...Common Causes of Stiff Neck: How is neck pain diagnosed? In diagnosing the cause of neck pain, it is important to review the history of the symptoms. In reviewing the history, the doctor will note the location, intensity, duration, and radiation of the pain. Is the pain worsened or improved with turning or repositioning of the head? Any past injury to the neck and past treatments are noted. Aggravating and/or relieving positions or motions are also recorded. The neck is examined at rest and in motion. Tenderness is detected during palpation of the neck. An examination of the nervous system is performed to determine whether or not nerve involvement is present. Further testing of undiagnosed neck pain can include X-ray evaluation, CAT scan,...

...Dance Injuries and Prevention By Katrina Thompson Kin 380, Thomson April 20, 2011 Dance Injuries and Prevention Next to stage fright, the biggest nightmare for a dancer is to become injured. Injuries, depending on the severity, can mean the end of a career in dance and an end to something that you enjoy doing. According to a survey conducted on the injuries obtained by Broadway dancers, the most common injuries occurred on the lower extremities of the body at fifty two percent, followed by the back at twenty two percent, and the neck at twelve percent. The least frequent injuries occurred in the upper extremities with the shoulder consisting of only six percent of the dancers. Of the lower extremities the knee (29%), ankle (25%), foot (20%), and the hip (12%) were the more frequent sites of injury (Evans, Evans, Carvajal, Perry). In order to prevent these types of injuries from occurring it’s imperative that dancers follow the proper precautions such as stretching, proper warm-up techniques and general care for their bodies. After acquiring an injury you must follow proper treatments in order to recover effectively. Your spine is made up of three sections; the top portion or the cervical, the middle portion or the thoracic, and the lower portion or the lumbar (Anderson, Parr, and Hall). When it comes to back injuries, dancers tend to get injured in their thoracic or lumbar regions. The most common injury is frozen back. Frozen back is when the muscles in the back...

...Health Tips for Back Pain by Pauline Dominique C. Tarrazona, R.N., L.M.T Prevalence of Back Pain The incidence of low back pain is high anywhere in the world. According to the World Health Organization’s Health Statistics and Health Information System’s database, back pain together with neck pain is second to Unipolar Depressive Disorders on the top ten list of diseases and injuries that account for the highest number of disability-adjusted life year (DALYs) worldwide. DALY is a measure of the overall burden of disease expressed as the number of years lost due to ill-health, disability or early death. The data showed that, second to Unipolar Depressive Disorders, a lot of people affected have lived with the burden of neck and back pain for more years than any other diseases. In fact, the lifetime prevalence of non-specific low back pain in industrialized countries is 60-70%. This is much higher than in developing countries. But any source you find would tell you that it is a leading cause of disability and thus missed work and other important activities, affecting 8 out of 10 people at some point in their lives. The causes of Back Pain The causes of back pain are rarely specific or singular. Most cases result from a variety of factors and only a minority of the cases of back pain result from physical causes. These are some of the causes of back pain in people: * Poor posture (sitting, standing, sleeping, bending) * Intense exercise without proper warm-up...

The associated system with this case study is the neurological system, which is the system in the human body that deals with a network of nerves and cells that send messages from the brain and spinal cord to the rest of the body (Mandal, 2013). Based on this case study a SOAP note, which consists of a subjective data, objective data, an assessment, and a plan, will be created to help identify and assess the condition of the patient. Subjective: The patient, Mr. Chestnut, is an 89-year-old male, who was admitted into the care facility with his caregiver/family member, complaining of pain in his head. The patient states that the pain began two days ago, and has been fluctuating...

...Difficult People Marvin D. Cofield Jack Welch Management Institute Professor Ardith Bowman JWI 505 Business Communication 10 Feb 2013 Difficult People My topic of choice is on “How to deal with difficult people and their decisions even when they are your boss?” The reason I chose this topic is because I’m quite sure I’m not the only one that has had to deal with someone in upper management that is stubborn and difficult to deal with and the decisions that they make just make no sense whatsoever. This paper follows Munter’s Tell/Sell style of presentation (Munter, Ch 5 pp.86). I will attempt to capture the attention of the audience and show how the topic relates to them. The mental and emotional connection is the level of stress and anxiety most people get from being in the position and how to deal with it. The stress of not being to state the issues to the boss for fear of reprisal. I think this should be an interesting topic to speak on and share my experiences and results. Even if some haven't had the misfortune of ever being in that position, I'm sure just hearing what others have to say on the topic will be beneficial in some way. We have all been there at some point in our lives at one time or another and if you haven’t, consider yourself blessed and very fortunate. Dealing with difficult people. Even if you haven’t been on the job for a real long time, it is very unusual to have not found someone in the workforce that you can consider difficult to deal with...

In addition, people are obsessed with playing electronic games which is a common phenomenon in public places such as on buses and MTR, and this is widely known as "bow head tribe." Spanned over three years, the joint study involving both adults and school children aimed at examining their time spent on using various IT products, the tasks performed and postures adopted in their daily use. The relationship between the use of electronic devices and the development of musculoskeletal symptoms is a major focus of this study. Participants were asked to report any related physical problems, such as neck pain, shoulder pain, and wrist and hand pain symptoms. The first phase of the survey was conducted in 2011-2012 involving a total of 465 adults aged between 18 to 50 years old. 221 persons were full-time workers and 244 were college students, all. Among them, 90% were daily smartphone users, 74% used desktop computers, 61% laptop computers, and 35% used tablet computers. 70% of...

...important educational system in which the library staffs are the key persons in the provision of unquantifiable information services to library patrons and community of users. Poor working conditions affect the physical well-being of the library staffs. In line with this, the researcher attempted to find how the workstations of the library staffs and workers of the seven (7) academic institutions and eleven (11) schools institutions in Angeles City are ergonomically designed. The researcher used the descriptive method and inferential statistics such as T-test to check the significant differences between the library ergonomics of the academic and school institutions and also percentage distribution and weighted mean of the responses of the research respondents. Findings of the study showed that library staffs in both academic and school libraries were not fully ergonomically aware on the different physical factors that strain their bodies when staying in their workstation. The respondents indicated uncertainty on the comfort they have on their workstation. They also indicated that they experienced less stress on the eyes but they experienced much pain on the wrist and neck. These pains that were brought by the unergonomic furniture did not fit the different anthropometric measures of the library staffs that require knowledge and training to correct the unfit furniture. Indeed, it is desirable to fully understand the benefit of taking micro-break, office exercises, and proper arrangement...

...and used to replace the area of the tongue that is removed. Glossectomy is usually done to treat tongue cancer. If cancer has spread (metastasized) to lymph nodes in the neck, lymph nodes may be removed from one or both sides of the neck. Lymph nodes are part of the body's disease-fighting (immune) system. This procedure varies depending on the location and severity of the cancer, and the size of the tumors. The procedure may be called: • Partial glossectomy. This is when less than half of the tongue is removed. • Hemiglossectomy. This is when half of the tongue is removed. • A total...

...Chapter 1 Introduction In earlier civilizations, trepanization (drilling holes in the skull) was performed because of the belief that this would release demons that had entered into the skull and had to be released, if headache relief was to result. In the seventeenth century, it was suggested by Willis that the head pain of 'megrim' or migraine resulted from the swelling of blood vessels within the head. Interestingly, this explanation of blood vessel swelling is close to the belief today that such swelling is involved in migraine headaches (Edmeads, 1997). At the turn of the twentieth century, Sir William Osler proposed that headaches were due to 'muscular rheumatism' of the head. This was probably the first suggestion that muscle abnormalities might be involved. During the 1940s, Wolff carried out a series of experiments that showed that involuntary contraction of scalp and neck muscles could result in headache development. Other causes have been suggested; these were more serious than muscle dysfunction and would evidently require other medical interventions (Solomon, 1993). In the worldwide view, headache can be such a big health problem as evidenced by the establishment of the World Headache Alliance in 1997. The organization exists to alleviate the burden of headache worldwide, in particular, by sharing information among headache organizations and by increasing the awareness and understanding of headache as a public health concern with profound social and economic...

...REPEATED STRESS INJURY: A STUDY FOR BRIJLAX SYSTEM Adhish Sreekumar MHRM-2012-14 12HS60008 Executive Summary In this ever-growing field of Information Technology sector, ergonomics is a very important factor that cannot be overlooked in the information technology-working environment. This study was undertaken to assess reporting of Repetitive Stress Injury (RSI) among keyboard users in Mumbai. A questionnaire-based survey was carried out among 50 computer using clerical staffs. All the completed questionnaires were returned and data analyzed. The main findings from the present work showed symptoms such as eye problems and wrist pain, neck and shoulder pain were common among computer users. Severity of pain increased with improper working postures, inadequate ergonomic furniture and number of hours of computer use at work. Reporting of RSI was higher among females. A thorough study was done on the cause of diseases related with RSI and the importance of frequent rest periods and correct work postures were clearly understood. In conclusion, it is proposed that computer users need to be provided with an ergonomically conducive environment as well as to be educated and trained with respect to RSI. Implementation of such program(s) will go a long way towards preventing appearance of RSI symptoms among the young population currently engaged in the IT sector with us. CONTENTS 1. INTRODUCTION ...

...Benefits of Chiropractic Care Everyone has had a moment when they haven’t felt like their health was a 100 percent. We complain about our backs, necks, having headaches, and feeling fatigue. Most people can relate to these problems. These problems have been around for centuries. All that has changed is how we treat our pain. Most of us probably pop an Advil or some sorts of pain killer and go on with the day. Then at the end of the day the pain probably returns, maybe even worse than before. This most likely happens because medicine is taken to relieve the pain not to fix what's causing the pain. What everyone should consider is putting the pain killers down and making an appointment with a chiropractor. What is a chiropractor? “A chiropractor is health care professional focused on the diagnosis of pain. They treat through hand adjustment and/or manipulation of the spine. Most chiropractors seek to reduce pain and improve the functionality of patients as well as to educate them on how they can account for their own health through exercise, ergonomics and other therapies to treat back pain. Chiropractic is generally categorized as alternative medicine or complementary medicine” (Bowen). They focus mainly on finding the cause to eliminate the pain not just treat it. According to Dr. Kara Johnson D.C. they focus on getting the patient back to maximum health by moving interferences in the spine for healing in a safe and comfortable way. Many may think that the profession of...

...Angina Causes: Angina or chest pain occurs when the heart does not get an adequate oxygen supply because the arteries supplying the heart muscle are either blocked or narrowed. Coronary heart disease is the most common cause of chest pain. Some other causes of angina may be arrhythmias, anemia, coronary artery spasm, heart failure, heart valve disease, and hyperthyroidism. Stable angina is chronic and predictable meaning that it occurs after the activity or exercise and is short lasting (1-15 mins.). Unstable angina is chest pain that occurs suddenly, progressively becomes worse, and lasts longer than 15-20 mins (Chen & Zieve, 2011). S&S: Stable and Unstable angina present with the same symptoms: tightness, heavy pressure, squeezing or crushing pain in the chest, pain may radiate to shoulder, back, neck, jaw, left arm, shortness of breath, weakness, and fatigue. Some other symptoms may be sweating, dizziness or lightheadedness, nausea, vomiting, and palpitations (Chen & Zieve, 2011). Diagnostic tests: Tests that the doctor will run are to see what is causing the poor supply of blood to the heart. Some blood tests that are run are troponin 1 and T-00745, creatine phosphokinase, and myoglobin. These show if there is any damage to the heart tissue or if there is a risk for a heart attack. An electrocardiogram, which shows the electrical activity of the heart, and an echocardiogram, which shows the heart in picture form produced by soundwaves, may be done. Some stress tests...
