reach those goals. If one considers their personal values when establishing long-term goals, they are more inclined to be self-motivated in reaching that goal. Someone striving to fulfill their long-term ambition will do so with immense willpower and constant effort.
Some strategies used to help one prioritize short-term goals include: values, personal situation, and time commitments (Keys to College Studying: Becoming an Active Thinker). When establishing the goals that should take top priority, one’s values are a key factor. Including one’s current personal situation and previously established time commitments will also help to prioritize which goals should take precedence.
In order to maintain the focus necessary to achieve goals, one should take several steps. The first step is to devise and plan out various strategies that will help achieve the goal. The second step is to create a sensible timeline that clearly defines deadlines for each component of the goal. Third, keeping track of the progress and comparing that with the timeline will help determine if the goal is realistic and on schedule. The fourth step includes holding

Hellriegel and Slocum states that, “Employees with unclear goals or no goals are more prone to work slowly, perform poorly, exhibit lack of interest, and accomplish less than employees whose goals are clear and challenging” (2011). “The two key attributes of challenging goals are: Goal difficulty which means that a goal should be challenging but not impossible to achieve and goal clarity which states that a goal must be clear and specific...

How to Develop a Plot

...How To Create A Plot Outline I'll describe each of the eight elements in turn. If you already have an idea for a novel you're working on, open your file or get a pad of paper or your writer's notebook. As you read through the rest of this page, jot down ideas for how each element might work in your story. At the end, I'll show you how to use your choices to create a brief, well-rounded plot outline for your novel. If you don't have an idea for a novel yet, just grab one from your imagination. It doesn't have to be good. It's just an exercise after all. On the other hand, if you already have a draft for a novel, that you're looking to revise, then ask yourself, as we go through these elements, whether you have included them in your story. Create a plot outline for your novel in the way suggested below. You may find you can strengthen your novel plot considerably by incorporating any plot element you neglected before. 1. Story Goal The first element to include in your plot outline is the Story Goal, which we covered in detail in the previous article, The Key to a Solid Plot: Choosing a Story Goal. To summarize, the plot of any story is a sequence of events that revolve around an attempt to solve a problem or attain a goal. The Story Goal is, generally speaking, what your protagonist wants to achieve or the problem he/she wants to resolve. It is also the goal/problem that involves or affects most, if not all the other characters in the story. It is “what the story...

Human Services Paper

... Recommend at least two strategies to create alliances between your selected virtual organization and its networked internal and external stakeholders. One strategy to create an alliance between Patton-Fuller Community Hospital and its networked internal and external stakeholders is to make sure that everyone is on the same page with what goals they would like to have met. The concept behind this is to come up with some superordinate goals. These are group goals that everyone can agree on and work together to achieve. It has been proven that any conflicts can be decreased if all group members have to cooperate with one another to achieve the common goal. Another way to utilize superordinate goals is to create a “common enemy.” With this organization it could be any target competitors, disease and illness, and even insurance companies. By having common goals and working together a trust is formed with external and internal stakeholders and the corporation and a partnership can be reached (Jex & Britt, 2008). When making these goals two areas need to be addressed. These two areas are the needs of the business and the desires of the stakeholders. These two do not always go hand in hand therefore, it needs to be determined how valuable and influential the stakeholders are to the organization. The organization wants to create a long lasting alliance with the most important stakeholders so knowing and meeting their desires is a common goal between the two (Li, 2008). Li (2008)...

Domtar’s mission under new CEO Raymond Royer: * Meet the ever-changing needs of our customers, * Provide shareholders with attractive returns, and * Create an environment in which shared human values and personal commitment prevail. In order to achieve the goals in the Domtar mission statement, Royer established and communicated strategic direction and specific goals. The new strategic direction that Royer set for the company was one of preferred supplier status in the pulp and paper industry. The organization’s new goals focused on vastly improving return on investment and quality in customer service. Domtar was able to achieve and surpass its goals, all while keeping costs down, by focusing on Royer’s three pillars to the company: customers, shareholders, and ourselves. Notice the clear alignment when you compare Domtar’s mission, goals and pillars. The key component is what Royer meant by “ourselves.” He meant tapping into and motivating ALL employees in the organization. Royer knew that he and his executive team could not create the turnaround that Domtar’s balance sheet so desperately needed. Royer himself knew nothing of the pulp and paper industry before coming into the Domtar CEO position.
