...Jamal Gaines Dear Hurricane Sandy Hurricanes are not typical in the Mid-Atlantic states and Northeast, so when Hurricane Sandy hit the eastern United States in October/November 2012. It was predicted to cause a great deal of destruction. According to an online news report for CNN, Hurricane Sandy caused 253 deaths, mainly in the New York and New Jersey Area. There was also a tremendous financial loss. Current estimates show the loss at nearly 65.5 billion dollars. Now that recovery efforts have began, state and federal agencies are hoping to clean-up and rebuild after the devastating storm. Hurricane Sandy rolled onto shore and pounded the northwest for two days, but it will be a few years before the area recovers fully from the destruction it caused. Over the course of a few weeks, 253 deaths have been attributed to the hurricane. Approximately 653 people have not been accounted for. It is not known if they are dead or alive. Hurricane Sandy put entire homes under water. Several people have taken pictures of sharks swimming outside of their houses. It will be years before most of the people of the Mid-Atlantic States get back to their standard of living. In the inner parts of New York, people are starving due to food not reaching them in time. In each area, thousands of people are experiencing power outages. Some people are reporting being close to freezing to death due to the harsh winter months. Each week, the death toll rises as people die from different causes that...

...Abstract Hurricane Sandy brought many hazardous to the United States in 2012. The amount of spill runoff on the Eastern Coast proved to be a difficult yet tedious task to be cleaned up. Many guidelines needed to be followed and problems needed to be assessed. As time went by companies and organizations came together to tackle the hazardous wastes runoff which included untreated sewage, oil, and your everyday household items. Plans for future natural disasters were also implemented to prevent lasting effects from spill runoff. In October of 2012, Hurricane Sandy became a devastation to the Eastern Part of the United States. Sandy not only wiped away homes, buildings, businesses, etc., it also left behind many hazards and lasting damages. One main problem that this hurricane promoted was the release of sewage. It is said that over ten billion gallons of treated sewage flooded into the streets and homes. This amount is equivalent to piling up forty-one feet of sewage across the span of central park. Not only did the sewage flood streets and homes, it also leaked into the rivers, canals, and bays of New York and New Jersey. Needless to say, this overwhelmed the states as they were not prepared to combat or handle this type of pressure (Schwirtz, Michael). Time had passed and operations had come into play to begin cleaning up the hazardous waste. Just when the clean up began, other problems began to occur....

...Preparedness and Resilience Planning during Hurricane Sandy: Hurricane Sandy Lessons Learned from Hurricane Katrina University of Maryland University College Homeland Security Management: Resilience Planning and Preparedness for Disaster Response and Recovery (2152), Spring 2015 Written By: Brittany Wiley Introduction: Major Hurricane disasters along the coastlines have affected many cities and communities which have forced them to take into action and adopt the conception of emergency management, such as resilience planning, disaster preparedness, response and recovery planning. Mitigation preparedness plays an effective part in the emergency management plan. Many cities and communities must explore strategies to reduce the major impact these disasters have and implement resilience planning that will allow communities to rebuild. According to the National Disaster Recovery Framework (2011), “a successful recovery process promotes practices that minimize the community’s risk to all hazards and strengthens it’s ability to withstand and recover from future disasters, which constitute a community’s resiliency” (p. 11). Furthermore, Hurricane disaster’s not only expose community’s vulnerabilities but it gives them the opportunity to rebuild with more resiliency. When comparing two devastating Hurricane disasters that have impacted many cities, communities and lives; it’s important to consider Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans and Hurricane Sandy, New Jersey and New York. Both disasters...

...In late October of 2012, a post tropical cyclone swept through the Caribbean and ended up in the East Coast of the United States. This natural disaster was called Hurricane Sandy. Many citizens living in the New York and New Jersey areas were devastated by Hurricane Sandy. ...University of Phoenix Detecting Media Bia HUM/114 The reported story of President Obama abandoning his campaign in Florida to deal with the state officials along the Atlantic Coast in wake of Hurricane Sandy was not clear but seems to be accurate. The information that was given from MSN.com did not seem to have enough depth. The story was short, but it seemed to lack what steps other than generators, food and water will be provided if needed. The areas that are currently being affected are areas that have public transportation. The families that relies on the city or state transportation system, what are they to do if they can’t evacuate? What safe havens are to be provided if any? The concerns of the President to worry about the people of his country, compared to just trying to win a consecutive term in office is very important. President Obama wanted everyone in the area to be safe and evacuate. The story did not address if the President was going to try and campaign after the storm, or if the concern of election weighed on him during this time. The news article did not express and further views from the world. No other perspectives were given in the story. The President assumed that this will be a long process to have these states up and running once the hurricane hits land. It has also been assumed “close coordination” amongst the government leaders that safety and security measures are in place after the storm passes over. The questionable assumptions that could...

...Economic Impact of Hurricane Sandy on New Jersey Abstract In 2012 Hurricane Sandy came and made a horrendous imprint on the Northeast United States. Sandy was a category 3 storm that ravaged people, towns, and businesses up and down the Atlantic coast flooding streets & tunnels, subway lines, and cut power in and around the city. Here we will see what the economic impacts were to New Jersey because of the storm. We will also look at the recovery and how that affected the economy for that state as of today, and projections for the future. Key words: Economy Economic Damage to the State There had been descending times in New Jersey, their GDP dropped from $482.1 billion in 2008 to $470.35 billion in 2009 during the Great Recession, and has rebounded slowly, climbing back to $480.4 billion in 2010 and hitting $486.99 billion in 2011. In both years, New Jersey ranked 47th nationally in economic growth (Magyar, 2013). Then a major disaster in Hurricane Sandy happened, and packed a bigger economic punch than most people had thought. In its sweep through the Northeast, the storm halted sales at major retailers at the start of the crucial holiday shopping season, closed factories and slowed home sales in one of the most densely populated areas of the country. Target and Macy's blamed the storm for weak sales in November. Macy's and Nordstrom Inc. reported their first monthly sales drop since late 2009, when the U.S. economy was just emerging from the Great Recession. The...

...impacts. The Great Eight nations, including U.S., have convened various global summits where heads of states come to debate how to counter the increased climate change. Various recommendations have been proposed to counter the effects of climate change and devise ways in which the change are accommodated. This paper will discuss the rhetorical questions asked by the author of the journal article. ‘Adaptation’ is authored by Eric Klinenberg and is published in a journal called The New Yorker. The targeted audience is the people of New York, who have suffered the effects of climate change in the city. The article is written by the department of urban planning. This gives the author authority to address his audience since the department is concerned with enlightening the urban population about things that affect their everyday life. The date of publication is January 2013 making it relevant even to date. The city of New York is still subject to heat waves, hurricanes, and floods. The journal article is titled Adaptation: How can cities be “climate proofed”. The title articulates the content since it is taking about adapting to climate change in New York and other cities. This is after Hurricane Sandy that occurred in New York. The author focuses on how cities can take measures to adapt to weather changes. By climate proofing, the author means taking measures to prevent adverse weather condition. He uses a Geophysicist, who narrates about various cities that have become climate proofed...

...Hurricane Katrina changed the way United States viewed floodplain management and flood risk management. The Great Mississippi River Flood of 1993 produced the highest economic damages of the century, killing over 130 people, costing over $20 billion dollars in flood damages. Hurricane Katrina caused over a million people to lose homes, jobs, and took over 1300 lives. It has been estimated the restoration of the communities and some level of flood protections will exceed over $100 billion dollars when it’s all done. Before the twin towers were hit on September 11, 2001, it seem like the United States was headed in the right directions with floodplain and risked management. Due to the terrorist attacks on that day, change the way America took their approach on homeland security. All the focus and money shifted to US Department of Defense, and the natural hazard management was kind of put on the back burner and basically forgot about until Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans, Gulf of Mexico, Louisiana, and Mississippi. Hurricane Katrina changed the game for how America planned for flooding and risk management. When Hurricane Katrina hit, it was a slap in the face on the response to flooding that took place in New Orleans. Up to this point there was not a single inventory of levees and flood damage structures in United States. America became a reactive force instead of an active force. The Secretary of Defense got involved and requested the US National Academics to establish...

...27 May 2013 The town that I live in is XXXX, XX which is actually a borough; the total population is less than 5000 and therefore does not have its own disaster website. The county seat which is the town of XXXXX, also in XXXX County is also lacking in its own web based information source. The state site www.nj.gov does have links and information available for this purpose and simply lists contact phone numbers for the individual counties and some of the larger towns. Two of the largest resources available at the state site are preparedness checklists for a multitude of disasters both natural and manmade. There is a larger focus on the natural disasters since just last year so much damage was caused by Hurricane Sandy, and now as the beginning of the hurricane season starts again. There are, of course, checklists and preparation tips available for man-made disasters, again in light of the recent bombing in Boston just a few weeks ago. Some of the type information available is explained by this taken from their website: “Search for “EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT COLLECTION” at the New Jersey State Library’s Website. These materials are available for New Jersey citizens, and to emergency managers, government officials, emergency responders, teachers, engineers and corporate emergency officials in New Jersey who need to prepare or respond to any emergency situation. Materials include handbooks, videos, reports or software.” (www.nj.gov) The list of the available materials...

...true, however, doesn’t mean that people have to accept it. In Ibsen’s play An Enemy of the People, we see how the method of telling the truth, not the truth itself, can be ignored and twisted based on what one wants to believe. The method for telling the truth in An Enemy of the People is Dr. Stockmann. He has scientific proof that the baths are polluted and causing people to become sick. This is the truth, but we see how people such as the mayor and Hovstad are able to slander the doctor in order to hide the truth. That is the key point. The truth remained the truth throughout the entire play. The actions of the mayor and the other main characters prove that they accepted Dr. Stockmann’s findings as true. They, however, chose to ignore the truth for their own benefit. This leads to the question of: is the truth evaded when it becomes inconvenient? The answer is absolutely yes. While the truth may be absolute, it can be evaded rather easily. A common reason to evade the truth is for self-interest as seen in An Enemy of the People. Hovstad, Billings, and Aslasken were quick to accept the truth when it best suited their plans, but as soon as their business was threatened, they turned their back on the truth ultimately siding with one of the very people they initially were planning to unseat, the mayor. This greed and fickleness of human nature is often what helps prevent the truth. Not only was the truth evaded, but in this case it was completely kept from the general public...

...fossil fuels, given the fact that the rate of temperature increase nearly doubled in the last 50 years (GlobalWarming, 2014, para. 3). Greenhouse gases allow sunlight to shine into the atmosphere freely. When the sunlight strikes the Earth’s surface, some of it reflects back to space as heat. The greenhouse gases absorbs this heat and traps it in the atmosphere keeping the Earth at a suitable temperature for humans to live in. There are various amounts of greenhouse gases but carbon dioxide, oxygen, methane and nitrous oxide seem to be more dominant (Hunt, 2011, online). However, when too much of the gas is released then too much of the heat gets trapped within the atmosphere. This leads to a warmer planet. Scientists have studied and proven how having a warmer planet leads to drastic climate changes which then leads to changes in weather. ______________________________________________________________________________ There are reasons why the public should be concerned with the drastic climate changes occurring around the world. Climate change is very similar to global...

...decided to write down the horrors of human trafficking, despite the mixed reactions it would receive. Her writing encapsulates the life of those who are brought into trafficking and how damaging it truly is. She talks of real people that she researched and shares their stories. Mainly mentioned are the girls of Bobby Bad, a pimp stationed out of Las Vegas. Among them are Jessica (previously known as Lacy), Millie (previously known as Sugar), Star, Cherry, Brandi, Kiki, and others who worked for different pimps. She talks about their typical nights, their attachment to the life, and even subsequent deaths from the life. These stories were intended to show people the truth; there was no beating around the bush. Everything said was raw and brings a new light to an issue that is often pushed aside. I think that Linda Smith was successful in achieving her goal. My heart ached for those girls, wishing that I could do something to change their lives. Smith describes in detail how horrifically the girls are treated, by Bobby and by the johns who buy their “services.” She talks about the abuse – physical, psychological, and sexual – that these girls endure on a daily basis by their pimps and the johns. She shares heartbreaking facts of the ages of the girls, some starting as young as 11 years old, and how they crave love and feel as though their pimp truly does love them. Linda Smith also offers her own commentary, talking about facts about this issue and explanations as to why it is such...

I also see a lot of African Americans which I am, very few Whites, Asians, and Hispanics. Most people think you should travel the world to see diversity but living in New York you exposed to cultural diversity. There are hundreds of different cultures in other state of United States. Diversity has a lot to do with the mixture of cultures, people, and traditions that come together to make up a community. Diversity also plays a part of how we all are unique individuals with our own cultures and traditions. It provides opportunities that would allow people to learn about other cultures and traditions. Every summer our parks are full of diversity. There are different types of music, dances, singing, and poetry we get to hear. I had the pleasure of experiencing and getting to know different languages such as French and Creole, and slang talks such as Patois.
